A friend of mine has been coaching me on island design and at first they made this campsite area with me and then I re-modelled it and I think her lessons are sticking! I’m so happy :D I think sherb is happy with it too! I feel like it needs a little bit more something maybe a small land formation on the left? hmmm~~

#1 natural landscaping tip 🏝️🌾

i was writing a big long list of tips, but in the end i realized that most of them all boiled down to the same thing: avoid straight edges and perfect symmetry. they can work great for man-made features like canals and digsites, but for natural cliffs and rivers, that’s not generally the look you’re going for!

let rivers wind, change width, diverge and reconnect. pay attention to your shorelines/cliffs and try to keep them from looking too even. little islands and stepping stones look really nice, and can also be useful for crossing your rivers without bridges! little stand-alone cliff “islands” can be an interesting feature too.

How to Mod by Sam

There are little mistakes made by moderators all the time here are some stead fast rules to being a moderator and keeping the communities you run safe, happy and comfortable. 1. Don’t play favorites- if you’ve gotten really attached to some of your members and these members decide to break some VERY core rules you have to be ready to apply the same punishments as you would anybody else, nobody gets a free ride. NOBODY.

2. You likely won’t always be popular / loved in the group - Moderating is a tough job because there are lots of times where you need to lay down the laws and this can result in your personal social status declining, don’t join moderating to gain popularity.

3. Know the rules inside and out - You need to enforce the rules so how can you enforce rules that you don’t know? early on moderators with little experience should keep a notepad of these rules handy usually groups have the same sets of rules to follow so after a while you’ll be able to predict the rules STILL READ THEM.

4. Don’t let your emotions dictate how you retaliate to users - Example: let’s say a user in your group was trolling and just being terrible, making a public spectacle of this and bringing personal emotion into each moderating hit is very unprofessional... simply letting the user know which rules they have broken calmly and then proceeding to ban them is good enough. Lashing out on members or other moderators is a HUGE no no! it is very immature, inappropriate and unprofessional.

5. Never fall for the lost puppy trick - this is a very particular rule when admitting folks into your group of age restrictions, you never want to make exceptions, people need to be of the appropriate age to be in your group in order to remain safe. if you suspect someone to be underage you must be ready to ID them, which is simply asking them to present an ID with blured or erased or coloured over in MS paint information ASIDE FROM DOB that is all you need.

6. Make sure your group offers mental health resources - this has definitely become more prominent these days, with more mental health resources becoming available to the public it’s very vital to offer these options, moderators whether trained in mental health certification's or not should not try and replace the supports a mental health professional can offer, we can ofc be there to support our members for the little bumps and ruts but we can’t be their therapist.

7. Do some moderating in silence - it’s great to talk to chat and let them know you are there for them :) and very important every now and again to let them talk to you. But, one should also remember to moderate in silence every now and again keeping quiet in chat and simply going through and removing the bad, muting the inappropriate, banning the vastly inappropriate, why? because this gives the chat the sense that at all times ... someone could be watching. it seems creepy true but it also keeps people a bit more on the straight and narrow. 

8. It’s okay to not have the answer - sometimes we just don’t know all the answers and that’s okay, during this time it’s good to have a chat handy with other moderators to ask for assistance or other opinions.  

9. Be careful what you share to the group - This is just a general rule of thumb but because you are a moderator you are in the spotlight quite a lot more than other users would be, so be very careful the information you disclose to the group, remember that everything that you say is permanent and cannot be taken back.

10. Lead by example and keep inappropriate personal activities as private as possible - this can be harder said than done, it’s almost scary the technology we have these days, if you are somebody who uses a particular selfie more than once on any social media try doing a reverse image search and dragging your selfie into that search window, you will find all of your personal profiles doing that. Therefore if you can do this anyone can. True story I will disclose I had an ex boyfriend who did this with a Facebook photo of mine and he found several profiles on gamer websites and forums and even some websites I had forgotten about... that’s how I know the trick in the first place. If your details match up with something you’d rather the community not know about remember you are taking a risk that someone will find it. so protect yourself.
