You know what’s harder than being a regulus kinnie? Being a James kinnie who realized young that they wouldn’t survive in the world on just kindness. Who realized quickly that the world was a mean place and they had to become meaner if they wanted to survive.

A James kinnie who turned into a regulus kinnie is infinitely more heartbreaking. Someone who used to be all easy smiles and trust, now guarded in every way possible. To go from someone who was yes, a little naive, but with the ability to see the light even in perpetual darkness to someone who is so pessimistic that they prefer to hide in the shade where the light cannot reach them.

But do you know whats even sadder than being one or the other? Being both. Reconnecting with the child inside you and realizing that you are just a fragmented shell of a person. Made of parts and never whole, always falling on either end of the extremes and never in the comfortable middle, where everyone else lives. Someone who is so so so desperate to trust and to love, someone who longs for it, yet would rather spend everyday alone rather than risk being hurt. Because trusting and loving is vulnerable, and they were quickly taught that being vulnerable made you weak. And they can’t afford be weak, not for their own sake, lest someone use that weakness to exploit them, and especially not for the people around them, the ones they let get close at least.
