you know it occured to me, as I wrote that last post, that one of the very BEST things about my current job as a bicycle assembler/warehouse ops person is that I have never, not once, had to navigate the various websites of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

I hate fandom drama but:
*Starts fandom drama*
Just saw someone very popular in a fandom that I'm in post this big huge rant about how no one is characterizing their fave character "correctly" in fanfic? And how its clear "Nobody who writes him has played his spinoff game!"
Its like
chill out.
It's fanfiction. Literally the nerdiest fucking thing worldwide. It is so 100% such a completely unserious way to spend our time?
We are all literally grown ass adults playing makebelieve with our favorite characters. We are smashing these fictional characters around like Barbies and making them do dumb stuff for our own amusement.
ITS FINE.
ITS LITERALLY FINE.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHARACTERIZE SOMEONE "PERFECTLY".God, you don't even have to write "good" fanfiction? You can literally just write total dogshit and post it and so long as it makes you happy thats fine??
Write bad fanfiction. Write dumb takes. Mischaracterize someone for fun. Make them do dumb shit they wouldn't do in canon. Write 100k words about two characters in different timelines doing shit that is literally impossible in canon. ITS FINE. LITERALLY NO ONE AT ALL IS BEING INJURED BY YOU WRITING MAKE BELIEVE SHIT.
ITS ALL FINE.
YOU'RE NOT BEING PAID TO DO THIS WHY WOULD YOU LISTEN TO SOMEONES SOUR ASS TAKE?? Especially on something you decided to dedicate your own time and effort to and post for free?? Radical self love is the future babes.

One inconvenient side effect of my state of being somewhat allergic to most fan-translated light novels (for "the prose tends to be Deeply Awkward, probably because all the translators who reach the level of doing Actual Good Prose get scooped up by the official translation-licensing companies?" reasons) is that it makes it difficult and vaguely nerve-wracking to interact with the Monogatari fandom.
Because, like... there are two whole seasons of the series which exist only in fan-translation, not in official translation! And the fandom has, very reasonably, gone and, like, read the books comprising those seasons. But I haven't, and don't expect that to change for a pretty long time! And thus, despite being a big fan of the series, I can't really safely interact with the fandom, for fear of spoilers.
Eventually, this will be fixed one way or another, either by the remaining novels getting official translations (...after the manga translations finish? I hope? Although my hope is somewhat weaker than it would have been a few years ago, given the context where the Zaregoto and Pretty Boy Detective Club translations both seem to have stopped too despite not involving the same translators) or by my learning enough Japanese to read the remaining books in the original or by my figuring out some way to increase my tolerance for light novel fan-translations.
Hopefully one of these will happen before I run into Major Spoilers, rather than only after.

What is Tradewinds?
Tradewinds was an original Fae Tales novel set in the canonical universe, that has been shelved due to me not being able to find Aboriginal Australian sensitivity readers who were happy to read gay male/male sex scenes.
It was based on a separate cast and set in Australia and Malaysia, with their series being part of the 'MerchantVerse.' Basically how merchants trade, who they trade with, and the stronger Seelie and Unseelie divide among fae.
The story features Matan, a Malay Seelie peacock pheasant shifter and master merchant specialising in selling batik, needing to find a cure for an Unseelie curse placed on his cousin. To go on the journey necessary to get information, he pretends to be Unseelie, and joins an Unseelie merchant caravan of birds of prey (almost all raptor shifters are Unseelie). There, he meets Udir, a Romansh bearded vulture/lammergeier shifter who is frequently down on his luck, and has worked as an assassin in the past.
Udir finds out Matan is actually Seelie, and then blackmails him into sex, thinking that he's being clever, only to not realise that Matan's very clever too.
And then it was basically about Matan and Udir falling in love, Matan going on an Eran-like journey of learning to understand that the difference between Seelie and Unseelie isn't as black and white as he thought, and finding the cure for his cousin, and learning about trading in Australia with his Unseelie merchant friends, while dealing with a pretty awful villain in the meantime.
It's very found family.
I really like the story, and I think with a little reworking, the novel would be super strong. However there's literally only one white main character, and everyone else is either Maori or Aboriginal Australian or Malay etc. so while I was able to get some of the sensitivity reading done, some of it I couldn't get done (and I lost money in the process, because one person said they would sensitivity read for me, asked for a $150 deposit about 7 years ago, and then took it and never talked to me again, which was frankly very demoralising and depressing, because like, as a disabled, chronically ill person with cancer, I kind of needed that money too, lmao).
So...the book is pretty much permanently shelved. I did share some chapters on Patreon under a redundant tier (which would now be the $10+ tier, but I need to edit those posts to reflect that). And everyone who's ever read it thinks I should publish it. I just...don't feel comfortable with that given I'm writing Indigenous side characters.
Sula did a really lovely sketch of Matan though:
