Whats the difference between lichen, moss, mould and mushrooms if they're all fungus? Aren't they all the same sorta thing?
so, interestingly, all of these groups are very different !! instead of naming the differences, let me quickly explain what exactly these organisms are.
lichen :
lichens are symbiotic organisms, meaning they are in themselves the product of a relationship between different organisms. to simplify it, lichens are big part fungus, & smaller part algae (protista) or cyanobacteria (monera). these different forms of life together create lichen, which grows on trees, rocks, leaves, mosses & sometimes other lichens !! to read more about lichens, check out @/lichenaday's blog :-)
moss :
mosses are actually not fungi at all !! they are small, flowerless plants. they grow on trees & in soil. :-)
mould :
mould is a type of structure that fungi can form - it is entirely fungal. it reproduces through airborne spores :-) there are many different types of mould ; some are toxic, some are used medicinally, & some are saprotrophs. (note : slime moulds & water moulds are unrelated to fungal moulds !!)
mushrooms :
so, lots of people think mushrooms are a species of fungus, but they are not. "mushroom" refers to the fruiting body of a fungus ; what a mushroom is to a fungus is comparable to what a flower is to a tree - the part that reproduces !! not all fungi produce mushrooms (e.g. moulds, which do not have fruiting bodies as the entire organism is able to release spores). there are currently only 14 000 discovered fungi that produce mushrooms !! more fungi that don't produce mushrooms include mildew, yeast & lichen.
so, yes !! they're all quite different in structure, cells & function in the ecosystem.

Going off the inkcap into ink ask, apart from food and ink, what else can I do/make with fungus?
here's a little list !! :-)
with artist's conk brackets, you can use the underside for drawing as - when the flesh is scraped away - there is a brown layer underneath. when it dries & hardens the art will keep for a long time :-)
Tumblr media
mushrooms that contain psilocybin are used as psychedelic drugs - the most potent is p. azurescens.
Tumblr media
many different fungi can be used as dyes -
many moulds are used in food manufacturing processes, for example when making cheese or yoghurt.
you can purchase mycopesticides to control pests.
yeast is a fungus that we consume every day through beer, wine, soy sauce & bread products. :-)
that's about all i've got for you, luna !! <3

Can you please make up a list of commonly found edible mushrooms?
Cause every time you show a mushroom (especially a funky one) I go can I eat it?:D (if says unknown I wanna eat for uhh science reasons)
So I need a list so I dont accidentally end myself with a snack haha
ooh, yeah !! this list won't be *complete*, but it will contain the most popular edible mushrooms. there are about 200 fungi species commonly eaten by humans (at the moment), but over 3000 fungi are edible. in the list, the bolded ones are found in nature & can be foraged + eaten :-) the underlined mushrooms are linked to a FOTD post about them.
enoki
shimeji
button / cremini / portabellini
chanterelles (many varieties)
hedgehog mushroom
chicken of the woods
lion's mane
morels (many varieties)
truffles
oyster mushrooms
king oyster
shiitake (more like SHiT-take . i hate these guys for texture reasons but everyone else seems to love their taste haha)
maitake
penny bun
shaggy ink cap (when young)
puffballs & giant puffballs
here is a link to an article with more info, too :-)
here are some meals you can make with mushrooms !!

Hello. How r u? :)
Have you spoken about the "schizophyllum commune" yet?
Its a type of fungus I saw here on tumblr but idk which page I got it from. If you spoke about it already then dw.
I heard this fungus (mushroom? Idk the difference) has over 23,000 separate genders (mating types) which I think is hella neat :)
Anyway hope you have a great day. I love ur blog so much <3
hey !! i'm okey, thanks for asking, & i hope you're alright, too :-)
i don't believe i've spoken about them, yet, but they're honestly a fascinating species.
so, first off, this fungus does produce mushrooms, so you can call it either !! "mushroom" is the term for the fleshy, spore-bearing fruit body of a fungus.
about the mating types - yes !! it has 23 328 distinct mating types (different from genders ; *slightly* different to sexes, but more similar). of these types, most are compatible with each other !!
another interesting fact is that they are thought to be the cause of a few fungal infections - specifically those affecting the lungs. on a few occasions, they have also caused allergic reactions & sinusitis.
schizophyllum is derived from the greek word schíza meaning "split", which is also mentioned in it's common name, split gill.
i'll be happy to post a FOTD about it, soon :-)
Tumblr media
[iD: a photograph of the split gill mushroom growing from a tattered, decaying log in the foreground. the mushroom consists of three fungal bodies. the insides are vein-like & brown, while the edges are fuzzy & white. the background is blurry shades of green. end iD]
