Indie as a subculture
Indie was a fashion trend that was popular in the United States and United Kingdom from 2006 to 2012. It was characterized by affordable clothing, amateur photography, and a carefree attitude. The style was often compared to hipster subculture, and it was seen as a response to the Great Recession. Indie experienced a resurgence in the early 2020s, when it was first retroactively named and subsequently became popular on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Moving further Indie fashion and Indie culture — terms widely used — are interrelated. Indie fashion is not just about wearing clothes from independent designers. It can also include retro, vintage, or other iconic looks that buck the mainstream. This means that anything from 80s fashion to avant-garde styles can be considered classic indie fashion. On the other hand, Indie culture is an entire genre that includes music, movies, clothing styles, and other facets of life. It is characterized by its separation from commercial institutions and mainstream lines, and is often considered synonymous to alternative styles. Many people trace the beginning of indie culture back to the 1980s, and since then it has attracted mostly youth with its unique and artistic trends. Today, it has become so popular that it has grown from a niche to a part of mainstream society. Even older individuals can now empathize with indie culture. More importantly, there are certain subcultures that have found themselves a part of the indie scene, including hippie, emo, grungers, mods, and recently even metalheads. Each of these groups has their own philosophies and beliefs. So if we want to simply understand Indie today then — what is indie?
Indie is known today more by the name of “Indie sleaze”: A messy look of ’90s grunge and ’80s opulence with a minimal erotic undertone.  The current form of "indie sleaze" was coined by TikTok trend forecaster Mandy Lee (@OldLoserInBrooklyn) at the end of last year. Lee believes that the community aspect of indie sleaze is what makes it so appealing. She says that people have been craving community and creativity after two years of lockdown, and that indie sleaze provides a way for people to connect through art, music, and photography. Is the trend boosting up? The indie sleaze trend has been gaining popularity for some time, thanks to the work of certain creative directors. For example, Hedi Slimane's stint at Saint Laurent featured pieces that could easily be worn by indie sleaze enthusiasts, such as dishevelled knit cardigans, oversized plaid shirts worn as dresses, and his signature skin-tight denim. Alessandro Michele's revamp of Gucci also features cross-era vintage-inspired separates that could be seen as quite indie, while Chanel, Raf Simons, and Marni have also incorporated elements of indie sleaze into their designs.
Looking at these pictures we can get a sense of the Indies’ return into FASHION!

I’ve been thinking lately about a possible correlation between the Pluto in Sagittarius generation and Fast Fashion.
In the past decades, there was a well known phrase saying that the fashion cycle involves a come back of each decade every 30 years when it comes to trends (ex : the resurgence of the 80s fashion trends during the 2010s). However, with the Pluto in Sagittarius generation growing up and their style being increasingly democratized, we can remark the break of this cycle. They chase a new style inspired by each decade, use it and leave it after a couple of years when their « niche » style becomes too mainstream. There’s an overconsumption of fashion that leads to a bigger variety of clothing but then fade away really quickly. The 30 year cycle is broken because I see more and more girls getting dressed like Bella Swan (Twilight) and Elena Gilbert (The Vampire Diaries), two characters from famous early 2010s movies/shows.
Now, what’s the link with astrology ? Sagittarius is a mutable, fire and Jupiter ruled-sign; meaning that this sign can be really passionate and into something they might find their way to freely express themselves in (fire energy) but after the feeling of finally getting what they wanted so bad, they get annoyed and they are no longer entertained by it so they drop it and go to their new beloved hobby (mutable energy). They rather like the chase than stability. Also, Sagittarius is the sign that rules teaching and inspiration, so that’s why this generation likes to share through social media how to develop their style by teaching them how to find cheap copies when it comes to expensive clothes or which brands they should check if they want to have a certain style. Many random people become fashion influencers online and spread faster the « underground » aesthetic which makes the people who used to dress like that give it up because it became too mainstream. Plus, with the Pluto in Sagittarius fashion, we can see the fact that fashion gets more and more inspiration from abroad (with the African American, East European and East Asian cultures) and through all the previous decades (Grunge, hippie, French and English old money or even, the 90s skate aesthetic).
