"So the shark bait lives after all," Kathryn murmured.  The Everfair was drawing closer to the drifter by the second.  "I suppose there's no getting out of this now."
"Just look at this as another opportunity for adventure," Isaac offered.
The woman nonchalantly waved him off as she fixed her eyes on one of the deckhands.  "Leith, toss the soggy fellow a rope," she commanded.  "And get it to him in one try.  I don't want to be here all day."
"Yes, ma'am."

A person. That was not the answer Kathryn had wanted to hear.  She nearly lost her balance as her ship sharply veered in the drifter's direction.
"What are you doing?!" she snapped at Isaac.
"Isn't it obvious?" he replied with blank stare.
Kathryn cursed under her breath before angrily spitting, "At least warn us first!"  Isaac gave the ship's benefactor a nonchalant shrug before returning his attention to the wheel.  The lone woman couldn't help but let out a low growl.  He only got away with his attitude because they had known each other since childhood.
"I hear that we are to have an unexpected guest?"  Samuel's voice broke through Kathryn's thoughts, and she gave the older man a sideways glance.
"Unfortunately," she sighed.  "Although I'm sure you're thrilled."
"Of course!"  He gave her a bright smile.  "Any opportunity to practice my medicinal craft is most welcome!"
"Hmph."  Kathryn returned to her perch on the rail.  Samuel was nice enough, but his cheery poeticness occasionally got on her nerves.
The crew talked amongst themselves, but Kathryn stayed silent as the distance between the ship and the stranded soul closed.  Until...  We should be close enough.
"HEY!" she suddenly yelled, cupping her hands around her mouth.  "ARE YOU STILL BREATHING, OR CAN WE LEAVE YOU FOR THE SHARKS?"

Reluctant Rescue [Kathryn & Eugene] {icouldgetusedtoabloglikethis}
The brunette young woman sat on the rail of the quarter deck, absentmindedly staring at the ocean.  It was a brilliant blue today, with the sun sparkling off of the gentle waves.  Her mind wandered aimlessly, when a random musing suddenly wriggled its way to the forefront.  How long has it been since I left home?  She shook her head to clear her mind of the unwelcome question, but it refused to disappear.  Four years?  Five?  She rubbed her temple and scoffed.
"Kathryn, if you're not feeling well, you shouldn't be sitting on the railing.  You might fall overboard."
Kathryn shot her ship's captain an annoyed glare.  "I feel fine.  And I haven't fallen yet, have I?"
He chuckled and rapped his knuckles on his wheel.  "Knock on wood."
Kathryn rolled her eyes and returned her sight to the water.  She let her gaze meander across the smooth horizon... until it suddenly halted upon an unexpected obstacle.
"DEDERICK!" she barked.  Why does Isaac assign him to the crow's nest if he doesn't even keep watch?
"Yes ma'am?!" came the quick and fearful reply.
"Starboard side, near the horizon.  What is that?"  She watched the young man peer through his telescope in the indicated direction.
"Uh, well... I think... It may possibly be... a person."

((Below is the quite un-spectacular sort-of-fanfic plot I wrote for Kathryn back in 2011 when I created her.  Read at your own risk.))
Eugene and Rapunzel are married 3-4 years after the movie, and are on a royal ship, the Suncrest, sailing to a honeymoon getaway. They have been sailing for 4 days when a storm hits and Eugene is thrown overboard with some cargo. He stays afloat on a piece of broken wood, and Kathryn's crew rescues him two days later. After a day or two, Eugene recovers enough to speak, and tells the ship's doctor, Samuel, what happened (leaving out the fact that he is a prince). Samuel tells Kathryn and the ship's captain, Isaac, Eugene's story and that he's from Corona. Kathryn talks to Eugene in the sick bay. He wants them to sail to his original destination, but Kathryn tells him her ship is headed for Corona to get some supplies. Since he's from there, she says he should be able to find another ship to take him to where he was originally headed. Eugene has no choice but to agree to this. It'll take two days to get there, and then they'll part ways.
While on the ship, Eugene talks to the crew, mostly Isaac and Samuel. He learns about the purpose of the Everfair and a bit about each crew member. Isaac, the captain, trains falcons and hawks and has a pet one that's always perched on his shoulder. Samuel, the doctor, had his own practice but decided he liked working on ships better because he got to travel to various places and learn more medical techniques. The crew consists of Christopher, the first mate, Jake, the cook, José, the navigator, Dederick, Leith, Antonio, Vincent, and Gilbert, the deckhands. Samuel and Isaac are the only ones besides Kathryn who are from Corona, the rest are from other parts of the world they've visited, near and far.
Once at Corona, Eugene heads for the palace and talks with the King and Queen. They tell him Rapunzel hasn't returned nor have they received any news since the Suncrest's departure, so they order a ship to be prepared to search for the Suncrest. Isaac had followed Eugene up to the palace and after watching him enter the gates, goes out and talks to the townspeople while gathering supplies. He knows the story of the kingdom's long-lost princess, having grown up in the city. However, he learns that while the crew had been gone for several years, the lost princess, Rapunzel, had been found a few years ago and that she had just married the reformed thief, Eugene Fitzherbert, formerly known as Flynn Rider. The two were (supposed to be) on their honeymoon for three weeks.
Isaac returns to the Everfair at dusk to see Kathryn sitting on the dock, writing in a book. She tells him that they're staying another day, leaving in the morning two days from now, to give the crew time to rest and gather a few more supplies. Isaac tells her what he learned about Eugene. Kathryn seems disinterested, and Isaac suggests that they help Eugene try to find his ship in order to rescue the princess and perhaps gain some monetary reward that would benefit their travels. Kathryn points out that the princess might be perfectly fine and doesn't need rescuing, or the ship may have been sunk in the storm that threw Eugene overboard and they'd just be chasing ghosts. After she says that, she notices Isaac staring behind her and turns around to see Eugene, who clearly heard at least the last part of her statement. She freezes, not sure what to do, but Eugene speaks, not looking at her. "I'm leaving with a ship tomorrow morning to go look for the Suncrest." "I hope you didn't come here to invite us along," Kathryn says with a sarcastic chuckle, although Isaac can tell she is trying to cover up her discomfort. Eugene gives a small smile. "Heh. No, you made your position pretty clear that we'd part ways once we reached Corona." "Right," Kathryn mutters. "Well, good luck to you then," she says as she turns to leave. "Uh, wait, wait," Eugene says quickly. Kathryn turns to face him as he unties something from the back of his belt. He hands her a heavy bag that she can barely hold in one hand, clearly filled with money. "Thank you for saving me." Kathryn looks at the bag, then looks up at him. "Eugene--" He looks up at her. "... I hope you find your wife." He smiles sadly. "Thank you." Kathryn watches Eugene disappear into the darkness, then turns around and stalks up the gangplank, shoving the bag of money into Isaac's chest as she passes him. "Here." "What am I supposed to do with this?" he asks as she walks away. "I don't care, go get drunk or something," she snaps. "I'm going to bed." She slams the door to her cabin. Isaac looks at the bag and chuckles. "That's a great idea. If only I drank."
The next morning Eugene leaves on one of the royal naval ships. Kathryn is around the docks when an older man suddenly runs up to her and bear hugs her. "Kathryn!" She recognizes him immediately but doesn't believe what's happening. "Dad?!" "Kathryn, we have so much to talk about," he says as he starts pulling her along. She yanks her hand out of his grasp. "What do you think you're doing?" He looks at her sadly. "Please come home, Kathryn. Your mother will be overjoyed to see you." "No!" Kathryn exclaims. "I'm not going home. There's a reason I left, you know." "Yes, we do," her father says. Kathryn looks surprised. "Please, just visit for the day. We won't force you to stay," he pleads. Kathryn opens her mouth to say no but Samuel appears out of nowhere beside her. "Of course she'll visit for the day!" he interrupts. "I'm sure she won't mind it as much if you let me tag along, though." "Of course, of course!" Mr. Peterson says, clearly happy. The trio walks through the city to the Peterson home, Kathryn growling under her breath at Samuel for interfering and Samuel pointing out that she hasn't been home for six years, she should at least talk to her parents. Once home, Kathryn is greeted with hugs and kisses from her mother. Kathryn wriggles away and coldly states that she'll stay for an hour maximum. The four sit down to talk. The Petersons ask questions about what Kathryn's been doing. She doesn't really answer, giving only short, general responses, but then Samuel pipes up with stories of adventures they'd had. Kathryn occasionally jumps in to correct him but otherwise she lets him do most of the talking for a few hours. Her parents then apologize, much to Kathryn's surprise, for forcing her to pursue a "lady-like" life, including a planned arranged marriage which was the last straw that caused her to run away. "When you disappeared we realized that we were wrong to push you and confine you like we did," her father says. Kathryn doesn't look at them. "I can't say that you shouldn't think that..." she says a bit sharply, then her tone and expression softens, "but I am sorry that I caused you heartache. You clearly worried about me every day I've been gone." She looks at them a bit embarrassed, and then as if trying to lighten the mood, "I mean, Dad has 30 times more wrinkles than he did when I left." David chuckles, but Mary Anne says, "Well I'd attribute most of those to hard work!" Kathryn looks confused. "Huh? Since when was sitting on the King's Court hard work?" David tries to hush his wife, but she carries on. "Right after you ran away your father got a job down at the docks. He learned everything and worked there every day he could so that if you came back he would either be there or hear about it from his friends right away." Kathryn looks shocked. "Hush, Mary Anne," David says. "There's no need to act like it's anything special." Kathryn stands up. "I need to use the powder room. Excuse me," she says, and walks out of the room. As soon as she enters the powder room, tears start streaming down her cheeks.
The family and Samuel eat. They are just finishing when there's a knock on the door. It's a royal messenger, telling Mr. Peterson there's been an emergency meeting called of the King's Court. David hurriedly gets ready to leave, and Samuel and Kathryn go outside, intending to leave. Isaac comes up to them. Kathryn asks how he knew where they were, and he say he saw the two of them leave with an older man and asking around the docks told him who the man was and where he lived. Isaac says there's a rumor flying around that something's wrong because the royal guards in the city have been uptight for the past hour and all of the members of the Royal Court are being called in. Kathryn says a messenger had just left after telling her father there was an emergency meeting. Samuel suggests it has something to do with the missing princess just as David exits the house. The trio walks with him to the palace, asking him if he knows anything. He says he wasn't given any information other than to report immediately. He tells the guards at the gates to let the trio accompany him to the doors of the palace, and they comply. The trio can't go inside, however. Daniel kisses Kathryn on the forehead and hugs her, telling her that he loves her and it's okay if she needs to leave, then enters. The trio move off into a garden area, and Samuel says he's been inside the castle before and if he recalls correctly, the wall they're near is the courtyard boundary and you can access the courtroom windows from there. The two men hoist Kathryn up, having to throw her to reach the top of the wall. She grabs it and climbs over, landing safely on the other side. From there she climbs a tree and jumps to a second-story ledge. The windows are cracked open due to the summer heat. She sits in the shadows and listens. The meeting just starts as she gets up there, and the King and Queen and their councils are present. The King says that a little over an hour ago they received a letter demanding a ransom for the safe return of their daughter. He explains how Prince Eugene had returned after being thrown overboard in a storm and had set sail this morning to try and find the Suncrest, so he says that the storm must have lead to Rapunzel getting captured by these extortionists. The amount they have demanded is almost all of what they have stored in the kingdom's treasury, so paying the ransom will bankrupt the kingdom. The Queen says that they're not asking for the council's approval to do this to save their daughter, as they cannot justify harming all their citizens for their princess, but they needed to inform the council of what was happening. One of the members asks if there's any more details in the ransom note. The King says it gives them a week to be at the shores of Belal, a small seaport, with the ransom. The Queen says that they and their military men don't know the area that well so they best they can do is send a ship and hope the navy can reach Belal in time and recover the princess.
"I have a better idea," Kathryn says loudly, having pushed open the window. The council members gasp as she leaps down and lands neatly on the floor. "Your Majesties," she says as she approaches the King and Queen. The guards rush from the corners of the room, but David yells out, "Wait! That's my daughter!" and leaves his seat. The King motions to the guards to stop. David stands next to Kathryn as they stand before the royals. "What is your name?" the Queen asks. "My name is Kathryn Peterson," she says, looking confidently at them. "My parents are David and Mary Anne Peterson, my father standing beside me as a member of your Royal Court." David nods. "What is this idea of yours?" the King asks. "For the past six years I've owned and sailed on my ship, the Everfair," Kathryn explains. "My captain and my ship's doctor are outside the court if you wish to speak with them." The King nods towards two guards who exit the room. "My ship is much smaller and faster than one of your military ships, and one of my crew members is from the area around Belal and is therefore very familiar with it. My crew as a whole has visited that port several times in our journeys." The guards enter with Isaac and Samuel, who stand next to Kathryn and her father. "My captain, Isaac, and our doctor, Samuel," she introduces them. "I propose that my ship set sail immediately and catch up with the Sunburst. It should take us less than a day if we sail strong through the night." The Queen looks at Isaac and Isaac nods. "Since the Everfair is faster than the Sunburst, we'll take who we can with us to Belal. We should reach there on the fifth day. That gives us two days before the deadline to scout the area. My crew member who is from there should easily be able to pick up a lead. We can get Princess Rapunzel back unharmed." "And if you fail?" the King asks. "Then we did no better than you would have," Kathryn answers, unwavering. The council buzzes and the King and Queen look at each other. "Your Majesty," David says, "As you said, we can't bankrupt the kingdom for one person, but of course we all want our princess returned unharmed. This is our best option."
The trio and David race out of the courtroom, having been given a royal blessing. "I'll send Juniper," Isaac says, lifting his arm and sending the hawk flying into the air. "They should be just about ready to set sail by the time we get there." "Do you have a moment to stop at our house?" David asks, huffing more than the rest of them. "I'll go," Samuel says as Kathryn and Isaac exchange glances. "That way you two can help with the final preparations and I'll just hop on board." "Okay," Kathryn says. "But hurry, we won't leave without you." Samuel salutes, and he and David break off toward the Peterson residence. Reaching the ship, Kathryn and Isaac hurry aboard, both helping the crew prepare and Isaac barking orders as they do. They are just finishing as Samuel runs up the gangplank, pulling it on the ship after him. Just as they shove off, a white horse tears down the dock and leaps onto the ship. "What the hell?!" Kathryn exclaims. "Oh, that's Maximus," Samuel says. "He's the city's best guard." Kathryn gives Samuel an "Are you crazy?" look. Samuel shrugs. "He really wants to help save Rapunzel." Maximus nods and Kathryn puts her hand to her forehead. "Oh boy." The Everfair sets sail.
They spot the Sunburst toward sunset the next day, and Isaac sends Juniper ahead with a message. Eugene sees Juniper and recognizes the hawk, letting it land on his shoulder and taking the message from its beak. The message says not to slow down the ship, but that the Everfair is going to catch up and pull alongside. When it does, Kathryn and Isaac take running jumps and leap between the ships. They explain to Eugene what's happened and what their plan is. Eugene and a few officers return to the Everfair with Kathryn and Isaac, and the Everfair pulls ahead. The Sunburst will still head to Belal, arriving just in time to meet up with the Everfair and for them to plot their move before the deadline.
Once in Belal, Leith meets up with some old friends of his and through their talk gets some info. A gang of pirates had come across the damaged Suncrest and kidnapped a princess. They sent the Suncrest back to Corona with a ransom note, hoping to get some good money. Leith relays this info to the others. They scout the island but are unable to find the pirates. The Everfair sails back out and meets with the Sunburst. The plan is to have the Sunburst dock in Belal and Eugene to go into the town. They expect that the exchange won't take place in such a public area and that he will be given further instructions. This is what happens, and Eugene receives a note that says to be at a beach a short sail down the shoreline. Kathryn had given Eugene the chest of loot that they carry on the Everfair, including the money he had given her dumped into it. Eugene communicates the instructions to the others by Juniper. Isaac and Samuel stay on the Everfair and follow the Sunburst at a distance while Leith leads Kathryn and the rest of the crew over land to the beach, all of them riding on horses that Leith was able to borrow with Kathryn riding on Max. They approach quietly, and surround the beach. They see a group of pirates standing in front of the treeline. The Sunburst anchors offshore, and Eugene takes a scouting boat to shore with the chest. He walks halfway up the beach, as do the pirates, meeting in the middle. He sets the chest down. "That chest doesn't look big enough to carry all of our payment," one of the pirates says. "This is just a sample," Eugene says, staring at them. "First you show me that Princess Rapunzel is alive and unharmed, then you get the rest." "Sonny, you're in no position to be giving orders," another pirate says. "Yeah, if you don't pay up, your princess is dead!" another chimes in. "And if you kill her right now just because I want to make sure this is an even trade, you won't get any money," Eugene says in a steady, low voice. "You got guts, boy," the pirate in the front center says with a chuckle. "Open the chest first." Eugene does so. The pirate, clearly the leader, grins. "Okay boys, show the man his merchandise." The group parts as one of the pirates shoves a dirty, bound-and-gagged Rapunzel into view. She yells at Eugene but it's incomprehensible through the gag. Eugene smiles at her. "It's okay, everything's going to be alright now." "Yeah, once you go back to the ship and get us the rest of our--" The pirate stops short as the three men around Rapunzel drop to the ground, arrows in their backs. Kathryn's crew (plus the officers) ambush the pirates. It's an all-out fight. Some of the pirates are killed or knocked out. One of the guards is killed, Eugene and one of the Everfair's crew is knocked out. Kathryn clashes blades with the leader as he goes for Rapunzel. Knocking him away and to the ground, she quickly cuts the ropes around Rapunzel's hands and feet, saying "Hello Princess, Kathryn Peterson at your service." Kathryn then whips back around as the leader charges at her, fighting some more. He rams his blade through Kathryn's left shoulder. She shrieks and falls to one knee as he withdraws the blade, turning to see Rapunzel running away. Kathryn sees him look at her and jumps up, slicing his arm so he drops his sword. He grunts in pain but runs after Rapunzel, throwing her over his massive shoulder and running toward the woods. "Don't let him escape!" Kathryn orders, yelling at her crew. They chase the pirate into the woods. Kathryn collapses on beach.
Eugene wakes up to see the last couple crew members disappearing into the woods. He looks around, and notices Kathryn crumpled in a heap, her wound bleeding profusely. He rushes to her side and rips the arm of her shirt off, using it to tie up the wound. She looks at hazily at him. "Why aren't you going after your wife?" she groans. "Because I'm making sure you don't die!" Eugene says, tearing off her other sleeve. "Besides, I saw your crew running into the woods. They can handle it, can't they?!" "Of course, idiot," Kathryn says with a cough. Eugene smiles as he ties the other sleeve around the wound. Kathryn passes out as he picks her up and carries her to the boat.
The Everfair has pulled alongside the Sunburst, and Eugene has brought Kathryn to the Everfair's sick bay. He and Isaac are outside the door while Samuel is inside treating Kathryn. Isaac is leaning against the wall and Eugene is pacing back and forth. Juniper returns to Isaac, who had sent the hawk after his comrades, carrying a note in his beak. Eugene watches Isaac as he opens it. "It's from Christopher," Isaac says. "They've got the princess back unharmed." Eugene breathes a sigh of relief. "It'll take them about an hour to get back to Belal. I'll tell the Sunburst's captain and we'll both set sail for there." Isaac leaves. The ships have started moving toward the port when Samuel finally emerges from the sick bay. "Well?!" Eugene demands. Samuel looks at him and Eugene immediately knows it's not good. "She's lost too much blood so she's slipped into a coma." Eugene breathes sharply. "I doubt she'll last another couple hours." "No..." Eugene whispers. Samuel sighs. "I've got to go tell Isaac. You can go sit with her, in the meantime." Samuel walks past Eugene, who slowly walks to the door and enters. The room is not particularly big, but it is spacious for a ship and the bunks on the wall are divided from the rest of the room by a curtain that gives a few feet from the furniture on either side. Eugene parts the curtain as he ducks inside, the candlelight from the other side seeping through the cloth and the slight opening in the curtain. "Kathryn..." he whispers as he sees her. He looks around but the chair is on the other side of the curtain, so he goes back to grab it. As he does, Samuel walks in. "Ah, wait," he says as Eugene picks up the chair. "What is it?" Eugene asks, setting the chair back down. Samuel takes a leather pocket from under his arm. "Kathryn's parents wanted me to show this to you after we'd rescued the princess... Originally I was going to wait until we were on our way back to Corona, but considering Kathryn's current condition..." He trails off. Eugene looks confused. Samuel hands him the envelope. Eugene opens it and takes out some papers. They are official documents from the orphanage where he grew up. He reads them, and his eyes grow wide. "This... this can't be..." "It's true," Samuel says. "Kathryn's parents told me themselves, just before I had to head back to the Everfair so we could set sail and catch up with the Sunburst." "Does... does Kathryn...?" Eugene smatters. "No," Samuel answers, knowing what he was trying to ask. "They never told her." Eugene stares for another few seconds, then smacks the papers and envelope down on top of the table and picks up the chair, walking briskly through the curtain. The chair is heard plunking down on the floor and him sitting down in it.
Both ships have docked in Belal and the crew boards the Everfair. Isaac greets them at the top of the gangplank. "Good job, boys," he says gruffly. The crew can tell something is wrong, but Isaac says, "Welcome aboard, Princess," to Rapunzel. "Thank you!" she says. "Is my husband Eugene here?" Isaac nods toward the sick bay, where Samuel is standing outside the door. "Thank you!" Rapunzel says again as she runs over there. The crew gathers around Isaac. Rapunzel stops in front of Samuel, who's leaning against the door. "Excuse me," she says. Samuel looks at her. "You must be Princess Rapunzel." "Yes," she says with a smile. "Is Eugene in there?" "He is," Samuel says, but doesn't move. Rapunzel looks a little confused. "Uh, could I see him?" Samuel sighs. "He's not hurt, is he?" Rapunzel asks, suddenly worried. "No," Samuel says, still not moving. "Then what are you-?" "I'll let you in," Samuel says sternly, "but please be as quiet as possible." "O-okay," Rapunzel agrees. Samuel steps aside, opening the door for her and shutting it behind her. She steps quietly toward the curtain, then realizes there is muffled crying coming from behind the slightly-open cloth. "I'm sorry," she hears Eugene say, his voice cracking with quiet sobs. Rapunzel stops. "This is all my fault. I shouldn't have made you feel guilty about not helping me. I shouldn't have accepted your help. I shouldn't have been such a lousy fighter that I got knocked out on the beach." He sobs, and Rapunzel looks around, scared and unsure what to do. She sees the papers on the table and picks them up, reading them. They are orphanage records. Under the name of the orphanage and the date at the top of the paper, it says, "Drop-off: Eugene Fitzherbert, age 3 Elaine Fitzherbert, age 1 Mother previously deceased Father recently deceased No known relatives." The next page reads "Adoption: Elaine Fitzherbert, age 18 months By David and Mary Anne Peterson Renamed Kathryn Peterson." Rapunzel lets out a small gasp just as Eugene lets out a particularly loud sob. He then says, "A brother should protect his little sister." Rapunzel slips through the curtain. "Kathryn, I am so, so sorry." Eugene has his head next to Kathryn's, holding her head with his left hand and her right hand with his right hand. Tears form in Rapunzel's eyes and she begins to sing the incantation song. "Flower, gleam and glow," Eugene's head snaps up, "let your power shine," he turns and looks at Rapunzel, "make the clock reverse, bring back what once was mine," he takes her hand as she looks at him, still teary-eyed, "heal what has been hurt," Eugene begins to sing along with Rapunzel, "change the fates' design," she kneels down next to the bedside and takes Kathryn's hand, "save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine, what once was mine." A few tears roll down her cheeks and land on Kathryn's hand. Nothing seems to happen, and Eugene pulls Rapunzel close and buries his face in her hair. Suddenly the room lights up with a golden glow. Eugene looks up and they both watch as the golden flower appears in light over Kathryn's body, then fades away into it. Kathryn groans and stirs, Eugene and Rapunzel looking at her as she opens her eyes. "What...?" she mumbles groggily. "Kathryn!" Eugene shouts in joy and pulls her out of bed in a huge hug. Rapunzel squeals in delight and throws her arms around Eugene and Kathryn. Kathryn looks extremely confused. "O-kay, what did I miss?"
-----
Additional/Alternate plot ideas for the above story:
Rapunzel almost manages to escape from the pirates but is re-captured
Kathryn, Eugene, and Rapunzel are fleeing someone and cross a rope bridge. Eugene and Rapunzel are ahead of Kathryn and make it to the other side. Seeing their pursuers gaining on her, Kathryn slices the ropes so they'll break if more weight is put on the bridge. She's almost at the other side when the ropes snap. Eugene lunges for her but she's just out of reach. Suddenly a whip wraps around her wrist and she grabs ahold of it. Rapunzel is at the other end, sliding toward the cliff, but Eugene grabs the whip and together they pull Kathryn up.
Eugene finds out earlier in the plot that they are siblings but hasn't told Kathryn (either at her parents' request or he just hasn't been able too). The crew has been searching for where the pirates are camped, and Kathryn stumbles into a wrong but equally hostile camp. The pirates attack her, some attempt to rape her but only get as far as tearing her shirt. She fights back, killing at least one. Eugene and Max arrive and help her take down the rest. Eugene and Kathryn ride off on Max. Having gotten lost or planning to meet up with the rest of the crew in a day, they make camp. Kathryn hasn't said anything the whole time. Eugene asks her if she's alright, but she doesn't acknowledge him at all. He puts his hand on her shoulder to get her attention and she winces in pain and pulls away. Eugene looks worried. "Kathryn, we need to tend to your injuries--" "I'm fine," she snaps, turning away from him. "People who are 'fine' don't wince in pain when you lightly touch their shoulder," Eugene says with an edge of sarcasm. Kathryn doesn't reply. Eugene's face turns somber again. "There's a river nearby. Why don't you go take a bath?" Kathryn whips her head to look at him with eyes shooting daggers. Eugene holds up his hands. "Hey, if you're not going to let me treat your injuries, at least soak in the cool water for a bit so that you keep the swelling down." Kathryn squints an eye at him. "Max will stand guard for you. Right, Max?" Max whinnies and nods. Kathryn sighs and gets up, walking down toward the river. She spends about 15 minutes in the water, and returns to the bushes, drying off with a blanket they had with them in Max's saddlebag. She redresses, her shirt and vest going on last, and as she picks up the shirt she realizes that it's not hers. She quickly throws it on and runs back to the fire, vest in hand. Eugene is sitting by the fire with his vest on, but no shirt underneath it. Kathryn is angry at Eugene for switching her shirt for his.
