caterinasingh:
Caterina gave Monty the silent time to process and sort his thoughts as she finished jotting a few notes. A small smile appeared on her lips as he finished forming his thoughts and provided an answer. “I would agree there. It can help make people feel more welcomed. Well, I think that is a wrap. Thank you so much for your time, Monty. I’m about to go grab some coffee before heading back to the office, would you like to join?”
Tumblr media
“Sure, no problem.” At Caterina’s offer, Monty glanced down to his phone to find several new text messages from Monica, the most recent reading could you do it? “Uh, rain check? My roommate and I were debating who’s getting groceries while they’re out, and it looks like something might have come up for her, so I should go do that before I forget.”

spthorne:
Spencer listened to Monty, nodding along subconsciously. He couldn’t say he understood the the appeal of the military, but also understood how some people ended up following that path. “Anywhere I know?” he asked curiously.
“Yeah, sometimes I’m still surprised it worked out quite well. Max really knew what she wanted and we worked together to achieve a combined vision,” he said with pride for his partners. “It’s probably obvious, but clubbing isn’t really my scene,” he added with a huff.
“I know what you mean,” Spencer said thinking back to before they started the Underworld and not knowing if he made the right decisions with studying accounting, but it all worked out better than he could have planned in the end. “If you go back to school will you continue into Robotics or has something else caught your interest?”
Tumblr media
“What, where I’m working now?” Monty’s mouth quirked as he contemplated his answer. A hint of self-deprecation bled into his expression as he finally said, “Maybe? It’s too upscale for me to just... go to? But- the Lake House?”
Monty huffed out a laugh. “I may have gotten that impression,” he teased lightly. “But seriously, that’s really awesome for you guys. Working together, making a dream a reality.”
Tumblr media
“Not robotics,” Monty began, “but I wasn’t really in robotics for the robotics, per se? I was in it more for the engineering?” He’d like the designing and the building more than he’d been driven by what he was designing and building. That they’d been making robots had just been a bonus. “So I think if I were to go back to school, I’d be looking at maybe getting a mechanical engineering degree.”

logancree:
Logan also lifted his head up and turned to face the speaker with a casual smile. The vampire could smell the honey mustard from where he sat and to this day, it was not to his liking. Though a majority of food doesn’t mix with your vampire palette does it mate? To ignore the smell of the dipping, Logan lifted his drink to his lips and sipped.
“In a way yes, I suppose you’re correct. But the history can be in the actual games themselves. The creation of the games. The story behind it all.” His eyes searched the crowd then seeing the children and young adults choosing a machine of their choice. “I’m an old soul mate. The feeling a place such as this one gives off is different then choosing a game on a computer or TV flat with controllers.” Chuckling, Logan looked at Monty and quickly added, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that of course. Give it a few more hundred years and perhaps one won’t even have to use their hands but have a chip on their temple that follows the same actions X, Y, A, and B do. Then our gaming system will be history.”
Tumblr media
“Huh.” Monty’s expression turned thoughtful as he considered the other man’s perspective. He hadn’t looked at it like that before, but he could appreciate that take.
“Nah, man, I get what you mean,” Monty assured as he reached for his beer. He took a quick swig before continuing, “I grew up on like, my brother’s old Atari, and the Super Nintendo and the Nintendo 64. Some of it was arcade games, but it’s not the same as actually being in an arcade.” There was no greasy arcade food, or fumbling with your pocketfuls of quarters. No analog games. But it wasn’t better or worse; it was just different.
The other man’s concept of what video games might be like in the future brought a grin to his face. “Yeah, maybe. That might not be so far off, though. Technology’s coming a long way.”

Top three interactions or conversations that you've seen going around?
Oh it is difficult to just pick three but I’ll try. First of all, Preston Hawthorne’s almost terrible day (don’t worry darling, we’ve all been stood up before) was rescued by David Elmasri. He was truly a knight in shining armor there.
Maggie See practically lost her mind on a few people - notably Logan Cree. What on earth was going on there?
And lastly, Monty McAllister and Karen Pierce were spotted ducking away from people, quite poorly. Honestly, you’re both adults, either learn to confront your fears or hide much better.

On the topic of reigniting sparks, who would you most like to see a reunion between?
Well, I’m adoring seeing Trevor and Monty reunite. There’s nothing like best friends coming back together again. We all know that Charlotte held a torch for Wyatt for quite some time - now that they’re older, will she have the courage to do something about it? I am also waiting to see what happens when Joaquin and Valerie inevitably run into each other. Talk about drama.

trevor-wells:
“Oh no,” Trevor reassured him, “we are definitely coming. I’ll grab the whole family for this one. And I’ll make sure to personally request a table in your area, what nights do you work?” Trevor grinned good naturedly. He was kidding. Mostly.
This was the most animated he’d seen Monty in a long time, and Trevor grinned at his familiar pattern of starting and not necessarily finishing his words. But Monty’s excitement was contagious, and soon Trevor felt himself talking faster too, trying to keep up with the quick pace of the conversation. “I can’t believe that’s what you want to do– Shit,” he winced, glancing quickly at the woman who had scolded Monty and then lowering his voice. “Shit, here I thought you were gonna make this hard for me, I was prepared to like scour bulletin boards and wanted ads for the next month. But I’ll talk to Cap on Monday, see if he can get you an interview this week.” Trevor waved one hand, brushing off Monty’s concern. “It’s not nepotism, believe me I don’t carry that kind of weight. It’s all Cap’s decision at the end of the day, I’m just recommending a warm body who has an interest in getting his hands dirty. That’s just about all we need to replace Steve, honestly. Did I tell you he sent me to the hospital last year?” Trevor shook his head, he was getting off track. “You just better be as good with machines as you claim to be, otherwise Cap will never let me live it down.”
Tumblr media
Were his excitement a little less single-minded, Monty would have tossed in some kind of good-natured teasing about Trevor going out of his way to help in the job search. But he was just grateful. Grateful and so fucking ecstatic. “Thank you. So much. Seriously, you have no idea.”
He listened raptly as Trevor continued, leaning forward in his seat, coffee forgotten. But Trevor’s question pulled his train of thought away from defense of his own skills, some of his excitement finally giving way to shock. “He did what?” Trevor looked fine, but still– “Are you serious? And he’s still working there? What happened?”

charlottexkingsley:
“I sure hope so. They’re pretty quality candles, in my opinion.” And they definitely worked in case of magical emergency, as Charlotte recently discovered. “They deserve the success.”
“Oh, those kind of figurines! Okay yeah, I think I know the ones you mean.” The description he gave helped to paint a vague picture in her mind, and the more she thought about it, the more it turned into a grandmother’s curio cabinet. She nodded slowly, mentally accepting the picture. “Do they even have a name for those? Like, um… trinkets? Novelty figures? Baubles? Tchotchkes?”
Tumblr media
“Well, I would call them knickknacks,” Monty said, mouth lifting up at the corners, almost as though sharing an inside joke, “but I don’t think there’s an official name for it. I feel like figurines is the closest?” That was going to bother him, now... Maybe he’d text Monica and ask her what she called them. He shrugged. “I’ll know them when I see them, at least,” he joked.
After a beat, Monty looked down to his watch (mostly out of habit) then squinted up in the direction of the sun. “I should probably actually start walking, if I’m gonna do a lap down and back and squeeze everything in,” he mused, hooking a thumb into the pocket of his jeans, “but I wouldn’t mind the company, if you wanna come with and look for those candles?”

jenny-du:
In a town like Edgewood, Jenny had the feeling there was something more to the library than what first met the eye and if she was going to be at any help during her time here, she had to have access to as much knowledge as she can. She’d been spending more time there, getting close with the employees and browsing the history texts. Jenny was happily carting a biography on women in World War II to the front when she heard a buzz as loud as a ring and was stopped short.
Empathy was something of second nature to most whitelighters and the turmoil was written on this strangers face, easy enough for anyone to notice. Her heart clenched, the instinct to reach out and comfort exposing itself. Quietly, Jenny set down her book and took a seat across from him, her arms sliding out towards the man - a physical way of reaching out to him. Something was obviously wrong and Jenny enjoyed listening to mortal’s problems. It was literally her job to guide and she was damn good at it.
“That book any good?” she asked skeptically. If his mess hair was anything to go by, she already knew the answer. “Just doesn’t seem like it’s worth the effort.”  Jenny’s eyes then flicked over towards his phone, curiosity glinting in her eyes. “You avoiding a call?”
Tumblr media
Caught off guard by the question, having expected a grumpy patron, Monty had only his initial surprised expression to offer, before, finally, “If you like finance, I guess.” He, clearly, did not.
Though most of the other tables were empty—there were more than he could count on one hand without so much as a book on them within spitting distance—he tugged the book closer to him, making space for the woman.
“Ah–” the sound slid and ended on a strained ha– not quite a laugh, but close enough to know that the sound had fallen flat of the mark. Was he avoiding a call? “More like several,” he admitted with a grimace. Maybe it was that he hadn’t shared any of this particular problem with his friends, or even just that she was a complete stranger without any skin in the game, but he found himself continuing, “One of my brothers is...” he paused, exhaled heavily as he searched for the right words, “giving me a hard time over some.. dumb family stuff.” More quietly, he added, “I just don’t wanna talk to him right now.”

karenfrompta:
Karen looked up at the new figure who’d approached the table. He looked familiar, though she couldn’t quite place him. Either way, she smiled politely and nodded. “Yes, give me one moment and the table is yours.” She made quick work of packing up her bag and securing it on her shoulder before standing, intending to vacate the coffee shop to begin the rest of her day. At least, that had been the plan until Clarissa McAllister walked in the front door, children in tow. Karen hadn’t taken more than two steps from the table before she saw her fellow PTA mom, and she instantly froze. It wasn’t that she disliked Clarissa… well… it wasn’t that she wished ill on Clarissa. It was just that Karen had been so successful at avoiding her the last few months and she didn’t want to lose that streak here, in public, on a day where she had so much else she needed to be doing.
Immediately Karen weighed her choices. There would be little to no chance of slipping out of the store without Clarissa noticing her, and even if she did, Clarissa had the kids with her and one of them was sure to call out hello. But simply continuing to stand here, even in the back corner of the coffee shop, was bound to attract her attention regardless, and the familiar-looking stranger had already sat at her table. But that table, tucked in the back like it was, might be far enough away from the door… With little to no choice of anywhere better to hide, Karen made her decision. Backtracking to the table she’d just vacated, Karen quickly dropped back into her seat, pulling her purse into her lap and offering her most winning smile to the man now sitting on the other side. “I forgot one other thing I needed to do,” she chirped brightly, like they were old friends. “And then I’ll be out of your way. But you’re welcome to stay, I won’t take the table from you,” she offered magnanimously, as if she hadn’t already left it. Ducking her head, Karen began to quickly rummage through her purse, as if looking for something, hoping Clarissa would leave as quickly as she’d come in.
Tumblr media
“Sure, no problem.” Monty waited until after she had stepped away from the table to take the seat that had been opposite hers.
His glance in the direction of the cafe’s entrance was more of an absent thing while he fished one of the books out of the small backpack he’d brought, than anything else. The pair of teenage girls who’d somehow managed to project their conversation to a volume that cut through the humdrum of peak hours almost slid out of his attention as quickly as they had entered, would have, even, had they not been trailed by the more familiar face of his nephew Johnathan, and— oh shit.
Monty had just enough time to register Clarissa following after her three eldest with her youngest in tow, had planted a hand on the table and started to rise from his chair like he was considering getting up to put his back to the door, when the seat across from him was suddenly occupied once more, Karen dropping herself back in the chair she had just vacated. He wasn’t sure what expression he had on his face, but it was probably in line with the stunned, “Uh?” that he managed, only partially in answer to the tone far chummier than her initial words had been.
He sat like that for a moment or two, caught between the flight response seeing Clarissa had triggered and the stillness brought on by being so caught off guard by Karen’s sudden return, until one of the twins turned her head in the direction of the back of the cafe, and Monty abruptly sat himself back down, gaze snapping back to Karen from where it had drifted to watch his older sister and her kids.
Well, shit.
He really didn’t want to open up a book on something someone like Karen might actually have interest in and lock himself into the potential of a conversation about it, but he also didn’t have a lot else on him to look busy with, just in case Clarissa did spot him. Buy it, Rent it, Profit! started up at him in glaringly large print on the cover of the book Elias had foisted onto him. Monty managed a strained smile, put his hand down over the book, and drew it back toward him.
“Trevor said something about you making tarts for the carnival this year?”

trevor-wells:
Trevor snorted at the reference to designer brands, it was definitely true that people like the Pierces, and he would guess the elder McAllisters, drove the sales of bigger name retailers in town. “There’s certainly a better food scene, at least,” he acknowledged, thinking of all the restaurants still on his to-try list.  “Which one are you a waiter at, by the way? Or soon-to-no longer be a waiter at?”
At Monty’s words, Trevor sat up straighter, and leaned forward so quickly he bumped the table in doing so. He made an automatic face of panic as he grabbed at his coffee cup and the side of the table to avoid knocking anything over. Once it was stabilized, he smoothed his face back into the original eager look and leaned forward as he’d intended, putting his elbows on the coffee table. “Well shit, man, why didn’t you lead with that?” He shook his head in amazement. “You know, I still work at Fuzion Motors, the mechanic’s downtown? And I happen to know firsthand there might be someone getting fired soon. It’s not–,” he continued quickly, holding up one finger before Monty could jump on him, “me, before you even ask. It’s this other guy I think we’d all be very happy to see go.”
Tumblr media
“The Lake House,” Monty answered. And then he had the mental image of Trevor coming into the restaurant and seeing him suffer through the whole button-up, slacks, thankless job thing and was quickly tacking on, “But I swear to god, if you show up and make me use my customer service voice, I’ll fight you.” He was kidding, of course. Mostly.
Trevor’s lurch forward had Monty jerking into motion to stabilize his own coffee, other hand mirroring Trevor’s in stilling the table... and subtly pushing it back toward Trevor, as it had shoved closer to Monty in the fray. “Dude,” he laughed. But once Trevor had provided context for his excitement, Monty was right there with him.
“Dude. Dude. You’re shitting me—” That earned him a loud throat clearing and sharp glare from the woman a few tables over with her small child, and he offered her a sheepish, “Sorry, ma’am,” but didn’t lose much steam in barreling back into the excitement of a potential job he’d actually like. “I’m not like– nepotism or whatever, but– I know my career background isn’t exactly the same, but–” None of those were complete thoughts. He had too many bouncing around to finish one sentence before moving on to the next; all he could hope was that Trevor still knew how to keep pace with him.
“Dude,” he repeated. “I can’t believe I forgot you work at a mechanic’s.”
