Ok I was thinking a lot about how Mortimer fits into my Celestial AU, because man the decision to cast Lee Van Cleef as two separate characters keeps me up at night. and I think I’ve settled on a thought I like. I think he and Angel Eyes are the same person in this AU, and after his defeat in GBU, he was forced to look his hubris in the eyes and learn humility. And in A Few Dollars More, there’s a central theme around greed, yeah? And the villains are destroyed by their own greed, and Mortimer rejects that cash in the film, giving it all to Manco. So to me that is Angel Eyes growth.

Additionally, I think he and Manco/Blondie recognize each other when they first meet, but are basically like NOT THIS GUY AGAIN!! But as the film progresses, the two break down the barrier of them “knowing each other” and ACTUALLY knowing each other. I think this could be shown in sooo many ways. Like Blondie shooting his hat repeatedly. And his initial betrayal of Mortimers proposal to be partners, but this time Mortimer sees it coming.

And then I think Mortimers sister was also an Angel, but since suicide is a “grave sin” she becomes a fallen Angel, and I don’t really know if this happens before, after, or simultaneously with Angel Eyes becoming a fallen Angel.

Anyway! I’m not saying this is what I actually think the movies trying to say, this is just in the terms of my own personal AU. The trilogy gives so much subtext and not a lot of text that I think it’s cool to fill in the blanks in your own way.

It’s really interesting to me that every POTO fan kinda has a different interpretation/version of Erik (and the other characters too, but I find the deviation in people’s Erik’s is a lot greater). Like to some of us he is literally just a silly guy and to others he is like sin reincarnate.

I think it’s really cool and I think a lot of it comes from which sources people read/watched first. My ass didn’t watch the 2004 movie until way later and I think it shows a lot in my Erik design.

I’m also super fond of the Charles Dance version, which comes through in my characterization of him quite a bit!
