The couple has been engaged for almost six months. They knew the process wouldn't be all sunshine and roses, but neither Rafe nor y/n prepared for the conflicts.
"All I'm saying, y/n, when we combine our finances, I can take care of you and Willow. You won't need to work some dumb assistant job." Rafe sternly spoke, hip rested on the counter. His wife to be sat at the kitchen, head bowed.
It was late, Willow asleep in her room, but the only time the couple could truly talk it through. "But I am your assistant. I love getting to work along side you and for you. I want to bring something to this marriage and help out." He tried to cut her off, but she persisted. "I want to work."
Y/n didn't want to sit around and be some trophy housewife. Working gave her purpose and fulfillment outside of her daughter.
"Babe all I am saying is you can persue painting and we would still have more than enough to live comfortably." For some reason that rubbed her the wrong way, setting off an undefinable emotion with her heart. Instead of blowing up, y/n took a deep breath and turned to him.
"Rafe, I think we need time to cool off and we can talk about it tomorrow after work. I just-" Rafe slightly huffed.
He wasn't sure when he got angry over this, but he let it fester deep within. Maybe it was something kelce said about Rafe needing to be the bread winner, or some kook socialite saying it's unprofessional for a wife to work for you. He just wanted her to live without any worry, even if it meant he had to work harder. "Yea. Sure. That works. I'll go."
Y/n's heart shook in fear with every short response he gave. The man shuffled for his keys and b-lined it for the door. "Rafe I-"
"Love you too. Bye." And he was gone. What happened? She knew the engagement put on more pressure, but the fights over things that seemed trivial were draining, if it wasn't work, it was education for willow, and if not living arrangements, it was honey moon details. It worried her how Rafe would just walk out first chance he got. Maybe he was trying to give her the space she needed but the lack of communication caused many restless nights and anxious thoughts. This would be another sleepless night.
It wasn't much different for Rafe. The large man sat in his spinning chair at the office. He was so accustomed to holding y/n tight as he drifted into slumber, his own bed felt foreign and he would much rather get some work done then waste time replaying every mistake that took place prior. Rafe's mind drifted to the painful look she gave him as he walked out. It's how he imagined his face looked when his dad would head to the office during his birthday celebrations or when he was sharing something with him. Why was this harder?
By the time the two made contact in the office, instant regret flooded the room. Y/n rushed to the tired man, rubbing her thumbs across his cheeks. "You didn't sleep here did you?" She already knew the answer due to the wrinkles in yesterday's clothes and dried drool on his cheek.
"I just had some things to finish up." It was half the truth. When he was at home, sometimes the temptations for past things haunted him. At the office, he felt in control. He never knew how to explain it to her, but sometimes he just needed this as a distraction.
"You're working more than usual, Rafe." Y/n's voice was stern yet caring. "You'd yell at me if I worked half as much as you have been."
His voice became defensive. "Of course I would. You have a kid."
Y/n physically reeled back. "Willow. Her name is Willow." It was the first time he made her daughter feel like a problem.
"That's not what I meant." Rafe appologized profusely.
"She's my kid. My problem? Is that how you see it?"
"Just listen, I didn't-"
"No, you listen to me Rafe. We talked about Willow. You said she was your daughter, that you loved her like your own. But it seems to be whenever it's convenient."
Worry etched every line of his face. "One time. I wasn't thinking."
Y/n's breathing became labored as she tried to remain calm. "That's not how being a parent works. Maybe I have more thinking to do."
"Wh- what do you mean?" Rafe stopped all motion and stared at his fiancé in fear. "You don't-"
"Maybe we just need more time. So you can either start thinking like a parent or realize you want out." Her heart shattered just thinking about the thought of losing him, but everything was overwhelming, the fights, the engagement, and much more. Maybe it was her insecurities, but y/n had to think for her daughters sake.
"Baby." His eyes watered. "Please."
As monotone as she could, y/n looked him dead in the eye. "I'm taking a sick day." With that she walked out, barely holding it together.
Rafe threw his papers off his desk, fighting the rage bubbling inside him. God why couldn't he think before he speaks. Rafe felt like the biggest fuck up possible. Did he really just lose the two best things in his life.
Ward happened to be on his way to drop papers off for his son when he saw his future daughter in law rush out. "Y/n!" He wasn't greeted with the typical smile and that worried him. "What's going on?"
Nothing prepared him for the words that answered. "I think I just broke up with rafe?" Her voice shook in question, unsure of the events. Tears began to pour out with no care who was in ear shot. Rafe was bound to hear the heart wrenching wails.
"What happened, Sweetheart?" He tried to consul the girl now in his arms.
"I have to go. I can't be here. Consider this my two weeks. I'm so sorry, I just-"
Ward could barely process what she was saying. "We'll work this out. I want you here at the company. You're a valued member."
"What about-" she couldn't bring herself to say his name.
"Take the next few days off, when your ready we'll talk. You can work through me from home." He didn't want to lose her and Ward didn't want his son to lose her completely either. She was the best thing to happen to the family.
"I don't know, I just need to leave." With that she rushed out, leaving the two Cameron's to share some heated words.
- It's been a week since y/n saw Rafe and the distance felt like a death sentence. She took Willow to the mainland to get them out of anything that reminder them of rafe. okay The poor younger girl didn't understand why he wasn't around, just that mommy was sad when she asked if he was joining. "I'm sorry mommy. Don't cry mommy."
Y/n ran a hand over her daughters hair, smoothing out the knots caused by the ferry ride. "It's going to be okay."
"Rafe will come back. He promised." More pain surged the mothers heart. Part of wanted to scream at Willow and say that Rafe had to much pride to reach out and he's the one who ruined it, but it would be the farthest from the truth. He texted her nearly any chance he could, leaving an abundance or voice mails. Sometimes he wouldn't even speak, just the shakey breaths and whimpers. She was the one running it. She chose to ignore him for the sake her own pride and dignity. The way she love Rafe terrified her, but she didn't want Willow to be more hurt.
All of a sudden her phone began to ring. She tried to ignore it, believing it was Rafe again but something deep down urged her to check. 'Ward Cameron.' Hee screen flashed.
"Hello, Ward."
"Hey sweetheart, how are you doing?" He kept his voice soft, noticing hers was shaking.
"I'm fine. Is there something that you needed?" Talking to ward seemed to be a lot harder for the only fact he wasn't his son.
"I know you're taking time off and spending time with Willow, but I was wondering if you could swing by the office so we can chat? Please. Willow is more than welcomed. You know I love her." Y/n let at a heavy sigh. She hasn't been to the office since she walked out on Rafe, but it was a Sunday and from what she heard he was visiting Topper.
"I think Willow would love to see you. We will head there when we get back."
"Good. Good. Well I will see you two then." She hung up and let anxious thoughts consume her.
Y/n's body shook as she gripped her daughter, stepping of the ferry and the whole way to her office. It wasn't long before she was unlocking the work place.
Willow began to squirm, looking around the space. "Rafe?" Her small voice called out.
"Shhh. He isn't here, Willow."
The child continued as she began to wail. "I want rafe. H- he promised he would be my friend. Why does he hate me?"
Y/n heart shattered. Rafe did love Willow. The mother knew it without a doubt. She had let her emotions cloud judgement and pushed him away. It was her own insecurities and she fucked it up. "He doesnt hate you."
"He said he would be my dad so people would be my friend." The mother set Willow down, allowing her to run and search the office in anguish. "He doesnt want me."
Ward heard the commotion, stepping out in sight. "Running in my office? You're lucky it's after hours."
"Papaw!" She sobbed, running to him.
"Hello, sweetheart. How are you doing?"
"I miss, Rafe." Ward's eyes fluttered to see the tear stained mother. "Where is he?"
Y/n tried to speak but feared she'd burst any second. There was no way she would embarrass herself infront of her boss. "He's been super busy. I'm sure he just hasn't had anytime."
"He doesn't love us, does he mommy?"
"Shh, baby girl." The mom did everything to console her daughter who was now a mess in her arms. "Please calm down." Within ten minutes, Willow managed to wear herself to a sleep.
"Poor girl, is missing her naps."
"I don't think that's the only thing she misses." Ward placed a warm hand on y/n's shoulder. "It's okay if you miss him too."
It was if that was all she needed to release all the buildt up emotion. Tears and cries poured out from every crack in her heart. "I didn't listen to him. I didn't want to listen to him."
Ward set Willow down on a comfy chair then tended to the mother. "Things are stressful it's bound to happen."
"I'm just so scared. What if he just changes his mind and dips? That would hurt way worse then right now. Willow is young enough she'll forget eventually." All of it was true, but she also didn't want to live without him. It's been hell for them and it would be a lot worse. Only Rafe would make it better.
"When rafe was about Willow's age, he played on an instructional soccer league. Every Saturday, he would kick around a ball with some other kids. Nothing to special. Around the same time, I started working those Saturday's." Ward scrunched his face to hide the emotions he felt. "The way he'd walk in with a smile until he saw me, then silently rush to his room. I don't think I'll ever forget that. I know he hasn't. He still brings up the first time and everytime I wasn't there. Kids don't really forget it, they bury it deep and it becomes who they are."
"What are you trying to say?"
"It's better to work on it. If you let this go, what lesson will that teach Willow? That people argue so you have to leave before you get left? I see fear in your eyes. Just talk to him."
"Is that why you called me here? To get me to talk to him?"
"You guys both are hurting and I worry about you both."
Y/n let out a shaky sigh. She knew Ward had only the best intentions and that he was right. Any anger she held onto was released through more silent sobs. "I think I ruined everything."
"I highly doubt that. Rafe looks at you as if you were the sun and stars. He stares at the picture of the three of you when dragged him with you the first time. He still loves you and where there is love, and only there can forgiveness take place."
His words brought hope as she frantically stood up. "I need to go talk to him. I can't keep running."
"I got Willow. She's more than welcome to spend the night." Y/n embraced the older man, still sobbing on his chest.
"Thank you." With that, the woman ran to her car and sped the whole way to Rafe's home. The living space he desperately wanted to bring Willow and herself into. A place he brought to show how much he loved them and appreciated them. The life she nearly denied him of.
But he hurt her feelings, dismissing her wants. Both parties really needed to communicate on this.
Rafe sat at his desk in a back room, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. Where did things go so wrong? What happened? Sure he's been stressed with work and the wedding in a month. It was a large adjustment. He was just praying the pair could survive.
That's when he heard sniffling that pulled him from his thoughts. There she was, in her most purest form. Completely vulnerable and broken. "I'm sorry." She whimpered.
Rafe stayed speechless. "I'm so used to complete control. It makes me feel secure. I know what ever happens would be on me. But I also love working for you. I love watching your face light up when you complete a small task, how you hold my hand in meetings. I get to spend time with you in a different setting. But I don't want any of the that if I can't have you. If I can't guarantee you come home to Willow or me. I want you."
"Y/n. I love you. I don't like or agree with you ignoring me and not communicating that, but I have had time to think and really do some searching of what I want." She held her breath, fearing this would be the end, but he continued. "I also don't like you working for me. It feels so wrong when I see you as an equal. Much more than that. Fuck were litterally engaged." His eyes widened. "We are still engaged, right?"
"Yes."
"So be my partner. Don't work for me. Let's work together. If you want a day off, take it. You can do whatever you like. We do it all together. It is a family buisness after all."
"Rafe-"
"I mean it. What do you say?"
"Can we take tomorrow off?" Y/n sheepishly smiled.
"What do you have in mind?"
"An us day with Willow. And your family. And we could go on an adventure."
He grinned. "We could take a family trip to the mainland."
"Or maybe the courthouse?"

JJ lifted his lips from the rig, releasing a large puff of smoke and a stifled cough. It was if he was miles away despite sitting few feet. On any other day, he would offer you a hit with the silly lopsided grin. Instead, JJ gently placed the glass piece back to the corner.
Your heart fluttered as he turned his attention to you. The depth of color his eyes held managed to trap you in a stance. "So we he haven't really talked about these past few weeks." The blonde boy let his words drag on, stalling for more time. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt you.
You on the other hand felt relief. If the two of you could talk about it, you could work pass the weird funk and miscommunication on both ends. It hadn't been easy. "Yea." You breathed out.
JJ tried to put his thoughts in words. That was never something he was good at but he wanted to try. He hated this feeling. "I know there's been some distance and I am the one who has placed it there."
You felt like you understood where he was going with it and tried to muster up the right thing to say. "It seemed like you were going through something and wanted to deal with it on your own."
"Um, I want to tell you that I haven't been single for more than a few months in the past eight years and I-" The feeling of dread kicked in as you realized what he was saying. "I want to know what that's like."
"You want to enjoy it and see what's out there." The tightness in your throat became suffocating, but you weren't going to project that onto him. He didn't deserve to feel guilty for putting himself first. You wanted to tell him what you were thinking but the words stayed jumbled in your head, burring itself in your heart.
"Not like that. But I want to figure out what it's like to be on my own." You understood where he was coming from. In fact, you went through a similar self journey of wanting to get to know yourself. It had been a year long right before you reconnected with him. It's unfortunate that your journeys didn't line up. He was just beginning.
"I respect that, JJ. I don't really know what to say. I'm glad you are trying to figure yourself out." I just wish he could take me along. But that wasn't the case, you knew that's not how it works.
"Thank you." A silence filled the room. You never noticed that he paused the show. A few words were exchanged, but nothing you processed. Just that you two would remain friends and finish the episode.
The two of you sat on the chest in front of his bed. Your knees pulled up to your chest, eyes glued to the screen. The emotions were coming and going, but you wouldn't let him see anything but understanding and love. When it got too much, you excused yourself with a smile before silently letting the tears fall in the bathroom.
He deserves to love himself on his own, you thought to yourself. In whole you were happy for him. JJ was making big strides for himself. That doesn't mean it didn't hurt. This would take some healing.
Society tells you how to deal with heartbreak. "It's always their fault." "Talk shit and let your anger out." But you couldn't make him a villain. That's not who you are. Although he wasn't officially yours, for the past four months, it's only been the two of you.
JJ began to worry as time began to pass by. It's been almost five minutes. Part of him wanted to go knock on the door and ask if you were alright, but who was he kidding. He knew this wouldn't be a tear free event, the way you took everything to heart made his heart ache.
By the time you did return, he didn't see anything but your joy filled eyes and smiled. How much you were actually hiding, he could never tell. You always were good at masking it.
The episode wrapped up soon after and next thing you realized, your unlocking the apartment door, trying not to think of it as the last time you'll be there. You almost missed JJ's open arms. He did his best to disguise it as him holding himself up on the wall but you weren't going to pass it up.
Without a second thought or care in the world, you held on to him. Taking in the scent of weed and teakwood. The way he pulled you a little closer broke you. That was the final straw before you softly departed. "I'll see you around, y/n."
"Ya." And then you were gone. Tears slipping out with every step away from apartment 118 -E.
I didn't even say goodbye.

"It's going to be okay, babe." He cooed, pressing a gentle kiss to your knuckles.
It's crazy how far the two of have come from that fateful day on the beach. You'd be lying through your teeth if you said it wasn't a rocky start when you moved in. The nightmares that JJ once protected you from now had new knight and shining armor. The meaningless banter now shared with topper instead of the sandy brown haired boy. Never did you think Rafe would be the one thing you had left. That confused your heart especially when he leaned in for the first kiss.
But Rafe was patient with you. He handled every hesitation and every outburst like a gentleman so things began to ease up between you both.
"I just..." you sighed. "After I moved in with you and then leaving the island, I just never thought I would be back. It's a lot to take in. Then add Midsummer's into the mix."
Rafe let out a smooth chuckle. "Midsummer's is the best part. I get to show off the woman I've had the privilege of loving for the past year, dance with her, and maybe even kiss her?" He wiggled his eyebrows, driving you absolutely crazy.
"Midsummer's would be just as great if it was just us." You knew the root of the fear came down to seeing one person. JJ Maybank.
"I already took care of that. He's not allowed back. Not after last year. You weren't there in person, but your heart dropped when Rafe first told you about his encounter with your brother. Still you knew he wasn't telling you everything.
"Where is my sister, you asshole?" JJ seethed at the kook who was calmly relaxing at the bar.
"I'll have a glass of whiskey on the rocks." Rafe wasn't trying to cause a scene. As much as he wanted to beat the living daylights out of JJ, midsummers was definitely not the place and he promised you that he would be on his best behavior. "I see they promoted you from waiter?"
"You probably have her locked up somewhere. You're sick!" The blonde seethed.
"You left her on the beach for some slut, you told her she ruined everything. I don't think you understand the damaged you caused. She's still broken over it."
"Don't call my fiancé a slut." The words caused Rafe to still. That was new information. The kind he wouldn't be the one to tell the girl at home.
"You're unbelievable. You turned your back on your own sister."
"But she has you." His tone was clearly sarcastic. "She turned to you the second I was out of the picture." Jj held onto the hurt and anger from seeing the person he hated most comfort his sister. Sure she was a troubled mess, but he never expected that kind of betrayal.
"Sarah and I may not get along, but she's my sister. Even I wouldn't stoop so low. But then again your a pogue."
JJ's vision turned red as he began to ferociously swing. "Shut the fuck up."
Rafe was stronger, that much was obvious. It only took one hard push to send the maybank off him and to the ground. The elder hovered over him. "I'm not going to hit you, I made a promise and I intend to keep it, but I want you to listen closely." JJ laid on his back, unable to look away. "All she wanted was to do something nice for you and your shitty friends, but Shoupe took her to the station for some bullshit excuse of a crime. She put herself through hell just so you wouldn't be mad at her and disappoint her amazing brother by staying the night in a cell. Then you left her with Luke and she accepted whatever happened because you made her feel like she deserved it. If anyone is the fuck up, it's you. Even I wouldn't leave someone in the same room with your dad."
Rafe sucked in air, gaining some composure before continuing. "Never once has she spoken ill of you and it drives me crazy that she still cares for you. Your sister never wanted to leave outer banks but you made her feel unwanted and unwelcomed in her own home town. That's the kind of power you had over her. She would have killed herself for you if you'd asked. I have seen her grown and grieve. I have seen the hurt and anger she's held onto since she was just a child. I just don't understand how you could be so cruel to someone who loves you unconditionally."
JJ squirmed with discomfort. "Get off me."
"I'm not touching you." Physically that was. He knew his words pinned him in a corner. "Security." Rafe called after his monologue, leaving someone else to deal with the collateral.
JJ felt every calculated jab, knowing it was all his fault. He lived with pain every day. Sipped the same beer on the same couch his dad once did. 'High functioning' as he would call it, but everyone could see the distructive path he was taking. He was still in shock by the idea of his sister still loving him after what he did. No one would ever love him like that. No one should ever. It would cause them pain and heartache.
Rafe walked away satisfied, alerting JJ's work of the incident, resulting in termination. Part of Rafe felt a tinge of guilt, but after everything that happened, he knew you deserve more and JJ deserved to suffer.
"Do you think he's happy?" You sighed out. Last you heard, he was working at a mechanic shop and still dating Scarlet. You were shocked by how serious he seemed about her. Maybe his flings never lasted because of you. Now that you were gone, someone was able to fully love him. The pain settled in your chest, pressing against the bone in between. Nothing could stop the few tears that slipped out, not even when Rafe pulled over to wrap you in his arms.
"You're the kindest person I know and it hurts to see you get like this."
"I'm sorry. I don't mean to get like this."
Rafe cut you off. "There's nothing to be sorry for."
"It hurts to think it really meant nothing to him. I've reached out from time to time, but it's like talking to brick wall. I ruined him, didn't I?"
There was nothing Rafe could say to make you feel better and you hated making him feel helpless. It brought comfort to know he was there, but he would never understand where you were coming from. JJ had always been there. He took care of you when your mom left, or when Tommy Johnson broke your heart in 8th grade. He put up with you for so long and deep down you didn't want to believe he hated you, so you held on to the hope of reconciliation. That was if he wanted anything to do with you now.
"I love you, Rafe. I really do. And I want to make this a good trip back. I thought it wouldn't be as bad."
You could feel his smile lines move small sections of hair ever so slightly. "You have no idea how much I love you, sweetheart. If you want to leave the party early, I will be right behind you. Even if you wanted to come later, after the entrance, just know I'll be saving a dance for you."
You let a smile form. "Ain't no way I'm passing up playing kook for the evening." You both shared a few passionate kisses before driving off again.

You ran your hands down the front of the royal blue silk dress, the hem resting mid calf. "Can you help tie it again, Rafe?"
He slowly came up behind you in the locker room mirror and granted your wish. No words could describe his thoughts about that dress on you. More so, how it lightly wrapped around every beautiful curve he came to love. Slilently, the man wrapped his around your waist. "It's almost time for our entrance. You sure you want to do this?"
"You're being awarded something. That's important to you and I wouldn't miss it for the world." That was the truth. You would put aside the fear to be there for him, even if it meant death to the old self that everyone used to know.
After he pressed a kiss to the soft skin behind your ear, he began leading you to the patio. You blocked out the sound of the announcers as you scanned the patio for familiar faces. It seemed to be over in a messy blur.
Many came up to you, curious how the pair came to be. Rafe and you decided to stick to a story of him needing a roommate and then falling in love. It wasn't a lie, but no one else needed to know about the messy details.
"Omg!" Sarah squealed walking over as if nothing happened. "I didn't think Rafe was actually bringing you. It's been forever and you just disappear. I had no idea what happened." It was a bullshit lie. Sarah had heard first hand about it from JJ and now she was doing her undercover work for the pogues figuring out why you came back or why you dated Rafe. You saw right through the act.
"That's crazy." You spoke in a monotone cadence. You look up to Rafe as he wrapped an arm around you.
"Excuse me, Sarah. We're gonna head to grab some drinks and a small bite to eat. You and I can catch up later."
"What about-" she began to ask about but quickly got cut off from someone cutting in to ask for a dance. "Bye."
Your breaths became more shallow as the anxiety began to flood you. "She's going to tell JJ I'm here. What do I do?"
"Dance with me, that's what."
He had a cheesy grin on his face, knowing how smooth he sounded.
Rafe spend the whole night with you wrapped in his arms, introducing you to every big name on the island with ease. A few mentioned JJ, but Rafe's glance caused them to shut up quickly.
By the end of the last dance, you were exhausted. So in typical fashion, Rafe hoisted you on his back as he made his way to his truck. "Rafe you're bouncing me and it's upsetting my tummy." You drunkly whined,
"Sorry darling, I'm just wanting to get back to the hotel."
“Whatcha got in mind, solider boy?” You smirk, pressing your face into the crook of his neck.
“Might crank a little this and a little bit of that.” His fingers dig into your thighs, tickling ever so slightly. You squealed followed by several giggles until you felt your boyfriend freeze underneath you.
“Babe, what is it?” You vision seemed to be blurred by the amount of alcohol, but naturally felt the presences of someone else. You tried to focus your eyes on the other man standing near the car. “JJ.”
Rafe set your feet on the grab, but made sure to stand in front of you for protection. “You shouldn’t be here, JJ.” Rafe spoke up,
“I need to talk to my sister.” Your heart doubled over in pain. Sister. It’s been two years without a word and he left you on the beach. He hurt you so deep and for the longest time you only felt pain and sadness until the numbness kicked in. But all that anger burried deep below made its way up to the surface.
“What the fuck?” You step out of Rafe’s shadow. “What do you possibly have to say to me? It’s been two years. I’ve reached out several times.”
He let out a shaky breath. “I just wasn’t ready, you know.”
“But you’re ready now? When I’m finally happy.”
“You never told me you were coming back.” The tears quickly pooled in your eyes as everything around you started to transform into that day on the beach. The pain when he walked away, the hurt from being left to fend for yourself. Then you remember the way rafe came over and allowed you to hold on to him. So you did so once again, seeking comfort in his warm and in need of some fierce protection. You brain felt scrambled due to the alcohol.
“I just wasn’t ready, you know?” It was clear mockery of his previous statement.
“Sarah texted me that you were here and I just had to see it for me eyes, that you’re really with the kook king himself. You look like you went full kook.”
“Shut up. I wasn’t welcomed as a pogue, where else was I supposed to go.” He just shrugged. “I hated myself because of you.”
JJ looked completely dumbfounded, but built his defenses quickly. “Don’t blame your insecurities on me.”
“You better watch what you say pogue.” Rafe gripped you tighter as he whispered in your ear. “Just say whatever you need to say. I’ve got you, darling. Use your words.”
“JJ, you made me feel unwanted. I was not good enough for my own brother. Of course I hated myself. And you know what sucks? I still do. I spend every day second guessing my actions hoping I don’t ruin someone else.”
“I’m so-”
“Please don’t start, JJ. I’m not even close to saying what I need to. Leading up to coming back, I thought about visiting you and forgiving you, but I was so scared you’d turn me away. That maybe we could find being siblings again, but I decided you should be happy even if that’s without me.”
“You decided that without me and that’s not fair.”
“I’ve done the past two years without you and I’m starting a life of my own.”
His face looked completely defeated. “I want to be apart of it now. I was wrong and it wasn’t really true. In fact I went back for you but by that time Rafe was there and I just hid.”
“You left me with Rafe which is unbelievable. No offense Rafe. But the person who made your life hell.”
“Yea. He made my life hell and I was suprised how quick you turned to him. I thought you hated him, but look at you now.”
“I thought he was you at first and then I realized he was the only one their for me in that moment. I really didn’t have an other options. It was that or killing myself, because I couldn’t ruin anyone else if I was gone.” Rafe stilled. That was new information to him and that very thought broke his heart. “Sometimes I still feel that way and I stand in awe when I think how he loves me even with my mess.”
“You are my sister. My family.”
“Just because we have the same blood don’t mean we relate.” Your breathing grew heavier. “Rafe, I really just want to go. I don’t feel safe.”
He nodded then looked to JJ. “You’ve done enough damage for one night. I need you to step away from our car.”
JJ let a tear slip, completely shattering your heart. As you passed by him, you decided to speak one last time. “I love you, JJ. But I do not want you in my life at the moment. This isn’t me cutting you out for a better life, just setting boundaries so I can heal.”
With that, you hopped in, allowing Rafe to drive off. Once again? JJ was left alone, sobbing. His appology meant nothing this time. Sorry will never be enough.

JJ hung his head as Shoupe led you out. The officers hand lightly squeezing your neck. "Please don't touch me." You mumbled loud enough only for Shoupe to hear.
"I will do whatever I want and if you dare speak a word of what happened, I will haul your ass back here with out blinking an eye." His grip tightened. "It's not like you were actually worth it or anything."
Your shame quickly silenced any fight within. That and the disappointed look JJ had on his face. How would he react if he knew what you did to be let off the hook? The things that Shoupe did to you? Of course you wouldn't tell anyone. It was humiliating.
"Is she free to go?" JJ spoke through a tight lip smile, one that poorly attempted to hide his anger. You wouldn't use free to describe being relinquished into JJ's care. This is one of those moments that will live with you forever. Nothing will ever be the same.
"This wasn't the first time and it probably won't be the last." Tears brim your eyes at that thought. You were going to do everything in your power to stay as far away from the police station, never giving Shoupe a reason or opportunity to lay his hand on you once more. "I didn't want to bring her down here, but she needed to be taught a lesson or two. Vandalism is a very serious offense. Even if it's just with chalk."
"Thank you, Shoupe." JJ gripped your arm tightly and began dragging you to the parking lot. Not any care was given to the droplets spilling out.
"JJ, you're hurting my arm, please let go or at least losen your grip." He stopped, spinning around to face you.
"Am I hurting you, or are you just hurting yourself with your action?" You let out a scoff, not completely shocked by his outburst, by for the fact he is starting to sound like Luke. "Do you even think about your actions? We wouldn't even be here with you thinking I am hurting you if you would just keep your head down. I know it's in our blood to end up in jail, but I really thought you were different. Especially not this lamebrain you're turning out to be."
It was if your heart stopped, as you reached for the passenger side door of the lended Twinkie. "Just get in the back. I think better when I'm not clouded by negativity."
You breathed out a simple okay, not sure what else to do. There was no way to gage if the way JJ was treating you was fair or not. It was probably the fourth time in the past six months he had to pick you from the station for something that was your fault, but this time he didn't even ask what it was you were doing. If he would have, JJ would have learned about the art work you made for your friends on the park sidewalk. It's not like you knew it was illegal.
JJ also didn't know that Shoupe pulled you in his office, closed the blinds, and used you for his own pleasure. You would have screamed out for anyone to help, but the gun that laid in eye sight terrified you more than anything Shoupe could do. If he did shoot you, you would leave everything behind your friends and family, more importantly, JJ. Even if he was mad now, he was still your brother and you would go to the ends of the earth for him if he asks.
JJ parked the car in front of the house before quickly stopping the transmission. "I thought we were going to the chateau." Your bottom lip quivered.
"I am. You need to go to your room and think about where your life is going. I can't keep looking out for you. It isn't my job to keep you safe."
He was right. JJ couldn't keep you safe from everything, you learned that at the station earlier, and even if you can't explain it, you thought maybe he would be there for you. What a joke. "You can't ground me, JJ."
"If you want to leave that's your choice, but I just can't have you around me right now. I'm trying to do better." Heat engulfed your body as your heart crashed.
"I won't hold you back then." There was no good bye or see you later when you exited the car. Just the glare that told you 'you messed up.'
It would have been better to take the charges instead of going through the process of JJ picking you up. At worst, you would have spent up to the trial in some holding cell and then anywhere from a few days to a year in prison. JJ would have had time to sort through his thoughts and feelings before talking to you and your wouldn't have given yourself to Shoupe willingly to avoid charges on your record.
JJ is right, you were beyond stupid and maybe that's all you will ever be. So with your chin tilted upward, you placed cement around your heart and walked straight in through the front door not giving two shits if Luke was there or not because nothing really mattered anymore. You weren't good enough for your own brother's presence, therefore you'd fill your time with Luke. Bad attention is still attention. And maybe Luke isn't so terrible after all, maybe he is the only person to have his eyes wide open the whole time. He knew your worth from the start.
Now it was time for him to treat you accordingly. You grinned as he threw the first punch, feeling the blood rush from the gash on your cheek bone; laughed when the  second one collided on your collar bone; by the third, you were out and nothing seeming to bother you anymore.

It had been a week since JJ picked you up from the station, a week since Luke started beating the living shit out of you on a regular basis, and a week since you have even heard anything from JJ. He hasn't even tried to check in, so you decided to head to the chateau. It felt wrong, but you needed to know he was okay, you wanted to see his face. It brought you comfort when your mom left and when Luke would take his anger out on you. JJ made you feel safe so it was weird to go this long with out a word.
You decided to knock, unsure of what JJ said to the pogues about the situation. If JJ was mad at her, best bet was the rest of pogues were as well. Barging into John B's place felt wrong.
"Y/n." Sarah greeted, her voice filled with complete indifference. And somehow that made you feel a million times worse. You shift your gaze to the ground, scared to make eye contact. "JJ is out back on the hammock, but he might, uh, be busy." Basic translation of that meant he probably had a girl he was trying to sweet talk with him.
"I just need to seen him." With that you just walked away, not really caring for her permission or anything she had to say about the situation.
When she turned the last corner, her eyes fell upon JJ. His hands intertwined with some pretty brunette, clearly giggling about something that was said. Clearly the whole situation didn't affect him. "Babe?" The girl urged him to turn around. "Someone's here."
"I told you, John B-" His face froze, a deer caught in headlights.
"Do you know her?" The girl poorly whispered. "Please tell me you were already dating someone when you ask me to be yours." She sounded offended.
"No." He quickly answered to the last question. "That's y/n. She hangs out with us sometimes."
A knife to the gut. That's what this felt like. "I'm your sister, JJ." You tried to stand your ground instead of crawling into your shell. "I didn't mean to interrupt, just wanted to check in and make sure you were okay. It's been a week. I'll just leave now that I know you are." He was more than okay. He has the pogues, a place away from Luke, and supposedly a girlfriend that you had no idea about.
JJ couldn't speak, but the mystery girl beside him did. "I'm Scarlet. I didn't know he had a sister, but it's good to meet you. Are you okay? Did Luke do that?" Scarlet gestured to her own face to show what she was talking about.
You wanted to be polite, but the hurt was soon turning to anger. "Really, JJ? Am I really that much of a burden that I'm kept a secret? What makes me worse than dad, huh? She know about him, what about me?" It was never your intention to cause a scene but this was the ultimate betrayal.
Scarlet hopped up. "I'm gonna give you two a minute. I'm just gonna go inside with Sarah."
You managed to hold back the tears, doing your best to hide the numbing pain. The two of you walked down the beach until out of ear shot of the chateau. Family fights got ugly. You're voice softened. "Why?"
"I didn't want you to mess this up. You weren't around and how was I supposed to explain how my delinquent kid-sister just staying at the house because you're being stubborn."
"You dropped me off there and told you didn't want me around. What else was I supposed to do?"
"I don't know, but I really needed time apart to figure out things. I didn't think you'd stay. I thought maybe you'd come to the chateau later." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"Not even a text. I thought you were mad."
"I was. I mean I still am and that's why I have to do this." You looked at him very confused, your soft eyes now rigid with fear. "I can't be around you. For once in my life, things are finally going good and I am not worried if you are going to mess them up. I can think about myself for once and I'm free to do as I please." Your hands began to feel clammy as your chest tightened.
"What?"
"I've always looked out for you, never caring about myself or the trouble I get in because of you. I'm trying to do better and I am, but I can't surround myself with people holding me back. Maybe you'll get better, but until then."
Get better? As if it was some sort of disease that could be cured. There was no way to fix what was wrong inside you.
"JJ, please." You went to go hold him, needed to feel some form of love and affection, but he just shoved you away, accidentally propelling you into the sand.
"I have to go talk to scarlet and explain what happened. I hope I still have time to fix things. You should probably put some ice on your cheek."
That was the first caring thought he shared with you and it was the last thing he would probably for awhile as he left you in the sand, sobbing and begging for him to come back. Tears clouded your vision at this point.
After a few moments later, you felt a figure sit beside you with a huff. With out a second thought, you threw your arms around JJ. "I'm sorry, J. Please don't leave me."
"It's Rafe. Not JJ." You gather the back of his shirt in your fist, beginning to sob harder as he wrapped an arm around you. The other used to stabilize you both. "I saw the end of what happened and wanted to make sure you are okay." Although you hated Rafe Cameron before this moment, he was the only one there. The irony of the situation.
And once you caught your breath, you shared the events of the past week. Everything from the artwork of the pogues to Shoupe, from your father to JJ saying he doesn't want anything to do with you.
"Listen to me, y/n. Just because you mess up once or a thousand times, you are not a bad person. You were dealt a shitty hand and I'm sorry JJ is holding it against you, but I promise you I won't. If fact, I kind of understand where you're at."
You scoff. "How? You're a kook and have everything you need and then some."
"My dad kicked me out because I kept relapsing, made me feel like I was weak. I know it's not the same, but I want you to know it's going to be alright. We're gonna get through this."
In a moment of vulnerability, you look into his eyes. "Together?"
He nodded. "I have extra room at my new place. There will be food, warm water, air conditioning, because I know for a fact you pogues don't have air conditioning." For the first time in a while, you genuinely chuckled at his teasing. "You'll have a bed and a room all to yourself. The door locks. You just can't go home back to Luke.”
"Okay, roomie." Rafe pulled you towards him in a comforting embrace. This was him righting his wrongs, he was trying to be a better person.
"Let's go." He helped you up and began leading you to his car. Both of you oblivious to the teary eyes in the distance.
JJ sat behind a bush, sobbing over his loss. The rest of the group called him an idiot saying that he was the problem and he was the one pushing her away. He knew it, but pride got in the way. He didn't mean what he said, but by the time he came to take it all back, you were in Rafe's arms telling him everything you should have told him. It should have been him comforting you, but he ruined it all. Now you were waltzing away with Rafe Cameron.
He wasn't sure he could ever make it right. Sorry would never be enough.

Topper frowned as he opened up the apartment door. He had a long day at work and all he wanted was his girlfriend's arms around him and her angelic whispers reminding it's okay. He wanted to feel her skin against his. It always bought him the most comfort.
On any typical day, when Topper get home, y/n would be gracefully sitting couch, soaking in the sunlight as she completing her online schooling. But this was no typical day for either of them apparently.
"Babe?" He called out, first searching the kitchen, then making his way to the shared bedroom. "Babe?" She stirred in her sleep, wrapping her arms around the mass of pillows.

"Wait, why were you in bed instead of studying?" His concerned eyes caressed her face.
"I missed you." Y/n pressed her lips together. "Like really bad and I knew you'd be here when I woke up."
"God, we're so clingy." He let out a loud chuckle.
"I guess we are. Maybe that means I can come to work with you?"
"I think I can sneak you in on lunch break." Topper rolled off her, allowing the pair to lay on their side, facing one another. "I love you so much."
"And I love you a thousand more times than that."

"Maybe I should just stay here, yeah?" Y/n did her best to justify canceling plans with Rafe's family. "Yeah. Me, you, and Willow. Just like every other Saturday."
Rafe chuckled. "We spend every day together with Willow. This will be good for you to get to know Sarah and Rose." Y/n had Wheezie over several times for dinner or to watch Willow while the adults enjoyed a date night.
"I know, but what if something happens to Willow? Or you for that matter? You always find a way to get hurt."
"Only when I want your attention." She playfully hit his shoulder.
"I'm being serious, Rafe. We going to vineyard on the mainland. I won't be able to just check in whenever. I won't be back until late."
"We're going to be alright. Topper is already here and wheeze promises to check in. Not that I haven't watched Willow before, don't you trust me?"
She let out a hefty sigh. "I do. You know I do."
Rafe brushed the back of his knuckles up and down her jaw. "Then what is it? You were excited to hang out with Sarah. Is it Rose?"
"I just- I have never been this far from Willow and I'm not sure I want to be."
Rafe understood where she was coming from. He felt the same way when he had to leave for a business trip or something. It was different for him though because he didn't birth Willow and he hasn't had the privilege of knowing the beautiful young girl for half the amount of time y/n did, although in his mind, he loved her like she was his own. "I'm going to be very blunt. You're gonna have to get used to it. The things I have planned for our honeymoon don't even take place on this continent."
Tears brimmed the mothers eyes. "Willow isn't coming with us?" As quick as the tears fell, Rafe wiped them away.
"We can talk about it later." They have talked about a wedding briefly, but y/n seemed to keep putting it off by down playing the seriousness. Rafe understood how scary it could be and then bringing a kid into the mix, none of it would be a linear plan. "I didn't mean to upset you. This is just apart of life."
"Yeah I know. I'm just overwhelmed." Rafe helpped his girlfriend stand up.
"Let me help you get ready and then you can 'say see you later' to Willow."
"You know I love you and this has nothing to do with your family. I want to spend time with them." She spoke as they went to her room.
Rafe kept the door open as she gracefully sat down on the floor i front of the mirror. He grabbed her hair brush and began running it through the ends. "I know you do and I love that you are willing to give up your time to hangout with them when I am not there. That means the world to me."
Deep down, y/n knew Rafe was and is a family man. The way he deeply wanted to be apart of the Cameron household while still, in a sense, creating his own family bond with Willow and Y/n. It always left her in awe. Rafe chose them. Both of them. And he loved them beyond anything or anyone has ever loved them before.
When rafe was done brushing, he pulled her back into his chest, taking in her sweet, vanilla and strawberry  aroma. His eyes stared at hers through the mirror, both sharing the loving smile. "I am so in love with you. You are my love, my life, and my everything."
Y/n's smirk grew. "I know."
He began planting a thousand kisses on her face, pinning her ever so carefully to the ground. "Do you? Do you really?"
"Yes because I love you ten more times than that." He was so in love with y/n and it scared him, but it began the best feeling known to human kind. It was more addicting than any drug he could ever think of.
Rafe slowly allowed his body weight to press onto hers as she pulled him closer. He connected his lips to hers in a moment of passion.  He wanted her to know just how much she meant to him and how much better his life was because of her.
"I love you, but I need to get ready." She smiled from beneath him.
He gave her one last longing kiss then hopped off her. "I love Willow,  but I love when she's with Topper so we can have moments like this."
"Me too." She started to grab her clothes and head to the bathroom to change. Y/n hadn't let Rafe see her in that way yet and probably wouldn't until she was married. She knew first hand the possible consequences of sex and the silent but powerful bond it could build. She loved him but was beyond scared.
When she came out, Rafe attached his arms around her once more. His girlfriend wore an off white cropped turtle neck, a fall colored plaid shacket, and pair of jeans with holes in the knees. "Are you doing a lot of make up?"
"Just some mascara and tinted moisturizer. Why?"
"You look pretty like this and I have more time with you if you don't."
"I think Willow and Topper are in the play room." The pair when to join the others who were deeply invested in the book, A bad case of the stripes.
Rafe sat down examining the playroom. In reality, this was the master bed room, but y/n claimed it was too big for Willow and she, herself, had no need for the space. Rafe had previously talked with topper in helping put together a room for her while she was out today. He had to get Sarah and Rose in on it to keep her busy.
He wasn't going to do much except get a her a larger bed, better storage, some more personalization, and a few extra gifts. Rafe wanted her to be treated like the beautiful person she is and to allow herself to be put first for once.
"Top, did you ever catched stripes?" Willow shifted in lap to look at him. It was clear to all the adults in the room that the young child had an infatuation with Topper. It was sweet the way Topper just allowed it. Willow had managed to wrap the island's top two toughest guys around her small finger.
"Oh, many times. But it didn't happen with just Lima beans. You have to eat all your vegetables."
"For you, I will." She grinned. "That's what mommy says to Rafe when he tells her to do something,"
"Mommy is a SIMP." Topper kissed the child on the forehead then looked up to the adults.
"She's my SIMP." Rafe wrapped an arm around y/n as they sat on the ground. "Willow, mommy has to go. Can you come bye bye?"
The child slipped off and ran to her mother. "Mommy can I come with you?"
"I wish, but you're gonna hang out with Rafe and Topper all day. I'll be here when you wake up." The young mother's voice was soft with a hint of sadness, but she knew her daughter was in the best hands possible.
"I'm going to miss you, but we'll have fun." She hugged her mom as tight as possible. Willow's biggest fear was that her mom would leave her. Her mom was all she had. Sure Rafe was there and now Topper as well, but her mom has never not been there. "Please come back.
Y/n gave Willow one last kiss on the cheek then pressed her lips to Rafe's. "I love you both. And you too Topper."
"No mommy." Willow cried out. "I love him."
"You can have him." With that Willow went yo Topper to read once more while Rafe walked her to the car waiting in her.
"I'll see you tonight." Rafe gave her another longing kiss. "But call me whenever you need, even if it's just because you miss me because just know I'll be missing you a million times that much."
"I don't know what I did to ever deserve someone like you."
"I know." Rafe's blue eyes sparkled down at her as she stared back with questions. "You gave me a chance to hang out with you and Willow instead of work. That's exactly what I needed."
A honking noise snapped their attention to the car. An impatient Rose and Sarah sat in the front. Y/n began to run off as Rafe mouthed an "I love you." She returned the gesture and got in the car.

Rafe was sliding in the mattress as Willow clung to his leg, giggling at the man's struggle. "You're strong, Rafe."
"Why thank you, princess." He loved having her company while he was setting up y/n's new room with Topper and a few others, but they were grabbing food. There was no way Rafe would let anyone drive off with his little girl. "Do you mind holding the door for me sweetheart?"
Willow unlatched herself and stood by the door. It was already opened, but Rafe knew she wanted help so he created mini tasks for her to complete. Earlier he had the child count how many steps it was from the front door to her room. Poor girl kept losing count after twenty, but she was so happy.
"Why are we wrecking my playroom?" She questioned as he passed by.
"You see, baby. This is called the master bedroom and it's for the people who own the house."
"Mommy owns this house."
"Very smart girl. So I think mommy should get the biggest room." He smiled.
A small frown appeared on her lips. "Yea, but where will my toys go?"
"For right now, they can stay in your room and then we'll move them to mommy's old room."
"I guess that's okay." She ran over to Rafe as he set down the mattresses in front of the frame.
Rafe scooped her into his arms while simultaneously pulling out his phone to play some music. "You wanna dance, baby girl. I want to dance." He began spinning her around, humming lines of the country song playing. But nothing compared to the sound of her laughter bouncing off the walls.
"Sing, Rafe! Sing to me." The child begged. Anything she asked, he would do.
"Now until the day I die, unconditionally, you know I'm always gonna be here for ya." Willow rested her head on his chest listening to the low vibrations of his voice then joined in the familiar song. "No one's ever gonna love you more than God, your mama, and me."
Rafe knew she was probably too young to fully understand the lyrics, but some day he hopes she will and when that happens, she'll remember him singing it and how much he meant it.
"This is a sight I don't think I will ever get used to." Topper interrupted the moment, but Willow was already slowly drifting off to sleep.
"It's almost been six months, Topper and I just want to been in Willow and Y/n's life forever."
"I get it man. They are some of the coolest, most real people I've met. You're lucky to have them." Topper spoke softly as Rafe bounced Willow on his hip.
"You have no idea. I never thought I would ever be in love. At least not like this. I believed it was going to be one that my dad and rose set up, you know? A "love" for appearance, to save the family name, one that a pogue only dreams of. But Topper, it's really out there. I just had to look past myself and my work. And I cannot begin to tell you how beautiful it is."
"It's almost sickening how much of a SIMP you've become, but you deserve it. After everything you've been through." Topper referenced his senior year of college where he went through an intense rehab program and rebuilding everything from there. In a few words, he was zero fun.
"Thank you, Top."
"Food is here. The help are in the kitchen. Do you want me to put her down?"
"I want to hold her a little longer. But you have to stop calling them the help even if they are here to help. You are talking about my sister's boyfriend." Rafe knew topper was playing around, but deep down he was holding an old grudge.
"Ya, my ex girlfriend's new boy. And I sat in the car with him and his pogue friends."
"And you're still alive, aren't you?"
"You know, you're starting to sound like y/n. 'Be friends with everyone,' god, even your sense of humor."
"I hope so. She's so wonderful and a genuine person. I'm glad it's rubbing off on me" Rafe's face just lit up. "I'm going to call my girl. We have to put the mattress and bedding on, then move in her clothes and belongings. If they want to leave they can."
"Can I?"
"Do you have somewhere to?" Rafe questioned, already knowing he had no other plans and promised Willow he would stay til her mom came back, or at least when Willow was for sure asleep.
"No, just wanted to see if you'd losen my leash." They both chuckled, throwing their head back.
"Get out of here before I choke you with it." And he did. Leave that is.

Y/n, Sarah, and Rose all stood at the tasting bar, listening to the owner rant about where his wines come from and what not. "I really like this one. It's not too sweet." Rose commented, clearing having a higher tolerance to the alcohol along with Sarah.
As for the young mom, drinking was not a regularity. In fact, she's barely had a sip of anything remotely close since Willow came along. She was way past tipsy. As each glass was downed, she grew more intoxicated.
"I agree. It's one of my favorites. What do you think, y/n?"
Y/n giggled in response. "I think you guys got me drunk and I-" she was slurring her words. "I don't remember what I was gonna say, but I'm getting a phone call. Excuse me."
She smiled as she stepped away. "Helloooo, Rafe."
His chuckle rang loudly through the phone. "Are you drunk, Sweetheart?"
"You know, I was just telling Sarah and Rose the same thing." Rafe could here her attempting to hide it, but nothing would. He loved hearing her like this. It was a first for him. Neither of the duo really drank in the other's presence, not to this extent.
"Are you at least having a good time?"
"I wish you were here. I really miss you but Sarah kept laughing at me when I wanted to call you. But I love you and I wish you were here. How's Willow?"
"We danced for a bit and she fell asleep in my arms." Y/n imagined the picture in her mind, swooning at the thought. "She's the second best thing that has ever happened to me."
"And the first?" She teased, knowing his next few. They have had this conversation a thousand times.
"You. You will always be the best thing that happened to me." Y/n stayed quiet, simply enjoying the sound of his breathing. "When are you coming back home?"
"We're gonna wrap up here and then hit some wine painting thing. Rose is dying to see what I can do."
Rafe's eyebrows knitted together. "You want to paint again?" She always talked about painting as if it was a thing of the past. Charles Rousseau ruined her dreams. At least that's how Rafe saw it. But maybe she still had a form a hope left.
"I miss it, you know. It was all I wanted to do at one point."
"Well then, baby, I don't think there is any harm in trying it again. Paint me something, will you? My assistant told me I should add some color to my wall at the office."
"Oh, Rafe. That's funny because I am your assistant." He never laughed so hard in his life except when he is with her.
"You're so drunk. I need you to be careful though because I love you and Willow loves you too."
"I will be so safe because I like when your at my house waiting for me. It makes me feel special."
God, Rafe was so in love with her. And she was in love with him equally as much. "We are the definition of simp and it's disgustingly cute."
"Rose and Sarah are giving me the evil I. So I need to um, hang up." Her voice got whiny, signally she was upset. "But I can't. Can you hang up on me?"
He sighed. "I don't want to, but I can. I love you and see you tonight."
"I love you most." With that he hung up.
Sarah rushed over after noticing some tears. "What's wrong?" Genuine concern filled her voice.
"I told him to hang up on me." She tried to steady her breathing. "And he did."
Sarah allowed the girl to hang around her neck. "We're gonna go paint and then I have a few bottles for the ferry ride. Then poof you'll see Rafe."
"You're right. Poof and then I'll see Rafe." A smile grew on both their faces.
"You really need to build your tolerance up when it comes to drinking. You'll never survive a kook event sober."
"I survived Wheezie's birthday without a drop." She took a breath before laughing even harder. "I did sit on the patio and cry after."
"Oh my god, you did not?"
"Yes. Anyways, let's go painting. I've cried enough tears in front of Rose today, she's totally gonna tell Rafe I'm not cool."
Sarah hugged her tighter as they walked. "And when has Rafe ever listened to what Rosa has said? He loves you, plus Rose thinks highly of you. This is just an initiation type thing."
"You're like my best friend, Sarah. I only talk you, Rafe, wheeze, and topper. Sometimes Kelce, but that's it."
"And you are mine. Now for real, let's go." Sarah began dragging the girl to the car, Rose chuckling  behind them.

Y/n clutched the canvas in her fist as she stumbled to the front door. It was a little after eight by the time the ferry reached the groups final destination.
"Rafe?" She whispered loudly as she opened the front door. "Babe?"
He was lightly asleep on the couch, clearly trying to wait for her. The girl ploppped on the ground in front of him, placing his hand on her head. "Please wake up. I want to talk to you." She could clearly see he was stirring at the sound of her voice. "I missed you."
"Hello gorgeous." He sleepily grinned. "You're back."
"Yea. I wanted to see you." Rafe could still hear the drunken tone in her voice. "I want to talk to you."
"I'm all ears, baby cakes. Come here." He opened his arms creating space for her to crawl into. "I want to hear all about your time."
The girl held out the painting in front of them, her back pressed to his chest. "I made it just for you."
Rafe noticed the intention of every brush stroke. It looked like it belonged in some museum, even if it was a half assed rough draft. Anything she did was priceless to him. "It's a beautiful heart."
"It's my heart. I want you to have it." Rafe removed his eyes from the artwork to his girl. "You can do whatever you want with it because no matter what, it's yours."
"I'm going to keep it forever."
"You mean that Rafe?" Her eyes were wide as he nodded. "Beacause you're it for me. You will always have my heart. Even if this love was to go down in flames, it will still be in your hands."
"Baby-" he started, but was quickly cut off.
"Let me finish. I have a point to all this." He leaned back, letting her control th conversation. "I don't want anyone else. I can't even begin to think about introducing Willow to someone new like that. It will only be you. I love you and I want to spend forever with you. Can we do that?"
Rafe chuckled. "Sounds like your proposing."
"Fuck it. Raphael Xavier Cameron, will you marry me? For worse of for better?"
Tears brimmed his eyes. "Really?"
"Yes. You promised me someday, so why can't that be today? I want to the whole thing with you. The wedding, the moving in, the doing life. I want to do that with you and Willow. And I know you're probably  thinking 'she's just drunk' but I've been thinking about this for a while and I never want to be far from you again. I want to know that you will always be here when I come home or at least you'll be coming home to me. I love you. So I'll ask again, will you marry me, Rafe?"
"Yes. I'll marry you." Rafe felt pure joy as he pulled her into him to kiss her. It was a long, deep, and passionate kiss. In a different setting it would lead to something more physical. Instead, the kiss sealed a promise. "I love you so much. I almost forgot, I have a suprise for you." He lightly shoved her up and stood with her.
"While you were gone, we did a little project. Topper, Willow, the pogues, and I."
"You had the pogues over?" She said more suprised than upset she is just now hearing about it.
"Yea, but that's not the point. I want you to know how special you are to me and you deserve everything in the world, so..." he opened up the door to the master bedroom, revealing a much more sophisticated version of her old room. "I know how much you loved your plants and I didn't want to change it up too much. Just a new bed and some more storage. I also stocked up the master bedroom for you. No more sharing."
Tears began trickling down her face. "Rafe you shouldn't have."
"Shouldn't have what? Spoil my fiancé, giving her everything she deserves and more? Taking care of her and her daughter and their needs? I think I should have."
"Fiancé?" Toppers voice pulled them out of the moment and they notice him in a chair, Willow sound asleep in his lap.
"Y/n proposed like five minutes ago. We're going to get married."
Topper stood up. "I'm gonna put her down and leave you guys to do what ever it is you choose." They smiled and allowed him to leave.
"Let me get dressed and then do you want to stay the night?" Her voice was soft. It was the first time she ever asked something like this. Sure, he's stayed late or came at the wee hours of the morning, but he never wanted to overstep her boundaries.
"Of course, my dear." So he waiting on the foot of his bed, a big grin on his face as he texted Sarah about the news.
When y/n came back, she pulled him up to her chest, running her fingers through his hair. "I love you so much, Rafe. You are perfect for me. More so, you are perfect for Willow. It's like life was a puzzle and you were the missing piece."
"You know what I'm thinking?" He smiled, looking up at her. "I really want to be Willow's dad. Like officially and on paper. If it's okay with you and we can sit down with Willow and talk to her and see her input, but yea. That's what I'm thinking."
"Yes. I think that's perfect." She shimmied down so she was face to face with rafe. His arms gently secured around her waist. "I'm really exhausted and just want to sleep in my fiancé's presence. We can talk more about it in the morning. Sound good?"
"Here's to someday." He kissed her.
"Here's to making it today."

It had been simultaneously the best and worst three months of y/n's life. The way her heart flutter at JJ's admission of feeling was a perfect contrast to the sound of the organ crashing on the floor to small shards.
JJ stared her down, forcing a silence upon her. "You're so needy, all the goddamn time. Give me a fucking break."
"I haven't heard from you in three days, let alone, seen you in week. I don't know what's going on." The distance was painful, but not uncommon. It just had never gotten to this point. "A text would have been nice."
"You wanted a fucking text, sucks because I needed space." He ran a hand through his blonde mop head before pinning her between his arms, a hand on either side of her. The same arms she once sought comfort in now instill a deep rooted fear. There was no escape. "I needed time away from your clingy ass."
Y/n regretted even coming to the chateau today. If it was any other time, she would have busied herself on figure eight, hanging out with Topper, Kelce, and Rafe. Unfortunately, they had some sporting event on the mainland, but opted for a get together later that night.
"Do you know how you make me feel?" His voice filled with the same rage of his father's, at least from what he's told her about the man. "Answer me."
"Maybe if you would tell me-"
"You make me furious. Thinking it's some fun game to kick it with the pogues-"
Y/n pleaded. "No, I don't."
"You suffocate me." In a moment of temptation, she glanced at his lips, confused how they once flooded words sweeter than honey, now we're sharper than daggers. They were still beautiful. "You want me still, don't you?"
The girl attempted to seal her eyes shut, but his change of demeanor and soft words brought her out of the darkness, once again staring in the dark icy blue eyes. "Please look at me, pudding."
"JJ-" she began, wanting to talk about what just happened, but he shushed her.
"I just need time to think about us." He pulled y/n up by the arms and led her to the bedroom. He was always the one to fight her emotions with sex. What once was beautiful seemed vile. Only for his pleasure.
She laid complacent on the mattress as he trailed kisses down her skimpily clad chest. It wasn't long before he was inside her, claiming her as another conquest. She didn't mind though, it felt so nice to be loved.
JJ turned his back to her and tucked himself underneath the covers, leaving her to clean up the mess that he made. It's been too long since he actually cared for her needs and feelings. She let the despair flood her body. "I think we should break up." He mumbled.
"What?" Everything stopped.
"I mean, I don't know why I stayed this long. I wouldn't even had looked you way if it weren't for your..." he paused to think, "bedroom abilities."
Y/n repeated her whimper. "What?"
"I mean the island talks. You have a nice body. If anyone says otherwise they are lying. Only good for sex, you know? Otherwise you're so miserable to be with."
"Oh."  She held her tears back the best she could.
"Don't take it personal, pudding."He didn't even care, just scrolling through his phone as if it was another typical afternoon, as if he didn't just rip her heart out, leaving her to choke on her suppressed sobs. "I'm gonna go, I guess."
She slowly put on her clothes, hoping he'd tell her it was a mistake. "Can you hurry up? I have a hot touron on her way. I don't want to have to explain the inconvenience."
Another girl? Already? He truly didn't care and clearly doesn't know anything about discretion.
She wanted to turn around and scream at him. Tell him he's acting the same way as his father. That he should remember his father treated his mother the same way and that's why she left. But y/n didn't have the heart. The boy was still hurting over his mother's absence, the abuse endured by his father, she didn't want to be added to that list. Instead she silently left, ignoring the glances from pogues.
Y/n continued to wander home, completely numb to the feelings and the elements, when she received a text. Some part of her it was John B or Kie checking in on her after hearing the events but it was just topper. She felt crushed.
Topper: we're ordering take out, send your order so it's here when you arrive.
She quickly went into the group chat to let them know tonight is not a good night to hang out.
Y/n: JJ and I just broke up. I need sometime by myself to think about and process it. I love you all and I'm sorry to bail.
They all sent their understanding and making plans to go 'beat the living daylights out of him.' She of course said no.
The girl sent a quick message to Rafe privately. They had practically been raised together resulting in a firmly rooted bond.
Y/n: could you come over tomorrow? I don't want to be alone.
Rafe: Anything for you. It's going to be okay. I love you.
Love. She stared at the word, questioning the underlying meaning. 'He probably just thought saying it would make her feel better, or flatter her ego. Yea. Rafe only stayed friends with her because y/n was a good piece of arm candy.' Or so she convinced herself.
It's funny. She used to stand in front of the mirror and pick apart the things she hated about herself. But clearly she must have not seen what everyone else saw because clearly the whole island thought she was beyond pretty enough and that was all she was worth. The tears that once spilled for JJ, are now for her beauty she wished not to have. What a twisted thing it was, to pray to be ugly and truly seen, then only beautiful. She was just that. Only beautiful.

Rafe was never too far from y/n. He never thought it was right to leave her, not like this at least.
It had been a little over a month and she barely left her house, apart from school. The things that once interested her now seemed like a nuisance. She never wanted to dress nice, always in sweats or what she deemed as 'lazy day apparel.'
"You need to stop moping around." He gently urged her to get up for a Saturday with her friends. "You deserve more than what he did to you."
"Shut up, Rafe. I know my worth, okay? It hurt but I'm getting over it." He didn't know why they broke up or the things JJ said to her. Just that it hurt. That's all she ever told him.
The man never got used to the quick burst of angers, it was so uncharacteristic to her calm nature. "I'm just saying, Topper and Kelce miss you very much." She's only allowed them to come over a few times, Rafe was their only connection to what was going on. "They don't even care to do much."
"So they can just look at me? Appreciate the sight."
"Where is this hatred coming from, y/n? They want your friendship and  company. Watch a movie or something." He worried for her, only wanting to take care of her and bring back the sweet girl she once was.
"Let's just drop it. Can you leave so I can go change?"
"You know I don't mind. I'll just turn around like always."
"I said get out." He barely made it through the door way when she slammed it shut.
Her heart raced. There would be no way she would even give anyone the opportunity to look at her body.
Y/n quickly grabbed a large hoodie that happened to be JJ's old school one. It no longer smelt like him, but it still brought up memories, good and bad. She shrugged it on, allowing to fall close to her knees. It was one of the few things that hid her figure. No one can love her for her body if they could not see it. At least that was the goal.
Rafe offered a gentle smile as she exited the room only to greeted with a glare. She perplexed it to the point it began wearing his heart thin. Bit by bit it was breaking, but that was his fault for falling for his best friend all those years ago.
"Are we walking?" She grumbled.
"Yes." And they continued their short journey in silence. This allowed Rafe to simply think.
At a young age, Rafe knew his friendship with y/n was special. Even when they fought or grew fussy of each other, they'd find a way back to one another.
He must have been eight or nine by the time he developed that crush on her. They played house. She was the mommy and Rafe willingly took the roll of father. "Mommy and Daddy's kiss, you know?" He wanted it to be true for the sake of his fantasy. What if they got to be mommy and daddy's for real? Rafe knew he had to wait.
As he got older, the pair stuck together. They were each other's first kiss. For Rafe it was a dream come true but for y/n it was "weird" and "best friends don't do that." So he waited. He listened to every story about the guy she thought was cute. He watched as JJ slowly crushed her heart then completely destroyed it.
Now he watches her destroy herself and it the end that killed him.
"Rafe are you listening?" Topper questioned?
"Sorry, I was just thinking." He glanced at y/n. She had a grin on her face while hugging a large bottle of some expensive moscato.
"You're always thinking too much."She rolled her eyes. "Whatever it is, just push it to the side."
"I can't push you to the side. Love ya too much." He only half teased.
She put on a façade of security as she passed the alcohol. "Well don't. Just take a sip and forget it ever happened."
As time went on, the group was too far past drunk. Kelce and Topper were in there own little world. Rafe and y/n sat awkwardly in another. It was like sitting in a room across from a person who you no longer knew. Just the memories. "Rafe, why do you stick around?" He stared at her. "I mean with me?"
"After almost ten years of friendship, you ask that? Have I not been here long enough for you to trust me?" He chuckled, trying to masquerade the hurt.
"It's not that." She quickly slurred out. "I am just self aware that I can be annoying or clingy. Even needy. You haven't done anything except wait on me. Why?"
"I hope one day, when you are ready, you'll let me take you out to dinner and tell you about it." It was the honest to god truth.
"You're doing it for a dinner?"
"And because you're my bestest friend in the whole wide world." She leaned into him, wrapping her arms around his structured rib cage.
"I'm sorry for being a bitch. I'll try and do better."
Rafe glided a hand on the back of her head. "One day at a time, Pickle."
She scrunched her nose with a shit eating grin. "It's been a minute since you called me that."

It's been one week since that drunken evening. Y/n finally agreed to a dinner. He said that's the reason he was sticking around, so she would give him just that, and it would be over.
"Wear something pretty." Rafe whispered in her ear earlier that day and for some reason that made the girl feel even worse. He wanted her to look nice so he could show her off for every single person on the island. She was just for show like all the trophy girl friend's on figure eight.
She wouldn't dress to impress. It's Rafe and it was just dinner. Typical night at the wreck. It wouldn't be the first time they ate without Topper and Kelce.
A decision was made; grey sweatpants with a black crew neck. That will do. She didn't have the energy for anything else really. Her brain focused on other things.
Rafe stood at the door, fixing his tie with his free hand. The other was filled with a bouquet of flowers that he had personally chosen and arranged. His hair was lightly gelled, split perfectly down the middle and pushed to the sides.
No one would understand the strings he had to pull to get a reservation at this restaurant. Technically it was not open to the public yet, just the upper class who knew someone.
Even though the reservation was nearly two hours later, he wanted to spend time talking and walking along the beach. He was excited and eager when he knocked.
His heart dropped when he looked at her. "You're not even dressed yet?" He tried to hide the disappointment. Was she not as excited at he?
"It's just dinner." She did everything to hide the shock that her was in a full suit and fist full of flowers. "The wreck isn't anything new."
"I was going to surprise you with Luigi's. That new place." Frustration was rising. "I said dress nice."
Her heart begged her to apologize, to run upstairs and change, but her brain was self destructing. She would never let someone use her. Friend or foe. It will never matter. "I don't care for a fancy restaurant, i thought we'd be hanging out like usual."
She noticed the way his jaw clenched. Y/n knew he was holding back his anger. "There's still time to change."
"But I'm comfortable as is."
Rafe threw his hands up, dropping the flowers. "I'm such a fool." He muttered. "God. I thought you would finally see how much I really love you. Beyond a friend. That this was a turning point for us. All I wanted was to give you an excuse to dress up. Have a nice dinner. Feel special. And maybe we could talk." He started to walk away and she stared at the flowers. "Couldn't even do that!"
Her heart felt like it was breaking all over again, except she wouldn't have rafe there for her. Even if he only loved her body, like everyone else, she couldn't even pretend it was real and she most likely would never feel it again if he walked away. "Why do you want me to dress up so badly? Huh? So you can show everyone that you can pull a hot girl? Or that you have to islands most wanted fuck?"
"Because I love you." He screamed back. His red face showed exasperation.
"You love how I look. You're just confused." She scoffed.
"You're beautiful, sure the island wants you, but I knew you before you got in shape and grew boobs, or learned to do makeup." He sighed then took a step forward. "Where would you ever get that idea?"
He took a glance over her features, noticing the guarded features hinted with fear. " If anyone says the want me for anything other than my body, they are lying. I am I nly good for sex. Otherwise I am so miserable to be with." Her voice stayed calm as if she repeated them a thousand times, building her defense with every syllable.
"Who told you that bull shit? Since when does the y/n care what other people think?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Yes it does. Because they made you feel so terrible, you can't even be yourself around me. Your best friend."
"Well, JJ was my boyfriend and that made no different." Rafe tan to her. Rescuing her collapsing body as she wept.
"Three months compared to the ten years I knew you were made for me. I sat by you through everything. I'm sorry if I never made it known to you very well."
She tried to lightly push him off. "You don't mean it."
"I've waited and I will continue to wait."
"I ruined everything, Rafe. I hate myself. I'm not sure I can fully trust you. It's not your fault but,"
"You've been hurt, it takes time. Even after all this, I still love you for you." She stilled in his arms. "I'm giving you time."
"Enough time to dress and make it to dinner?" He glanced at his watch. "Good thing we still have an hour."
"I'll try to trust you."
"Good." Helped her up and back inside. "Have I told you how sweet and beautiful your mind and soul are?"
"Never."
"Well I just did and I will tell you till time runs out."

Nervous butterflies settled in her stomach as she presented herself in her fathers office. Her mother placed right by her side with a furiously disgusted look plastered on her face.
"Is this important?" The older man rolled his eyes. "I'm trying to finish some work."
"You know what our daughter just told me?" The tears pooled in the young girls eyes. She wished she never spoke up and confided in her mother. "Tell him."
"It's okay, really. I don't have to. It was a mistake." She pleaded for it all to stop.
"Now!" Her mothers fingers dug into the girl's wrist.
There was no point to fight it. Not to mention, the way her father's eyes glance with contempt at the emotion of both females. "I'm bi."
He slammed down he papers with enough force to cause an earthquake. "No you are not."
More frustrated tears fell from her soft eyes. "What do you mean?"
"You're just confused. Bi isn't a real thing, sweetheart."
"Dad-" the girl started but was cut off.
"No daughter of mine would even think about a woman that way. When you start acting like someone in this family, then maybe you'll have the right to call me father." She let out a strangled sob, knowing that would be the end of it.
"Yes sir." With that, she left, sobbing in self hatred and pity. She kept questioning what she was made like this? Shame consumed her.
Now, a week later, Y/n stood next to her family as they entered the venue. A sea of tipsy adults and heavily intoxicated teens filled the back patio. "At least try to fit in, honey." She rolled her eyes.
"Yes sir." She hung her head, fiddling with her dress. It was dusty blue with a hanging neckline that wrapped around the chest, a simple tie securing it around her wait. Her mom made fuss about the simplicity of it, but y/n tried not to take it to heart because anything she did upset her parents and siblings. Not that they understood why. Her two brothers were too young to understand, but old enough to know what their parents said was holy grail.
"Rafe is over there." He pointed. "I want you to go and please him well for whatever he wants. I need his father's and family's support."
She was shocked at his words, complied and went to go tap on his shoulder. They had been friends for a few years, hooked up on a few occasions, but that were no strings attached and they remained friends. Not close, but enough she was comfortable to talk about the struggle of kook expirations with him.
"Hey, y/n!" He spun around from the table and smiled. "Here to fulfil Kook duties?"
"Why else." They chuckled, as he lead her to the dance floor.
The two swayed in a peaceful silence. His hands settled on her waist while hers wrapped around his neck. "You're too pretty to have that look on your face."
"What look?"
"You just seem more quite and kind of upset. Did your father say something?" Rafe understood how hurtful a fathers words could hurt and that typically was the cause with her in the past.
"For starters. He told me to please you well for whatever you need." Rafe snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her to a less crowded spot.
"Did I give him some idea that's what I wanted?" He was confused why her dad would say something like that.
"He wants to close the deal." Rafe noticed the shame in her eyes. This wouldn't be the first time her father said something like this and most times they would laugh it off. But she seemed even more closed off.
"Deal or not, you always please me exceptionally well. But you're not doing okay, are you? He always had a sixth sense when it came to her feelings, something about her reminded him of himself.
"I'm okay."
"The tears threatening to spill are telling me otherwise." And a few did fall as she rested her cheek to his chest. "You can talk to me. I won't judge you for anything you do or say."
Y/n already faced rejection from her parents, outed by her own mother, she didn't want to lose anyone else. As if it wasn't hard enough to come to terms with opening her mind to the possibility of being attracted to the same sex in the society where marriage was between a man and woman, she felt like it was time to tell her family. But she realized how that went. What could Rafe say or do that was worse than losing a real relationship with her family. "They are so disappointed in who I am."
"We're not here to please everyone. Kooks have this expiration to be perfect and we can't be." She knew he was talking about the summer he was high on whatever he could get his hands on. "You can't choose your family, but you can choose your friends, the ones who will truly love you for you."
He always knew what to say to bring y/n back to earth. Telling him wouldn't be the worst thing and she trusted him. "I don't know why I am telling you this. Maybe you slipped something in my drink or something," she slowly spoke, looking up into his eyes. "I like guys and girls."
His blue orbs lit up and he spun her around. "I'm so glad you were comfortable to tell me. I don't understand first hand how hard that is, but I can only imagine." His arms tightened around her. "You know what this means?"
"What?" Y/n's mood completely shifted at Rafe's response. He seemed genuinely pleased.
"We, uh, could still seal the deal." The relentless but fun teasing began.
"I need time to figure out what it all means for me and what I want. Ya feel?" Rafe was happy that she told him, truly he was, but he wasn't even sure where to begin on how to comfort her.
"I'm glad you aren't shoving it down. I'm here if you need to talk or anything. But have you talked to Kiara Carrera?"
"You're the first person I've told since my parents. In fact the barely let me leave my room. Plus I don't know her personally."
"Would it be okay if I introduced you guys? She went through the whole coming out ordeal right before you moved here. I think it would be good to talk to someone who understands." Panic and worry we're clearly evident on her face. "I won't tell her anything you told me. I want that to be your choice."
She was thankful for his kindness. All of it was kind of out of character for the usually grade-A douche of a boy, but she always got to see a different side of him. "I'd like that very much. But I think my dad is summoning me over. Later?"
He released the girl and smiled. "Later. Also you can tell your dad, I'll put a good word in for your family deal. His daughter made me very happy." Rafe kissed her cheek and went on his way to mingle.
As the night went on, y/n's spent her time talking to friends or people her father deemed important. "Excuse me, mind if I steal, y/n again?" Rafe cut in to her fathers conversation.
"You don't even have to bring her back. Get her off my hands, please." Anyone viewing would take it as a joke, but Rafe knew the previous events and took it as anything but a joke. He even saw the brutal pain flash in y/n's eyes.
"You okay?"
"I used to be so close with my whole family and now I'm a problem. I'll get used to it." She shrugged. "Just sucks."
"We'll get through it together." A sheepish grin grew. "Now that we're bffs and all."
"So where are we going?"
"The pogues are having a little bon fire and anything is better than here." The pair continued walking to his car. "Not too far."

Y/n stood next to Rafe as he made awkward introductions. Everyone seemed to stare her down, but she was kook and hanging with Rafe. It was a rough start but things eased up eventually.
The fire continued to burn, warming everyone along with their invisible liquor coat. Y/n sat on a log with Kie, listening about the whirl pool of trash circling in the ocean. It was a good distraction from what weighed heavily on her mind.
The new girl kindly interrupted Kie. "Can I ask you a kind of personal question?"
"Of course. You looked like you had something on your mind." Kie looked in her new friend's eyes with a fierce sincerity.
"I, um, talked with Rafe earlier about an issue and he said you would be a good person to talk to. And it's awkward, for me at least, because I don't know you that well."
Kie continued to smile with kindness and empathy. "If Rafe is referring me. The thing is really big or hell froze over. But I promise it's okay."
"Okay." Deep breaths, she reminded herself. "Don't hate Rafe for telling me this, but he said that um, you came out to pretty much the whole island a few months ago." Y/n wasn't sure where to go with it.
"I'm pan. It was a hard thing to do, but I've never felt freer. Are you thinking about coming out or just curious if you would be able to pull me?"
"I actually came out to my parents a week ago." Y/n offered a soft smile. "Bi."
"Well from the look on your face, I take that it didn't go to well?"
Y/n shook her head then began retelling the story. Kie felt every ounce of heartbreak in her words.
"It's not easy. My parents didn't talk to me at first, kind of just wrote me off. But slowly they came around. I don't know for a fact how your parents are, but over time I hope you learn to fully accept yourself."
Y/n sat in thought. "My dad told me it was just a phase because 'I was bored of the men on the island.' Sometimes I second guess myself. It's not like I've even kissed a girl. What if I hate it?" Kie chuckled remembering the feeling.
"I think you know deep down." Kie turned to face her, blatantly glancing at her lips then back to her eyes. As she leaned in, she whispered, "can I?"
"Yes." Kie closed the gap, capturing her lips with her own. The feeling was intoxicating for both girls. Y/n never felt lips so smooth and sweet such as Kie's. Y/n pulled away before it got more heated.
"Did you like it? I mean kissing girls?"
"It's something I could definitely get used to." Her cheeks were heated.
"If you want to talk more, say the word. I'd love to get to know you more, y/n."
"Maybe it's the alcohol, but if I'm being honest, I'd love to kiss you more." Y/n stuttered on her words. "Just to make sure, you know."
"Yea, I do." Kie returned her mouth to its resting spot, melting in y/n's new found confidence.

The Cameron's annual New Years party was in full swing. Everyone who was somebody was there, letting loose, flooding the main floors. Rafe, per usual, stood in front of the pong table, y/n wrapped underneath his arm. "Babe, call an island." Rafe cooed in her ear.
"I don't know. They are gonna laugh if I don't get it," she drunkenly whined.
"I'll beat them up if the do. If you at least try, New York won't be the only place a ball or two drops." The pair shared a devilish grin as she called it. "That's my girl. Line it up."
"Shut up." Y/n focused in on the last two cups, plunging it in.
"Fuck you!" Topper shouts. "You always win. Remind me to never play against her them, Kelce." Everyone chuckled. This happened every time they played.
"Well you can find someone else, I'm going to hang out with my pretty girl." Rafe grinned as he pulled her closer. The couple has always been right person, wrong time and they had their own issues to work through. But now the stars aligned and the two managed to find each other once more. Now they've spent the last four months or so cherishing one another.
Once rafe had her in a less crowded room, he pressed her back to a wall. "So do I get a little winners kiss?"
"Hmm. Not til midnight."
He checked his watch. "It's two minutes till."
"Rafe I love you. So, so much. But my rule still stands. No kisses today. Not until midnight." It was something she did just to tease him and he knew it.
"Fine." He dipped his head to her shoulder, starting a line of open mouth kisses. "Don't mind me. Just waiting til midnight." He knew he was driving her crazy, but Rafe missed the taste of strawberry flavored lipgloss.
"Rafael!" She squealed and squirmed. "That tickles." His fingers began to dig into her sides. "Rafe!"
Those around them moved out to the main area preparing for the infamous ball drop, pulling the nearest person closer. The two stayed back listening to the chanting of others, engaging in a countdown of thier own.
"10." Rafe pressed kiss to her nuckles. "9." A kiss to her inner wrist. "8, 7." Two moving up the shoulder. "6, 5, 4." It was as if time had slowed with each kiss up her neck. "3." Rafe made his way to her forehead and both cheeks!with a simple two and one. Cheers erupted from the other room.
Y/n was breathless. "What now, baby?" In a swift motion, the man spun her around, dipping her as if it was a scene from a movie.
"Happy New Years." He kissed her with everything he had, never wanting to let go.
"I think I was promised  a little victory gift." The way she bat her eyelashes, Rafe knew she would be the death of him.
"Let's go."
Rafe trailed his fingertips down the girl's spine, absolutely relishing in the way it felt. She was unquestionably the most beautiful being in all of Outer Banks and he had the privilege of being called hers. Vice versus, she was his.
"You're so beautiful," the older man mumbled as he pressed a kiss to her temple. The girl laid naked against his chest, a leg thrown over his waist.
Memories of the night before flooded his brain. For the first time in his life, Rafe believed he was doing something right when he kissed the girl at midnight, starting the new year in the most perfect way. He wasn't sure how he survived any other way and he would do anything to be the one to kiss her every year when the ball drops.
Y/n began to stir as he let his hand circle her perfectly plump bottom. "Mmm." She hummed, shifting herself to lay completely flat against his chest, her legs now resting between his. Every breath Rafe took woke y/n up even more, soothing her out of the dream state. "Mmm."
Rafe couldn't understand what she was saying. His only thought focused on the way she tightened her grip around his torso. "Baby, are you with me?" He brushed a few strands of her hair behind the ear.
A small pout made way to her soft lips."No." The girl rest her chin so she could stare into his captivating blue eyes. "Not yet."
Rafe pulled her closer until his lips hovered over hers. "How about now?" He closed the gap, creating a slow and steady pace for the pair. His hands remained roaming every square inch of her skin, melting into her soft airy breath.
Y/n pulled away, smiled, then laid her back to her chest. "Can I, um," she rubbed her eyes. "Can I-" her voice trailed off, but Rafe just grinned.
"You want to go back to sleep?" The girl sheepishly nodded as Rafe allowed his palms to find home on her hips. "I wish we could stay like this forever."
Y/n's eyes fluttered, trying to stay awake. The way he felt against her made her want to take in every second of the moment. "Why can't we?"
"Well the house is a little trashed and I don't think dad and rose want to see it." He couldn't contain himself from planting more kisses on her face.
"Let's just get our own place and we don't have to clean it right away." Y/n shifted herself then adjusted her hair before laying back down. "Or better yet we hire people so then we can stay like this. Start off the year right."
"Not too bad." He grinned, mentally making note to look for housing. "But that doesn't change the fact we have to clean today."
Rafe lightly pushed her so she was sitting up right. "Are you really telling me I have to put on clothes? That's a first."
"I never said that. Sarah is at John B's. Wheezie when to some friend's party. It's just you and me." Her cheeks filled with heat at the thought. Next thing he sees was her completely bare, standing up, dragging him along.
"I think breakfast awaits."
Once he had his footing, he turned to her. "Loser makes the pancakes." Rafe was already halfway out the room.
"Rafe, I'm tired." She yelled from the opposite side of the house.
"We're almost done." Y/n could her the clanking of glass bottles from afar.
"But I miss you." It was true. Y/n hated being away from him for long, within reason that is, but being in the same house and so far apart was the nearest thing to a hell on earth. She busied herself with straighting the room. It was her last one and rafe was on his last one, so it wouldn't be too long. "Really bad."
"I have to take the bag out to the trash, then we have the whole day for whatever we want." His voice implied.
"I just want to hold you and be held by you." The girl walked her bag to where he was.
A toothy grin appeared on his face. "You look even more beautiful than I remember." The both were wearing boxers and she opted for her cropped graphic tee, just in case someone came home. "How could I ever resist you?"
Rafe set his garbage bag by the back door, his girlfriend following suit. "We can take it out tonight, right rafey?"
"God, I hate when you call me that." He playfully rolled his eyes. "Couch. Now, woman."
With that, the two spent the first day of the new year in each other's arms. "These are the memories I'm going to hold on to. When things get bad, these are what will hold me up." She whispered in his embraced.
He loved everything she had to say and wanted to hang on to her for the rest of his life. "Please don't ever become a strange."

Y/n sat with her feet dangled off the edge. Life and death at her fingertips. She exhaled slowly. "I don't want to die, but I don't know what I'm living for either." Y/n confessed to the moon. Even he would go away for some time.
Tears continued to pour down here cheeks, burning the bruise forming on her face. What did I do to deserve the venom he pours out. My own father. The beatings were nothing new, but lately it's been getting worse. Not that anybody pays attention. Especially a nobody from the cut.
"I needed the money you fucking whore." Her father screamed in her face.
Unable to move in fear, he grabbed his daughter by the hair and threw her to the ground. A small gash quickly formed above the eye.
"Dad." Y/n tried to reason with her father. "We have to pay the bills."
"Well get it back. I had something in mind to buy." Drugs. He meant drugs. Specifically the white powder that coated the counter.
Y/n tried to push out the memories and began walking around. Everything is closing right now, but she wasn't ready to back. Maybe a late night surf, she thought.
Quickly, she walked home to grab her gear from the garage and headed back to the coast. Y/n wasn't sure if she could call it her happy spot. She was rarely happy anymore, just distracted.
Y/n slipped off her hoodie and headed straight for the water. Waves crashing around her. She got up a few times, surfing through the barrel only once before crashing down. As Y/n bobbed in water, she thought of something she only does out on the water. She thought of her brother. Maybe he was looking down smiling at her? She hoped and prayed because Y/n never wanted to disappoint him.
"Way to go!" A voice called from the shoreline. Heat flooded her face. Who would even be out her this time at night? Y/n heard a few more voice chatter as she swam in. One she could distinctly call out. JJ Maybank.
The boy she sat behind in math. Everyone thought he was cute. Who wouldn't? Y/n was thankful for the darkness hiding her faint blush. They hooked up a few times, mostly after a kegger, but that was as far as that went. Nothing more than a few hellos and "do you have the answers?"
"Y/n?" He called as she got out and carried her board to shore.
Y/n plastered on her smile. "Jj! What are you doing here?"
"Us poges just got done eating at the wreck and saw someone surfing. We wanted to check it out." He proudly stated. Y/n grew insecure, wondering how much they all saw. How embarrassing she thought. She took a few nasty tumbles.
The rest of the group stood around in silence as Y/n wrapped a towel around herself. "I'm pretty sure you know John B, Pope, Kiara, and Sarah."
"Not personally, but hello. I'm Y/n."
Kiara smiled. "I've seen some of your art hanging in school. Amazing work."
Y/n hummed a thanks and made small talk until dismissing herself.
John B and Sarah walked hand in hand, talking in hushed tones with JJ as everyone else headed to the van. "What do you know about her JJ?" Sarah asked, curious about the girl she barely knew.
JJ shrugged. "Y/n always has a lot of pencils and she is super smart. Although very quite. Apparently she is good at art too."
"She seems really nice. Who does she hang out with?" This only earned another shrug.
"I only see her in math. We don't talk a whole lot." He ran his fingers through the his messy blonde hair, pushing it back. He wasn't sure if he should mention their hooking up."Why so curious?"
Sarah pressed her lips together. "There's just something about her. Crazy how we can go to the same school for years and I don't even know her that well. I know nearly everyone."
John B finally chimed in as JJ sped up in front of teen. "Okay ms. social butterfly, are we taking you home or are you coming back with us."
She giggled. "I think I better go home. Raef would kill me if I'm out again."
John B kissed her on the temple. "I love your heart for other people, you know that?"
The rest of the night wrapped up quickly for them and they all headed to bed.

Y/n looked in the mirror one last time. All the bruises were perfectly covered. An art she learned young. It was cooler than most days, so the sweats wouldn't be completely odd. It's better than the tight shirt clingy to the open wounds.
She glanced at the clock. "Shit." She muttered, hoping she wasn't gonna be late. Running down the stairs and slipping past her father passed out on the couch, Y/n made it to the car.
The drive to school wasn't long but she dreaded it. A constant reminder of how she's alone. Her few friends either moved or died. "Just one of those quite kids" people called her. Little do they know why.
Y/n walked through the halls. Kids talked about some kegger happening that night. Others chatted about homework. A few more weeks and junior year would be over. Y/n counted every day.
"Hey Y/n." Sarah smiled and wave. Weird, her and John B usually just pass by. Probably because she saw them last night. Y/n returned the gesture and headed to first period. Pre-calc. Her favorite, though she would never admit that.
The teacher greeted her and she a seat. Right behind the blonde boy. "Morning Y/n."
She smiled. "Morning JJ. Need a pencil?"
He let out a chuckle. "Of course. But I wouldn't ask anyone else."
"I might have to run to the store soon if you don't start returning these." Y/n pulled a simple number two pencil from her bag and handed it to him. The morning usual.
JJ leaned back in his chair and shifted to look at her. She was quite beautiful and everyone knew that, but he would never say it. "What were you doing on the waves that late?"
"Trying to live." Her words implied something way deeper than he could possibly understand. A sad smile appeared on her lips.
"Well there's this party tonight. You should come." Y/n pondered his words. "Maybe after we could ride some waves." He followed the statement with a smirk.
"JJ, why do I have the feeling you're not talking about surfing."
The boy ran his fingers through his hair and grinned. "I wanna see you do that trick again, miss Y/n."
"I think I'll look pretty stupid if I bring my board."
"Just keep it in car. Please come. It'll be fun. I'll even hang out with you." Y/n rolled her eyes.
She giggled. "Okay fine. I'll be there."
"Good good." The boy mumbles and turns back to the front making conversation with the kid next to him before class began.
"Okay the final study packet is due-" the teacher continued to talk about what we needed to know and then dismissed us to work. "I have to step out of the classroom and handle some stuff. If you have any questions ask Y/n." Y/n roll her eyes and throw her head on the desk.
"What do you have in this class anyways?" JJ turned around again once she left.
Y/n shrugged. "A 97." Math once something that came easy to her. She always pushes for good grades. Just like her brother. Y/n really just wanted to make something of herself. Maybe her father wouldn't see her as a disappointment.
JJ jaw dropped. "How?" JJ struggled when it came to school. Maybe it was the fact he rarely payed attention, let alone show up. "Everyone is struggling for a B."
The corners of her mouth turned upward. "If you need help, just say something. No need to be secretive." Y/n loved these games. A little banter here and there. Strictly platonic. Until it wasn't.
JJ grabbed his paper and set it on her desk. "Okay miss teacher. Teach." With that class passed pretty quickly.
After math, JJ decided to head back to John B's. He didn't care about school that much but it was a good escape sometimes.
Once he got there, he sat on the hammock, rolled a blunt, and passed out. The act of living wore him out. Issues with his dad at home, crazy adventures with the pogues, and school. Sometimes it could be a little too much. Granted he loved his friends no matter what. He was just exhausted. "Summer is coming soon." He'd tell himself. "A new start."
JJ also took this time to ponder the girl in his math class. Y/n Y/L/n. A breath of fresh air. She was always kind. Nothing he'd ever met before. He's never hooked up with someone so intelligent and open. JJ wanted to get to know her more but was clueless on how to go about. Girls flock to him, he never chases. Plus she probably wasn't interested in him like that. It's been strictly sex. That's it.
"JJ" John B called as he hopped out of the van. A grin plastered on his face. "Pregaming already?" JJ turned over and groaned. "Get up JJ." John B helped him up. A smile never leaving his lips. With that, they all hung out until it was time to head to the bone yard.

Y/n showed up later than most people, but that didn't stop her from jumping right in. She said hello to some people from classes then grabbed two shots on a table and downed them.
"No chaser?" JJ wrapped his arms around her from behind.
She looked up with innocent eyes. "Only you." They both let out a laugh.
"Come on." JJ guided her through the sea of people with his hand on the back where the shoulders meet the neck. Y/n liked the feeling as well. She felt important, almost as if she was protected.
She felt foolish thinking that a hand on the back is protective. Maybe she just hasn't felt anything remotely close in so long.
"Y/n, you remember them." Gesturing towards Sarah, John B, Pope, and Kiara.
She smiled and waved. "I love your top." Sarah Cameron gushed over her. JJ didn't know how to say it, but he loved it as well.
Y/n wore a white mesh sleeve corset top, frayed jean shorts, and a folded head scarf holding her waves back. She looked absolutely stunning.
"Me? Look at your dress! Doesn't she look just darling, John B?" Sarah twirled in her blue floral v-neck dress.
"Don't I, John B?" John B grabbed his girlfriend and kissed her on the temple.
"I like you Y/n. We're keeping you around." Sarah giggled and soon her and John B walked away to go socialize. Kiara and Pope went off in different directions.
"Wanna go for a walk?" Y/n asked.
"Lead the way."

"Y/n." JJ was getting dragged by the hand along the coast. Her hair whipping behind her as she ran.
"You gotta keep up." She stumbled over her words and nearly tripped a few times.
"You've had a little too much to drink, didn't you, Y/n?" Giggles erupted from her lips.
She stopped and looked at JJ in the eyes. JJ was mesmerized by the beautiful green reflected in the moonlight. In an instance, he pulled her hips in, pressing his lips to hers. They moved in a perfect rhythm, hands wandering the bodies before them.
"You're so beautifully sculpted, Mr. JJ Maybank." Y/n mumbled against his lips.
Both his hands traveled to her thighs lifting Y/n up and carrying towards the edge of the water. "Is that so, Miss Y/L/n?"
With both her arms around his neck she slightly pulled back. "A few compliments back would be nice."
"You are as beautiful as the goddess of beauty and as tall as a Buffalo."
They both snickered. "Are buffalos 5ft 3in?"
"Give or take." Her feet touched the cool water as they returned to kissing. JJ glided his hands up her bare back and played with the hem of Y/n's top. She quickly helped him by pulling it over her head.
JJ gazed her body, stopping cold in his tracks. "Y/n-?" He began but was cut short when she started trailing kisses down his jaw. Even she could feel the tension. "Y/n, what happened?" His hands rested on her hips but gesturing to her bruised ribs.
"Fathers, ya know?" She tried to laugh it off. Why did he have to mention it, she thought to herself.
"I do." His face flooded with pain. Of course he knew. But she didn't deserve it. JJ knew how to defend himself. It was man to man with his father, but this wasn't fair. She wouldn't even kill the spider that crawled across her papers in math. "What happened?"
Y/n pulled back and gained a small distance between them. "You can talk to me." He pleaded.
"Maybe we should just head back." She grabbed her shirt, trying to put it on it a hurry.
"Fuck." She screamed in frustration. Tears at the surface.
JJ walked over to where she stood and helped her put it on. That's when the tears flooded. She began cursing at herself. "I can handle myself. I can do this by myself. I'm not some helpless girl." JJ could feel the anger rising. An anger he knew all to well.
"You are so strong. I'm not saying you can't do this. But I want you to know you don't have go through this alone. I know what it's like." Her body crumpled over as she sobbed. This was not the girl he knew. Usually so put together, calm, and in control of her emotions. Now he saw her in a different light. More human and, in its own twisted way, relatable.
JJ sat beside her and pulled her close, holding Y/n like Kiara, Pope, and John B have done in the past. The tables have turned.
"I'm sorry I ruined tonight. I ruined the mood. I am so sorry." Guilt written on her face. But she had nothing to be guilty for. She curled into his side.
Y/n was in shock. She never let her guard down, she never breaks down in front of people. Not even her brother. So why now? In front of the one guy she'd least expect it. Maybe because it was built up over so much time, or maybe it was the fact he really did understand. Her heart was betraying what she knew.
JJ continued to hold her. Once he felt her breathing calm down, he spoke. "What's going on in the pretty little brain of yours?" He brushed some loose strands of hair from her cheeks.
"I-" she began but closed her mouth. JJ silently played with the ends of her hair, cheering her on. "I've never had anybody notice. It was easier when it's just me." Y/n let out a shaky sigh. "I guess makeup can only do so much."
JJ sat her up. "See this scar on my lip?" She gently brought her fingers to the spot. "That thing has been busted open more times I can count because of my father. And see on my knuckles?" He held up a loose fist. "I've sent my hand through a wall. Trying to fight back."
Y/n lifts her hand as well. "I have one of those too. I was just really angry though."
JJ hung his head with a small chuckle. "See, you aren't alone in this. We all have scars. Some more similar than others, but you never have to go through it alone. I trust John B with my life. I may not tell him everything, but I know I have him in my corner to talk me down. Who do you go to?"
Y/n hung her head. She knew she had Mira , her brothers girlfriend before he passed, but that was really it. She didn't even know how bad it was. Especially once her brother was gone, she didn't want to burden her friend even more. It hasn't even been a full month since the accident.
Tears flooded Y/n's face once more as she shook her head. "I can't go to them. They wouldn't understand anyways."
"If you can't go to them, come to me." JJ's mind was racing. How long had this been going on? How did she manage like this? How could anyone do this to her? He felt his anger build up. A deep hatred for the man she calls a father. It was the same hatred he felt for his own.
"JJ?" Her voice was barely above a whisper. He looked her in the eyes and nodded. "Can we please just move on from this? I don't like talking about it."
"Of course, Y/n. I don't want to pressure you to do anything you don't want to. Sorry if I made you feel like you had to open up-" he was rambling and she knew it. So to shut him she kissed him.
Not a long lingering one leading to more, but a simple and sweet peck. "Oh and JJ?"
"Yes, Y/n."
"Can you please just hold me for a little while longer?" And so he did, wrapping her body in between his arms while she curled into a near fetal position.
JJ had very few thoughts after this except one. Y/n was more than just a hookup, more than some acquaintance in his class. She was his friend. If not, maybe something more.

JJ and Y/n had talked all night only realizing that once the sun had risen. "Shit, I have work." She checked her watch reading 06:38.
"Do you need to run by your house or anything? JJ asked, still processing the fact it's too early to be up.
Y/n shook her head no. "I have everything in the car. Do you need a ride to John B's?" He began to grin.
"If you wouldn't mind." He stood up and stretched. Y/n enjoyed the view, not only him, but the silhouette casted by the rising sun. She felt closer to JJ after last night and saw him in new way.
He wasn't some overly cocky blonde headed boy, JJ Maybank was caring and mentally strong no matter what he might come off as. They spent the night talking on the beach about everything under the sun from their fathers to their favorite finger. It was nice to see his true colors beyond math class. Maybe they weren't so different, Y/n thought to herself.
"Come on we have to get you to work and I want to try and get back some sleep." Both smiled at each other, never breaking eye contact.
"Y/n." She hummed to the sound of his voice. "I really enjoyed last night and I would love to continue to get to know you more." Her eyes darted to shoreline as they walked. "I- I mean if you want. I completely get it."
Y/n thought about her words carefully, not wanting to sound too eager. "I would like that very much JJ."
JJ face beamed. But in the back of his mind he was trying to sort through his feeling. He genuinely liked her, but was it truly in a way more than friends? This was something he has never experienced anything remotely close. JJ felt a sense of protection for Y/n. It was different from his protection for the pogues. That came from a sense of loyalty. For Y/n, it came from understanding.
They both hopped into her mini van and took off. JJ's eyes roamed the car. The back seats we folded down and a mattress placed on top, small plastic containers holding clothes. For the back of a van, she made the most of the space. "You live back there?" JJ gestured?
"On occasion. Sometimes I just like to drive up to the cliffs, pop the trunk and think." Her eyes showed with innocence.
"No surf board?" JJ cocked an eyebrow.
"Behind the boxes. You told me to bring it, remember."
"Ah yes. I do."
Y/n's face darkened with a somberness. "I am really sorry about last night."
"Please Y/n, don't be. I completely get. The only difference is people know about my dad. We have our breaking points and sometimes people bring it out. A while back Kiara noticed the bruises. I have a feeling she already knew but there was no hiding from it once she mentioned it. She kept pestering me and I broke. There was a lot more leading up to it but still."
Y/n continued to listen intently to what he was saying.
"I'm glad you told me. Maybe now we can keep an eye for each other and check in. It's not an easy thing to go through and so many people don't understand. If you ever need to talk, you can always reach out." He rambled on. Y/n could feel how nervous so in a simple manner she grabbed his hand to reassure him.
"You have my word, JJ. And you can always come to me. I don't know if I can be as much help as you were to me, but I will be here to listen." Y/n looked at him and grinned." I might even be able hold you like you did."
"I'll count on it." The car ride became quiet but both not letting go of the others hand. JJ felt important and wanted. Not wanted, needed. For the first time in a long time he felt good, that what he went through wasn't a complete waste. He could use it to help Y/n. JJ could sense she didn't know how to process her.
Y/n kept glancing at their hands still intertwined. For once in her life she felt heard. It was different from her brother and Mira. Plus she felt like JJ wasn't forced to listen. A brother is like a built in vent box, so is his girlfriend. JJ understood on a whole other level. Just his presence brought a sense of comfort. She felt so lost, but he was guiding her. It was all so new to her.
"We're here." Y/n said as she put the car in park.
"I know you're working, but would you like to hang out with John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope and I after? We're probably just gonna chill around a small fire. They think you're really cool, especially after last night." JJ seemed a little shyer than usual.
"Sounds like a plan. I'll text you when I'm on my way."
"Good, good." He said and opened the door, released her hand, and went up to John B's door step. Before he went inside, JJ turned and waved. Then Y/n was off.
"You here pretty early." John B sat in the kitchen area eating breakfast. He noticed JJ's dream like state.
"She had to work." JJ sat down with a sigh.
"Did you fuck her?" Instead of responding, JJ shook his head no. This surprised John B. He's seen Y/n slip out the door on several accounts after keggers. "Then what happened, bud?" John B's had a small smile on his face.
JJ spoke without thinking a single thought, anything in his head. "We we're gonna fuck, but then stuff happened and we ended up talking and it was a really good talk. And we just talked, then the sun came up and it was basically time to go." This went on for at least 20 minutes and woke Sarah up. "Is it okay if she hangs out tonight? I kind of already asked her. I didn't think you would mind."
"I've never seen him so smitten before."
"Sarah don't be silly. You know I prefer gloves."
John B let out a howl. "Babe, I don't think he knows what that means." In a louder tone than before, John B agreed she could come, then Sarah and John B got JJ upstairs.
"She held my hand John B. No one ever does that." They close the door on him, encouraging him to go to bed.

"It's not important I even go back to school. Nothing is important anymore." Ricky sighed. "Who cares about the hypotenuse side of the triangle." She was clearly fighting it
"Life is about connecting with the things around you." Ricky learned he had to be the one to put his foot down. JJ could manage sometimes but he had a soft spot for his sister and hated when there was conflict between them. "This is one way, to do that. In fact, we already found you a teacher."
Her body stilled. There was no fighting this. Ricky was out to ruin and embarrass her. She hated herself for not being able to take care of herself, she was learning, but it was nowhere where she needed to be. "Who is it?"
JJ turned to Ricky with a worried expression. 'Do we tell her?' He mouthed. The older man simply nodded yes. "Pope Heyward."
The color drained from her face as the girl scrambled to her feet. "You're lying. He's in Colorado. He's working."
"I talked to him yesterday. He transferred. He plans to come over in the evenings and weekends. We already worked it out."
Both of the guys knew she would be upset, but the never expected the frantic panic. Y/n was red in the face, pushing anything in the girls way. "I won't do it. I have done everything you've asked. You can forget about this. I will not be taught by Pope Heyward."
Ricky and JJ simply watched the scene unfold. "I don't want to do this." She screamed "JJ don't make me do this. Please"
"I think," JJ tried to gain his composure, but he was failing miserably. He had to wall his heart to make it. "I think you need to go to your room and calm down."
The girl's face twisted as she wept. She shuffled her feet to the nearest wall in hopes to give her some stability and guidance to solidarity. "None of you understand. He's only doing this because he feels bad. That's why anyone stays. JJ, you just don't want to feel guilty for not being there. Ricky you feel like it's your job because you have training with this." Her sobs grew softer and her heart turned to stone. "It would have been better if I just died. Everyone could move on."
JJ moved to wrap his arms around her. "Don't say that. Please don't say that." She could feel his tears on her shoulder. "I love you and I worry about you. I want you to feel confident in taking care of yourself. I want you to be as independent as you can be in case I'm not around. I love you so much to the point I would have completely lost myself with out you." She eased into his embrace.
"I know you do. It was wrong of me to say that." Y/n hid her face. The other man in the room slowly stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder in comfort.
"You're right. We don't understand." Ricky spoke. "And that scares us the most because we want to help but we can only do so much. And then we have moments like what just happened and it feels like a set back."
Y/n placed a hand over his. "I just can't face him. He's gonna know I lied and he's still gonna stay after I hurt him."
"He would never stay out of pity. I saw the look in his eyes. He still loves you, I promise." She thought back to the last time she saw pope. When she asked about how he looked at her. Y/n realized how selfish she had been and for the first time she thought of someone else.
"He can't."
"Why not?" JJ curiously asked.
"Would you want to spend the rest of your life with someone who could never see you? Someone who would never be able to be alone for a few hours?" His frown grew deeper.
"It's not what I originally had planned, but the thought doesn't scare me. You know, I've had a lot practice lately." A gentle smile graced her face once more.
"You're not everyone."
"You're right. I'm not. But you never know how others feel or what they want." He tightened his grip on her. "Pope promised to be professional, here to help you. It's not going to be easy, but then again, you realized that nothing in your life with truly be easy again."
Ricky butted in. "You can either work with pope or fight him. That's up to you."
"Man. Not helping." JJ shot at his cousin after feeling y/n tense up. She felt completely helpless. It would never be her way. She lost her sight and now her choice. In essence, she lost her freedom, being confined to the familiar.
"I'm tired. I'm going to go lay down." She allowed Ricky and JJ to assist her to her room. It was faster that way.
"He'll be here tomorrow evening, apple bee. Rest up." They both left her to get ready herself.
She made the decision, laying in bed, that night. When Pope Heyward got there, he would not see some damsel in distress, a poor girl who needed help. She would do everything he required of her, times two. The sooner she completely the tasks, the sooner he would leave. No matter what JJ said about not knowing what others wanted, she wouldn't put pope through that and allowing him to settle. Even if that meant pushing her heart aside. Tomorrow it would all begin.
— "He's here." JJ knocked lightly.
His sister sat in front of her mirror, staring vacantly. "Do I look alright?" It was weird to hear her ask that. Y/n was never the girl who had to worry about looks. She had the long hair and doe eyed look that wrapped everyone around her finger. For her to ask him that, showed her vulnerability.
"You have the kindest smile and the worlds most gentlest touch." JJ did his best to keep compliments away from things she couldn't see, just like Ricky taught him, but he couldn't refrain. "You are captivating as ever and I mean that. Maybank's honor."
"Maybank's honor my ass, mr. Kleptomaniac." Her giggles ran throughout the whole house.
JJ gave her a hug. "I really mean it though. You have never looked more beautiful." Here figure shook with anxiety. "It's going to be okay. I will be outside in the back."
"I'm gonna walk myself, if you don't mind." JJ nodded at her strive for independence and walked away.
Her movements went soft and deliberate, the famous chin was tilted in air, showing Pope her defenses were high and she was willing to put up a fight.
"Hello, y/n." Her heart dropped. He sounded so different, so tired and worn out.
"Pope." Her voice chilled him.
"Would you like to begin?" She nodded and took her seat. JJ told pope she was capable by herself and to only help if she asks, but he never expected her to be so graceful. "So I have a book laid out in front of you. I want you to feel the pages."
The young woman ran her fingers across the table, up onto the the pages. The bumps ran beneath her fingers. "Bubble letters?"
Pope laughed. "That's the same thing JJ called them."
"That's just proof I've been spending to much time with him." They both had smiles when JJ went to check in on them.
She eased up. It's been three weeks since they started the escapade. She found it easy to be around him. Y/n enjoyed his company.  He treated her the same as he did when he first tutored her in early high school. But the conversation never left her current studies.
Pope was amazed at how well she was reading braille. They sat outside on a picnic blanket, as she read some older poems out loud for all the pogues to hear. They were beyond proud.
"I know not how it falls on me, This summer evening, hushed and lone; Yet the faint wind comes soothingly With something of an olden tone.
"Forgive me if I've shunned so long Your gentle greeting, earth and air! But sorrow withers even the strong, And who can fight against despair?"
Everyone sat and applauded. In truth it was all too much for y/n. Her heart replayed the words over and over.

She had been consumed with a void over time. She tried to push it down for the sake of JJ and the others. And most importantly, Pope. She had to be okay.
But she felt hopeless when he wasn't by her side. He made her feel capable as if she could take on the world. But the voice in the back of her mind claiming she would be causing him to settle.
"I'm kind of tired, I think I will head back." She stood up.
JJ stayed sitting but reached to grab her wrist. "We're a little farther out than usual, do you need some help?"
"Can you just point me in the right direction?" And JJ did. Everyone stayed watching her, knowing there was something off.
JJ sighed, leaning into Kie. "I don't know how to fix it. She's doing so well, but it's like she's hollowed out. When it's just us, I get to hear her laugh and see remnants of the girl she used to be. But she shuts off when people are around."
Pope shook his head. "It's me."
"That's unlikely." John B tried to reason with his best friend.
"I know you said to give her space when she's tired, JJ, but I need to speak to her." The brother sighed then gave his approval.
Pope took off in a frantic sprint, rushing in with a series of loud crashes. "JJ!" The girl shouted out. "John B?" She felt useless, not being able to located them or see if they were hurt. "Where are you?"
"It's Pope. I just tripped on the way in." She made her way out of her room and neared his crash landing site.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"I need to talk to you." Y/n stayed still, allowing him to continue. "We haven't talked about what happened and I just need to get some things off my chest."
Y/n hung her head. "I was hurt to think you cheated on me. I felt like shit, but I could never hate you. And when I saw you in the grocery store, you looked right through me. Then I saw JJ's face and I knew. And I thought there was hope. If there wasn't another guy, maybe you still loved me."
"I do." She whispered.
"But you kept me at arms length all this time. So you say you still love me, but it's a whole lot of pain." Pope wanted to eat his words. He didn't mean any of it. He planned to be gentle with her, but the emotions got the best of him.
Tears slipped out of her eyes. "I'm sorry. When it first happened, I was so scared. I couldn't do anything without JJ. I wallowed in my self pity. And by the time I came to my senses I figured you wouldn't want a blind girl, but you're kind enough to stay and work through it. You deserve the world. Someone who can look at you with the same love you do. And someone who can notice that love."
"Y/n. You already look at me with love. As much as you try to hide it. When you recognize a new word or learn something, you search for me with a grin. As for noticing the love, you don't have to see to know. Give me your hands."
She obliged, filled with worry and excitement. She trusted that Pope was not here to hurt her.
Pope pressed her hands to his cheeks. "Notice the smile on my lips?" The girl nodded. "Or the smile lines by my eyes?"
"But I can't touch you all the time. I can't always know."
"You're right, so ask me. I'll reassure you whenever you need. I love you for who you are and I want you for a lifetime."
She snaked her arms around his neck. "You mean it?"
"Of course I do. As long as you still want me?" He pressed his forehead to hers.
"Yea. I do." They stayed like that for a minute before pope led her the couch.
"I know you're probably tired. Can I just hold you while you sleep?"
She nodded. "Please."

"I can't clean it if I can't see." The girl huff, clearly annoyed, but JJ ignored it.
Ricky has been coming for the past six weeks, helping her and teaching JJ how to get y/n to be more independent. Right after the accident, the siblings relationship was borderline toxic. Y/n was like a parasite, sucking JJ's goodness and love right out of him. So Ricky explained to the two about setting boundaries and respecting boundaries. Y/n was making headway. Some days were better than others.
"It doesn't have to be perfect, I want you to use the dish soap and sponge to get the crusted food." He wanted to scream at her sometimes. Tell her she's being a self-centered brat. But he knew that would crush her to feel he turned on her. He hasn't but if she felt any anger towards her, JJ feared all this work would be for nothing.
"I don't want it all over me." JJ wouldn't allow no for an answer.
"Y/n. I want you to do this. You need to at least try." Put your foot down, Ricky's words replayed in his mind. With love, you know she can be sensitive and now that she can't see you, she'll focus on the tone of voice. "It's up to you if want to try, if not, I won't read to you before bed."
"You're treating me like a child." She carefully set down the plate.
"Because you are choosing to act like one." JJ snapped. He stopped himself just short of asking what would pope say? But no one mentioned him around her. His text flooded her inbox, untouched and unanswered. Ricky taught her how to make calls and send / receive text. It was up to her what she told pope.
"Fine. I'll try." She huffed again. JJ silently thanked her and announced him leaving the room. Y/n learned how to navigate to house fairly well, along with a few shops downtown. She's been acquainted with the wreck a few times, but getting out of the house was exhausting so it didn't happen more than once a week.
Pope's scanned over the text. The way it started with 'pope'. No good morning or sweet I miss you. What else could he expect after weeks of no contact. He stopped reaching out after four or five. Maybe a drunk text of how much it hurt to be ignored like this. Even when there was only friendship between them, she always got back to him. Now he wishes she would have continued ignoring him. It would hurt way less than the truth.
He read it over multiple times, comparing it to previous messages before. What once was full of love and light, now hung with dullness and bitter pain.
Oh y/n. His heart cried out. How could you do this to me? To us? We love each other. Pope stopped. Well did. Now it's just me. Y/n might have fallen for someone else while he was away, but he would never. His feelings for y/n started when they were young, but it was hard to navigate due to the fact she shared blood with his best friend. They finally started to explore a relationship and his feelings grew. But now it was all thrown in his face.
The pain seized his heart, his eyes landing on a letter from his school. It was his notice that a position opened up in Outer banks. He would be returning home within the week to shadow the local coroner.
He might not hate y/n or believe he could never love someone else again, but neither could he move back there, live in the same vicinity as her, and have to watch her look into another person's eyes with the same look he longed for.
"Oh, y/n." JJ's voice grew closer. "John B is here."
"How are you doing, goober?" His voice seemed deeper than she remember. He was gentle and kind, sti to this day.
"JJ made some eggs and then we're running to the store. Him and Ricky are trying to teach me to remember where everything is." Everyone could sense the upbeat tone. It wasn't as hard anymore. She still sat around most of the day, but now y/n accepted the company of her close friends. It was a step in the right direction. There had been moments when she almost seemed back to normal. From the giggles to the was she played with the ends of her hair.
"Sounds like you got a full day. Mind if I keep you company while he's getting it ready?"
"I don't mind at all. Please sit." And he did. Sometimes they would just sit in silence. Y/n hated feeling alone and now she relied on others to be her eyes. It was her own twisted fate at this point, but she tried to focus on the good things.
"Are you still wearing that stupid hat?" He chuckled.
"Always, but..." he trailed off before slipping it onto her head. "Looks better on you."
"So JJ was telling me, Ricky is teaching you to use your phone." The girl patted her pockets, looking for it.
"Watch this, bandana boy. Text John B." The phone spoke back asking for the message. "Hello."
The message was sent and John B received it a few seconds later. "That's amazing." John B sent a message back to her, curious to see it.
"Incoming message from John B, 'now you have no reason not to tell me good night.' Would you like to respond?"
The girl just grinned. "I'll try. I prefer calling though. Its easier and I don't have to think much."
"Well, I'd love to hear your voice more. Really miss having you on the hsm or at the chateau."
A small smile appears on her lips. "I'm not sure I'll ever be ready for a day on the boat, but I promise one day I'll make it to your humble abode."
"Perfect." He wanted to give her a big hug, but refrained. "I know you can get to the kitchen by yourself, but can I offer you an arm for some assistance."
"Lead the way." She gently wrapped around his arm. It was in moments like this she thought of pope. It was hard to keep the image of what it would be like to allow him to lead her. But her pride numbed her to the pain. She didn't need him. Just put him from your mind. He wouldn't want you if he knew. So just stop.
The last stop was the grocery store. Y/n was quite acquainted with area. Comfortable if you asked JJ. She could recognize the voices of the workers. They went there at the same time, same day of the week.
"Did you put fruit on the list?" His sister asked.
"Fruit?"
"Yes, you said the other stuff went bad. I've been craving apples."
"We can grab some. Do you remember your step count?"
"Yes. I'm by the chips. It's five steps left from the end of the aisle, then four  left."
Jj chuckled. "Close enough." He took a spot next to her as she felt to see if the apples were ripe enough. It was when JJ handed his sister the last of the batch he saw him. Nothing could have prepared JJ for the sight of none other than Pope Heyward. Looking like a man in a dream, he swiftly moved towards them. Y/n was focused intently on the fruit, she didn't need any assistance.
JJ couldn't form a sentence as he approached. The friends eyes focused on y/n discovering the truth for the first time. His emotions were heavily guarded, most likely for his own heart. JJ could only think about what his sister did to push Pope away.  His face changed as he saw y/n's movements change.
JJ was thankful no one else was around to witness the interaction as Pope stepped with feet of the girl, staring into her. Y/n only stared through him, completely oblivious to Pope's presence.
"We're gonna have to keep the red apples from the green. That way I don't get them confused."  Y/n didn't hear a response and tried to remain calm. Don't give people a reason to stare.
"JJ? JJ." She took a deep breathe holding back panic. "Did you leave me?"
The uncertainty and distress broke through JJ's brain. "Sorry I was thinking. You didn't tell you wanted red apples as well."
"You're telling me, these are all green. You let me grab green ones?" JJ heard the exhaustion in her voice.
"No. I'm just kidding." He awkwardly chuckled. "You have six of each."
"Is everything alright?"
"Yes. So are you happy with the apples?" The sister nodded. "How about you go and purchase the apples, yeah? Just like I taught you. And I'll be behind you for the rest of the items."
"Don't go to far." Y/n called out as she unfolded her cane. The young girl wasn't a fan of pulling it out, but she's learning to rely on it when JJ stepped away.
Pope just stared as she walked away. "When JJ?"
"Nearly three months ago." There is no one else. Pope made the connection. She cut him off because of the blindness. There is no other man. His mind filled with everything he wanted to say but couldn't.
"Is it permanent?" JJ nodded. Pope kept his eyes on his friend. The hurt was radiating off of pope, it was as if JJ experienced receiving the news all over again. He could see the same feeling he had in popes eyes.
"I have to talk to her."
"No, pope. Come by the house after she's asleep. We'll talk then." Pope opened his mouth to protest, but JJ cut him off. "It won't work like that Pope. She's come a far way and I won't put it all at risk. Tonight. Eight-o'clock."
With that JJ walked towards his sister, pretending as if nothing happened. He would be his normal, cheerful self for y/n's sake.
Pope shook as he waited for JJ to answer the door. His heart laid in two inside him. Y/n lied to him, made him feel like shit, but he knew it was all for her pride. She was a maybank for god's sake. They don't take hand outs and they sure as hell would never ask for help. It hurt. It really did.
"Pope. It's good to see you again." He pulled him into a hug.
"Wish it was under different circumstances, but it's good to see it too."
"Ricky just left, he's-" JJ was cut off by the soft patter of feet. Both boys turned their head towards the sound. Y/n was walking with a hand brushing the wall to help guide her. JJ casted a glance to Pope, but his friend only had eyes for Y/n. Nothing could break the connection. They both were staring at the girl when she missed her footing and tumbled to the ground.
Pope went to rush to her side so quick, JJ stepped in front to stop him. "Are you alright, y/n?" Her brother questioned.
"Yes."
"Do you need help?"
"No." Her answer was short and direct. "Are you alone?"
"No."
"Male or female?" Her hands went to go smooth her pajamas.
"Male."
"Am I properly covered?"
JJ sadly smiled. He could never imagine what it would be like to rely on others. "Yes. I thought you were going to bed."
"Forgot my water." Pope did his best to stay quiet, restraining himself to not reach out and spook her. In fact, she gave no regards to anyone else in the room besides JJ.
"I'll grab it for you." He lightly jogged to the kitchen to grab the bottle. Then he gently placed in in her hands, sending her of to bed with a hug.
"Good night, JJ." She hummed. "I love you."
"I love you, too." Once again, Pope is left speechless. With all the compassion JJ could muster, he led Pope to the living room to begin the hardest conversation
Tears brimmed both of the boys eyes as the relived the past few months. Catching up over few beers, contemplating their actions, more so where y/n was involved.
"If only I was there. Now Luke is off somewhere living it up while I'm playing the parent. I'm glad he is gone and I wouldn't trade it for the world. But things should never have turned out this way." JJ sighed taking a sip.
"You couldn't have known. That's just like saying, maybe if I didn't take the work-learning program, I could have been here to go with her. If it still happened, maybe she wouldn't have pushed me away and-" Pope just shrugged.
"We wanted to tell you, but she flipped anytime your name was mentioned. None of dare. What did she tell you?"
Pope's heart clenched thinking about it. "That she met someone else. That she hated me for leaving her."
"I'm sorry. We should have let you know." The conversation calmed down. "What are you doing back in obx? Wasn't expecting you until late spring."
"They transferred me. A slot opened up here and I took it on a whim. Not that I really had a choice."
"I'm glad your back. The others will be too."
Pope shifted to look at him. "Do you think y/n would be glad to know I'm back?"
JJ huffed in thought. "What if we didn't give her choice?" His friend looked confused. "You still good with the high school curriculum?"
"Where are you going with this?"
"She's falling behind with school. But what if she had some help. It would be a challenge, but you tutored me through my senior year."
"That's a stupid idea."
"Stupid things have good outcomes all the time." A sheepish grin formed on JJ's lips. "You could maybe teach her some of those bubble letters."
"Bubble letters?" Pope let out a laugh.
"The tiny bumps they taught us about way back. Why have I never thought about that. I always just read to her." JJ's eyes filled with wonder at the thought. What if she could read on her own? Wouldn't that be a sat.
Pope thought about it. "I'd do anything for her, JJ. You let me know when."
"I let you know in a few days. Ricky is going to stay with her tomorrow night so I'll be at the chateau. Wanna join?"
"Of course." Pope ended the night leaving with a heart full of hope. He was ready for whatever the future may hold.

"JJ! JJ!" The terrified voice called, and JJ rushed to his sister's side in seconds. The two haven't been separate since the accident, not that he wanted to be far from her. She always needed him.
"I'm here, Y/n. It's all right, I'm right here."
Y/n clung to her brother as if her life depended on it, trembling from head to foot. Her fear of the dark started when she was a child, now she stood in an infinite abyss of darkness and slightest change sent her into a spiral. Poor JJ put up with all the fits and tantrums, but the exhaustion was evident on his face. Not that y/n could see.
"Here," JJ suggested, "there's a small breeze you can feel from the porch. Why don't we go sit out there?"
She furiously shook her head. "No." No way she would sit on the front where people could walk by and stare. Not that they didn't stare anyways. She did everything to avoid anyone.
JJ understood her concern, but it was getting old. His sister was giving up on living and that broke his heart. "Then let me put a chair in front of the back window."
"Help me?" Her voice shook. She could barely sit down by herself.
"Take my hand." The pair began to move through out the house with y/n clutching his arm. The boy winced as she squeezed a particular tender spot. His arm was littered with scratches and bruises from y/n. She couldn't help it, she barely noticed anything other than her current and permanent state.
JJ took a seat on the couch, giving his sister some space and allowing him some personal time to think. He was barely holding on. There's no way he could continue this on his own. It's been three weeks to the day since the accident and it's been just as long since he went out. John B, Kie, and Sarah made efforts to stop by while the young girl slept or the girls helped when she needed to bathe. They've only seen her a few times, but the times was always cut short when she got "too tired." Truth is she was scared they would be staring too long and her insecurities got the best of her.
Y/n was terrified most of the time. The thought of never knowing what's before her was the worst. She couldn't see what was lurking in the shadows. At night when she was left in her room, JJ could here her cries, but he knew he couldn't be there forever. She had to get through the night on her own. Sometimes he would rush into her room, just to make sure she was alright, but ended up standing silently in the corner, letting tears escape his own eyes. He felt weak. First his sister, then hearing that his dad had fled the island. He never felt so alone and disconnected from his friends. He especially felt distant from his own sister. They used to stay up late talking about thier futures, getting off the island, getting away from Luke. Now he could barely get a full sentence out of her. She lost her eye sight and he lost his sister.
He used to love taking care of his sister, it was one of the joys of being a brother, but recently it was as his he was taking care of a seventeen year old baby. He hated to think that but it was too much sometimes. He didn't know what to do. He was helping her get ready in the morning, helping her eat. Again, he was growing weary.
Now JJ laid on the couch, staring at his sister. The blind girl just sat there. JJ tried to understand, but he couldn't. Her world shrunk until it was population one. A world where only she existed. It was unfair for JJ to think ill of her in this state, but y/n was being selfish. She didn't think how this affected him as well.
Just as quick as the thought came, the guilt was quick to follow. He desperately tried to sort through it when he heard a thump at the door.
"What was that?"
"Someone's at the door." He began to get up.
"Are you leaving?" Her body began to shake as she stretched out her arm.
"You stay here and sit tight. I'll be right back." With that, he kissed her forehead and walked away.
JJ was a little shocked to see Ricky standing on the porch, but the man was never unwelcomed. In fact, he was greeted with a familiar hug. "It's good to see you. What do I owe the pleasure?" JJ did his best to mask anything other than content and any ounce of joy he could muster.
"The fact I had to hear the news from people at work. I waited for you to tell me, but it's been too long." Ricky's eyes shown with hurt.
"It hasn't been easy. I've been-" his voice trailed off.
"Maybe I can offer some assistance because you look like dog shit man. Plus I have some experience with this all working in the medical field." JJ noticed the sincerity in his voice, he just hoped y/n did too.
"Come in." He offered. Stepping to the side. Ricky was a few steps into the house when y/n let out a wail. JJ ran to the room his sister remained in. Ricky just followed him at a slower pace, watching his cousin attempt to calm the girl down.
"Who's here?" She managed to speak up after some time.
He spoke softly. "Hey there, Apple Bee."
The girl stilled, looking like statue. "Hello Ricky."
"How's the arm?" She turned her face to the cool air, ignoring the question. Her sprained wrist wasn't the issue.
JJ gave an apologetic look. One that's never to far behind the mask. "Bruised and sprained. Doctor said she's lucky it wasn't broken."
Ricky nodded and took a seat. Silence filled the air, but not for long. Y/n began to throw her head around as if she was searching for something. Her hands followed suit as she tried to stand. "JJ? Are you here? Please tell me you didn't leave." Her voice was frantic.
Ricky noticed the panic in JJ's eyes and saw how much it affected him. Just glimpse into how the last few weeks have been. "Answer her from here." Ricky grabbed his shoulder.
"What?"
"Sit back down and answer from where you were."
JJ was confused, but listened anyways. "I'm still here, y/n. I haven't left."
"JJ! JJ!" The cries increased, but JJ forced himself sit back down.
"He's sitting down. Do you hear him?" Ricky managed to stay calm. "Does he sound mad, like he's playing a mean trick on you?"
"No." Her lower lip quivered. "B- but, I need to feel him."
"You're okay. He can't be at your every beckoning call. You need to trust us." Her breathing began to calm down as she stilled back into her chair. "JJ loves you, but you're taking advantage of him. You need to learn to do things on your own."
Ricky saw the pain in her face, knowing he struck a nerve. It was harsh, but from the short time he was there, he knew JJ was going to lose it. "Go to her."
And JJ went, grabbing her hand in his. "I'm so sorry."
"I'm done for the day. I want to go to my room." He chin tilted upwards.
"You are capable to take yourself." Ricky said sternly.
Frustration began to rise as she went to ask JJ. "I think, I'll let you find your way."
The girl collapse on the floor. "Please help me, JJ. Please."
The emotions got to much for the blonde boy, so he decided to step out of the house. "I'm getting some air. You'll be okay."
Ricky nodded, silently applauding his choice. "There's a lot of work that needs to be done. But I want you be self sufficient. I'm gonna to have to be hard on you, but it's because I love you, Apple Bee."
"I can't do it."
"Stand up, and I'll help you count your steps." She shyly stood up.
"Where's JJ?"
"He went outside, just like he said he would." The patient tone was back. "We're in the living room. Your turned away from the window. Tv on your left, the hallway your room is on the right."
And the journey began. It wasn't going to be easy for anyone, but JJ knew, with Ricky around, he would be able to breathe.

Pope loves me, Sarah. I never thought I would ever be able to say those words, but he does. It had changed y/n's world since that day. She hasn't been able to focus since, but y/n had to call and update her best friend on the matter.
I never fully understood the way you shined after you found John B, but I do now. I'm seventeen and a half years old and I'm in love. It feels so good. Y/n enjoyed talking about it any chance she could get.
Anytime Sarah received a call from the girl, she would smile. Then relay the details to John B almost immediately. Y/n talked about everything pope and her talked about while he was at college or what they did when he came to visit (which wasn't very often). The pair was nearly inseparable and had been talking about a wedding in the next few years. Everyone knew from the moment the pair made it official, nothing could ever separate them.
JJ pulled his sister in a tight hug. "Come on, angel eyes. I need you to focus on your grades. It was one thing for me to slack, but you have everything going for you."
"I don't feel like a child anymore." The young girl sighed. "Math seems utterly unimportant when you're thinking about marriage. Like I have everything I need already."
JJ ran a hand over her head. His baby sister was growing up all too fast. It feels like just yesterday he was packing her lunch and making sure she had the same pairs of shoes on. Now she's taking care of herself and thinking of fleeing the nest.
Life has been changing for everyone. John B, Sarah, and Kie managed to get in to UNC making the trip back to the Outer Banks more times then they are in class. It's been great though and JJ nor Y/n would complain.
As for pope, he is at a starting a life in Colorado and hasn't stayed in much contact with the rest of the pogues, but somehow he managed to swoop y/n off her feet and make time for her either by FaceTime or calls.
JJ smiled. "I can see how focusing is difficult, but you need to maintain that level of maturity to do both." He knew his words would get under her skin due to the fact she is a few years younger than pope and the rest of the gang.
And that did exactly what it was supposed to do. In a few weeks, by early October, the girl was doing exceptionally well. She was always out with her friends or JJ, keeping busy.
"Hey! I'm running by my house and then I'll be right back." The girl yelled out to John B who sat at the table going over his homework.
"Give me a minute. I can drive you." He worried for her quite often, especially after learning of her and JJ's home life.
"Luke won't be there. I just need a change of clothes." Y/n gave him a quick hug. Ever since pope said he loved her, she's been more joyful and cheery. There wasn't a person who didn't believe that being in love didn't suit her.
John B wanted to protest, but knew she would be alright. Y/n could always handle herself. "Call if you need anything. If I don't hear from you in twenty, I'm sending a swat team in."
With that the girl took off in a sprint. When she arrived, she noticed her own fathers truck in the front yard. He wasn't supposed to be home. She thought. Oh well.
Y/n ran around to back and began to scale the ladder and make it to the window. She heard luke's shouting first, then noticed the ladder shaking, and before she could catch a grip on the window sill, the girl was falling for more than six feet.
JJ heard the screams from the crash as he pulled up, noticing Luke scampering off. Once John B said his sister went home, he beelined it. Luke happened to be laid off, but unfortunately y/n didn't know.
Seeing y/n on her back and unconscious made his heart drop. He immediately pulled at his phone to call for help. It was nearly impossible to formulate a sentence without puking at the sight of blood . The idea that she might be in pain wrecked him. JJ left his sister lying flat, praying for someone to arrive soon.
It was only a few hours later when JJ heard the screams from Y/n's room that terrified the group. Everyone was huddled outside, receiving an update. "Jj?" Her voiced pierced through everything.
"Hold her still." Someone instructed a near by nurse. JJ pushed his way closer.
"Y/n, it's alright." He called out. "I'm right here."
"Help me!" She replied hysterically. "Where are you?" The girl swung her own arm against her head and went completely still.
JJ's body froze over, his face paling over. "What happened?"
"She fainted." The doctor had a somber look on his face. He knew what he saw. No one could deny it, but he couldn't bare to say it out loud. "We have to run a few more test-"
JJ recognized the look of pity from any where. "What else is it?"
"I can't say anything for sure until we run more test." JJ blankly stared at him.  "I believe there has been severe damage to her optical nerve. Happens more often when people fall that way and land on the back of her head."
"How would you know?" He seethed with anger. More confusion washed over him.
"Even coming of the sedation, most people can focus on their surroundings. Y/n couldn't even do that, let alone know where you were. I haven't seen much with it, but I'll call an optometrist to do a check up."
"She can't." The boy cried.
"Y/n won't be up or out of testing for a while. Go be with your friends." The doctor rested a hand on his shoulder. "I'll have a nurse stay with her."
JJ nodded and slowly stepped back into the hall noticing Kie. "Where's John B?"
"He took Sarah to stand outside for bit."
JJ desperately wanted to ask her for help, but he didn't know how. "I need to see him."
Kie noticed the way his legs shook with every step. He could barely support himself so she tucked herself under his arm to help get him to where he wanted to be.
It was a pitiful sight for anyone who looked upon them, but as soon as John B and Sarah saw them, the couple pulled apart.
"Oh, JJ." John B could spot the defeated look in his eye from a mile away. He could tell what was wrong?"Is she gonna make it?"
"She's gonna make it." The blonde boy pulled Kie a little closer. "But, they think she's blind."
The group went silent, only moving closer together in a hug. Life was about to change.

"What is that you want to do after school?" Kie asked, standing in the back of the kitchen. The pair had been discussing their futures while taking orders.
Y/n pushed her hair over a single shoulder and tilted her head."I don't know. I don't mind just working, but I really want to travel. See what's out there."
It was a nice dream, but most people from the cut barely left the island. Let alone a maybank. Kie kept it to herself though. "Anywhere in particular?"
"I'd love to see the Rocky Mountains in Colorado."
Kie grinned. "Plan on making any pitstops in Aroura." Pope had a co-op learning program for school there. He was loving it, always making sure to text or call y/n to keep her updated. She was one of the only people who weren't somewhat pissed that he left so abruptly.
"He's never suggested the idea and I would never go unless Pope himself invited me." Kie agreed softly before y/n turned away to hide her face. She always had wistful look in her eyes when Pope's name was brought up. When Pope left, y/n had just realized how deep her feelings went for her long time friend. She didn't say anything, not wanting to be the reason to hold him back. But the two corresponded daily, getting to know one another on a deeper level.
Y/n had been busy preparing a batch of fries when she saw him. She had no idea when he arrived or how long he had been watching, but Pope Heyward stood in the doorway with a smile on his face. "How did you-"
"I texted Kiara when I landed. Asked her to keep you busy." She stood in awe.
Four months! It's been four months since she last seen him. She hasn't heard his voice in person four months.
"I can't believe you're here." Her words were scrambled and flustered. No matter how many times she practiced what she would say none of it was coming out.
"Please, take a seat. I get off in ten minutes." He nodded and went out front to wait.
Pope couldn't believe he was there. Requesting time of from the work program was extremely difficult and it was very last minute.
After the girl clocked out, she made her way to his table. Her nerves getting the best of her. Y/n wasn't sure how to handle herself. Pope could see the girl physically shaking when he place a hand over hers. "Y/n." He spoke tenderly. "It's me, Pope."
She physically stilled at his touch. Something only he could do. With everyone else, it took time. But pope spoke directly to her heart. He always had that affect on her. "Oh, pope. I miss you."
The boy leaned across the table, gently stroking her cheek with the backs of his fingers. Y/n heart melted.
"I was gonna be so witty and charming when you came. Here I am making myself look stupid."
"I don't think your stupid." His hand was wrapped around hers once more.
They decided on taking a stroll along the beach as the pair caught up. "So what are you doing here?" She simply asked in a moment of quietness.
"I had to come." Pope turned to her, pulling both her hands to him. "Wanted to make sure the girl I've been texting was real."
Y/n felt the heat spread out her body. "Is she?"
"I'm thinking so."
Y/n just looked at him. "I forgot how handsome you were, pope. You look really good."
"You were about eight pounds lighter last time I saw you."
"I was a little upset."
"You were a little more than upset." Pope dragged the girl closer, pressing a small kiss to her forehead. "I'm sorry I was so insensitive to how you felt."
"You were beyond thrilled to receive the learning position and I felt utterly crushed. I couldn't really just tell you about it."
"I understand."
"And now," she sighed. "You've come to find the girl over the phone, but im not sure you will. I get so nervous when you're really here. I can't seem-" Pope placed a finger over her lips to calm her.
"Listen to me for a minute. Can you do that?" Y/n nodded. "My heart is changing. I think and hope yours is too. I'm here to see if there's something between us, Y/n, not to pressure of hurt you." Pope gently place a hand on the top of her head, allowing it to trace the side of her face. "I just wanted to be upfront with you."
"Thank you."
"And this is a camellia flower." He grinned placing the item behind her ear. "I remember you talking about how they are your favorite."
"They are." Y/n had spent the last four days with pope and the pogues. As much as they wanted to be mad at him, the missed him and were very proud of him. It just hurt he left so quickly.
Y/n noticed pope staring. She simply bowed her head and began playing wit the hem of her sun dress. "Why do you do that?"
"Do what?" She replied.
"Get busy with your hands. I mean it's every time I look at you." He tried to keep a level, light hearted, and upbeat tone.
The girl stopped all movements, but still never had the heart to meet his eyes. If I look at you and think I see love when there's not, I would just die. The thought alone kept her silent.
"Can't answer," he coaxed sweetly, "or don't want to?"
"I'm afraid for you to know how I feel. If you look at me for too long, I won't have a thought or secret left."
"You tend to carry your emotions in your eyes. Can't hide too far, from me at least.
The pair took a seat on a log overlooking the ocean. "Did you happen to get into it with JJ today?" He asked her.
"Kind of. He just said I'm spending too much time with you, but he's with Kie way more. It's a double standard.
"Maybe he's just scared."
Her eyebrows furrowed. "Of what?"
"Your his little sister, his number one friend." Pope pulled her head to rest on his shoulder. "He doesn't want to see you hurt. JJ notices the way I look at you."
"How do you look at me?" Her voice was sincere.
"Like a flower. You know looking at them is cool and all, but at some point you just want to be up close with them, touch them, and experience them. You want to hold them. I love looking at you, but JJ knows what attraction can do to a man, let alone add feelings into the mix. He knows very well how much I want to hold and kiss you."
Y/n panicked. "You never talked about that before."
"I wanted you to see my face when I tell you." He kissed her forehead once more. "One day, I want to kiss you, but not til you know for certain. I know I am."
"You can't know if you love me in five days time."
"Wanna bet? Because I'd take you with me right now, forever and ever. Till death do us part." Y/n buried her face in his chest. "I love you. And just because I'm leaving tomorrow, doesn't change that."

JJ stared at Rafe from across the table, adding to the already thick tension. The meal quickly cooled as he refused to eat it.
"I didn't poison it, if that's what your thinking." Rafe tried to ease what he could. The man resulted in pleading."You need to eat something at least."
"You can't cook for starters." He grimaced.
Rafe did his best to be genuine with his partner no matter how difficult to be. "I'm trying. Y/n said we should use this time and be kind to one another."
"She not here, is she?" JJ slammed a palm on the table. "No need to put on an act. I agreed to this," he gestured between them, "whatever it is, for her. She is the best thing that happened to me, but you, I can't stand you."
The Cameron man hung his head. The constant rejection was getting to him. "I thought we were past this. We've all been together for three months."
"We're in it for y/n, not each other." JJ's blue eyes pierced through him, searching for a sign. Maybe Rafe wouldn't totally reject him after all. He's done his best to push Rafe from his life in hopes to deflect extra hurt.
Rafe hated to admit it, but he had develop feelings for the pogue. As often as he denied it, the rejection finally got to him. "Would it be so wrong, if we were? I mean in it for y/n and each other?"
JJ's body physically relaxed until the fear seeped in and all defenses were boarded up. "I think it would be."
Rafe's eyes glossed over, everything beginning to get too much. "Um, I'm just gonna go upstairs." He paused to take a breathe. "I'll just stay in the guest room until y/n gets back." With that he was on his way.
JJ couldn't help but glance at him, noticing a look of pain. Rafe only stayed in the guest room when he had a really hard day and needed space. JJ typically took the couch on those days. As for y/n, she loved to snuggle inbetween Rafe and JJ as she shared every thought that came to mind.
She understood alone time was good for the boys, but she was always the one to sit and talk and bring them back. Especially Rafe. He would get so into his head, it was scary at times, even for JJ.
Rafe sat down on the guest bed, pulling out his phone. The number he dialed was a familiar one. "Y/n?"
"Hey Rafe, what's up?" Her voice already brought so much comfort. He missed her more than he could understand.
"Just needed to hear your voice. What are you up to today?" Y/n began to list all the store's the girls visited, demanding the boys let her have a mini fashion show for them.
"I wish you two were here. Only one more day." She finished up her story. "What did you do today?"
"I got some work done at the office, made dinner, and now I'm hanging in the room."
Y/n noticed the awkwardness in his voice. He always called it 'our room.' 'The room' referred to the guest room. "What happened?"
Rafe let a few tears fall before speaking. "He hates me. I'm trying so hard but he doesn't care." Y/n knew he was talking about JJ. They had spent many nights in the past talking about him. She tried talking to JJ about but he just dismissed it and changed the subject. "I don't understand why, but maybe he sees the same thing my father does. I'm no good for you, y/n. Maybe this is getting to be too much? I want you to be happy and I don't think that's me. I just-"
She cut him off. "Rafe. Your feelings are validated and if it is too much, I don't want to put you through more pain. But please, wait til I get home, so we can talk about it."
He agreed then hung up, needing all the time to think. Not to mention, he didn't want to worry the girl with more of his thoughts and tears.
JJ stood outside of the door, listening to the phone call and sobs. He felt bad for putting rafe through the pain. Truth is he didn't hate Rafe. He was scared to be rejected by him. It was hard for JJ to open up with y/n, but to wilingly do the same with the same person who made fun of him all growing up. It was too much. But the thought of Rafe leaving the relationship scared him even more.
"Rafe?" JJ lightly pushed the door open. The man sniffed in response. "I think it's time we talked."
"It's okay, JJ. I won't even fight you for her. It's too much. At least in the end she'll have you." His voice broke JJ's hearts.
"If you leave, she'll lose a part of herself. If I'm being honest I'd lose a piece of me." Rafe buried his head underneath the comforter.
"You don't have to lie to me."
"No. I do." He took a few strides to sit on the end of the bed. "I mean not lie to you. But I need to apologize."
"For what?"
"For pushing you away. For being too afraid of getting close to you. For hurting you with my actions."
Rafe shifted, trying to hold back any physical signs of hope. "JJ?"
"Yes?"
"I know I was terrible to you in the past, I said sorry and thought it would be good. I tried to do good, but you pushed it away. That hurt deep down because-" he cut himself off.
JJ went on a whim and decided to lay down next to him, unsure how to comfort him. But this is what y/n would do. She would wait for the other person to turn over and pull her closer when they were ready. "Because of what?"
"I never understood why and I thought you saw what my father did. A good for nothing, cheap, kid."
"I don't think that." JJ smiled. "I think you are extremely loyal and strong. You would do anything for y/n."
"And you, JJ." Rafe turned to face him. "As much as you may push my buttons sometimes, I do care for you."
"And me." JJ finished up. "Because we're in this together. With y/n. Can we try to work on this and give it a real shot? I think if we work together, it could go well."
Rafe wrapped his arms around the boy and pulled closer. "Me too."
JJ rested his head on his chest, listening to the steady heart beat. "I'm sorry about dinner. We can grab breakfast together if that works?"
"Sounds good." Rafe gave him a kiss on the forehead, before slipping into a light nap. He felt drained.
Not even an hour later, the bedroom door slipped opened revealing a distressed y/n. Both boys startled awake, not sure if they should release one another. "What are you doing back early?" JJ poked his head up.
"I was worried for you both. I was scared you weren't going to be here if I waited any longer, Rafe. And JJ, I was scared that you would eventually push me away." Her bottom lipped quivered.
"Come here." They scooted to make room for her, allowing y/n to be sandwiched in between.
"I love you." She kissed Rafe. He repeated it back. The she turned to JJ and kissed him. "I love you." Again he repeated it back. It was a normal occurrence, but JJ and Rafe surprised her.
Rafe looked into JJ's eyes. "I love you, JJ."
"I love you, Rafe." Then the two boys shared a small, intimate kiss. One that wasn't heavy or needy. Y/n couldn't help the smile that appeared on her lips.
