VR Sex — Hard Copy (Dais)
Listeners and readers of a certain age (ahem) will remember Hard Copy, the tabloid-style entertainment news show that made its bones on broadcasting salacious, titillating and graphically violent images through the 1990s. VR Sex, a post-punk outfit from LA, trades in related semiotics, at least on the surface of this new record — and Hard Copy was nothing but surface. Does VR Sex have greater depth? The jury is out on that one, and the band will likely welcome the deferred verdict. They seem to like toeing the lines of morbidly libidinal transgressions, pushing various hot buttons, provoking the squares. See the partially deflated sex doll on the album’s cover, or song titles like “Hush Money Millionaire” and “Space Invasion,” enjoying the ironies of which may require at least minimal critical activity on the part of the consumer. Sure. But “Hard Copy” is a rock record, so maybe we should be asking: Is the music any good?
It is — but it’s also complicated by the formal ironies that have marked (or plagued) postpunk music from the jump. See “Inanimate Love” for a relevant example. The tune’s opening minute channels the dissonance of Sonic Youth, c. 1986. The signature riff and melody kick in, and you are projected toward the UK, especially the Jesus and Mary Chain in their Darklands-period of struggle with sudden fame. When Andrew Clinco (whose name some will recognize from his high-concept work as Drab Majesty) starts to sing, things get decidedly more louche. A particular strain of West Hollywood freak — hairdo as important as guitar tone, sunglasses worn on stage — creeps toward the music’s center, ghosts of Christian Death and Tomata du Plenty flit in and out like punk rock poltergeists. The song has come home.
None of those names is particularly problematic, but their combination and the sense that the band wants you to summon at least some of them are less straightforward matters. It’s an old saw, the extent to which anything post- is necessarily pastiche, and the resulting arguments that used to feel intrinsically political are all but exhausted. Or maybe we are just too tired. If that second supposition is correct, then songs like “Jenny Killer Glue” and “In Great Detail” seem poised for our pleasure. Flashy and cool, cynical and sexy, they have that rock’n’roll quality of cultural noise that is calculated and dangerous in equal measure.
Here’s another way of putting that: How do you reinvest a half-deflated sex doll with erotic energy? Pay attention to the terms there: they assume that the sex doll was full of erotic investments in the first place. And of course it was. The fact that the commodity form exists (the doll in its original packaging, behind the counter of the porn shop, or these days available on Amazon, for your convenience) means that culture has already distributed the investment, whatever your intent or surface-level interest might be.
So, listen to VR Sex’s “Real Doll Time.” The song’s upbeat energies evoke Wire in a sassy mood, but the vocals are pure West Hollywood. The tune sweeps you along, danceable and rockin. Dig it. But what’s “real doll time,” and what’s a real doll? Mostly: what’s “real” here? Think too hard about those questions and you’ll miss the gag: Clinco’s repeated enunciations of the title phrase become indistinguishable from a different read. It starts to sound like “real dull time.” That’s funny—the gag is on us, always has been. But meanwhile the song churns away, and it closes with 90 seconds of a terrific, slightly mournful and sorta sweet new melody, expertly clad in postpunk textures. Another band would have made a whole song out of it. VR Sex poses it as a throwaway, and it’s exactly the right gesture. Like a smoke, lit, dragged on once or twice, and tossed from the stage. Did you get burned? Good. At least you felt something.

It had been years since Monty had spent this much time in the library. But with his parents pushing to close their deliberations over the trust fund, and Monty still struggling to figure out if he would even know what to do with it all, if he accepted even part of the assets his parents had set aside, the library’s books on all things financial planning had seen a lot of him recently.
He huffed an irritated breath down at the book he had open on All Things Stock Market, running a hand through his already messy curls. Why hadn’t he tried some kind of investing earlier in his life? His lack of planning was coming back to bite him in the ass. Again.
His phone had been buzzing on the table with text messages for the past few minutes, but it wasn’t until he had to rush to silence a phone call that he admitted defeat and put his phone on airplane mode. Anyone not his family looking to get in touch with him would understand... probably.
When someone’s shadow crossed the table he’d claimed and didn’t continue past, he was grimacing apologetically before he’d even looked up, assuming this was about all the noise. “Sorry, I swear, I silenced it.”

Il semble que depuis mars 2020, les groupes Facebook jouissent d’une popularité fulgurante. La plupart affichent des règles évidentes de savoir-vivre; s’il y a quelques mois, je m’étonnais de constater qu’il est maintenant courant de statuer a priori sur celles-ci, j’ai fini par comprendre qu’on ne pouvait tenir ces règles pour acquises par chacun. Il semble que nous ayons collectivement besoin de guidance pour des échanges respectueux.
Ne me lancez pas de tomates!
Tous les groupes auxquels je participe depuis belle lurette ont vu leur nombre de membres exploser. Au sein des nouvelles communautés virtuelles, qu’il soit question d’abeilles, de champignons, de permaculture ou d’écologie, les publications abondent, les commentaires fusent généreusement et les réactions pleuvent. Toute cette activité indique que nous sommes une foule à partager le même espace, confortablement cachés derrière nos écrans. C’est dire que, privés de contacts avec nos proches, nous avons radicalement multiplié nos échanges avec des étrangers, et on dirait bien qu’avec ceux-ci, il est plus facile de laisser les gants blancs bien au fond du placard, même quand il est simplement question de taches brunes sur les feuilles d’un plant de tomates!
Bien-aimée, la communauté.
Qu’on ne se méprenne pas, je trouve ça extraordinaire, cette multiplication des voix et cet accès à un grand nombre de cerveaux disposés à partager leur connaissance. Je suis également profondément touchée par l’intérêt que portent les gens à la nature et par les démonstrations de solidarité qui ne se limitent plus à un espace géographique précis (voir : le projet de Loïck!). C’est pourquoi, afin de préserver l’amour de l’échange, j’appelle à la douceur, à la bienveillance et à l’empathie.
Je ne te vois pas la face, mais ce que tu me dis me « rentre
dedans ».
Certains comportements nocifs en ligne sont plus faciles à identifier que d’autres : une photo partagée sans consentement, une pluie d’insultes publiquement adressées, rumeurs, dénigrement, menaces. Il est question ici de cyberintimidation et nous y sommes davantage sensibilisés. Nous en connaissons les effets.
Les comportements qui me préoccupent, ici et maintenant, sont plus insidieux, pernicieux. Ils peuvent se glisser dans un groupe sans faire de vague apparente, mais ils détiennent un pouvoir certain puisque la rudesse et les jugements ne font pas moins mal lorsqu’ils sont reçus de façon virtuelle. Plusieurs psychologues s’entendent là-dessus. Ayant étudié de près la thématique du rejet en ligne, le chercheur Baldwin Way de l’Université de Californie à Los Angeles a constaté avec surprise que : « la réaction neurologique au rejet [réaction de douleur émotive] se produit même quand [celui-ci survient] en ligne, en l’absence du langage corporel, des intonations de la voix et d’autres aspects des relations en face à face […] » (Psychomédia, 2009).
D’autres affirment que le manque de nétiquette produit un effet boule de neige et touche autant les participants d’une conversation que les spectateurs, affectant ainsi la dynamique d’un groupe qui pourtant, a été créé pour stimuler des échanges positifs entre humains.
(…) trop souvent, se retrouvent exposés aux yeux de tous des messages manifestement destinés à une personne. Ces situations peuvent en amuser certains, mais elles génèrent aussi leur lot de malaise, de gêne, d’agacement et de moquerie tant chez le destinataire que chez les lecteurs, devenus, malgré eux, spectateurs de cet échange (Coulombe, 2016).
Lors de ma recherche, je n’ai pas trouvé d’étude scientifique s'intéressant à l’anxiété générée par un commentaire trop expéditif ou trop neutre pour pouvoir être interprété avec justesse. Cependant, mon expérience me fait réfléchir à cette question. Suis-je seule à ressentir un malaise à la suite d’une réponse floue, d’apparence dépourvue de bienveillance?
Chose certaine, c’est que les psychologues du Centre d’aide aux étudiants de l’Université Laval considèrent la souffrance liée aux interactions négatives en ligne suffisamment importante pour y consacrer un dossier sous la rubrique « Difficultés fréquentes ».
Modèles positifs : manifestez-vous!
Ce qu’on appelle aujourd’hui « manque de nétiquette » a également préoccupé Jenny Preece, chercheuse américaine, qui s’est intéressée à cette question dans le cadre de ses recherches sur les communautés virtuelles. Selon elle, le besoin, pour tous les internautes, de cultiver ce qu’elle nomme une « forte étiquette » (traduction libre de : « strong etiquette ») est d’autant plus d'actualité que le monde virtuel est une communauté de plus en plus diversifiée, et ce, à bien des égards : valeurs, coutumes, sens de l’humour, éducation… « [...] the lack of it [etiquette] is weakening sociability and even destroying online communities. Strong etiquette online is no longer just nice to have, it is necessary » (Preece, 2004, p. 56). Selon elle, il ne tient pas uniquement à un modérateur de veiller à l’application de celle-ci, ce serait aussi grâce à des personnes agissant comme modèle que le climat positif d’un groupe peut être préservé.
It seems obvious that role models could be used more online. After all, it’s the way children learn etiquette. Online moderators and early adopters tend to be role models for those that follow. By greeting, acknowledging and praising participants, they encourage a climate of appreciation and respect that fosters etiquette. (Preece, 2004. p. 59).
Prises de parole empathiques pour échanges sympathiques
Ainsi il semblerait que, pour que le savoir-vivre survive à l’environnement numérique, nous avons besoin de faire plus de place aux « éléments fondamentaux de la communication : […] l’empathie, l’ouverture d’esprit, la tolérance et une attitude positive » (Coulombe, 2016). En dépit de nos parcours différents et de nos bagages éclectiques, nous avons tous fort à gagner en appliquant ces principes mis de l'avant par Marshall Rosenberg à travers son processus de Communication NonViolente. Ce dernier est destiné principalement à la résolution de conflits, mais il peut aussi permettre de les éviter et d'harmoniser nos interactions.
L’empathie est la capacité qu’a un interlocuteur de se mettre à la place de l’autre. Cette qualité favorise l’usage de diplomatie et du discernement, d’une part dans le choix des propos, et d’autre part dans le traitement des situations. L’ouverture d’esprit et la tolérance ouvrent la voie à [un échange] exempt de jugement. Enfin, un dernier élément fort appréciable en communication interpersonnelle est l’adoption d’une attitude positive, source de rétroactions saines et constructives. (Coulombe, 2016).
Bienveillance et courtoisie : comment exprimer une idée, même divergente, avec élégance.
Avant de commenter une publication, lisez-la en entier et cernez le besoin de l’auteur. (Indice : il est souvent indiqué sous forme de question.)
Avant d'ajouter un commentaire, prenez connaissance de ceux qui le précèdent pour s'assurer que votre propos est original.
a. Si l’idée a déjà été partagée, marquez d’un émoticon au
choix votre accord et poursuivez votre chemin virtuel.
b. Si l’idée est nouvelle, et que vous seriez prêt à la partager
dans un contexte où tous seraient présents dans la même
pièce, contribuez.
c. Si l’idée est nouvelle, qu’elle ne concerne pas la publication
en question, mais qu’elle est somme toute pertinente,
faites-en une autre.
N'oubliez jamais que l’auteur d’une publication reçoit une alerte pour indiquer une contribution; lui servir une réponse qui apparaît déjà 12 fois n’est pas considéré comme une contribution de valeur, mais plutôt comme une participation aussi pertinente qu’une roche dans une chaussure.
Si un commentaire manque de nétiquette à vos yeux, prenez la parole en redoublant d’efforts pour la dénoncer tout en communiquant une attitude de respect. Peu importe la réponse de son auteur, vous offrirez solidarité et réconfort à la personne visée, tout en contribuant au sentiment de sécurité du groupe. Votre exemple compte.
Souvenez-vous : même si on ne se voit pas la face, on peut commencer un commentaire par « Bonjour [untel]! » et conclure un échange par « merci pour ton partage ». En 2021, ce sont toujours des marques de politesse socialement reconnues.
La délicatesse avec les mots a toujours sa place. Un commentaire introduit par « Je ne suis pas tout à fait d’accord » sera mieux reçue et ira plus loin que celui qui s'objecte avec un : « C’est dont bin d’la marde ce que tu dis! ». Dans l’univers virtuel, si les connaissances sont les bienvenues, la hargne et la rudesse, on peut s’en passer.
Soignez toujours votre ton. Au besoin, aidez-vous des émoticons appropriés pour pallier le vocabulaire manquant et garder en tête qu’un propos excessivement neutre peut être reçu avec confusion. Relisez-vous avant de partager votre grain de sel à la planète.
N’oubliez jamais qu’être en désaccord avec une idée, ne vous donne pas le droit de porter un jugement public sur son émetteur, et ce, qu’il lui soit directement adressé ou sournoisement glissé dans le fil des commentaires en s’adressant à tous les autres.
Je terminerais mon appel à la douceur en rappelant que:
Sur les réseaux sociaux, l’empathie est la clé d’une communication saine et respectueuse tout simplement parce qu’elle permet de rester conscient qu’il y a un humain derrière l’écran, une personne habitée par des sentiments et des émotions. (Coulombe, 2016)
