While the sentiments below are very much still true and I still encourage you to visit my website https://mamotreco.com for an unfiltered, cookieless, proper internet experience, I realize I enjoy seeing what others post on Tumblr and I want to start posting again (maybe not as much as I did before tho).

I’m leaving my original post below for context.

This will be my last post on Tumblr (and most social media)

(TLDR; head to mamotreco.com for all my stuff. No cookies, no paywall, no AI, just my stuff)

Automattic (Tumblr’s controlling entity) is supposedly in talks with Open AI AND Midjourney to handover user content to train AI, according to reporting from The Verge

While Tumblr claims they will enable an opt-out setting, it seems sus owing to the fact that the same article surfaces my primary issue which is that the horse may have already bolted from the barn with Tumblr’s knowledge:

“But it cites internal posts that suggest the company scraped an “initial data dump” containing “all Tumblr’s public post content between 2014 and 2023,” including — apparently by mistake — content that wouldn’t be publicly visible on blogs. It’s unclear what was done with this data and what data (if any) has been sent to Midjourney and OpenAI.”

These are the same AI companies which were also perfectly happy to have CSAM in their model training data, as investigated by Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center

In conclusion, we should heed the clarion call of enshittification - It’s free because you’re the product.

I don’t want to be the product anymore and the internet means that I don’t have to be if I’m willing to put in a little effort and spend a little time and money.
