secret - luke danes
Tumblr media
luke danes x fem!reader
summary: lorelai oversteps and luke reveals your relationship
warnings: secret relationship, reader is younger than luke but no specific age is given, tiny bit of angst perhaps?
word count: 1.4k
“coffee?” luke asked, and you pushed your mug towards him with a smile.
“thanks.”
you were sitting at a table at luke’s diner when you overheard lorelai and rory talking about him,
the man oblivious as he went to fetch their order.
“do you think he’s dated anyone since rachel? lorelai said to her daughter in a hushed voice.
“I don’t know,” rory shrugged. “where would he meet anyone? he’s either here or in his apartment.”
“maybe he has a secret life. maybe he’s got a little chippy stowed away in mount pilot,” lorelai suggested, and rory laughed through her nose. “well we’ll know eventually.”
“i think he’s a bachelor for life.”
“and i think there’s someone for everyone,” the younger gilmore disagreed, before they began talking about music.
you tuned out the rest of their conversation, as it no longer pertained to your boyfriend. you and luke had been dating for about three months, and by some miracle had managed to keep it a secret; not an easy task in stars hollow. you couldn’t change the channel on the television in this town without someone finding out about it.
you were keeping the relationship hidden while it was new, since you were new to town and you were also a bit younger than luke. you had only moved here a little under six months ago; you didn’t need the added attention of a relationship while you were still settling into town, and luke respected that.
once the gilmore girls left, you went over to the counter to get another coffee to go, and luke smiled as he turned around and noticed it was you.
“hey, another coffee?” he asked.
“to go please,” you nodded, and he handed it to you, exchanging it for the mug you’d had. “call me later?” you whispered, though the diner was pretty empty, and he nodded, before you walked out of the store.
it was a few days later, and you were walking into the diner to grab a bite to eat. you put your headphones on but didn’t turn on your walkman so you could still hear as you walked inside and sat in the corner, luke holding up a finger to let you know he would be with you in a minute. you heard the door open and watched lorelai walk in and sit at the counter across from luke. you felt guilty for eavesdropping, but soon realized what the conversation was about and decided it did (slightly) pertain to you.
“hey, good party yesterday,” he greeted her, and you remembered him mentioning last night that he’d gone to help her fix something at a party her club was hosting.
“yeah, not bad”, she agreed with a smile.
“i like the new look it was very high class substitute teacher.”
“exactly what i was going for.”
“coffee?” he asked.
“oh, to go,” she answered, and luke switched the mug he’d placed in front of her for a paper cup. “hey luke, i feel a little weird even mentioning this to you-“ she began.
“what?”
“well yesterday i saw you talking to ava you know she’s in my booster club?”
“yeah i know who she is,” he replied, and you wondered what she was getting at.
“so anyhow, i saw you guys talking alone and it seemed kind of private and she mentioned earlier that you didn’t make her you know - gag,” she emphasized the word before continuing. “so I just figured you guys were making some sort of plans to hang out and see the thing is i just think it would be a little weird if you started dating a chilton mom.” you sat dumbfounded on the other side of the diner and luke raised his eyebrows slightly as she rambled on. “i know i have no right to say anything to you, but it’s just if you did date her - well i’m in the booster club with her which means i’ll hear things and i don’t know it’s just- i’d like to keep that chilton life separate from my stars hollow life so if there’s anyway that you could not date her, that would be really great,” she finished with a smile and a tap of her fingers on the counter top.
you sat in disbelief in your seat, still not daring to look their way as you wondered if it might have been better to not listen to the conversation after all.
“boy i tell you, you’ve got nerve,” he replied, sounding less than impressed with her speech.
“okay, uh w-“ she stuttered. “well i know this is your private business-“
“it is my private business.”
“you don’t see any validity to my side at all?” she asked.
“i am a grown man. you cannot tell me who to date to date,” he insisted.
“i’m not telling you who to date, i’m telling you who not to date,” she argued.
“you can’t tell me that either!”
“look-“ she began but he interrupted her.
“i will date who i like and if that screws with your plans, then i’m sorry - and if you don’t wanna hear things then don’t listen.”
“but-“
“if you don’t like it, you can just deal with it!” he said, and you weren’t sure you had ever heard him use that tone before.
“okay! i’ll just deal with it!,” she replied.
“good.”
“i just thought that if something was going to affect our friendship in some way that you might care about that because if the situation was reversed then i would care about that but that’s me! so go ahead date her!” she said, standing up, obviously offended. “marry her! make her mrs.backwards baseball cap - live happily ever after. see if i care!” lorelai flapped her arm around as she began walking out of the diner. “and by the way, I wasn’t asking her out,” luke informed her. “i was giving her directions for the quickest way back to hartford. it was very romantic. i said you take a right at deerfield and you catch the I-5 and you take it south. oh man, hot stuff!” he explained.
“that is so typical of you!”
“what?” he said, and you could recognize by his voice that he was rolling his eyes.
“that is not the quickest way back to hartford. everybody knows that you take main to cherry to linwood and then grab the 11. everybody knows that luke - everybody apparently but you!” she said, and her voice wavered as if she was getting emotional.
“and just for the record, not that it’s any of your business at all, i’m seeing someone. don’t worry she’s not one of the snobs in your chilton club so you won’t have to hear about it!”
you were glad you didn’t have a coffee yet or you probably would spat it out in surprise, and you wished more than anything that you had been able to see the look or lorelais face. you had nothing against her, but you did agree she had severely overstepped here.
“well that’s great! i’m so happy for you!” she spat angrily, and stormed out of the diner. thankfully there hadn’t been many people inside eating to hear the conversation, or luke’s confession of having a girlfriend. you decided you weren’t as concerned with people finding out anymore. you were happy with luke and that’s what was most important.
“hey,” luke greeted quietly as he appeared next to your table with a mug and coffee pot.
“hey,” you smiled up at him.
“how much did you hear?” he asked sheepishly, pouring you drink.
“all of it,” you admitted. “i’m sorry.”
“you don’t have to apologize. i’m sorry i told her without asking i just-“
“hey,” you put your hand on his softly. “i’m not mad. i guess the cats kinda out of the bag though.”
“no one knows it’s you,” he pointed out.
“it’s a small town - how long do you think it’ll take them to figure it out?” you laughed.
“yeah i guess so.”
“so, this chilton mom-“ you teased.
“don’t start,” he rolled his eyes, but smiled. “you’re really okay with people knowing about us?” he asked, and you nodded.
“yeah, i am,” you decided. “are you?”
“yeah, i guess i am,” he agreed, and you smiled.
“good.”
“good,” you beamed, and luke walked back behind the counter. you thought he had gone back to work, but he returned with another mug of coffee and sat down across from you.
“mind if i join you?” he teased, and you were surprised.
“are you…taking a break?”
“yeah,” he agreed.
“you? luke danes? are taking a break-“
“shut up before i change my mind?” he said playfully and you smiled, sipping your coffee.
“deal.”

family line - luke danes
Tumblr media
luke danes x fem!reader
summary: things get a little complicated when your boyfriends nephew comes to stay with him
warnings: smoking, family trouble, a bit of angst, mention of cheating but it isn’t happening?, language, readers parents are 💀
word count: 3k (this was supposed to be short)
as you woke up in bed, you rolled over to find luke’s side of the bed empty, and squinted at the clock on his nightstand; you’d slept in.
“oh crap,” you hurried to get dressed and presentable before heading downstairs to work. as you walked in, you noticed luke was on the phone, and he didn’t sound too happy with whoever he was talking to. lorelai was behind the counter grabbing donuts and putting them in a bag, while a group of boy scouts waited in line.
“okay fine,” he said loudly. “do what you want- make the arrangements. now i’m working, we’ll finish this later!” he hung up the phone with a clang.
“is everything okay?” lorelai asked, and you gave luke a worried look as you tied an apron around your waist.
“do either of you have a sister?” he asked.
“uhm, no.”
“no,” you agreed. in the six months you had been with luke, family had never really come up as a topic of dicussion; and that was more than okay with you.
“i do!” one of the boy scouts piped up.
“you have my sympathies,” luke sighed, and disappeared into the back.
“here, i’ll ring you through,” you offered to lorelai, who happily cut in front of the line.
“do you know what that was all about?” she asked, and you shook your head.
“no idea,” you answered honestly, telling her the total for the donuts as rory pestered her to hurry up.
after helping the boy scouts order and pay for their food, you went to find luke, who was sitting in the storage room organizing cans on the shelf.
“hey, sorry i was late,” you said softy.
“that’s okay, it was quiet this morning. i thought i’d let you sleep in,” he replied.
“when is it your turn to sleep in?” you teased.
“never.”
“that’s what i thought,” you sighed. “i take it that wasn’t a customer calling to place an order?”
“no,” he sighed. “it was my sister. her son - jess, my nephew is gonna stay with me for a while.”
“is your sister okay?”
“define okay,” he replied, and you gave him a look. “nothing happened to her, she just can’t control him anymore. he’s getting into trouble and she’s given up taking care of him, so she’s sending him here.”
“i see,” you nodded.
“you’re mad i didn’t ask you,” he suggested, and you shook your head.
“no, luke of course not. he’s your family, and it’s your apartment not mine,” you disagreed. “i think it’s nice that you want to help him, and your sister.”
“but?”
“but what?” you asked.
“there’s a but,” he insisted, and you sighed.
“but,” you exaggerated, raising an eyebrow. “are you sure you’re ready for this kind of responsibility?”
“you don’t think i can do it?” he asked, stopping his shelf organizing to look at you.
“it’s not that i don’t think you can, of course i do. i just - think it might be a little more difficult than you’re expecting, thats all. so if you need any help-“
“i’ll be fine,” he insisted.
“okay.”
“but thank you,” he added, kissing your forehead softly, before walking back out to help a customer who’d been ringing the service bell.
“you better be on fire or else calm down; i’m on my way!” he called, and the ringing stopped.
you sighed, wondering if luke knew what he was getting himself into.
you only worked half days at the diner so you decided to give luke some space and go back to your house for a while, tidying up a bit since you’d been at luke’s the night before.
flopping down on the couch, you scrolled through the tv channels looking for something to watch, but failed to find anything that interested you.
after making some lunch and doing some chores around the house, you went out to buy some groceries and stopped by the diner to see how luke was doing just after dinner.
“hey,” you smiled, the bell above the door altering him to your presence.
“hey, back already?”
“i’m just passing by. i’m going to the grocery store - do you need me to grab anything for you while i’m there?” you asked, but he shook his head.
“nah i think i got everything all stocked up earlier.”
“is he here already?” you asked.
“yeah, i picked him up from the bus stop an hour ago. you might run into him while you’re out and about.”
“he went out already?” you asked.
“yeah, i think he wanted to uh… see the town,” luke sounded unsure.
“honey-“
“it’s fine, i’m sure he just needs some time to get used to being here. that’s all.”
“you’re right,” you agreed. “not to go into the gorey details but i’ve been in his place before and it’s not easy. no matter how great the person you’re staying with is,” you held his hand on the counter for a second, and he looked like he wanted to ask what you meant, but just smiled instead.
“thanks. i’ll see you later?”
“i was thinking i’d give you guys some space - let him settle in on his own for at least the first night. i’ll see you tomorrow though?” you offered, and he nodded in agreement.
your mind was distracted as you shopped for a few things at the store; luke’s nephew being in town was bringing up some memories that you’d spent years trying to forget. memories of your own adolescence. you just hoped things were easier for luke and jess than they had been for you.
it was nearly eleven at night when there was a knock on the door. after a quick glance through the window, you opened the door to see luke standing there.
“hey - what’s going on is everything okay?”
“uh yeah, sure,” he replied, walking past you and into the house, and you shut the door, walking into the living room to find him sitting on the couch.
“luke?”
“yeah.”
“shouldn’t you be at home with jess? i thought you guys were going to hang out?”
“yeah, uh he went out.”
“he went out?”
“yeah. i think i scared him off,” he sighed, and you took a seat next to him, placing a hand reassuringly on his knee.
“what happened?”
“nothing - lorelai invited me to bring him by for dinner tomorrow, so he can meet her and rory, and he asked if i wanted to play poker and then left,” he shrugged.
“ahh i see.”
“see what?” he asked, and you sighed.
“when i was 17, i got into a lot of trouble - like jess. my parents - may they rot in hell - were assholes who hated me and sent me to live with my aunt. lovely woman - had no idea what to do with me.”
“you’re saying i have no idea what i’m doing?”
“i’m saying, it doesn’t matter if you do everything right, sometimes a kid like that has to decide to come around on their own.”
“why didn’t you ever tell me your parents were dead?”
“i guess it never came up,” you shrugged.
“i’m sorry.”
“don’t be,” you shook your head. “the only thing they ever gave me was the ability to lie about where i was going and which floorboards to step on so they didn’t catch me sneaking out. i’m better off without them.”
“i had no idea.”
“i don’t really talk about them, you had no way to know. i’m okay now. my life is better than i ever imagined it could be, and i have you in part to thank for it,” you kissed his cheek softly, and he wrapped his arm around you, pulling you to lean against his side.
“well i’m glad i could be of service,” he kissed you softly.
“jess will come around, luke. just give him some time. my first night after my parents sent me away i stole a car and lived in it for a week.”
“really?” he asked, looking nervous as if he thought jess might do the same.
“no,” you laughed and he relaxed. “but it did take me a while to settle in.”
“is it a bad time to mention that i told lorelai you would come to dinner tomorrow?”
“of course i’ll be there,” you smiled, snuggling into his side after pressing another soft kiss to his lips.
“i should probably get going in case he comes back to the apartment. he doesn’t have a key.”
“you didn’t give me a key?” you asked with a slight laugh.
“he said he didn’t need one,” luke shrugged.
“ah - you have a locksmith on your hands.”
“you think he can pick locks?” he asked.
“it’s not that hard-“ you raised your hands as he shor you a disapproving glance. “kidding.”
“very funny,” he rolled his eyes playfully. “i really should get home.”
“five more minutes?” you asked, clinging to him tighter so he couldn’t leave the couch.
“okay,” he conceded. “five minutes.”
“hey, perfect timing!” lorelai greeted as you stood with luke and jess at her front door. “sookie is about to break the record for the most food served outside of the roman empire.”
“sounds great,” luke replied.
“sure does,” jess agreed. though far less sincerely. the introduction between you and luke’s nephew had gone about as well as you’d expected, but you tried to remember how you felt each time your aunt brought home someone new, so you weren’t taking anything he said too personally.
“so, come on in,” lorelai offered, and jess followed her into the house, looking at some pictures on the wall before finding his way to rory’s room after being introduced to sookie and jackson.
everyone got ready to sit down at the table, rory explaining that jess was just grabbing a soda, before you realized you didn’t have a drink and went to grab one. jess was no where to be seen when you got in there, and you stepped outside to find him on the porch with a beer bottle, which he opened with the railing of the porch.
“not hungry?” you asked, holding your hand out for him to hand over the beer, which he did with a sigh.
“not really,” he agreed.
“don’t worry - i won’t tell anyone about the beer, just don’t let lorelai catch you doing it again.”
“thanks, you’re my hero,” he said sarcastically. “you gonna make me come back inside?” he asked, and you shook your head.
“no, if i was you i wouldn’t want to be in there either to be honest,” you sighed. “lorelai is trying to be nice but all this can be … kind of overwhelming.”
“yeah,” he mumbled.
“did the party move out here and no one bothered to tell us?” lorelai asked, emerging from the kitchen door.
“i’ll be right in, i think jess wants to get some fresh air,” you said, pretty sure she wasn’t gonna like that answer.
“sookie made you a grilled cheese if you don’t like pot roast,” she offered in a sing song voice.
“wow. if i’d have known that-“ jess said mockingly. you knew lorelai was only trying to help luke, but you had a feeling that she was just going to make things worse.
“you really don’t want to be here,” she gathered.
“what gave you that idea?” he teased.
“look, i’ve done this whole act before - but you’ve got a really good thing here with luke, he’s a really great guy. he really wants to take care of you and make things right for you. you’re incredibly lucky to have him,” lorelai went on and on, and even you felt awkward, taking a step back to sit on the porch swing.
“lorelai-“ you started to tell her to tone it down a little, but she ignored you. you knew luke didn’t want her meddling in the situation, him being very much an ‘if i want help i’ll ask for it’ and then never ask type of guy.
“if you give this situation half a chance, you might be suprised at how good it can be, and how much you like living here, and how good it feels to have someone like luke that you can really depend on.”
“that’s funny, i thought she,” he pointed to you. “was his girlfriend. are you sleeping with him too, or something?” jess asked, and though it was inappropriate to say the least, you barely stifled a laugh. it sounded exactly like something you would’ve said when you were his age, and lorelai was definitely laying it on pretty thick about luke.
“excuse me?”
“the whole starry eyed ‘you’re so much better off, just give it a chance’ speech. you’re either really naive, or you’re getting some,” he said, before turning to you. “sorry this might be how you find out you’re getting cheated on.”
“jess, come on-“ you sighed.
“this is my house, and i choose how i get talked to in it.”
“you know, you don’t know anything about me, or my life, or my mom, or luke, so why don’t you doctor laura someone else.”
“i’m going inside, you better not have taken that beer from my fridge,” she pointed to the bottle you had set on the table, grabbing it on her way inside and slamming the porch door.
“that wasn’t very neighborly now was it?” jess mumbled, more to himself than to you, you decided.
“hey, i’m not gonna give you a speech or anything-“
“sounds like you are.”
“she means well, even if she can be a bit… much, sometimes,” you said, crossing your arms over your chest.
“if i have to hear about how perfect my life is now one more time i might go stand in traffic,” he huffed, and to your surprise, he sat down on the opposite end of the porch swing, the chain creaking as he did.
“it’s not worth your time; no one here drives fast enough to do any damage,” you offered, and he almost smiled.
jess pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it, earning a side eye from you, and he sighed as he handed it over. you put it out in a small puddle of water on the porch and tossed it in the bin outside the kitchen door, before you heard luke and lorelai arguing in the kitchen.
“they fight like a married couple too,” jess added, and you laughed.
“i can’t disagree with you.”
“you sure they’re not-“
“they’re not. don’t bring it up again,” you advised, and he raised his hands in mock surrender as luke stormed out of the gilmore house.
“let’s go,” he said, looking at the two of you, and jess didn’t hesitate to get up and start walking, and in that moment you were just as eager as he was to get away from the gilmore house.
“i think i should go home. call me tomorrow?”
“you’re ditching me?” luke asked.
“no, i just think me being here isn’t really helping, and maybe you guys need some time to talk. i’ll come to yours if you want me to.”
“he’s had more of a conversation with you than he has with me,” luke argued, and you sighed, looking down at your feet. “i’m sorry, you’re right. i’ll see you tomorrow.”
“okay. i love you,” you said, giving him a kiss before he hurried to catch up with jess, and you started your walk home.
for the second time that week, luke showed up at your house unexpectedly, and you opened the door to let him inside. it was your day off work so you hadn’t talked to him since last night, and he still seemed pretty upset.
“hey, what’s up?” you asked.
“i just pushed him in a lake.”
“what?” you asked, raising your eyebrows.
“jess. i got this call from taylor that he thinks jess stole the bridge money and i went for confront him and he was being impossible and i just pushed him in. this is bad,” he trailed off mumbling to himself.
“hey maybe it’s not as bad as you think it is,” you tried to calm him down. “how good of a swimmer is he?”
“he’s fine,” he sighed. “he’s wet. i just - i lost it. you’re right; i am in so far over my head i can’t even see my own hat.”
“have you tried turning it around?” you teased, and he gave you a look.
“what was I thinking why did I say yes to this?”
“because you wanted to help him.”
“raising a kid - i don’t even like kids! they’re always sticky, like they’ve got jam on their hands. even if there’s no jam in the house, somehow they’ve always got jam on their hands. i’m not the right guy to deal with that. i have no patience for jam hands!” he spiralled.
“luke, honey. slow down,” you shushed him. “he’s a teenager, not a toddler, so i think you probably don’t have to worry about the jam thing, and you can absolutely do this. but it’s going to take more than two days and an air mattress for you guys to become best friends.”
“i swear i’m gonna kill liz,” he interrupted.
“liz isn’t here. jess is, and you cannot give up on him yet. i know this is not going how you planned but imagine how he must feel.”
“maybe you could talk to him - he doesn’t hate you like he hates me.”
“he does not hate you, luke. he doesn’t know you,” you corrected. “if you want me to talk to him i can try but i don’t know how much that will help. i can’t parent him for you. he’s living under your roof not mine.”
“you’re right,” he sighed.
“as always,” you teased, kissing him on the cheek. “do you want to stay for dinner since you’re here?”
“nah i gotta go find a gnome.”
“excuse me?”
“babette’s gnome - long story.”
“i don’t want to know,” you laughed, and he pulled you into a hug.
“thank you, for talking me out of the crazy tree.”
“you’re welcome. he just needs more time to adjust - his whole life got flipped upside down overnight,” you sympathized. “and so did yours. you need to adjust to this too. just - try not to push him in anymore lakes?” you suggested as luke stepped out the door.
“no promises,” he smiled, before leaving to go find the missing gnome, and you shook your head as you closed the door behind him. at least things were never boring in stars hollow.

luke danes x fem!reader
summary: after a bad dream, luke helps calm you down
warnings: reader has a nightmare but that’s all
words count: 0.4k
“hello?” luke’s voice grumbled, deeper than usual since like any normal person would be at two am, he had been asleep.
“luke?” you said softly.
“that’s who you called - in the middle of the night i might add.”
“i’m so sorry, i just-“ you sighed, pulling the blankets tighter around yourself as you sat upright against the headboard of your bed. “i had … uh..”
“a bad dream?” he asked sincerely, and you felt stupid; like a child telling their parents they spilled something on the carpet or broke a vase.
“it’s stupid i’m sorry for bothering you,” you replied.
“no, it’s okay. do you..want to talk about it?” he asked, sounding a little unsure.
“okay,” you agreed. “all the doors in my house kept unlocking and i thought someone was trying to break in and normally i’m okay with living alone but i got really scared and i kept running back and forth and re-locking the doors but they kept opening-“ you rambled at the speed of light.
“whoa slow down. you thought someone was trying to break in?”
“yes - well in my dream,” you said. “i don’t know if anyone is trying to break in to my house in real life.”
“are your doors locked?” he asked, and you felt yourself getting scared again.
“i think so,” you answered nervously.
“do you want me to come down there and check the house for you?”
“you don’t have to do that luke,” you assured him.
“really, i don’t mind.”
“it’s okay, i’ll go check just- stay on the phone with me?”
“sure thing,” he said, and though you were still alone, you felt infinitely safer with him on the line with you. “take a weapon with you,” he suggested.
“i have a baseball bat.”
“good girl.”
you walked through the house quietly, and were relieved to find that both the front and back door were locked, and you relayed the message to luke.
“windows too?” he asked.
“windows too,” you confirmed, sitting down on the couch with a sigh of relief. “hey, i’m sorry for bothering you over nothing.”
“it wasn’t nothing. you were scared.”
“over nothing.”
“over the very real idea of someone breaking in. don’t worry about it,” he said, and you were pretty sure he was smiling by the sound of his voice.
“thank you, luke.”
“anytime. you heading back to bed now?” he asked, and you yawned, pulling a blanket over yourself.
“yeah, i think so. you?”
“yeah, me too. i’ll see you at the diner later?”
“of course. and thank you again. i owe you one,” you smiled sleepily.
“don’t mention it. sweet dreams.”
“goodnight luke,” you smiled, hanging up the phone and curling into a ball on the couch, where you quickly fell asleep.

just tonight - luke danes
Tumblr media
luke danes x reader
summary: lorelai’s engagement party brings out some feelings for both you and luke
warnings: drinking, a bit of angst, suggestive content
word count: 1.8k
there must have been a thousand pink and purple flowers decorating the town square, weaved intricately around the gazebo as the twinkling light and stars lit up the night sky. it was lorelai and max’s engagement party, and so far it seemed to be a huge success, everyone in town was here enjoying the food and the music.
well, almost everyone.
as you walked around the party, you couldn’t help but notice that luke was absent. you glanced across the street and saw lights inside the small restaurant, and before you could stop yourself you felt you feet walking in that direction. you and luke were friends, but you would be lying if you said you didn’t feel something more for the man. a lot more. however it was unfortunately obvious to everyone except luke and lorelai that they had a thing for eachother. although, she was marrying someone else, so maybe it was just luke.
“hey,” you greeted as you walked through the door, and he looked up at the sound of the bell ringing.
“hey, i thought i flipped the closed sign around.”
“you did,” you smiled, sitting down across from him as he refilled ketchup bottles. “i came in anyway.”
“awesome, remind me to lock the door next time”, he teased, and you smiled.
“it’s quite the party out there. i thought i’d take a break - get away from all the lovey dovey stuff for a minute.”
“understandable,” he groaned. you knew he was happy for lorelai, but as much as it wasn’t your thing, a party that big really wasn’t luke’s scene.
“mind if i keep you company for a bit?”
“would you leave if i said i did?”
“probably not,” you replied, and he smiled, shaking his head.
“i’ll make coffee.”
“actually, since it’s after business hours, do you have any beer?” you asked, and he nodded, disappearing the the kitchen and returning with two glass bottles, placing one on the counter in front of you and keeping the other for himself.
“they look really happy,” you sighed happily, staring out the window.
“that’s good,” luke replied.
“are you okay?” you asked.
“fine,” he mumbled, wiping the counter with a towel, avoiding eye contact.
“are you sure?”
“yes, why wouldn’t i be?” he asked.
“because your best friend, who many people believe you have a thing for-“
“i do not have a thing for her,” he interrupted.
“i didn’t say you did, i said many people believe-“
“like who?” he threw the towel over his shoulder and crossed his arms, finally looking up at you. your eyes met and you gave him a sympathetic look.
“lots of people, luke,” you said softly.
“like you?” he asked, and you shrugged.
“maybe-“
“look we’re just friends! that’s it!” he insisted.
“okay! i believe you!” you raised your hands in defeat.
“good. can we talk about something else?”
“sure,” you nodded, but your mind was blank of anything to talk about as you watched him take a sip from his beer.
an hour went by, as did a few more beers each, and you and luke sat at the counter next to eachother, talking about whatever. you found it so easy to talk to luke about little things like what you did that day, how things were going at the diner, but when it came to talking about your feelings, you were about as good at it as he was.
“so i guess you’re gonna ask me to go out and enjoy the festivities?” luke asked, and you shook your head.
“i wasn’t, actually,” you disagreed, giggling happily as he shot you a glance that told you he didn’t believe you for a second.
“why not? isn’t that why you came in here?” he said, finishing up with the ketchup bottles and walking around to put them back on each table.
“maybe i just want to hang out with you,” you said honestly, and he nearly knocked over one of the ketchup bottles.
“what? why would you want to do that?”
“because i-“
the alcohol had weakened the walls you’d built around yourself, and you nearly confessed how you felt right then and there. you weren’t sure if you would have regretted it, but it didn’t matter.
before you could answer, the bell above the door sounded, and you both looked over to see the woman of the hour walk in.
“hey,” lorelai greeted, and you gave her a smile. she really did look beautiful in her dress. she looked happy.
“hey,” luke replied. “why aren’t you at your party?” he asked as she walked up the the counter.
“aww that’s funny, i was about to ask you the same thing,” she replied, and luke glanced over at you.
“i’ll see you later?” you asked him, and he nodded, his eyes going back to lorelai rather quickly, and your heart felt a little stab.
“is this seat taken?” a voice made you jump in your seat, and luke smiled down at you.
“no, all yours,” you smiled, scooting over on the bench where you’d been watching the party.
“thanks,” he sighed, his leg brushing against yours softly as he sat down.
“so lorelai managed to convince you to join the fun, huh?” you teased.
“maybe i just decided i wanted to come out here,” he argued playfully.
“please, luke,” you rolled your eyes. “you would stand in traffic if she asked you to,” you said without meaning to, and the look on his face told you that you’d gone too far.
“what does that mean?” he asked, stiffening in his seat.
“i’m sorry, but come on luke!” you pleaded. “you don’t have to lie to me, i’ve seen the way you look at her.”
“and how is that?” he demanded, and you felt your emotions bubbling over like a pot someone had forgotten on the stove.
“the same way i look at you,” you said without meaning too, and your heart pounded so hard you thought it was going to jump out of your chest and fall at your feet.
“you’re drunk,” he dismissed, staring at you in disbelief.
“no, luke,” you sighed. “well, a little - but that’s not the point. is it so hard to believe that someone might like you?” you asked.
“yes.”
“why?”
“i don’t know- i’m… me,” he said, his face scrunching up, and you giggled softly. “okay, yeah - you’re drunk. let’s get you home.”
“luke, wait,” you protested as he stood up and grabbed your hand, dragging you off the bench.
“come on,” he insisted, but you planted your feet, slowing him down until he stopped and turned towards you.
“please, luke.”
“what?” he sighed, and you grabbed his other hand so you were now holding both of them.
“i mean it,” you looked up at him, his eyes looking down into yours. “i like you, a lot.”
“remind me never to give you alcohol again-“ he joked.
“i’m serious, luke. you’re not listening to me.”
“what do you want me to say?” he asked softly.
“i don’t… i don’t know,” you admitted, your head starting to feel funny from the alcohol, or maybe from being so close to him, you weren’t sure.
“let me take you home,” he whispered, and you nodded, letting him drop your one hand to lead you down the sidewalk towards your house.
neither of you noticed the eyes on you from back at the square, lorelai smiling at the two of you as she dance with max.
“here you are, your highness,” like teased, as he escorted you through your house and to your bedroom door.
“thank you, my knight in flannel armour,” you giggled. “hey, i’m sorry about…“
“about what?” he interrupted, leaning against the doorframe.
“getting all… emotional. i know you hate that.”
“i do,” he said, but he smiled. “but i forgive you.”
“thank you,” you sighed, wrapping your arms around him in a hug. luke’s body stiffened for a second, but then he relaxed, wrapping his arms around you in return. “luke?”
“yeah?” he whispered, and you pulled back to look at him, his arms around your body still holding you close.
“would you kiss me?” you asked, and he was silent for a second.
“are you asking me if i would, or are you asking me to?”
“i’m asking you to,” you decided, and he did. he leaned forward and his lips met yours in a soft kiss, which quickly turned messy. his hands moved to your waist, and your fingers gripped the front of his shirt tightly as your teeth grazed his bottom lip.
luke’s hand held the side of your face as your hands made their way to his belt, but he stopped you.
“wait,” he muttered softly, and you stared up at him.
“you don’t …want to..?” you mumbled.
“it’s not that,“ he said, but didn’t elaborate.
“do you love her?”
“who?”
“lorelai,” you asked in a tone that implied it was obvious.
“no,” he said unconvincingly, and you raised an eyebrow. “i don’t know. we’ve always just been friends and now she’s getting married to someone else. geez you know i don’t do the whole feelings thing and you’ve had me talking about it all night,” he said with a short laugh. “it doesn’t matter.”
“it does matter.”
“not really. can we go back to talking about this?” he gestured between the two of you, hands still holding eachother close.
“okay. so you don’t want to sleep with me?” you asked nervously.
“it’s not that i don’t want to,” he sighed. “ask me when you haven’t been drinking, okay? and give me a little time to figure…” he pointed to his heart. “this thing out.” he asked, and while you were still a little disappointed, you knew you would appreciate it in the morning.
“okay,” you agreed. “thank you, luke.”
“for what?” he smiled.
“for always looking out for me,” you smiled back, and he kissed your forehead softly.
“don’t mention it. seriously any more sappy stuff tonight and i’ll lose my mind,” he said, and you laughed. “alright, let’s get you to bed.”
as if on cue, you yawned, and he pushed you towards the bed, pulling back the blanket so you could lay down, before tucking you in.
“luke?” you said, grabbing his wrist before he could walk away.
“yeah?” he asked.
“stay?” you pleaded.
he sighed softly, but kicked his boots off, muttering a soft ‘okay’ under his breath before he got into bed next to you.
“but no funny business,” he ordered, and you smiled, curling into his side.
“promise,” you agreed, before leaning over and kissing his cheek quickly. “thank you, luke,” you mumbled sleepily, resting your head on his chest. his arms wrapped around you, holding you close as you drifted off to sleep.
“anything for you.”

colour me blue - luke danes

luke danes x fem!reader
warnings: drinking, age gap maybe (no ages given but luke is around 35 in season 1)
summary: you help luke paint the diner after he gets stood up
word count: 1.9k
you were in a particularly good mood this evening as you walked through town, even with the chill in the air nipping at you through your jacket. you had the day off work since luke, your boss, had closed the diner to do some work inside. despite his gruff exterior, you and luke had been friends for almost as long as you’d lived in stars hollow. you moved to the small town a year ago after a bad breakup and it took some time, but you had become quite close with luke. when you needed a job, he offered to let you help out at the diner for a few hours a week, and after a while he just got used to having you around.
as you approached the diner on your way through town, you were surprised to see luke standing outside the door, looking just about as cold as you were; or worse.
“luke?” you asked as you walked up to him.
“hey,” he replied, his hands in the pockets of his faded jeans, and a vest overtop of one of his many flannel shirts.
“what are you doing out here? shouldn’t you be painting?” you asked, peering inside at the cans of paint he’d brought in earlier.
“uh, yeah just - getting some fresh air, you know…. the fumes and all,” he gestured to the air in front of his face, and you gave him a look.
“luke, you haven’t started - all the paint is exactly where it was this morning and all the walls are the same colour,” you pointed out, not sure why he was being dishonest.
“i started!” he argued. “i took everything off the walls.”
“you did that earlier,” you reminded him.
“i didn’t say when i started,” he shrugged, looking at his shoes.
“luke, what’s going on? i thought you said lorelai was coming to help you paint tonight.”
“she is. was. she’s uh… not feeling good.”
“luke, you don’t have to lie to me. i thought you guys had a date?,” you said, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“she ditched me, there, happy?” he grumbled, rolling his eyes. “and it wasn’t a date,” he insisted.
“no, i wouldn’t say happy,” you replied. something big must have come up for lorelai to stand him up. they were best friends, and you were pretty convinced they might be into eachother. you could see why she’d like him; despite the grumpy personality. he was tall, handsome, and kind. you’d kill to have someone look at you they way he looked at her. “come on, let’s go inside, it’s cold.”
“nah, just go home. it’s okay,” he tried to brush it off, but i was obvious that he was hurt by her not showing up. you couldn’t imagine standing up a guy like him, whether it had been a date or not.
“luke come on. hey, i’ll help you paint,” you offered, pushing his tall frame towards the door.
“no, you don’t want to -“
“i do, now come on, before i lose my toes please?” you pleaded, giving him your best puppy dog eyes. he caved instantly; everytime.
“alright fine, let’s go,” he put his hand on your lower back, ushering you inside and away from the frigid air.
“okay, now i think the fumes are actually getting to me, let’s take a break,” luke suggested, pinching the bridge of his nose. it had been about two hours of painting, and you were indeed ready to rest for a minute or two.
“my arms are tired,” you sighed, and sat down on the floor, your back against the front of the bar counter; all the chairs had been stacked to make room for painting. luke took a seat on the floor next to you, and you bumped his shoulder with yours.
“what?” he asked, trying to sound annoyed but failing.
“it’s gonna look really nice when it’s done luke.”
“you think so?” he asked, and you nodded, turning your head to face him.
“if you want i can help you put all the stuff back on the walls after.”
“you’ve done enough to help me, you don’t have to-“
“luke, i know i don’t have to. i want to,” you assured him, and he smiled. “why are too looking at me like that?”
“you have-“ he reached his hand towards you, brushing his thumb across your cheekbone softly. “-paint on you face.”
“really? well-“ you reached over to the paint tray on the floor near you and swiped your finger through the green paint, before wiping it on luke’s nose. “now so do you,” you smiled.
luke shook his head, but a soft grin remained plastered on his face, his gaze soft as he looked at you.
forget the way he looked at lorelai, the way he looked at you sure was something special; not that you’d noticed.
“you’re in for it now,” he reached for his paintbrush on the table, giving you time to stand up to attempt and escape, but he was faster than you, wrapping his arms around you from behind.
“luke, wait i’m sorry!” you laughed, but it was too late. he swiped the paintbrush across the front of your t shirt; it was one of his his he’d given you to wear so you didn’t get paint on your clothes, coincidentally.
“okay, now we’re even,” he smiled. “told ya you shouldn’t wear that nice shirt of yours. it’s your favourite i would hate for something to happen to it.”
“how did you know it’s my favourite?” you asked, and he flushed slightly, a panicked look crossing his face.
“i don’t know, you wear it a lot and it looks nice on you, so i figured it must be your favourite.”
“it looks nice on me?” you teased, and his cheeks turned a darker shade of pink.
“yeah - nice.”
“thanks,” you said genuinely. it was your favourite shirt, you just hadn’t expected him to know that.
“you’re welcome,” he replied.
“here, hang on,” you giggled softly, and his eyes watched you as you weaved through the plastic sheets and furniture until you were behind the counter. you rummaged around until you found a paper towel and gestured for luke to lean over the countertop.
“what are you-“ he asked, as you grabbed his chin in her hand, before wiping the paint on his nose. “thanks,” he mumbled, missing your touch on his face as soon as it was gone.
“we better get back to work. we’ll be here forever at this rate,” you sighed.
“yeah,” he said softly. “hey careful,” he said in a worried tone as you stood on a chair to reach the top of the wall. his large hands landed on your hips, holding you steady, and you realized you liked his hands being there.
“thanks,” you breathed, the chair leg wobbling slightly under you.
“yeah well, if you fall and break your neck it’ll be an insurance nightmare-“
“luke?”
“what?”
“thanks,” you repeated, and he stopped rambling. “help me down?” you asked, and he held you steady as you stepped down onto the floor. when both feet were firmly planted on solid ground, you expected him to let go, but his fingertips lingered on your waist.
“you can let go now,” you smiled, but he didn’t, he took a step closer to you instead, leaving only a few inches between your bodies. “luke..”
“thank you, for… helping me,” he said softly, like he found it difficult to say the words.
“you’re welcome,” you smiled. “besides, you never know, maybe it was all just an elaborate plan to get you to hang out with me,” you teased.
“you could’ve asked,” he replied.
“asked what?”
“asked me to hang out with you. if that’s what you wanted.”
“yeah?” you asked nervously, reaching up to fiddle with one of the buttons on his shirt.
“yeah,” he said, barely above a whisper as he stared down at you with that look in his eyes again. a look that said i’m crazy about you.
“what would you have said?” you asked, and he smiled.
“you know i can’t say no to you,” luke replied.
“are you sure? because i swear you’ve-“ he interrupted you with a soft kiss, his lips brushing against yours gently before he pulled back. there was a brief silence after, both of you just looking at eachother.
“you should do that again,” you whispered, and he did, deeper this time as he held you close, his arms around your back as you held the front of his shirt. you separated again, and luke rested his forehead on yours, a smile on both of your faces.
“we really should get back to painting…”
“you’re probably right,” he agreed, letting you go reluctantly. “you know when i’ve thought about asking you on a date, painting this place was not what i had in mind.”
“you’ve thought about asking me on a date?” you asked, your cheeks beginning to hurt from smiling so much.
“every damn day.”
the two of you painted for nearly three more hours before you realized the time, and luke insisted you call it a night.
“alright, i think i’ll actually go crazy if i smell paint for another minute. do you want a drink?” he asked, and you nodded, throwing in the metaphorical towel as well.
luke returned with two beers, popping the cap of one before handing it to you and then opening his.
“thanks,” you tapped the bottle against his with a clink, and he smiled. you walked outside to sit on the front step, and luke noticed you shivering almost immediately.
“come here,” he mumbled, putting his arm out for you to lean into his side. you rested your head on his shoulder, warmer already with his body against yours.
“thanks. i had a lot of fun tonight.”
“yeah? well we’ve probably got a few more days of painting left if you want to come back tomorrow…” he offered. “only if you want to though.”
“i’d like that,” you smiled. “what about lorelai? i thought she wanted to help?” you asked, still not sure exactly how the other woman felt about him.
“what about her?” he asked innocently. “it doesn’t seem like it was all that important to her considering she never showed up.”
“luke…” you could tell he was still a bit upset about her ditching their plans.
“i’m sure something important came up or she would’ve came,” he said genuinely.
“yeah you’re right. and you two are…”
“just friends,” he finished your sentence, a slight smile on his face.
“okay. i believe you,” you said, and you did. luke kissed the side of your head reassuringly, and you leaned closer to him.
“so i’ll see you here at seven am then? bright and early so we can get more work done?” he said, and for a second you thought he was serious. the smile on his face told you otherwise.
“can we push it to nine? my boss works me like a dog so i never get to sleep in-“ you teased him.
“hey,” he warned playfully. “it’s weird to think of me as your boss if we’re…. well,” he trailed off.
“you don’t have to be my boss - we could just work together but you’re in charge?” you suggested teasingly.
“so like a boss?”
“yeah,” you smiled, kissing his lips softly. “so nine am?” you asked, and he smiled, his eyes admiring your face again.
“it’s a date.”
