i think that quite possibly one of the best lines in dead poets society is after the walking exercise when keating's like "i see the look in your eyes like 'i would have walked differently'. then ask yourselves why you were clapping" GOD that line is so fucking good. he really killed the hubris about to jump out in every single teenage boy there

So I read the Dead Poets Society screenplay because yes, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I always like seeing scripts for movies, seeing what changed or was interpreted in different ways etc. And of course like with every movie there are deleted scenes and things so I wasn’t at all expecting it to be the same. But. I will say it was different in a few ways I wasn’t prepared for? To the point that I just feel the need to put this out there and ask if anyone knows if I’m. Like. Reading the right script? Because damn.
Most of the deviations weren’t unexpected until I reached the play. Mr. Perry shows up during it, as usual, but then he tries to drag Neil out while the performance is still going on? And when he refuses to leave? He hits him? On stage? In front of the whole audience?

Which was surprising just because it’s so different from the final product, but all the same I figured this is maybe just some earlier version of it. But then. We come to the deleted cave scene from that same night, when Keating joins the boys for a meeting in Neil’s honor after his dad takes him home. And I just. Just look at it okay.

PARDON ME BROTHER? TOES OF WHAT!?! WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL IS THIS??? IM TRAUMATIZED SOMEONE PLEASE JUST TELL ME THIS IS NOT A REAL SCRIPT.
Yeah. And I mean the rest of it proceeds with them having their meeting like in the deleted scene, and Todd reading his poem to them and all that but I was. SO caught off guard by this I don’t even know what to say.
On another note, the next difference I thought was interesting was having Neil’s suicide interspersed with what the other poets were doing at the same time, a recitation of a poem. I think the way they actually landed on handling this scene in the film is better, but you must admit “are you washed in the blood of the lamb” gives the scene… A chilling tone. That’s for sure.

and then there’s this:

This Keating being sick thing I’d heard of, but I thought it was just from an earlier version? Which again, makes me wonder what I’m reading here
another thing in the final scene: Nolan being Even More evil.

As with the first scene I mentioned, I guess Disney made them toss out the more obvious child abuse with the profanity and the overt sexual assault idk.
Overall this script (if this is in fact the script, I wouldn’t wonder at it if it weren’t for the… toes… genuinely what the hell was that) is somehow darker than the final product, which was interesting to me. Things like how much more openly angry and self destructive Neil was, how his father was also harsher (mom is nowhere to be seen or heard of in this btw), and how much more oppressive Welton felt. Evolving is of course just a function of filmmaking, a story changes at every step of the process, from writing to planning to shooting to editing, not to mention the worlds of life they breathed into this movie by it being so perfectly cast. Nonetheless it’s cool to see where it came from. (Really I just want someone to confer with me on that last cave scene, that was weird right? Have you seen this? Am I crazy? Send help?)
