Rhizoctonia Solani can affect potato tubers and plants in many ways. It can attack sprouts when the tubers are starting to grow and if conditions are correct can result in non emergence. It can also reduce root mass which will affect the growth of the plant. There are also many tuber conditions like black scurf, 'elephant skin, tuber cracking and small holes with the distinctive Rhizoctonia mark around the entrance. These can all be small surface marks that would not affect the potatoes marketable qualities right through to full coverage. Anything above 10% skin coverage will reduce a potatoes market value. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum affected potato stem with mycelium. Stems often turn soft and leaves turn yellow and can be confused with blackleg. The stems will become a grey/white colour with a woody look. The mycelium contain sclerotia which survive in the soil over winter.
