Hello! No, you don't need a portfolio, just the three samples. :) A portfolio is there as optional content if you feel you have other pieces of work to best show off your skills and experience.

Hi there, thanks for reaching out! We understand the concerns surrounding other zines in the SU sphere, but we're confident in our ability to deliver on our promised final product! Our Head Mod, who handles shipping in addition to socials, has successfully completed a number of physical products that you're welcome to view over at https://hivezines.carrd.co/#portfolio. There's no worry that this project will be meaningfully different from past outings, Rose zine notwithstanding.

Unfortunately, passion projects of any kind are ultimately a leap of faith, since despite best efforts and intentions, there's a chance of things going awry. We encourage you to exercise your best judgment with all areas involving money and risk, and you're the only one who can decide if a project is worth taking that leap.

What will the artist acceptance/application process look like? Such as will the pitch be what gets one a spot? or something like that?

Hello and thank you for your question!

Pitches won't have any bearings on the application process, and won't be required to fill in on the app. Pitches will only matter when it comes to assigning out characters for accepted contributors. So you will need to at least note what characters you'd want to draw but that's it.

For the acceptance process, we will judging based on several factors, like completed pieces with backgrounds and illustrative experience, so rendering, finalized linework, so on. Technical skills and experience does also factor in but isn't an automatic disqualifier since we look for all kinds of art styles and experience levels! :)
