"average superhero rescues 8 people a year" factoid is actually just a statistical error. the average superhero rescues 257.3 people per year. Music Man, who lives in an underground bunker and rescues 0 people a year, is an outlier and should not have been counted

Megamind fic recs Part 2: AUs
Alternate Universe, aka Canon Divergent. These range from the ever-popular "Roxanne gets her villain while he's still a villain" variant to extreme AUs that put the familiar characters into completely different settings.
Part 2: AU completed fics
Of course I can! It's Vegas! series by @buginateacup. Pre-movie comedy of misunderstanding in which Roxanne tries to bill Megamind for the cost of clothing and shoes destroyed in evil plots and somehow ends up being flown to Las Vegas with him for a quick (but luxurious) wedding. Just when you think it can't get more over-the-top, it does. Only one bed, mutually-requited pining.
Being Normal by @nientedal and KBJones: Megamind wishes he were human. Roxanne has psychic powers that she's not quite in control of and is an abuse victim. Blood, injuries, angst.
Mischief is its Own Reward by @nientedal. Pre-movie comedy. Roxanne is Sick And Tired of being bugged about not being in a relationship, so she brings her frequent kidnapper to her mom's house in Montana for Christmas. Fake dating, only one bed, mutually-requited pining, etc.
Journey to Evil Queen by ladystina2: Pre-movie. Roxanne gets mistreated bigtime and goes looking for her frequent kidnappers instead of Mr. Goody Two Shoes because she wants satisfaction, not justice.
<3 always by @nientedal. Pre-movie. Megamind and Roxanne become online besties and wind up venting TO each other, ABOUT each other, without having any idea who the other is. Fluff, humor.
Operation: Angler Fish by @displacerghost and @setepenre-set. Pre-movie. Megamind and Minion offer to let Roxanne be Evil Queen for a day.
Put 'Em Up (Show Me What You've Got) by Colonel_bastard. An alternate ending to the movie in which Titan destroys the Defuser Gun and all hell breaks loose. Extreme violence, injury, blood.
Fools by @setepenre-set. Pre-movie. Megamind comes up with an April Fool's Day joke marriage proposal as a way of giving vent to his feelings for Roxanne while keeping himself safe from actual rejection. This being a Megamind plan, it of course goes off the rails. Angst, ironic humor, violence, and sex in the last two chapters.
Safe If We Stand Close Together series by @setepenre-set. Roxanne attends 'Lil Gifted School.
Don't Judge a Punk by Their Jacket by @setepenre-set. Teenage Megamind and Roxanne, talking together at a high school dance. It’s cold outside and he gives her his spiked leather jacket to wear.
With Every Heartbeat I Have Left by @nientedal. There are two layers to this. One is Roxanne becoming an aunt and Megamind's gradual involvement with her family. (Chapter 5 contains the Funniest Failed Kidnapping Ever, because the Master of All Villainy can't help but be thwarted by the cute.) The other is that Megamind uses his technology to conceal the cumulative bodily damage from all his battles and as a result of his involvement with Roxanne's family he is less and less able to hide it. Oh, and Hal is worse in this one. Fluff, blood, humor, angst, suspense, prosthetics, a wild ride all around.
My Love Has Wings by @setepenre-set. When you are loved, you grow wings.
Delphiniums In Starlight by @setepenre-set. Once upon a time there was a Wicked Sorcerer. Everybody knew that he was wicked; everybody said so! He said so, himself. Besides, he looked wicked: his skin was an unnatural blue and his head was large and round and bald as the moon. Probably he had been cursed to look like that, people said, for being so wicked.
Burnt Feathers by IRegretNothingAndEverything. Megamind is a fallen angel and fully embraces it and takes his new demon role seriously but Wayne falls just as a way to get out of responsibility.
Take Me Out by @setepenre-set: Takes place entirely at a Metro City Wolverines (the worst team in Major League Baseball) home game. The villain, the damsel, the hero and his mother are helpless before the brilliant plotting of bookies and snack vendors.
Paper Ships by @damienthepious. Space Opera AU in which Roxanne and Hal are crewmates on the KMCP ship Verity, which gets captured by pirates. By two particular pirates.
Dive by @nientedal. Roxanne could have noticed her interest in Megamind was more than hypothetical before he was staring up at her through three feet of green water and asphyxiating. Suspense, violence.
The Job That's In Front Of You by @nientedal. When Metro Man is careless and a plot goes belly-up in the worst way possible, Roxanne has to work with a team of guiding brainbots to save Minion's life. The emotional aftermath carries some important revelations for everyone involved. Serious injury, gross medical stuff, angst, hurt/comfort.
Fate Picks Its Favorites series by @damienthepious. Starts with both space pods, the one carrying the kid with superpowers and the one carrying the blue baby and the fish, ending up at Scott Mansion.
Temptress series by @setepenre-set-set and a follow-up, Red Lightning by Jayenne. Roxanne develops a pheromone-based superpower as a teen. Consequently she, not Megamind, becomes Metro City's resident supervillain.
The M'ega stories by @setepenre-set-set: Not the first fics to develop Megamind's and Minion's culture, it is still the most detailed and (in my opinion) beautiful. The M'ega Mythology series: like any mythology, tells of the antics of supernatural beings. Keep You: AU in which Roxanne attempts to court Megamind in the fashion of his home planet. Trick or Treat. The brainbots all know the M'ega myths and they like to dress up for Halloween...
Run by @buginateacup: Damselhood has an even darker side than the well-known danger of being a pawn in superbattles.
Swansong by @nientedal : AU. Something happens to Minion. Megamind copes badly. Hurt/comfort, angst, adventure. Much nerdery about the physics behind Metro Man's powers. My candidate for the best thing ever written in this fandom.
Many Evil Returns by LadyKnightShade. Megamind knows what Roxanne really wants for her birthday. G-rated comedy.
Florigenesis (build up your thorns, wear down your heart) by @nientedal. Soul mate AU. Not Really Hanahaki because Dal is too much of a biology nerd, so this is non-fatal coughing up flowers with awesome worldbuilding. Angst, science, drama.
In what universe? by Lynn_Nexus. Pre-movie. Megamind messing with probability was -probably- a bad idea. Angst, comedy, hurt/comfort.
Megamind College AU Series by IRegretNothingAndEverything. Teen Megamind has already been a supervillain for a few years when he is accepted to a four-year college -- the same one that Roxanne and Metro Dude are attending. Comedy, fluff, romance.
Why, Miss. Ritchi by Crooked4913. A collection of four shorts, from Megamind's point of view, on why it always had to be, Why it was always going to be, Roxanne Ritchi. Comedy, alien biology.
Nails by @buginateacup. Pre-movie. Roxanne's health seems to be failing. She wants to go to the ocean. Maybe it's my own fault for not reading the tags but I could not have guessed how this one ended. Angst with a happy ending.
The Successful Failures of El Mentador by Murasaki Yugata. Wild West AU comedy. Megamind trying to be a supervillain in the 19th century.
Fade to Black by @cell113. Pre-movie. Megamind always did want to go out with a bang. Major Character Death. Angst.
Surreptitious by @darknymfa. Megamind designed the infusion gun to create his biggest enemy. And, in a way, it did.
Blue Skies and Emerald Eyes by Lynn_Nexus. Megamind is a dragon, Roxanne is a princess facing a potential arranged marriage.
At the Grown-Up Table by @damienthepious and its response, Blacklight Investigation by @scowlofjustice. In which Metro Man and Megamind react to a 13-year-old with superpowers who has this notion that she can bring a supervillain to justice.
Communication for Soulmates by @elf-kid2. Whatever you write on your arm appears on your Soulmate's arm as well.
You're Alive? by BeetleQueen. What would happen if Megamind hadn't fallen for the fake skeleton..?

If you are hesitant to comment on AO3 because it's just fanfic and it probably doesn't matter to the writers, know that I got a one word comment ("Beautiful") on a fic nobody ever has bothered reading before and it made my night. Merry Christmas to me! Seriously, though, comments feel so good to writers! Please feed us! We're hungry!

if you’re ever in doubt about what pov to write a scene from, a good rule of thumb is to pick the person who knows the least about what’s going on. lots of pros!
you automatically have some level of tension in the scene, as they either struggle to figure out what’s happening or completely fail to notice it
if they know as much or barely more than the reader, the reader is learning things alongside them, which will help make exposition feel more natural
if they know less than the reader you now have dramatic irony! great for humor and/or agonizing tension
helps you keep secrets from the reader longer, since your pov character doesn’t know them either. (I mean you could also just carefully omit major info and pretend you thought it was obvious. see the Queen’s Thief series for several examples that span a whole novel!)
helps add a fun little mystery for the reader as they try to figure out those secrets (fun little mysteries are great attention hooks!)
“what’s going on” can mean anything btw, it could be the plot or the worldbuilding or another character’s motivation or the location of the buried treasure.
for best results, think about what each character in the scene wants to get out of this scene, and then pick the pov of the person who has least control over/knowledge of whether they get what they want. failing that, figure out which character has the most important secret that’s affecting the course of the scene, and write from the pov of someone who doesn’t know the secret. (the secret can be stuff like “I’m in love with you,” “I’m a spy for the spider queen,” “I’m the one who stole the muffins,” just whatever’s adding an undercurrent of tension to the conversation.)
this rule won’t be right for every occasion and you should trust your gut, but it’s served me well for years, so I encourage all you writers to consider it when figuring out how to approach a scene :)

Let’s Have Another Bullet Point Story, Courtesy of a Friend
So I have a friend that used to be in the tumblers troupe at the renfaire as a contortionist
We were chatting online and she told me to tell you all this story.
I love Kat dearly
but she forgets that she’s stupid strong and hypermobile
so one day she throws her back out
bad enough that she needed painkillers and couldn’t stand upright
“But also I needed Tampons and like.  A Burrito, real bad.”
she’s flat on her back in her apartment when she decides this
and, in an
impeccable
leap of reasoning, decides
“I can’t roll my back forward to sit/stand up like normal.
But I can ARCH my back just fine.
SO
I’m going to do that and get on my hands and feet in a stomach-in-the-air this-shit-belongs-in-a-horror-movie-type pose,
And amble on down to the 7-11”
“And get me that Burrito”
It is,
for context,
after midnight in July during a wildfire so it’s hot as satan’s own asshole and the moon is red and shit’s already generally cursed.
Imagineyou are some poor sap working nights at the world’s deadest 7-11, and you hear the door jangle but you don’t see anyone’s head over the counters.
Whatever.
Except you keep hearing noises like there’s someone in the next aisle over.
Fucking around in the burrito section
It’s also worth mentioning that Kat
1. sings whatever earworm is currently running through her head when she’s not paying attention
2. sounds EXACTLY like some kind of creepy child from a horror movie when doing so
tonight’s song is something from veggietales.
DUDE ACTUALLY STANDS HIS GROUND
and/or is really fucking high and isn’t sure if he’s tripping balls or notanyway
Kat goes up to pay for her burrito and tampons
She realizes the counter presents something of a challenge, and then demonstrates for me on her kitchen table at 4AM during a different july wildfire,
exactly
how she used the shelves to climb up the counter
like one of the boston robotics beasties
dude stares at her for like, five minutes and says.
“Register’s broke.”
“Oh No!” Says Kat. “Just Take ‘em.” “Really?  I can leave cash-you don’t have to give me change I don’t want you to get in trouble with your manager.” “…Nah.” “Oh!  OK!  Thank you!” “Yeah ok bye.”
Shortly after she arrived back at the apartment, she got a text on her phone from the campus security about  "A Suspicious Individual” at tle 7-11.
It took her
FOUR
FUCKING
YEARS
to realize she was the suspicious individual
