one of the best, funniest things about Descendants is that nobody and I mean NOBODY gives a SHIT that Ben suddenly declares love for Mal despite being with Audrey and in fact everyone (except Audrey) immediately just starts dancing along to his singing. the cheerleaders are doing stunts. the mascot lets him ride on his back. and this is all in front of their rival school??? imagine being a Sherwood student and going to that fucking game

like your school’s Chosen Sport team is playing their historic rivals in the CUP game so the whole school turns out to watch it and the other team has decided to basically unleash two kids who have never read a rulebook in their lives on the preps and it is CARNAGE. your rival school wins. and then the fucking CAPTAIN of the rival school’s team, whose parents fucking RUN THE COUNTRY, randomly starts asking the crowd to spell out a word. is it the name of his girlfriend, the head cheerleader? no. it is, in fact, the name of the new kid who you are 90% sure just got released from juvie. and THEN he starts up a karaoke and dance session dedicated to, from what you can see, is an increasingly horrified-looking goth. the head cheerleader has run off crying. no one gives a shit. the cheer squad has formed a fucking pyramid without her. the crowd is cheering. the karaoke has ended and the captain has body-surfed up the bleachers to his new beloved. he once again declares love for her and then - oh, WHAT’S THIS? ex-girlfriend head cheerleader has returned with one of the football players who was literally dancing along to a song about her getting dumped two minutes ago. she announces that he is now her boyfriend and that she doesn’t need the captain’s pity-date. captain asks his new beloved to prom. she is delighted. you are very confused. and very disappointed that you don’t go to Auradon Prep because now you are not going to be able to see how this plays out.

the potential dynamic between uma and audrey is super interesting to me.

imagine uma and audrey are assigned roommates after d3. uma is incredibly busy helping with everyone's transition from the isle, and audrey is recovering from her possession by the scepter and trying to rebuild her reputation. but at the end of the day, they're in their shared room. most often ignoring each other.

they've both got their own opinions of each other - none of them are particularly good. audrey has heard all about uma, and honestly? she's kind of terrified of her.

uma is pretty sure audrey's just another spoiled princess.

but it turns out that rooming with someone teaches you a lot more than you may think.

it teaches uma that audrey smokes, and that she knows how to hide it. it teaches uma that audrey's mother is out of the picture, but her overbearing and, quite frankly, evil grandmother is not. uma learns that audrey is actually really funny.

audrey learns that uma sneaks out a lot. she learns that uma does not trust her, or anyone, for that matter. she learns that uma is really pretty, especially when she’s just come back from the beach and still smells like the ocean.

they learn that they’re both a lot different than they thought. they learn that they enjoy each other’s company.

audrey learns that uma didn’t grow up watching movies on the isle, so she catches her up on all of the “must watch” movies.

uma learns that being a princess is way more painfully boring than she initially thought and that she’s glad she has (almost) no part in it.

uma teaches audrey to sword fight.

audrey teaches uma that acts of kindness don’t always come with strings attached.

they see each other as safe people, as equals, as friends.

When Ursula handed him those deadly little eels, Jay felt uncomfortable with the gift but forced a smile.

When Harry told him that Uma was devastated that she would no longer be able to see Lagan and Derelict, he didn't get why. The eels weren't just sinister. Sometimes it seemed that they looked at him with too much intelligence and sometimes resentment. But Jay offered that Uma could come to his house as many times as she wanted. If they were so important to her, Jay was going to take care of them.

Something changed that day. The distance between him and Harry shortened astronomically. As if Jay had said the right words in the correct order. Suddenly Harry seemed willing to die for him. And the sense of security and belonging was something new to Jay.

With that came Gil, with his bright smile and refreshing comments. Gil seemed to contain the right questions for Jay to slowly sink further into port each day. Because Gil was brave and he wasn't afraid to show what he felt. Jay wanted to be that strong.

Uma took his word for consideration. She appeared at his house with suspicion in her eyes but slowly everything became memories. Jay made her laugh. And Uma showed him that Lagan and Derelict were amazing, smart, and even by releasing them into the sea, they would always go back to Jay because they were loyal. Uma did that. She inspired loyalty. He grew up watching Uma turn from a simple girl to a goddess trapped on the island.

He no longer needed to look out for himself. Jay was no longer alone. And he didn't fear being abandoned.

So, it wasn't difficult to choose where his loyalty rested: On the shoulders of a pirate captain and her boys. Because Harry would die for him. Because Gil made him happy. Because Uma treated him like someone valuable.

Jay obtained an important position in the crew. Watch and protect what was important to his captain.

In return, when Uma said "my boys", she also looked at him, with that wicked smile and that shine of pure pride from the abyss of the sea.

And maybe the island didn't know about love. But apparently, Jay was the best thief out there. Because he had achieved exactly that.
