Also apparently Galileo didn’t get put on trial by the Catholic Church just because of heliocentrism, apparently he got put on trial because he was an asshole about heliocentrism, didn’t have all of the evidence he needed to actually really prove heliocentrism (apparently one of the big hangups at the time was “why are the stars so small if the heliocentric math says they should be big?”, and they didn’t have the tech yet to explain “it’s because the stars are really goddamn far away”). Apparently one of the Popes at the time, who was actually Galileo’s friend, actually did let him write about heliocentrism on the condition that he talked about the pros and cons of the theory instead of the aggressive “this is real and you’re all dumb!!!!” he’d been doing. And Galileo, high intelligence/negative wisdom/negative charisma dumbass he was, doubled down on his arguments and also insulted his friend the Pope by representing the Pope’s arguments via a character named “the Simpleton”. And it was this idiot move of shittalking his now ex-friend the Pope that got him on the big bad trial we all know now, not helped by the fact that he apparently burned all his fucking bridges with everybody else who could’ve saved his bacon too (apparently one of the people in charge of his trial was a guy he plagiarized too). It was never about actual religious faith or heresy, it was always just. The stupidest, pettiest politics fight.

please please please pray for my Papa, he's 85 and something happened with his hernia or his stomach. The ambulance is on its way to his house and my daddy is going over there, but we don't know much right now. Please keep us in your thoughts. His name is Ralph, please pray for him.
Even if you aren't religious, please say a Hail Mary or Our Father for us. Thank you.
I'll update with more news

I've had a conversation with an old college friend a couple months ago and she told me where she lives now, it's not permitted to have your children share a bedroom, which surprised me. And she also thought it was abusive to do so. So, yeah, poll time.

Children's oppression and lack of humanization is one topic that makes my insides feel like they're rotting and I'll die on the hill of defending them and pointing out how fucking gross it is every single time people act like it's cool actually to hate a group of people who are the least able to defend themselves in any terrible situation
Y'all will scream "protect queer kids" "protect trans kids" "protect kids of color" then forget all that and proudly stand behind "well kids are fucking annoying in public actually so it's fine when I talk about wanting to have grocery stores and planes that are child free :)" individualism has killed humanity so deeply

The idea that a religion should change with the times is dumb.
Okay, so your god suddenly sees the rules in a different way than they did for centuries before. That means either A: You worship a god that learns and develops its morality alongside humanity- making it no more moral or upright than an average human and therefore unworthy of any form of worship.
Or B: You worship a god that does and has always had moral standards, but is choosing to lie and hide those standards from its followers, in which case the dishonesty and failure to communicate expectations also renders it unworthy of worship.
Or C: the religion actually DOES stand firm with an immutable and unchanging moral god, but the followers have decided not to follow that idea and instead pretend their god has changed its mind about truth and morality, which means the followers consider themselves more knowledgable and trustworthy concerning morality and they therefore don't truly worship or respect this god they claim to follow.
The Christian God does not and will not change His decisions on right and wrong. You can worship Him and accept His word, or you can deny Him and reject it. But do not put words in His mouth as if He is some child who doesn't know what's best and needs you to speak for Him. Either you know that God understands morality better than you and has set rules for your good, or you don't think He's all-knowing at all and you have no reason to follow Him in the first place.

If sex is a service rape is just unpaid labor.
If sex is a service it can be provided to family members, morally.
If sex is a service it can be a small child’s career aspiration, and it should be supported as such.
If sex is a service then pornographic content can also be displayed to children,as they should be given examples of their work possibilities.
If sex is a service, and sex work is an existent opportunity to you, you can’t complain about being unemployed.
If sex is a service csa is just some form of child labour.
If sex is a service it is bigoted and against the costumer rights to denny service on the basis of anything, including sex, regardless of the workers orientation they should provide service to the costumer.
Things get really creepy when you mix things with inherent different natures like sex and labour, I know.

Prayer request
Could I have some prayers, I'm in a really bad place mentally. I'm just so miserable and suicidal. And I don't know what to do. Not that long ago, the person I'm couchsurfing with was talking about how he wanted to stay in this flat more permanently and offer me a proper place on the contract so I would have a stable place to stay. Then today he broke the news that he's looking to stop renting this place soon so I'm going to have to look for a new place to stay.
The housing market + the job market here is a mess. I've been struggling to find a job but no luck. Trying to find a flat with only benefit money is going to be a nightmare at best. My entire life exploded less than a year ago, and it feels like every time I get towards a bit of stability it's all ripped away from me again. I'm so miserable and depressed. I just don't know what to do anymore. I don't know how long I can just keep taking these blows

Personally I don’t know how anyone reads any Greek myths, particularly the Iliad and comes to the conclusion “the gods are good and worthy of my love and worship.” Seems counter intuitive. I don’t even think the Greeks liked doing that, it was more like lip service to a crime boss. They just didn’t want their gyro stands burnt down.

Why is it only Catholics have to sell their priceless artifacts of worship? What about every other religion with gold statues and jewel-encrusted temples? Why is no one joking about making them give all that away?
By the way, the Catholic Church is by far the largest charitable organization in the world, and many of those “golden cathedrals” you so badly want to have sold off double as homeless shelters and soup kitchens. We already give and give and give but every time the joke is “Hm, well that tabernacle looks expensive, why don’t you have it melted down and feed a bunch of starving African kids?”
Just say you have no respect at all for Christianity or what’s considered sacred. You don’t give a shit about poor people, you just have a personal disdain for the Church.
done-with-discourse
Children in Africa aren’t starving because the Catholic Church won’t feed them. They’re starving because we keep sending them money but their corrupt governments keep it for themselves while their people continue to fucking starve.
I’m not even Catholic, but this has been common knowledge for years.
Now, I’m no economics major, but I’m pretty sure all the money Catholics would make from selling all their gold and stuff wouldn’t make much of a dent in world hunger and might actually crash the gold and stuff market.
But of course tumblr thinks “throw other people’s money at the problem!” is a good idea.

DISCLAIMER: This is not a troll/hate post. Many people have already assumed it is, so I thought I’d just put this here for future receivers.
MANIFESTIMONY (1/???)
Lately, I’ve been trying to block out all outside influences from my personal relationship with god, but here’s the difficult thing about that: I’m still looking for answers. The Bible on its own isn’t enough for me, it’s just not. It’s vague as fuck, and there’s a lot of unanswered questions that I need properly answered if you expect me to understand any of it at all. But when most Christians/Pastors tell me their answers, I add those answers into the equation and it just makes me feel even worse, leaving me with even more questions, depression, paranoia, and overall confusion than before. I know that you probably think I shouldn’t let other Christians influence my relationship with God, as if it’s not already bad just being God, The Bible, and me. I try to picture God how you all want me to picture him (a loving father), but then thoughts of all the things he did in the bible come to mind, and I start to feel as if it's all just a facade. It all crumbles away, and I start to feel sick. I just can’t feel safe in him. It feels better viewing Christ as a being entirely separate from God, a being that came to sacrificed himself to save us from his father’s wrath. If Jesus is God, the same god that did all of those things, then I feel like he deserved everything they did to him. Why should I feel bad for him? He’s the all-powerful ruler of existence, he has everything he could ever want and infinitely more. He CHOSE to become human, he KNEW he would be killed in the way he was. He WANTED to be killed in the way he was. In fact, why should I feel bad for him anyway? He’s the son of God, that makes him one of the most privileged people in existence by default. He didn’t even stay dead, so what exactly did he sacrifice? Even ignoring all of that, why did God feel he had to die in one of the most violent and horrific ways imaginable just so he can save us from himself? Is God not powerful enough against sin to avoid bloodshed? Or is he just that bloodthirsty? Why did God have to kill so many people? Is God not all-powerful against the devil? Can God not just come up with a way to fix the issue without killing his children? Did he know he would have to do this to them? If he did, then why did he create them in the first place? Are we all just disposable toys for him? Things he can play with for a while and then discard when we don’t serve the purpose he wanted us to have? Does he even really consider us humans his children? Or just the ones that mindlessly obey him? God never changes apparently, so he’s still the same bloodthirsty, apathetic tyrant he was when he did all those things. Why should I trust him? Because he created me? Look at what he HIMSELF did to the things he’s created in the past. I know God hates me asking all these questions and is probably contemplating the right time to kill me right now, but I’ve tried to stop thinking about all of this, and I just can’t. I wish God never gave humans free will. He had no reason to give humans free will whatsoever. He knew ALL of the risks, knowing that he would have to kill so many of his own creations, ones that he supposedly “loved”, and knowing that most of those creations wouldn’t come back to him, and he STILL gave us free will. WHY? Does he just love seeing us fuck up all the time so he can justify punishing us? Otherwise, I can’t see a reason. Think about how much better everything would be if we didn’t have free will, how much happier we all would be, and most importantly, how much happier God would be. There would be no sin, because we’d be unable to. We would still be in the garden. God wouldn’t have to have killed any of us and none of us would go to hell. The more Christians I talk to, the less christians I’m able to talk to, and the more I feel like, maybe this is God’s way of telling me I deserve to be alone.
Hi! Wow. That’s a lot, but they’re all wonderful questions. i’ll try my best to answer them.
And God is the author of knowledge, he is not upset by you, asking questions. It’s perfectly OK, and even good to have questions about God.
1.) The Bible on its own isn’t enough for me: The Bible is the inspired authoritative word of God, let’s make that abundantly clear. I’m Catholic, so my view on sacred scripture tends to be that there is the written word of God and the unwritten word of God. The written word of God is the Bible (obviously). The unwritten word of God is thousands of years of scholars and researchers and tradition provided by the Church. You need to both feel whole. And sometimes, in fact most of the time, just saying “it’s in God’s plan” is not enough. And that’s OK. And sometimes you do need to pay attention to what writing style. The book of the Bible is it, not every book is addressed to the same audience. It’s OK to not have the answer to every single thing. Asked for specific questions that you have that caused you to feel depressed or paranoid, I wouldn’t mind you sending them to me and I’ll answer to the best of my ability when I have time.
2.) I don’t feel like the God of the Bible is a loving God: to start with the death of thousands of people in the Bible, one might need to understand that God is in fact, the author of life. Being alive is not something any of us are privileged to. It’s a gift. If you want to give someone $20 every day, and then one day you stopped, would that be considered morally reprehensible? I doubt it would be, because it is a gift. We didn’t do anything to deserve it, and as a result, he has the right to take it away if he feels that it would be better. And it’s also good to remember, in cases of war, and another place where people have been murdered, killed, or died, Sacred Scripture isn’t always necessarily filled with things that God proves us. Rather, more often then not, it is a list of instructions, and reactions to those things.
Historic context is a big thing too, for example, the Philistine’s sacrificed children. In the Great Flood, innocent children would’ve died, and in a sense it’s almost merciful, because they have no chance of going to hell then. A little bit of suffering, in exchange for a perfect eternity. He does not do things without reason. And does He love each and every one of us equally. If he did not want any of us, he wouldn’t have made us. And if he wanted to, he could end the world with just a word. He doesn’t, despite having full, right too. Because he love us.
https://youtu.be/Ei0gPoqx_bQ?feature=shared
This video explains really well, and I think he does a better job explaining that I ever could. 2.) Why does Jesus sacrifice matter: It’s because he didn’t have to that it matters so much. God is justice, just as much as he is love. He’s not a sneaky politician who functions outside of his own rules that he set up. God is infinite, and so an offense to him is eternal. And an eternal offense, would require eternal payment. and us, not being perfect, could never fully pay it off even if we tried. So he himself takes the punishment for the sins we commit.
You’re heard this all before.
Now, why does any of this matter? Ultimately, he only gave us two days. A weekend.
Wow, that’s not exactly true. Remember, we mentioned earlier that God is infinite. That means he exists outside of time. And because Jesus is God, the third person of the Trinity if we’re going to get specific, that means he is constantly suffering. Constantly going through one of the most painful torture procedures known to man kind. And he would’ve done it several times over, even if you were the only person to ever Christ. He would’ve done it, and suffered constantly as a results.
He did not have to do this. But he did anyway. For you.
And he’s dying the way that we would deserve. Nobody likes to think of themselves as a bad person, but if we are going to be Bible accurate.. then we all are (except for babies and such, but they are a different case).
3.) if God is all powerful, why does he allow evil: Well, the video that I linked earlier should cover this topic, but I figured I might as well give my two cents on it.
One possible explanation is that God allows for evil and Satan to exist in order to give us the freedom to choose between good and evil. Without free will, we would essentially be robots programmed to do only what is good, which would not be a true reflection of our nature as human beings.
Additionally, some believe that the presence of evil in the world allows for the opportunity for greater good to come out of it. In facing and overcoming evil, we can grow in character, compassion, and love.
Ultimately, the reasons for why God allows evil to exist are not fully known or understood, but it is believed by many that God’s ultimate plan and purpose will be revealed in due time.
But if it comforts you, if you believe, or at least would like to believe, that God is good, then surely, there are reasons that we might just not be privy too.
Now that is out of the way….
God does not want you alone. That is made clear in the book of Genesis:
“Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” —Genesis 2:18
And this does not just apply to marriage. But all people. Just the three persons of the Trinity are in communion with themselves, humanity is called to be in communion with each other. Find a community of people. Don’t isolate yourself.
I’m sorry if my answer isn’t satisfactory, most never are, but I hope I helped.
God loves you, and I love you. So very much.
Remember to drink water and take care of yourself.
I pray you find what you’re looking for.
