Nightmare

Platonic!Hotch x Agent!reader. Reader has a nightmare while on a case Hotch finds them and comforts them.

Not based in any specific season or case. Also this is my first actual fanfiction so it may not be very good but I hope you enjoy.

During the latest case after being forced awake by a recurring nightmare for the fifth time this week. You knew there was no way you were going to make it back to sleep. So, after an hour of procrastination you slowly get up from bed and leave your hotel room and go down to the hotel lobby, sit on the couch and continue working on the case.

After a while of studying the case file again you’ve blocked out everything else but work. You’re so focused on the case that you don’t hear Hotch leaving his room to check if you’re alright as he never heard you re-enter your room. He’s checking because this case is taking a toll on everyone including himself. So, after he gets down to the lobby and studies your hunched over form surrounded by empty coffee cups, he knows that you aren’t alright. Clearing his throat Hotch announces his presence behind you in order to not scare you.

Still reeling from your nightmare, not expecting the sudden noise, you shoot up into an upright sitting position showing your dark eye bags and shaking hands.

“Agent, you should be asleep you’re going to need your strength for the morning and you’re clearly exhausted.” Hotch confesses clearly concerned that you weren’t taking care of your health and it’s his job to ensure his team is functioning at full ability.

Even though you need comfort, averting your eyes you mumble “I’m okay Hotch just thought I could get some work done.” very clearly lying. Thinking that was all, you turn around and get right back to work.

Hotch shakes his head after spotting your obvious lie, sighing he collects the notes you had made over the case and puts them into a pile and when you tried to weakly stop him, he just pushed you back and grabbed the coffee cups and places them into the rubbish.

Then Hotch looks down at you with a raised eyebrow and in a strict tone says, “agent get up and follow me we’re going back to your room.”  

Knowing even in your state of exhaustion that there is no point in arguing with your boss shakily you get up and slowly follow him to your hotel room.

When you’ve both gotten into your room Hotch pushes you gently onto the hotel bed and takes a seat on the other side of the bed. Then after sighing deeply Hotch looks at you and places his hand on your shoulder gently asking “kid don’t lie to me this time are you alright you have huge bags under your eyes, and you haven’t stopped shaking” after getting no answer he looks at with the silent question on whether he could hug you and after getting a hesitant nod he takes you into his arms.

Realizing he wasn’t going to leave you alone until he had his answer which warmed your heart not that you’ll ever admit it you take a deep breath slowly getting it go. Saying “you’re right I’m not ok, it’s just that I’ve had a reoccurring nightmare all week and I just haven’t gotten any sleep. I’m scared Hotch.”

In response Hotch strokes your hair in a comforting motion and ensures that you are aware that everyone's alright and that having nightmares is what makes you human and that there is nothing to be ashamed of in asking for help. From this you fall asleep from the repetitive motion of Hotch stroking your head.

Sighing Hotch lays you on your bed gently and kisses your forehead then just before he closes your hotel room door he whispers “goodnight kid.” Walking back to his room smiling to himself he realizes that he’s just gotten another child
