DenSu falling asleep together has deep dimensions to me because I see Mathias as often having sleep difficulties caused by stress. It's not that he's actively being threatened, but his past experiences gave him an irrational fear of the world. His instincts tell him that threats are everywhere and he must always be prepared to fight them, so he sleeps with a very disrupted pattern. He'll sleep and wake up in short intervals, such that he never goes into a deep sleep and he starts his mornings feeling exhausted.
But when Mathias is sleeping next to Björn, it suddenly feels like he has nothing to worry about. It doesn't matter that Björn sleeps like a rock and won't actually be able to wake up and defend them. His mind stops being paranoid about imaginary threats, and he only feels safety and relief when they're together.

Hey! I was just wondering if you had some male, danish name ideas? Not neccesarily for the hetalia denmark, but just for danish characters in general?
Just so everyone knows, I'm not Danish. I just like Denmark (both the character and the real country) a lot.
When searching for character names, you'll have to pay attention to the character's time period and social class. My characters are "average" people living in the modern day (even if they're immortal), so I get to simply look at the names of people in real life as reference. If there's a name I'm unfamiliar with, I use websites such as navnebetydning.dk (site in Danish) which records the meaning and historical use of the name in Denmark. That website normally also provides a graph of the name's popularity from 1900-2010, but their graph widget seems to be broken right now. There is always the Danish national statistics bureau's name search, which can check a name's popularity across the current population, but it doesn't show age groups or trends.
As a general rule of thumb for Danish names, Danes use Old Norse names a lot less than the other Scandinavian countries because of the influence from the European continent. Denmark was declared Christian in 960 and Christianity became the dominant religion by the mid-1000s as well, so Denmark (character) would be very likely to have a Christian name in the 1000s and later. Biblical names have always remained popular after the Christianization of Denmark and are safe choices for Danish characters.

For outfit ideas, I think it would be fun to explore historical outfits!! For example, I think Fin would look very cute (and prob very uncomfortable) in the knightly order outfit of Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, an important (and very interesting!!) Finnish diplomat from the 18th century
This got lost in my drafts, sorry about that, anon!! This is a nice request, historical outfits are fun to draw! (I agree, this outfit must feel a bit uncomfortable)
Tumblr media
And you're right; Armfelt was a fascinating character. I definitely recommend that people read more about him if Swedish/Finnish history interests you! But very simply put, he was a powerful official in Gustav III's court (and one of the king's rumored lovers) who was later declared a traitor in Sweden for treason. After the Swedish coup of 1809 and the deposition of the king, Armfelt moved to the newly seized Grand Duchy of Finland and continued his political career in the Russian Empire, helping to lift Finland's status and rights significantly.
But in general, the era of the Swedish kingdom's split into Sweden and Finland is so interesting - with many characters like Armfelt. In Sweden, the nobles and officials who stayed in Finland and pledged the oath of allegiance to the old enemy, Russia, were seen as traitors. Though not everyone swore the alliance, some individual soldiers and officials, still loyal to the crown, ended up fleeing and residing in Sweden.
But in parts of the high Finnish society, the dissatisfaction with the crown had existed for a while already (e.g., Anjala Conspiracy, Proclamation of Empress Elizabeth of 1742, Sprengtporten's constitution of 1786). Note that these attempts weren't motivated by nationalistic motifs but out of frustration with the domestic politics in the kingdom. The absolute monarchy was abolished in Sweden in 1719, basically due to the catastrophe that was the Great Northern War (especially in Finland). However, King Gustav III restored the old monarchy in a coup d'état of 1772 and launched more wars with Russia over the rule of the Baltic Sea. So it's probably no coincidence that the dissatisfaction grew especially in the eastern part of the kingdom throughout the 18th century. The final blow being the incompetence during the Finnish War of 1808.
And the position that Alexander I of Russia offered to "Finns" in 1809 was very favorable; by pledging loyalty in the Diet of Porvoo, the Grand Duchy got to keep its constitution, laws, language, religion, and even the taxes that it collected for itself. The first few decades of the Grand Duchy were critical in creating the path to independent Finland. And, of course, significant political changes happened in Sweden as well. Losing a third of the land area and a fourth of the population led to Sweden demanding their neighbor Norway as compensation in 1814

The New Year's Nordics comic that was just released claims that Danes have the tradition of throwing plates at people's doors on New Year's, but I cannot find any credible information about this tradition when I search for it in Danish. I asked several Danes about it and nobody recognized it either, although someone pointed out that this could have been done to make noise before the invention of fireworks. But it's safe to say that Danes do not do this in 2024.
Please don't believe everything you see in Hetalia.

Did someone say bunads? Bunads are so important and unique to Norway, I'd love to learn more about them. I hope to buy one for my 25th birthday too, but they're so expensive 😩 Some general bunad-related questions I'm curious about:
Besides 17. Mai, on what other occasions do Norwegians wear bunads? Your post about bunad suggestions for Sigurd said that you wore yours to Christmas. Which regions of Norway are more likely and less likely to wear bunads on other special occasions?
Are bunads that are historically authentic (those that never fell out of use or were reconstructed from detailed historical documents) seen as more valuable than "bunads" (festdrakter?) that are modern designs with a weak historical connection?
Men don't receive a bunad for their confirmation, so for the 20% of them who have one, when and how do they receive it?
And some questions that are related to Sigurd:
How does Sigurd choose which bunad to wear? Does he have a hometown and he always wears its bunad? If he doesn't, what does he think about the people who get upset at those who wear a bunad they have no connection to?
Is Sigurd opinionated about bunads? Is he a "bunad police" who thinks that a bunad must be made in Norway with traditional Norwegian materials and traditional sewing techniques, otherwise it's a knockoff?
I’m literally shaking with exciment right now, Thank you so much for all these questions😭😭 (doodle under all of this):
Yes! Bunads can be worn for many other occasions! Confirmations, baptisms, christmas, wedding, the gala, (funerals), and highly formal occasions✨ and yes, it kind of depends on the area. Some areas in Norway have a much strong connection to their folkclothing in comparison to other areas. Hardanger, Telemark, Setesdal are examples on areas that are quite connected to their folkclothing (heavy on Setesdal). So it’s more likely people from those places chose to wear their bunads more often instead of thise who are not from those areas. Also depends on personal preference.
Yes and no? It actually depends on who you ask. The average Norwegian would probably say no or don’t care, but if you ask a bunad expert/historian/maker they could give a different answer. I do kind of see bunads in cat. 1 and 2 more "important" than those in cat. 4 and 5. not because I don’t like them (god forbid, those bunads are very beautiful too), but simply because I’m more fond of older traditions and very "authentic" Norwegian culture (says I, who has a bunad from cat. 5 that I love so god damn much).
Actually, men do recive bunads for their confirmation😅 it’s just that most boys choose to ask for money instead. Parents usually ask their kids if they want a bunad as a gift, it’s just that’s it’s common for boys say no. I know 3 boys who wished for bunads for their confirmations. But yeah, it’s more common that men recive bunads later in life. It’s usually after their young adult years. It’s not that they really regret not getting a bunad, it’s more like "owning a bunad could be quite neat, actually" And they do like everyone else does; pay a shit ton of money and get it professionally made by bunad makers. Or some buy second hand or maybe they have someone in the family who already sew bunads. (I’m making a bunad for my brother when I become a bunad maker actually).
And for the Sigurd part:
Technically, Sigurd can wear any bunad he wants, after all, he does represent all of Norway. And I could leave it at that; Sigurd chooses a random bunad he just feels to wear that moment, but I think that’s boring. Sigurd wear bunads from the places he feels most at home, so yes, he does wear the bunad from the its area. I actually think he would feel awkward or think it’s wrong that he wears a bunad from an area he doesn’t view as home. Even if people would want him to wear their area’s bunad, he’d never really do that - for him it feels wrong. But on the other hand, I don’t think people in general would throw a fit about him wearing a bunad from a place he necessary don’t live in, I think they would be hounored that Norway himself wants to wear something that represent their area. Sigurd has multiple homes, those being: Telemark, Setesdal, and somewhere in western-Norway and in rural Trøndelag. He has three bunads who he usually switches between; East-Telemark Redshirtbunad (Øst-Telemark Raudtrøye bunad), the Setesdalsbunad and a modern East-Telemark bunad (Gråtrøye bunad). Another one he doesn’t mind wearing is Kvittrøyebunad from Hallingal. Norway has some sort of physical and emotional ties to these bunads and places (won’t go into detail rn).
Unpopular opinion, I do think Sigurd would be a bit like the "bunadpolice". He’s an old soul and he has been around and followed the bunads timeline, and he still does. He is not as strict as most bunadpolice people are. "You can’t wear that silver to that bunad!!! Damn you!!" He’s not that picky. But when it comes to certain things like how it’s made and how it’s worn, he doesn’t hesitate. He doesn’t like it when people choose the bunad they feel like, he wants them to choose the bunad from the place they grew up/born/their family’s area, etc. He truly belives that a bunad should represent you and/or your family, not something you have no connection too. Same goes for how a bunad is made. In his eyes, it has to be made with Norwegian values. Materials, knowledge, etc. he doesn’t care who makes ‘em, could be literally anyone, as long as it is made in Norway with Norwegian materials and skilled hands that have been taught by the real bunad makers. That’s what he views as a bunad. These views have been challenged before obviously. ‘Cause what if people with Norwegian heritage can’t go to Norway and simply learn how to make a bunad there? What if they want to reconnect by using the materials they have avilble? Will that be a knockoff, or can that be somewhat a bunad? Sigurd is still trying to figure out those means.

If you're requesting things for Sweden, I'd love to see him in historical clothes! Either has a Carolean or in the outfit he wore to Gustav Vasa's coronation! I love your art and your posts always make my day. 💛
Thank you anon, your support makes my day <3 I went with something more reminiscent of the Vasa era! Yellow is a tricky color to pull off, but I wanted to try it out. He's so baby-faced..

Drafted this post to reply to @ingasolja headcanons for the Nordics' weaknesses to suggest a weakness for Timo (Finland) who didn't get one and Mathias (Denmark) because I don't think he would be mentally stuck in the Kalmar Union period forever. But since it's so long and already a post, why not make it a post. (I use human names so it's clear that I'm talking about the characters, not their countries.)
On the surface, Timo is a lot like Björn (Sweden) as he's extremely stubborn and refuses to ever admit that he's wrong. However, while Björn's stubbornness is caused by his Unwarranted Swedish Self-Importance that makes him think he is the most brilliant mind to walk the earth, Timo's is caused by his massive victim complex that he built as a psychological defense during the time when his country was ruled by others and had to fight hard for its independence. Timo thinks that the world is full of those who are ready to prey on him at any moment, so he treats every negative interaction as an attack against him. Even with a minor disagreement in opinions, he becomes very defensive and turns to his favorite ad hominem: that the person he's arguing with hasn't suffered as much as him and doesn't know what the world is really like. Timo's defensive attitude also makes him extremely competitive, especially against Björn. He's a sore loser and can stay upset for a very long time after losing a competition, while he becomes very smug after winning, which makes the other Nordics reluctant to play against him. Because a big part of Timo's worldview comes from how he sees himself as someone whose life was harder than everyone else's, he can be insensitive towards and downplay the struggles of others to place the spotlight on his own.
As for Mathias, when I studied the events of the Kalmar Union and later, I don't get the impression of someone who blindly thinks of himself as a leader - rather, I see someone who is paranoid about becoming powerless. The Kalmar Union has not existed for 500 years and Denmark's "leadership" over the Nordic countries is a long-lost memory. Leadership to Mathias is a means to an end to hold on to power. Mathias sees the world in a ruthless and cold way, where he is either someone who uses others, or he's the one getting used. In the past, he used to be too confident, which led to others learning about his weaknesses and giving him a crushing defeat that, to this day, he hasn't completely recovered from. He retreated into his shell after that, and developed a carefully crafted, friendly and humble persona that would not reveal his weaknesses. Mathias is very calculative in his social interactions, the way he presents himself and predicts the intentions of others. This makes him assume the worst of others and unintentionally hurt them when he is skeptical of someone who genuinely wants to be kind. He also became inauthentic and disconnected from his true identity when it's buried under layers of self-defense. Those who are aware of this don't want to get close to Mathias because they're afraid they will be manipulated and lied to by him, so he finds it difficult to form deep relationships with others.
