Circus Freak
Pairing: Dick Grayson as Robin x Reader
Warnings: I don’t think there are any.
Word Count: 3.4K
Summary: Dick Grayson meets his old childhood friend after year’s of being apart at Haly’s Circus. However, he wishes he didn’t have to keep his identity a secret from her.
A/N:I told @imcarolinashannon about this and I’m pretty sure she’s not even part of the fandom but imma tag her anyway. Also hoo damn this gif always made me feel smn when I was a kid
“There’s been a series of robberies taking place in different countries from reputed tech labs. Nothing major but by the looks of it, they seem to be collecting pieces to finish something.” Robin said, flashing up the pictures of the missing items.
“So? How do you know if it’s the same person?” Asked Artemis and Robin flinched, hoping that the team wouldn’t jump to conclusions.
“Because each robbery has been synchronous with the stops of Haly’s Circus.”
“So, the circus freaks are behind it.”
“They’re not freaks. And you don’t know if they’re behind it or if someone is trying to frame them. Keep an open mind.” He said quickly with a bite to his voice.
“Alright….so what’s the plan of action?”
“So far, the robber has been careful, we don’t know how, but they managed to avoid all the security cameras, so we don’t even have a shadow to go by. We go undercover as new acts. ‘The Dangers’.”
They agreed to the plan and in a day they all found themselves at Haly’s Circus along with Jack, the Ringmaster. He was only too happy to show the ‘Dangers’ around, introducing them to everybody.
So far, no one seemed hostile or like a possible suspect. Which made the true culprit even harder to find.
Robin on the other hand was getting more antsy as the minutes passed. He knew it wouldn’t be a problem if he didn’t take off his mask but he was worried that somebody would recognize him as Dick Grayson, or worse, that he’d find out that the circus was behind the series of robberies.
He knew in his heart that it couldn’t have been. It wasn’t.
But his head was telling him to keep an open mind. Evidence doesn’t lie.
“Are these all the performers?” Roy asked from behind him, the question was clearly directed towards Jack, who just smiled and guided them through the dining cart to where the beds were.
“Just our very own tightrope walker, my daughter (Y/N),” Dick’s heart began to race when he heard your name and he immediately wanted to say it. Like he missed saying it, but he still remained quiet.
Of course, Dick remembered you, you grew up together. As far as he could remember, you had been his first best friend. He remembered the two of you running around and playing with the elephants and your parents chuckling when the two of you insisted that you were going to marry each other.
He remembered kissing you one day while you were hidden under the bleachers and making a secret language with you so you could communicate without anyone else understanding.
He remembered the way you held him the night his parents died and sleeping in his bed that night to make sure he wasn’t crying alone.
And he remembered the way you sobbed your eyes out when he got adopted by Bruce and left the circus.
He never returned to Haly’s after that, there were too many memories from his time with his parents. The wounds were still fresh. He was scared that the one person who mattered to him the most, after his parents, would hate him for abandoning his life there.
A part of him was worried to see you again, but it was easily masked by anticipation and excitement. You wouldn’t be able to recognize him anyway.
Jack walked up to your closed bedroom door and knocked, though it was likely you didn’t hear anything through the loud music and laughter. Dick’s heart soared at the sound of your laughter and squeals.
Jack opened the door and team was finally introduced to you.
Dancing with your best friend to ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’.
Dick grinned wide. Fuck, he had missed you.

“Come here, flower, let me read you.” Karina, the fortune-teller, called out with a motherly smile and you immediately frowned, letting out a pitiful whine that made all the older members chuckle. It was no secret that you hated the readings ever since she told you that something terrible was going to happen to you a few months ago.
You spent the whole week in absolute terror, fearing something awful was going to happen, and because you were so nervous and paranoid, you ended up making a major mistake during your routine and you still haven’t lived down the embarrassment for it.
“I don’t wanna…” You whined but she got a hold of your hand and tugged you into the seat in front of her. You knew drinking tea with Karina had been a bad idea.
“Aw, but flower, your aura seems so distraught.” She cooed, bringing up a hand to ‘read’ you and you sighed, knowing she wasn’t going to let up. The tight grasp on your wrist was indication enough.
“Are you sure? Cuz it’s feeling pretty traught.” You quipped.
This caught the attention of the others.
‘She does your—’ ‘It doesn’t matter. Probably just a coincidence.’ Robin said harshly in his own head and the others immediately shut down. For whatever reason, Robin always got antsy whenever they talked about you. None of them could figure out why and whenever they tried to find out, Robin would snap. So, they figured it would be best to stop asking.
After all, it was his secret.
“It won’t take long, petal.” She said and you sighed, “Fine.”
“Good, now hand me your teacup.”
You gasped, “I knew that there was some ulterior motive to your kindness,” You turned your head to call for your dad who was in the other cabin, “Dad! Karina keeps hijacking my tea to do voodoo!”
He obviously didn’t respond, used to your antics by now. Karina paid no mind either, grabbing the tea cup out of your hand and looking into the shape of the tea leaves left behind. You sighed for the umpteenth time, leaning back against the arm of the sofa and crossing your arms.
Beside you, the ‘Dangers’ watched carefully. Even though they couldn’t ask Robin what about you made him so nervous and protective, they could at least try to figure it out. You seemed oblivious to their stares however, just glaring at Karina from your place on the couch.
She surprised you with an over-dramatic gasp and you jumped, “What?!”
“You’re meeting of your soulmate was this week! You likely just passed him! Do you remember anyone from the show?” She asked excitedly, squealing and reaching out to hug you. You immediately groaned and the other members began laughing at the sight of Karina pressing congratulatory kisses to your cheek.
“Karina! You’re getting lipstick all over my face!”
Finally, your dad came from the other cart, laughing at the sight of your displeased face, “What’s this you say about a soulmate?”
“Oh, yes! Jack, isn’t this exciting?! Our little petal might have found her soulmate!” She cheered, hugging you once more and you turned to your dad with an exasperated look. One that seemed to tell him, ‘Please get me out of here’
“Do you see a name in there? So, I can know who to throw into the Lion’s Den?” Your dad teased and you groaned. Must he take part in this torture as well? The others, realizing you were getting irritated, began singing the wedding march and you hid your reddening face in your hands.
“Do you know who it is, (Y/N)?” Carlos teased and behind him Angelo and Ahmed were making kissy faces.
“Yes, yes, my soulmate is one of the dangers,” You said, agitatedly, vaguely pointing at Robin who immediately blushed, “The wedding is next week, you’re all invited, can I please go now?!”
Everybody exploded into laughter and you took your chance to slink off the sofa and run out. Funnily enough now that you were out, you forgot why you were so anxious to get out and immediately started regretting your choice of words.
You groaned, slapping your stupid mouth for getting the rest of you into this mess. You should’ve just stayed quiet. ‘The wedding was next week?’ What kind of lunacy was that? He probably thought you were crazy and weird now.
Sighing, you walked to the cages to feed the rest of the animals before going to bed. If you were lucky, maybe one of the lions would eat you so you didnt have to stand in the same room as him tomorrow. (Although that seemed very unlikely because all the animals loved you to death. Not literally. Even the ferocious ones.)
***
“(Y/N)!!” Your dad shouted and Dick leapt to his feet watching you sway on the tightrope. You weren’t moving how you usually would, with agility and grace but rather clumsily and they could tell you were quickly losing balance. You were around 15 feet off the ground and your vision was getting blurry. You were sweating bullets.
You must’ve caught the bug that was going around the circus.
‘Robin!’ He heard M’Gaan cry in his head.
The pole that you were holding slipped through your fingers and your eyes fluttered shut as you felt yourself fall before regaining consciousness and, in a panic, you grabbed onto the rope, letting out a hiss as it burned your hands.
‘Don’t break cover.’ He said back, moving closer so they could help you but instead was handed a net. The rest of the Dangers immediately got to setting up the netting so if you fell then you wouldn’t be hurt.
“Hold on, (Y/N)! We’re coming to get you!” Saji reassured and you tried to keep consciousness and hold onto the rope. The rest of the members quickly set up the safety net below but you held on for as long as you could. Even if they set up the rope below, if you lost consciousness on the way down, you could still end up getting hurt if you didn’t land right.
Saji reached you fairly quickly and held you close before letting go and the two of you fell into the net. Immediately, the others crowded around you and one of the weightlifters took you into her arms.
“Get her to her bedroom.” Said your dad and she nodded, carefully taking you away.
Dick watched them rush towards your bedroom, his heart was sinking in his chest. He should’ve done something. He was berating himself for telling them not to break cover. It had been his first response and because of it, you could’ve gotten hurt.
Saji, who seemed to noticed his distraught expression, gave him a reassuring smile, “Don’t worry about it, these kinds of accidents happen often, believe it or not. She’ll turn out just fine. All she needs is a little rest.”
He nodded, but didn’t take his eyes off the door through which they just carried you. Everything turned out fine but he still felt upset and disappointed with himself.
‘It’s okay, Robin, it’s not like you could’ve stopped her from catching the flu.’ Artemis comforted, putting a hand on his shoulder and he nodded, albeit, dejectedly.
***
“Can I come in?” Dick asked, coming into your room, carrying a tray with your lunch and a few tablets for you to take, along with a first aid kit and you smiled from your bed. You quickly ushered him in, thanking him for the food before beginning to eat.
“How’re you feeling?”
“A little dehydrated but a lot better. I hope I didn’t scare you too much when I fell.” You said, drinking a glass of orange juice.
He didn’t reply. Instead, he grabbed a chair from your desk and sat beside you. You raised your brows at him but said nothing about his weird behaviour. He held out his hand to you and you stared at his open palm, raising a brow.
“What? Do you charge for bringing me food?”
He gave an exasperated sigh, “I meant give me your hand.”
Even though that weirded you out even more, you wordlessly gave him your hand and he inspected your palm. Sure enough, it was still scratched and bruised from when you grabbed the rope barehanded. He quietly tended to your wounds.
Dick (or ‘Dan’ as you knew him) gently applied some antiseptic to the few open cuts, and pulled out his own salve (courtesy of Alfred) using a cotton round to apply it evenly. He was very attentive to every hiss of pain, even going so far as to blow gently so you wouldn’t feel the sting.
He worked quietly and you didn’t mind even though you did feel the need to fill the silence when he said nothing.
“Where are your siblings?” You asked, watching as wrapped a bandage around your palm, heart fluttering slightly in your chest.
“Oh, they’re outside getting lunch.” He replied absentmindedly.
“I am surprised to see you’re not attached by the umbilical cord. You hardly go anywhere without the pack of them.” You teased and he chuckled. Technically you weren’t wrong, they hadn’t come here to mingle and this was the first time Robin had ventured without them.
“Ha-ha, yeah me too.”
You went silent after that, opting to watch his work with a fond smile. When he looked up only to see you watching him with a love-sick smile, his heart clenched in his chest. He hoped you weren’t actually falling for ‘Dan’. He didn’t want to hurt you once more.
It was bittersweet.
On one hand, the way you were looking at him made his heart race. On the other, the thought of you moving on from Dick to ‘Dan’ was actually kind of hurtful. It’s been years, you both have grown up now, but it still hurt. He supposed it was his fault, being in love with his childhood crush even after years of being apart. You probably didn’t even remember him.
You kissed his cheek, feather light, “Thank you, Dan.”
And his heart felt like breaking all over again.
***
“Your salve worked wonders!” You called out, running up to Dick with a smile that could kill. You latched onto his arm and his heart sped up in his chest.
“Oh, um, really? That’s great!” He stammered out and the others, noticing how tongue-tied he was getting around a girl, chuckled. At least now they knew that their dear Robin could actually feel such emotions. He’s usually so cool.
“How’d you get your hands on a something like that, Dan? Or I should call you wonder boy after that performance out there?”
“Oh, well, experience, you know?”
You raised a brow at his answer, “Oh, yeah, after a certain number of years on a trapeze you probably just sweat this stuff out, right? It’s a wonder people haven’t colonized you yet.”
Of course. You wouldn’t let a single stupid moment pass. It was the same when you were kids. Although, it was usually him that was teasing you. Maybe when he was gone you finally took the time to learn a page from his book.
He wanted to say something witty in response and keep this banter going. Something witty but slightly flirtatious maybe? Usually that was the only thing present in his vocabulary but with the way your chest was brushing against his arm, he could barely even remember any English. Only Romani was coming through his head.
‘Don’t speak in Romani. Don’t speak in Romani.’ He chanted in his head. ‘Don’t blow cover.’
“Dan?” He finally looked at your face which was so close to his. Heat began crawling up his neck when he noticed your lips. Red, a little glossy and slightly in a pout. Oh, he really wanted to kiss you. Without realizing, Dick began panting and then he caught a glance of your concerned eyes. Wide and innocent and so, so beautiful.
‘Don’t kiss her. Do not kiss her. Stop thinking of her lips, you goddamn pervert.’
“(Y/N) come on, it’s your slot!” You heard from the main stage. It was your time to practice your performance for the show. You gently squeezed his arm, smiling up at him and the breath was knocked out of his lungs, “I guess that’s my cue.”
Soundlessly, he nodded and you giggled.
“See you after the show, wonder boy!”
‘Don’t look at her walk away. Don’t look at her walk away.’ He screwed his eyes shut when he felt himself straying and just turned around to stop himself from doing something he’d get teased for. However, when he noticed the teasing smirks of his teammates, he felt himself blush red when he heard their voices in his head.
‘You realize that the mind link was active right?’ M’Gaan said and the others began tittering like children.
***
“I thought you might need this.” You told Dan, handing him a flash drive. He raised a brow at you and you gave him a small smile.
“It belongs to ‘Carlos,” You said, doing air quotes around the word ‘Carlos’, “Who I’m assuming is responsible for the thefts?”
“You knew?” Was his only response and you giggled, giving him an adorable smile that made his heart race a mile a minute. At that moment, he wanted to take you into his arms and kiss you till his knees felt weak. But he held off because he knew the rest of his teammates were watching from the skylight.
“Yeah, I know your little friends are up there too.” You called out, looking up to the rest of the team who ducked out of your sight, “You are a sight for sore eyes, Boy Wonder.”
“H-How?”
You scoffed, “My little tiny best friend gets adopted and moves to Gotham. Not too long after, guess what little tiny acrobat makes his debut in Gotham in little tiny shorts?” You smirked when you noticed his cheeks light red at the mention of his shorts.
“You figured it out huh?”
“Yep, I’d recognize those Grayson Gams anywhere.” You teased and he groaned, feeling heat crawl up his neck and you chuckled. He opened his mouth to say something, gain some control of the situation but you heard your cue from the show and realized you needed to say goodbye.
Leaning up to kiss his cheek, you pulled away with a sweet smile, “Come visit me the next time we’re in Gotham.” Before walking away and leaving a frozen Dick Grayson in your way.
Finally, after all these years you had the upper hand. For so long, Dick was always one step ahead of you, always looking out for you, but teasing you for being too slow.
Finally, you managed to catch him off guard.
But you spoke too soon. Before you were able to enter the tent, Dick grabbed your arm, spinning you around with such speed that you felt dizzy before kissing you, hard. Your arms wrapped around his neck instinctively, breath hitching in your throat when his teeth caught your bottom lip. His arms wrapped around your waist tightly and held your body against his. He pulled away when he heard your cue again and took a last look at you.
Pink cheeks, wide eyes and slightly red lips.
“You really shouldn’t be kissing a girl like that before she’s getting on a tightrope.” You whispered, your lips lightly brushing against his. He quickly pressed one last kiss to your lips before pulling away, with an equally red face.
“Couldn’t let you have the last word.”
“Oh, was that meant to be a conversation?”
You wanted to carry on this banter, but you heard your last cue and knew that you needed to get out there.
“I missed you.” You smiled, before running out and Dick swore, he would’ve passed out there. Years of running around with a human bat in the middle of the night and facing dangerous villains, but his heart raced faster after a kiss with you.
He heard his team, land behind him but he didn’t turn to see them, instead keeping an eye on your as you flipped on the tightrope, hearing the audience cheer for you. It was the sound of them giggling that finally got him to look at the rest of them.
“You just fooled around with the Ringmaster’s daughter.” They laughed and his cheeks went red once again.

𝙋𝙍𝙊𝙈𝙋𝙏: falling in love with her was inevitable
𝙒𝘼𝙍𝙉𝙄𝙉𝙂: alcohol consumption, yearning, fluff, reader gets drunk (and a very inaccurate description of a drunk person, probably), and slight angst. let me know if i should add more!

Loving her was inevitable.
There was no clear reason why - it just was. They wonder, how can a mere mortal be so exquisite? No one knows, but they’re all thankful for her existence.
The best part about her beauty is that she knows it, and that confidence draws you in more than anything, you can try to resist, but with eyes that shine brighter than the stars, why would you even try?
Wally West was one of many who didn’t, couldn’t, resist.
It’s a bit cliché, really, falling in love with your best friend’s sister. But from the moment he saw her on the battlefield, fire in her eyes and blood on the edge of her lips, he knew that his heart was hers.
Which was perhaps the most idiotic thing he’s ever done, falling in love with someone like her was bound to be unrequited. She deserves an equal, someone just as other worldly as her. He never stood a chance.
He’s accepted that, unfortunately, their relationship would be nothing more than platonic.
It does have some perks, being her friend. He’s able to let his guard down, no longer trying to look perfect in her eyes. His feelings still linger, he doesn’t think they’ll ever go away, but he would rather have their friendship rather than nothing at all. He gets to see her at her best and at her worst, the latter being a side most thought didn’t exist. He would hold her through the darkest nights and bring a smile to her face when she needed it the most. In some ways, he’s doing all the things he ever wanted to do with her, but instead of being her lover, he’s doing this as someone who’s just a friend.
It’s a cold October night when he gets a phone call from her. Loud music was playing in the background, and he could hear the clicking sound of her heels against the floor. “Wally!” His heart fluttered when she said his name, then he frowned when he realized how slurred her voice was, something that rarely happened unless she was-
“Are you drunk?”
“No, yes, maybe,” she giggled, the music in the background amplifying.
He frowned, since he knew her, Y/N had always been able to handle her alcohol, unless she purposely wanted to get drunk, a sign that she was not fine at all. “Where are you now?”
He got there in less than a minute, thanks to being the fastest man alive. She was stumbling out of the club when he arrived, smudged lipstick, barefoot, while she held her heels in her hand.
He still thinks she looks beautiful.
She squealed excitedly when she saw him. She dropped her heels and ran to his arms. “I missed you!!” she said as she peppers his face with kisses. Wally was sure his face was as red as his hair.
He pulled away, “Missed you, too, babe. Now let’s get a cab and take you home.”
“No,” she answered, arms crossed and an adorable pout on her lips. She lunged on his back, legs around his waist and arms wrapped around his neck. “You. Me. Piggyback. Apartment.”
He didn’t think it would be possible for his face to get any redder.
At his silence, she leaned in, and the sound of her pounding heart was starting to overwhelm him. He could’ve sworn that he was about to combust when her lips brushed over his ear when she spoke, “Pretty please?”
And how could he say no to that?
He made sure that they were in a deserted area before he ran, seeing as that he was out of costume. Once he reached her apartment, he placed her on the bed. A dreamy look was on her face as she watched his every move. “Hey,” he said, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear. “You okay?”
“M’fine,” she mumbled, closing her eyes. “Your date. Went well?”
He nearly forgot about that.
Roy was the one who had convinced him to try and see other people, emphasis on try. He remembered briefly telling her on the phone that he was going on a date this morning, and he did. They went to a coffee shop near his apartment, and she was a nice girl with a bright smile and kind eyes.
But she wasn’t her.
“She was…okay.”
She nodded, closing her eyes, “Okay.”
He stood there awkwardly for a minute before moving to leave. To his surprise, she grabbed his wrist and pulled him to the bed. Legs tangled with hers, she pulled him flush against his chest, arms wrapped around his torso.
He couldn’t get out of her embrace even if he wanted to.
“Stay,” she mumbled, lips on the crook of his neck. “Love you.”
His breath hitched when he heard those words. This must be some twisted dream, there was no way that Y/N Wayne was in love with him. The brother’s best friend, the comedy relief of the team - it was simply too good to be true.
And yet her voice sounded much too real.
A small smile graced his face as he relaxed his body on hers. Maybe this was all a dream, or maybe she’ll wake up tomorrow and forget that she had said the words he had wanted to hear from her since he was fourteen. Or, perhaps, if the universe was being kind, she’ll remember and she’ll want to take the next step, to ruin their friendship for something better, for her to have his heart, officially, and for him to have hers.
But that was a problem for future Wally West, for now, all he wanted to do was stay in her arms until the sun comes up.
