I friggin’ love ice cream, but most of the options at the store stink. A few months back, Maya introduced me to @thejoeduff and his SUPER easy homemade ice cream recipes. This is a slightly modified version of his chocolate mason jar ice cream (I make sure to specifically use organic heavy cream and cocoa powder, and I use a little less allulose than his recipe calls for) It can be somewhat tricky to find organic whipping cream depending on where you shop and live, but there are several brands out there including Horizon Organic, Organic Valley, and my favorite, @kalonasupernatural This ice cream is SUPER easy to make and only takes 5 minutes to prepare, and 4-6 hours to set in the freezer. I also love that shaking the ice cream is a great arm and shoulder workout. Most importantly, you can avoid all of the less-than-ideal ingredients that run rampant in even the “healthy” store bought options like Natural Flavors, Added Sugar, Sunflower Lecithin, Gums, Wheats, and crummy sweeteners like Malitol. NEW Costco find Erin Baker’s Better Cookies This is another new discovery for us. These cookies are paleo, gluten free, vegan, and non-GMO. But furthermore, the ingredients are just pretty darn clean. We ran out of popcorn kernels the other day 🙊so I ran to the store to see what I could find, because we just had to have popcorn that night. Unfortunately, Mariano’s did not have organic popcorn kernels. I figured we were out of luck, but I went and looked at the pre-packaged section just for the heck of it. I know there are a handful of brands out there doing it right. I was in luck! Spotted this bagged popcorn from @ghcretors, which is a brand I was unfamiliar with until that fateful night at Mariano’s. Most bagged popcorn is non-organic and is almost always popped in cheap, inflammatory, industrial oils like sunflower, corn, or canola oil. Most candles have petroleum byproducts, stabilizers, or harmful dyes in them. In the journey to make our home as toxin-free as possible, we went down the candle rabbit hole and discovered a clear winner with @fontanacandlecompany A little info on traditional candles (scroll down to see how Fontana is different): “Conventional paraffin wax is derived as a byproduct of petroleum, coal, or oil shale and contains controversial and harmful chemicals such as benzene and toulene. Typing “best natural candles” into Google reveals dozens upon dozens of options that are presented as natural and non-toxic, but in reality, most are far from that. Popular among the best natural candle articles that Google search reveals are soy candles - marketed as a healthier alternative to paraffin. While that may be true, what many of those soy candle companies won’t tell you is that they are not 100% soy, as the processing still requires small amounts of paraffin. 70% of non-organic produce sold in the US contains harmful chemical pesticides. Not good. Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes its list of the Dirty Dozen - the twelve product items that rank highest in pesticide contamination based on an analysis of more than 46,075 samples taken by the USDA and the FDA. Some highlights from EWG’s Dirty Dozen ⚠️ More than 90 percent of samples of strawberries, apples, cherries, spinach, nectarines, and leafy greens tested positive for residues of two or more pesticides. ⚠️ A single sample of kale, collard and mustard greens had up to 20 different pesticides. ⚠️ On average, spinach samples had 1.8 times as much pesticide residue by weight as any other crop tested. ⚠️Hot peppers and bell peppers had the most pesticides detected, 115 pesticides in total and 21 more pesticides than the crops with the second highest amount – kale, collard and mustard greens. The Clean Fifteen are the 15 items with the lowest amounts of pesticide residues, according to EWG’s analysis of the most recent USDA data. Some highlights from EWG’s Clean Fifteen: ✅Avocados and sweet corn were the cleanest. Fewer than 2 percent of samples showed any detectable pesticides. ✅The first seven Clean Fifteen crops tested positive for three or fewer pesticides on a single sample. ✅Almost 70 percent of Clean Fifteen fruit and vegetable samples had no pesticide residues. ✅Multiple pesticide residues are extremely rare on Clean Fifteen vegetables.
