I
HATE
those giant multifandom collections of x reader oneshots on ao3 that are tagged with every pairing inside and clog everything up 😭 I understand that you’re tagging everything but oh my god please just post as individual oneshots or at the very least post smaller and more specific collections, I am BEGGING
I am so sick of wading through these when I’m trying to just search for good fics

Goodreads has become nothing more than a fractured reflection of an industry that demands the blending of art and commerce, where actual communal relationships and authentic, good-faith reviews vanish
Let's Talk About Goodreads

Something about the whole "Eming is born of Hua Cheng's desire to live and Rouye is born of Xie Lian's desire to die," and then how Xie Lian wears funeral colours and Hua Cheng wears wedding colours. God oriented towards death and stillness and self-denial. Ghost oriented towards life and hope and happiness.

reasons criticizing fanfics publicly is lame
lets go over this again shall we?
it is not appropriate to give constructive criticism of fanfiction unless explicitly asked by the author. lots of authors are not interested in improving their writing, they are doing this for the goofs. the laughs. the giggling-good-times. giving people constructive criticism on fanfiction is a bit like if someone gave you a home made birthday card and in front of a room full of people you began to critique it. that social awkwardness? that is what you should feel when you start criticizing fanfiction
"I don't like" is not constructive criticism. it is not critical thinking. if you use the sentence "i don't like" in an academic paper you will fail. what you like is not an objective fact. it is a feeling. which you are allowed to have but which means nothing about the object of your dislike. now, to refer to point one, even if criticism IS constructive, still not appropriate here, but the amount of people who are confusing not liking something with being critical is truly baffling.
i have said this before and i will say it again. just because you have the opportunity to do something, does not mean you are right for doing it. for example, people love to say that if you post things online then you are giving people the right to criticize it. to which i say: no. i am giving you the opportunity. the same way that when i walk out my door i give people on the street the opportunity to shout terrible things at me. that doesn't mean you aren't still an asshole for taking that opportunity. just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do something.
assuming that fanfics should be open to criticism is treating them like published works and is treating fandom like a goods and services economy. we are not consumers consuming products, we are meant to be a community of people with similar interests sharing things. a timeless, but always relevant, metaphor for this, is that fandom is a potluck not a restaurant. you wouldn't go to a potluck and start talking about the food the way you might at a restaurant.
not 2 sound horribly naive or whatever, but maybe just be kind? like, it's not very hard. maybe just don't get on the internet and be an entitled superior asshat. idk man.

watched the ballad of songbirds and snakes today with two of my friends and their reactions to the ending made me realise just how genius the entire concept is. here you have the main antagonist of one of the most popular franchises of all time - the audience knows he’s a villain, and does despicable things - yet you’re seeing him young and, initially, with the same framing as katniss had in thg. and it just reinforces everything about the original trilogy in the most heart wrenching way possible.
one of my friends said she felt ‘manipulated’ by the movie because of its ending, and honestly, I felt the same way while both reading the book and watching the film. but it’s an intentional manipulation, and it’s very similar structurally and thematically to a greek tragedy - the protagonist, full of potential, makes a series of choices that ultimately lead to his moral downfall. my friends kept saying ‘if he’d just—!’ if he’d just stayed with lucy gray. if he’d just been content with the love he had. if he’d just not let his ambition rule him. but we all knew how it would end, and we watched it anyway.
collins is weaponising the reach that her previous novels (and their adaptations) had to make a point about human nature and our tendency to hope for good even when the odds are completely stacked against us. when lucy gray says, ‘i think there’s a natural goodness built into human beings’, she’s putting into words what we as the audience are hoping for the entire way through.
and that’s what makes it so powerful. you know how it ends, but for a time, you believe in snow’s potential to be a good person. hope is the only thing stronger than fear. thematically, it’s full circle. you’ve been played by collins, and by your own expectations for a happy ending. it’s orpheus and eurydice. it’s a tragedy, with a fatal flaw. you’re a spectator of a pair of star-crossed lovers in the brutal arena of a dystopian world, where the rich get richer and the poor stay poor. everything about it is doomed from the start, but it’s human to hope, so there’s hope anyway. what the fuck.

so i love the book Little women but i absolutely hate people (especially fans of the 2019 film) who think Jo and Laurie shoule have ended up together
even if you dont see jo as ace/ a lesbian
imagine it from her perspective
she's spent her whole life knowing that she is treated as a second class citizen for being a woman, she knows society expects her to get married and any association she has with men will be viewed under that lens
but then she meets laurie, and he doesnt treat her any differently for being a woman, and a woman from a poor family. With laurie she is allowed the freedom from the typical expectations of men and women at the time and she doesnt have to think about how one day she'll have to 'grow up' and settle down and be someone's wife
and then Laurie tells he's in love with her
jo even says 'I'm sick of people thinking love is the only thing women are fit for'
she doesnt want to marry Laurie, she wants to go and become a writer and make a name for herself, instead of whoever shes married to
and she does that, she goes to New York, and publishes her stories, which she never would have done if she married Laurie
by the end of the book, her and laurie are both married happily to different people* and neither one of them harbours any resentment or ill feelings about it. They both understand that Laurie and Amy, and Jo and the professor, work much better than the two of them would.
* I do think that had the book been written in the 21st century, Jo would not have ended up with anyone, but for the 1800s the idea of marrying for love not money was still fairly progressive
