I have been reading a lot of old leather guides from the 1980s and 1990s and so many queer men came into leather in their 40s or 50s -- some only even came out as gay at all at that age or later. One of the most prolific gay leather handbook writers was married to a woman until he was 45. There's a lot of (frankly pretty ageist) writing online these days about how it's "never too late" to be queer, or to transition -- and usually what people consider the precipice of too late is somewhere around 30. In these old leather books I don't see any hemming and hawing about any age being "too late" or the past having been wasted. I see a bunch of guys who are just absolutely enthused to ever get to live out some of their fantasies, and a real, hungry joy that motivates them to keep on doing it and writing about it, simply for the sake of loving their life. They acknowledge aging and planning for the termination of 24/7 relationships should somebody die; they're clear-headed and rational for the most part about how the body can be injured or certain abilities can break down with age. That's just part of being a responsible leather practitioner at any age. It's never a suggestion that anyone participating is "too old." For many of these men joining the community was a second lease on life. And that's how I feel about both transition and kink things -- and furry things for that matter. I was where I was. I am here now. And being here has made me feel so amped and alive. How could a person ever be "too old" to want to feel the joy of belonging and the growth of doing something new?

I am slowly losing my mind over the shift towards video as the default media format.
