"It is important not to be Pollyannaish, but cynicism is also destructive. We should balance a recognition of the immense challenges we confront with an understanding that there are also harvests of hope."
From Steady newsletter by Dan Rather and Elliot Kirschner
(it's always a great newsletter, btw)

I'm not sure which way her last (pen) name is supposed to be spelled, but this is how it was on the title page.

Great burn, or greatest burn?
"If your time is of any value, pray don't let me detain you."

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, was speculative and irresolute, and we have a great tragedy in consequence. But if his father had lived to a good old age, and his uncle had died an early death, we can conceive Hamlet’s having married Ophelia, and got through life with a reputation of sanity, notwithstanding many soliloquies, and some moody sarcasms toward the fair daughter of Polonius, to say nothing of the frankest incivility to his father-in-law.
George Elliot on Shakespeare
The Mill on the Floss

Spring books
I wrote a little blog post about books that I always think about in spring. I've got The Wind in the Willows, Enchanted April, The Secret Garden, and Little Town on the Prairie (partly because it opens in spring and partly because it's the book after The Long Winter.)

1)  I’m older than Elinor and Marianne’s mom.
2)  I’m older than the older men!
3)  Like many others, I have more and more sympathy for Charlotte.
4)  I am older than Jane Austen herself was when she died.
5)  One really good thing: after around 35, I stopped comparing myself to any Austen heroines.

wow, I had no idea that my little book blog/tumblr was so sexy. I just fought off, like, fifteen sexbots. I apologize to anyone who was traumatized by the apparently overpowering allure of my tumblr.
