Morgan just wants to matter.

That’s her whole deal. There’s a reason she’s so competitive and determined to succeed at all costs.

She may come from a privileged background in terms of race and socioeconomic status, but she’s always had to fight an uphill battle for recognition. She was the black sheep. Her talents and interests did not line up with the rest of her family’s, which led to a lack of support and enthusiasm for her projects and achievements. Signs point to her being a youngest child as well, which certainly doesn’t help in that department.

Morgan’s never the favorite.

So yeah, of course it bothers her when she sees Melendez paying extra attention to Claire. She knows Claire’s going through a hard time, she knows better than anyone and was there to support her through it in her own particular way, but it has to hurt seeing them hang out off the clock and realizing that once again she is the person that no one is investing any extra effort in, the person who has nobody who cares if she succeeds.

Andrews was right when he said Morgan did that operation because she wanted to be a hero, but that’s not entirely a bad thing, as he alluded to later when he said it also showed that saving lives is her first priority. Morgan wants to be somebody’s hero, to feel like she’s actually made a difference and her contributions matter.

Morgan is obsessed with success, that’s true. What people don’t understand is why, and what success even means to her. She chases accolades because she’s been starved for praise her whole life. She steps on people’s toes because that’s the only way she knows how to get ahead. And look, she works hard. She works really, really hard because she wants that form of success that has always eluded her, and she wants to prove she’s capable. And tbh, she wants to prove her family wrong for underestimating her and thinking her achievements are meaningless. That parental approval has always been out of reach no matter how much she struggles and strives.

She is someone who seems to have every advantage, so it’s easy for their superiors to think she needs no support. And maybe she doesn’t strictly need it - she’s gotten this far with determination and hard work - but she’s dying inside for a little external validation and acknowledgement, some kind of investment in her talents and passions. I know she’s not doing herself any favors with her very visible but fragile ego and her dog-eat-dog attitude, but it’s still painful to watch.

The first time Morgan finally gets some heartfelt praise from an authority figure she’s striving to please is when she’s also told her career might be over. And that’s just tragic.

Hot take but I think Morgan got the best season arc, we were all just too busy concentrating on all the disastrous love stories to notice. She’s the only one who got sufficient development/screentime, AND a respectful storyline for her character.
