That post that’s been going around about how Dungeons & Dragons liches are antisemitic caricatures because a lich’s phylactery is supposed to be a tefillin has been nagging at me because, while I was aware that the term “phylactery” can refer to a tefillin in some contexts, I 100% did not recall it being described that way.

I looked up the description of the lich in the 5th Edition’s Monster Manual to check my memory, assuming that’s what folks were referring to, and:

A phylactery is traditionally an amulet in the shape of a small box, but it can take the form of any item possessing an interior space into which arcane sigils [...] are inscribed in silver. (p. 203)

Uh, yeah, that’s definitely name-checking a tefillin. Absolutely no doubt there. Not a good look, Wizards of the Coast!

So my next question was, where the heck did that come from? I didn’t remember that at all – had I just been overlooking it for thirty-odd years, or was it a recent change?

After a deep dive through my library, I think I’ve pinned down exactly when things went south.

In chronological order:

OD&D: Liches appear in D&D for the first time in the Greyhawk supplement in 1975. They’re briefly described as a sort of undead spellcaster; no mention is made of storing their soul in any sort of vessel.

1st Edition: Liches show up in the Monster Manual in 1977, and are further elaborated upon in Dragon magazine issue 26 in 1979. This marks the first appearance of liches pulling their now-customary Koschei the Deathless routine by hiding their soul inside a separate object in order to achieve immortality. The term “phylactery” is applied to this object, though not consistently; it’s more often referred to as a “jar”, apparently with reference to magic jar, a wizard spell from the same edition which – as you may have guessed – allows the caster to transfer their soul to an object. Though the nature of a lich’s “jar” is never directly described, the writeup for the spell magic jar indicates that its material component is “a gem or large crystal”; this is consistent with how liches are depicted in 1st Edition’s art.

(The inconsistent usage and lack of description make it difficult to draw any conclusions about why the author of the 1977 Monster Manual chose the term “phylactery”. It’s possible that they’d intended it to be a reference to a tefillin. It’s also possible that they just looked up “amulet” or “talisman” in a thesaurus – many modern thesauri continue to list “phylactery” as a synonym for either or both of those words.)

2nd Edition: The lich appears in the 2nd Edition’s Monstrous Compendium Volume 1 in 1989, later compiled in the Monstrous Manual in 1993; as far as I’m aware, its text doesn’t differ between the two printings. The game seems to have settled on “phylactery” as the consistent term for a lich’s soul vessel by this point. This is also the first time it’s ever directly described, as follows:

The phylactery, which can be almost any manner of object, must be of the finest craftsmanship and materials with a value of not less than 1,500 gold pieces per level of the wizard. (p. 223)

That’s all we get. Anecdotally, liches’ soul vessels in most 2nd Edition art and fiction tend to be depicted as crowns, rings, or other symbols of power.

3rd Edition: The lich continues its run of core book appearances with the 3rd Edition’s Monster Manual in 2000. I’m going to cut right to the chase on this one:

The most common form of phylactery is a sealed metal box containing strips of parchment on which magical phrases have been transcribed. This typically has a leather strap so that the owner can wear it on the forearm or head. (p. 217)

Apparently it’s not as recent a change as I’d suspected!

This one’s incredibly blatant about describing a lich’s soul vessel as a tefillin, far more so than the 5th Edition version. It even goes as far as redefining it as something worn on the lich’s person in order to reinforce the resemblance, where previous material would typically describe it as something hidden away for safekeeping. (i.e., in the manner of the Koschei folklore that initially inspired it.) All subsequent editions have retained the 3rd Edition’s description with only minor editorial changes.

So what the hell happened between 1989 and 2000?

After a lot of cross-checking, I believe I’ve pinned down the culprit as 1993′s Van Richten’s Guide to the Lich. This marks the earliest piece of D&D material I’ve been able to locate that reflects the change in direction that would later make its way into the 3rd Edition’s Monster Manual.

None of this is terribly relevant with respect to whether the current description of the D&D lich is Antisemitic, of course, but it’s an informative case study of how stuff that (probably) didn’t start out that way can become infected over time – and in my case, how it can fly under the radar because I’d never had occasion to look up any of the relevant material’s more recent iterations until now. Lesson learned!
