Since Twitter isn't a good place to keep lengthy stuff, I am posting my small review here as well.
Finally completed Piofiore, so I can post my own short review. 🥰
Tumblr media
There aren't really any big spoilers but I tagged it as such, just to be safe.
Tumblr media
I'll start with Nicola because he was my first route. I actually enjoyed Nicolas route but his route almost ruined Roberto for me...His devotion toward Dante was quite endearing and I was happy he wasn't a f-boy as I initially thought, he was charming and a good start to Piofiore.
Tumblr media
Next up, Dante! He turned out to be my favorite, surprisingly, as I thought it'd be Gilbert. I really liked his caring, gentle behavior toward Liliana and his serious attitude. His CGs were so sweet and I enjoyed learning more about the key maiden.
Tumblr media
Orlok! I honestly don't know why they decided to make him a love interest, I didn't see the appeal and the whole religious stuff was getting on my nerves. His route was also quite depressing. He would have been a great side character though (kinda wished Leo and Orlok would have become friends, they would be a good match).
Tumblr media
I liked Yang a lot as a character, not as a LI though. His route was intriguing and I liked his a-hole attitude that secretly cared in a twisted way. I am also a sucker for smartasses so it was to be expected. The only route that truly felt like mafia as it was quite brutal and heartless at times.
Tumblr media
Gilbert, my sweet boi! I really liked him, def my 2nd fav from Piofiore, he is charming and treats Liliana well and values her opinion, I think this was the only route in which I more or less liked Lili. I wish we would have seen Gil w/o his eyepatch in sprites as well.
Tumblr media
Finale route (+Henri)! 3rd fav route, simply because I loved seeing the bosses and family members work together and have such cute interactions with Lili. Didn't care for Henri much, the whole Chloe thing was too much (not a fan of minor falls for an adult) but I did feel sorry him at the end (& for his backstory).
Tumblr media
Final verdict: I loved the side characters and some love interests were nice but the whole church stuff & angst was too much for my own taste. I loved the art & the side plot more than the main one, never truly got hooked but there were times I enjoyed the game. 5/10 for me - won't buy the sequel though.

Kinda regret having deleted my ff7 focused Twitter account ~2 years ago bc of some fight I had with someone. I really miss my FF moots and being able to talk about ff7 and interact with other fans... but idk their @ anymore and even if I did, I'm sure they already have changed it several times like any account does.

biggest protection from internet brain poisoning is remembering the idea “are people making up a guy and then getting really mad at that made up guy?”. sometimes you gotta just take a step back and go is this this an actual issue with actual discourse or is it just something like four people on tiktok are saying? By getting mad at this do I sound like new stations talking about a “new teen drug craze” that 100% is not a thing?

It's been some time but I'm still hung up about the fact they decided to cast Tyler Hoechlin as the new VA for Sephiroth. I think you can really tell that he isn't the most experienced in voice acting and his emotional range falls a bit flat imo. I know Sephiroth isn't an emotional character but I still think there could have been more nuance, I felt that especially while playing Crisis Core Reunion.
I think his deep voice is great for Sephiroth and I am sure he is doing his best but idk...the lines fall flat sometimes.

I know everyone was distracted by Kyuma aka YamaPs body (me too ngl) but whenever he was on screen I couldn't help staring at his hair. It looks so soft, like silk and so extremely healthy, hair goals right there. I wanted to run my hand through his hair the whole time...

The other day I was rewatching Chishiya's last scene at the hospital, and being the translation nerd that I am, I started focusing on the dialogue choices the Netflix subtitles took. I was a little baffled because some decisions felt a little out of place to me. Now, I only studied Japanese for about three or four years (which is very little when you've got an ideogram-built language in your hands), but I still felt like taking a look at the entire original dialogue. and boy was it interesting.
So I ended up writing an analysis on Chishiya and Niragi's last conversation, comparing the source text (in Japanese) and the Netflix subtitles' target text (in English). I watched using the subtitles without closed captions, so those are what I'm going to be referencing. I then ended up writing my own personal translation of their conversation. Please take note that I'm not an English native and that while fluent in English I might've lost some nuances.
If you're interested in some details of Chishiya's (and/or Niragi's) psychology that I believe got a little lost in the target text, bear with me and let's have a look at their conversation! In the first part I'm going write down both the source text and Netflix's target text (without cc), and in the second part I'm going to examine what those word choices mean and suggest my own personal translation when I feel it necessary. So - here we go!
韮木 / Niragi: 何か / Can I help you? (1)
苣屋 / Chishiya: あなたも心肺停止を体験されたらしいですね / Apparently, your heart stopped as well. (2)
韮木 / Niragi: よく知ってますね / How do you know that? (3)
苣屋 / Chishiya: 俺もだ / It happened to me too. (4)
韮木 / Niragi: 奇遇だな / What a coincidence. (5)
苣屋 / Chishiya: 死にかけたことで、何か変わりました? / Since you almost died, did anything change with you? (6)
韮木 / Niragi: どうかな。まあ、見た目が派手になったくれえだな。そっちは? / I don't know. Well, I guess I look flashier than before. What about you? (7)
苣屋 / Chishiya: 随分とダメな生き方をしてきたから、これからはもう少しマジな生き方ができそうな気がする。そんなところかな / Since I've wasted my life until now, I think I'll be able to live a more useful life from now on. That's about all. (8)
韮木 / Niragi: ろくでもねえ野郎だったのか、お前も / So you were a good-for-nothing jerk too, huh? (9)
苣屋 / Chishiya: まあね / Yeah. (10)
(1) [Lit. Something?] Here we see Niragi initiating a conversation with a stranger using directly the informal speech (known as ため口 tameguchi). It is very uncommon in japanese culture to approach an unknown person without using formal speech, thus this immediately frames his real-world character as someone who's direct and on the defensive. In my opinion, it is better translated with "Need something?", because I'd say it's a bit more aggressive and fits the character portrayal better.
(2) [Lit. Apparently, you happened to experience a cardiopulmonar arrest as well.] The first line coming from real-world Chishiya tells us two very important things about him. The first thing we notice is that he uses very technical, surgical words that definitely come from his medical knowledge: 心肺停止 shinpaiteishi is a complex word, not very much used in informal conversations. I believe that using a simple "your heart stopped" in the target text undermines Chishiya's portrayal as someone who's pretty knowledgeable about medical terms. So what I would do is write directly in the target text "cardiopulmonar arrest". The second thing we notice is the fact that, unlike Niragi, he approaches him using formal speech (known as 丁寧語 teineigo). This kind of talk is the most common and polite way to speak with an unknown person. He even uses the most respectful second-person pronoun, あなた anata, which comes out as quite detached as well.
(3) [Lit. You know that well?] Niragi's line is a direct response to Chishiya's display of medical knowledge. The most curious thing about this line, though, is the fact that Niragi appears to correct himself and use teineigo as well! This seems to be pretty unprecedented for his character, who's previously always been showed as aggressive and as direct as possible. Instead, here he falls in line with his interlocutor's formal speech use and acts polite as well. He's baffled by his vocabulary, sure, but he also replies in an equally respectful way.
(4) [Lit. Me, too.] It's funny, because what we see is a back-and-forth between tameguchi and teineigo: here Chishiya is the one using informal speech. Unfortunately European languages make this type of transition almost impossible to convey, but I think it is curious that after Niragi has adapted to the polite form common between strangers, Chishiya feels that no, perhaps informal speech is what feels more right. It's almost like he seems to acknowledge an unconscious feeling of already knowing that other person in some way.
(5) [Lit. What a fortuitous meeting.] Chishiya's switch seems to have made Niragi subtly more comfortable because he goes back to using tameguchi. Also, while I think "coincidence" is a pretty good translation, it fails to 100% convey the fact that 奇遇 kigū points at the coincidence of meeting someone. It's not simply "what a coincidence we both had a cardiac arrest"; its meaning is more along the lines of "what a coincidence that we both ended up sharing this hospital room". So once again the dialogue implicitly suggests that the two characters have some sort of connection.
(6) [Lit. Since you came close to death, did anything change?] The back-and-forth continues because Chishiya now returns to teineigo. He seems to keep the stranger at arm's length and to feel confused about whether he knows this person or not. Also, Chishiya doesn't ask whether anything changed with Niragi, because what he says is "did anything change at all?". His question is broad, referencing what could a personality trait, a new worldview, or something else entirely.
(7) [Lit. Who knows. Well, my appeareance has probably become more flamboyant. And you?] Some things to notice here as well. First of all, Niragi keeps using tameguchi; his speech pattern is pretty brash, considering the other person is officially a complete stranger who's settled on teineigo. He even uses そっち socchi as a second-person pronoun, which is not aggressive, but definitely feels colloquial. Another word choice I wanted to look at was the term 派手 hade. Now, this made me raise my eyebrows, because according to Weblio's Japanese-to-English dictionary, some of the meanings of this word are "flamboyant", "gay", "showy", "gaudy", "loud". Niragi is essentially comparing himself at the flashy way queer people are known to dress in (especially in Japan, where gay men in particular are still subject to stereotyping as funny and colorful people).
(8) [Lit. Since my way of living has been without purpose until now, I have a feeling that my way of living will be able to be a little more useful from now on. That's about it.] I'll give you three seconds to guess what Chishiya does in this line. Ready? 3, 2, 1... yes, of course he switches to tameguchi again. Once again his instinct must be telling he's got some sort of previous knowledge of this other person, and so he drops teineigo definitely. Moving on, a change that I think is important to apply to the target text is the translation of 気がする ki ga suru. It does not mean "I think" (which is a conscious action we make) and instead conveys the idea of "I have a feeling that", "I feel like" (which portrays a subconscious feeling we can't always explain). Borderland Chishiya had experiences that brought him to a conscious change of heart, but of course Real-life Chishiya doesn't know that, so what he references is a simple sensation he gets.
(9) [Lit. So you too were a worthless asshole.] Tameguchi remains the speech manner through which the conversation is carried. Niragi makes it even more personal because he uses the second-person pronoun お前 omae, which is specifically masculine in use and extremely forward, often used to directly confront the interlocutor. The word 野郎 yarō is one of the few Japanese strong insults and covers a variety of English epithets like "bastard", "son of a bitch", "asshole". Now the nuance may very but I think "jerk" is a little too mild for both the term used and Niragi's usual speech. We also see the use of the adjective ろくでもない rokudemonai, which can mean "good-for-nothing", but also "worthless", "insignificant", "up to no good", "without purpose". Once again, the nuance used here may vary.
(10) [Lit. Well.] Chishiya concludes their conversation with one of the colloquial expressions we see him using during the series, which is non-committal and generic. You could also translate it as "I suppose", "Yeah", "You could say so".
It was very interesting for me to observe how in the space of a few lines the two characters went from using polite speech and respectful pronouns to a way more informal and direct way of speaking, in just a matter of minutes. I also enjoyed seeing Chishiya's medical background making an appeareance in the source text, and his hesitance towards using an informal speech pattern with someone he doesn't remember meeting, but feels like knowing. I think there's a lot here that gets expressed in an implicit manner and in the source text only!
I definitely had a lot of fun writing this analysis, so since I'm kind of in an Alice in Borderland brainrot I may in the future consider observing the translation process of other (more important) scenes. But this was a fun approach to begin with. Thank you for reading if you've come this far!

Alright,alright! Please don't shoot !! ;;
"Darling, sweetie, bear, mouse, rabbit, treasure, my one and everything" (Those are literal translations of the pet names, except for the first one because I don't think there is a literal translation but one would translate it with "darling")
"I love you so much, you are the only person who has ever been able to conquer my heart...my very own guardian angel."
Request from my deactivated tumblr account.
Personally, I think it is very OOC but I wrote it at a time when not too much information was given to us about Vil.
"Could you perhaps write Vil trying to teach you some German in whatever format works for you!"
You ask Vil to teach you some German and lucky for you, he is in the mood to entertain you.
Tumblr media
Loud footsteps in a fast rhythm can be heard in the hallway leading to Vil’s personal room. Those steps are none other than yours.
You took a bit longer to finish writing down what is on the board so you were one of the last ones to get out of the classroom. There you nearly bumped into Rook, if he wouldn’t have the reflexes of a hummingbird. “Oh là là! Bonjour Trickster! You need to be more careful alas you will end up bumping into someone.” You apologize and ask him what he is up to since he is usually not hanging around the first-grader classrooms. “I need to pick up Monsieur Crabapple, we do have some things to attend to today, such as our French lessons.” Surprised by that, you ask him if this is included in your curriculums. “Absolument pas! But it would have been nice if our teachers also taught different languages besides the main ones...Maybe I would be able to take German and talk to Roi de Poison in German whenever we talk about a topic which he does not wish other people to hear.” ...Wait, hold on a minute, you think inside your head. Vil can speak German? Your boyfriend can speak German and you didn’t even know?? “Where is Vil right now?”, you interrupt him without a second thought. “Hmm...I think he should be in his quarter right now.” You turn and wave a quick goodbye, leaving behind a slightly confused yet amused Rook.
Having heard your footsteps, he turned away from his math homework he had sitting on his desk and looked at the door. Several seconds later he hears you knock, “It’s me! I have to talk to you!”. He told you to come in and close, not slam, the door, please. You look him dead in the eye and voice your frustration. “Why am I the only one who doesn’t know that you can speak German?”. Vil looked at you, at first he seemed surprised but then his usual poker face came back. “I do not remember you asking me what languages I can speak and considering the fact you cannot speak German, I did not deem it important enough to bring it up.”, he answered matter-of-factly. You stomped over to him, now facing him with only a few inches between your faces. “I am in a relationship with you, we are dating. Of course I wish to know as much as humanly possible about you, even if it seems of little importance to you, to me it is.” Finally understanding that you are genuinely upset, he tells you to sit down on the bed beside him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to keep it from you. I just much rather talk about other things when we actually manage to spend time together, you know I do love you a lot and I cannot spend as much time with you as I wish. But let me know if there is anything you want us to do today? I do have a bit of spare time and I wish to make it up to you somehow.” At this, your eyes light up. “Yes! I want you to teach me some German words!”, you smile brightly. “You...want me to teach you German?”, he asks, unsure why that would be something you wish to spend on, especially since he needs to push you to do study more often than not. So you wanting to learn German is kinda surreal. After a bit of hesitation, he laughs and tells you he will do that once he finishes the math homework he has been doing before you barged into his room.
Several minutes pass with you browsing through the magazine which lied on his bed. “Okay, I’m done. We can start now. But beware, I am a strict teacher, even if it is my beloved I am teaching.”, he now sits beside you with his usual charming smile. You feel like melting whenever he does that but you really want to be able to learn some German words you can use and this is a perfect opportunity.
“Okay, is there any word you have in mind or even phrases?”, he asks while taking a paper and a pen, to write down the words for you. “Hmmm, for starters I’d really like to know what ‘potato’ means, you always call certain classmates that, so I want to say it as well but if I say it in German they won’t know.” He chuckles, “That’s a really weird reason, but okay, whatever you want!”. He writes down ‘Kartoffel’ and then pronounces it slow so that you can hear how you say it correctly. Finding excitement in that, you write down a lot of words you describe Vil as so that you can call him those things in German. Like hard-working - fleißig, beautiful - wunderschön, attractive - anziehend, regal - edel, neat-freak - Putzteufel, and so on. “Hmm. that was fun, but how about you call me in all kinds of nicknames you give your lover in German”, you smirk. Vil barely called you by any pet name, so you just had to use this chance to get pampered with love-filled nicknames that you can now also call him in the hallways because no one will know what you just called him but Vil himself. He thinks for a moment. Then he gets closer to you and looks you deep in the eye and starts calling you “Liebling...Süße...Bärchen...Maus...Hase...Schatz...Mein Ein und Alles” in a hushed voice, almost making it sound sexy if he wouldn't have started laughing so hard after he finished. “Hahahaha, this was so cringy, I just can’t take it anymore! Haha...but hey, maybe that will be good acting practice, calling you all those pet names or you calling me those pet names, since this was your plan all along, wasn’t it?” Now looking at you again, with his beautiful light violet eyes. He smiles and puts his hand on your cheek before leaning in and giving you a sweet kiss. He loves his lips to your ear and nibbles softly, whispering in a low voice “Ich liebe dich so sehr, du bist die einzige Person, die es je geschafft hat mein Herz zu erobern...mein ganz persönlicher Schutzengel.” He then stands up abruptly as his smartphone alarm goes off. “Wait! What does that mean? What did you say??”, confused you ask him but he only gives you one more quick kiss, telling you with a soft smile “That’s for you to figure out.”, and leaves the room with his smartphone in hand.
