TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
tagged by @sophiedevreaux thank u you're so sweet 💖 now watch out, you're about to gain more knowledge of old british sitcoms than anyone other than me has ever needed or wanted
💛 the good life - the ultimate. the love of my life. the only show. if you want to feel better about everything ever, watch the good life. it's hilarious, it's ingenious, it's the 1970s, the cast are golden, and everyone is so terribly nice.
💛 scott & bailey - one of sally wainwright's great masterpieces, and probably my favourite of her shows these days, featuring truly incredible, wonderfully written milf detectives (meaning janet, gill, and julie. rachel is ... also there) catching murderers.
💛 gilmore girls - who doesn't wish they lived in stars hollow? i just want to eat at luke's every day, go to town meetings, attend all the little events. this show is so clever, so well-written, so comforting, so good. lorelai, emily, and luke my beloveds. let's just pretend season six never happened.
💛 2point4 children - possibly this should have been first bc honestly 2point4 children represents so much of my personality. it's fantastic. it's hilarious. the writing is exemplary. bill porter is a genius, a queen, and The Goal character to portray. if i were a tv trope, i'd be Deadpan Snarking, Long-Suffering Matriarch in an old british sitcom, of which she is the quintessential example. also, this show centres around a married couple named bill and ben. i told you, it's genius.
💛 the thin blue line - ben elton's great masterpiece. i'm not saying the young ones and blackadder aren't good too, bc they are, but the thin blue line is god tier. it's so great, so cleverly written, and so, so funny. i can recite whole scenes, and, yet, they're still so funny every time i rewatch. it's brilliant.
💛 dinnerladies - sometimes when i'm having a conversation about victoria wood people tell me they don't like dinnerladies, and i'm like what the fuck is wrong with you. i can recite most of this show by heart, i've seen it so many times. victoria wood was the most incredible observational comic, and this show is a masterpiece. it's hilarious, it's ingenious. i defy you to find a better, more insightful comic and / or writer than victoria wood. you can't do it. she was the greatest, and this show is the fucking best.
💛 broadchurch - what can i say, i really enjoy the west country, clever mysteries, great writing, lady detectives, raw emotions, and older lesbians (especially when they're as iconic as maggie radcliffe). they really combined a whole lot of my key interests in one brilliant tv programme.
💛 wentworth - the show that brought me back to tumblr after i was absent for years. it's dark, it's brilliant, it's female-driven, there are several sapphic women, and you never know what's coming next. also, bridget westfall is the most incredible character, and a lesbian who gives me so much validation, as well as being so incredibly beautiful i can't get over it (how @ libby tanner) and the love she + franky have for each other is also so incredible and beautiful to see.
feel free to ignore!! tagging @juliewlters, @alisonscotlock, @moxyphinx, @notprincehamlet, @pea-green, @grandselfmythology, @beesarthur

Wait a minute, Mr Postman
Just a daft little moment in time
“YOU LITTLE MONSTER!”
“What the...” Aaron turns to look at him from reading the paper as the shout rings out from upstairs. Not that their house is ever free of noise but usually the kids keep it down to a dull roar. Seb especially, he’s always been the quietest of all of the three. “You or me?”
“I’ll go. Go back to your paper.” He’s not long back from an overnight scrap run and Robert can see just how tired he is. He drops a kiss to the top of his head as he passes, preparing himself to break up whatever ruckus is going on upstairs.
If you’d told him that when he was nearing fifty he’d be happily married, with three kids he would probably have laughed, but here he was, happy as anything.
“Right, what is all the noise about?” Seb’s door is firmly closed, music on too loud, but Robert can hear sniffles coming from the room next door. “Ben?” When he looks the little boy is curled up on his bed in a ball, favourite teddy clutched tightly to him.
At six years old, he’s their baby and probably spoilt just that little bit too much. Too many failures and a week in the special care unit when he was born had left its mark on him and Aaron, not to mention Seb and Ella. It meant that to a certain extent he knew he could get away with pretty much anything. Still, hearing him cry tore Robert’s heart into pieces.
“Hey little man, what’s wrong?” Ben peers up at him, eyes red, cheeks wet with tears. “What’s up, huh?”
“Seb shouted.”
“I heard. Do you know why he was shouting?” A quick shake of the head before he buries himself in the teddy bear is a pretty good giveaway and makes Robert want to chuckle. “Ben.”
“I was playin’ postie’s.” Robert sighed. It was his latest game, every morning if they weren’t quick enough to the mailbox, Ben would collect any post and squirrel it away in his room so he could ‘post’ it later. It was endearing to a point because he was so proud of himself when he delivered it, but he had a bit of a habit of forgetting. “And he shouted.”
“Did you forget one of your letters, hmm?” A tiny nod of the head. “Right, well I’ll talk to your brother, but maybe we need to think of a new game for you?”
“Like posties.”
“I know you do but sometimes we need to open our letters right away. Why don’t you go downstairs and find Papa, hmm? I’ll talk to Seb.”
“He doesn’t like me.”
“Yes he does, don’t be silly. Go on, and if you’re good I’ll take you to the swings when I go and fetch Ella from her friend’s house.”
He watches him go before heading to Seb’s room. He knocks but he doubts Seb hears him over the music so he opens the door a little. “Can I come in?”
“S’pose so.”
“You want to tell me what that was all about?” He sits on the edge of the bed, trying to work out just what might be wrong, whether it’s more than Ben hiding letters.
“It’s him and his stupid game! Why can’t he leave my stuff alone?” It’s half hearted, Seb obviously having calmed down, and Robert knows he adores his little brother.
“He’s just having fun. He doesn’t understand. What was it that he hid?”
“Just a letter.”
“Right, ‘just’ a letter. That’s why you were screaming at him. Come on, I know you, and I also know who taught him his little postman game.” Seb just stares at him for a minute before handing over a crumpled envelope, still unopened. He glanced at it, freezing when he saw the logo of Seb’s preferred university in Manchester.
He’d taken so long to choose the right course, to even know what it was he might want to do with his life and all his hopes were pinned on this one letter.
“Oh mate. You know, he didn’t know. He doesn’t know what this means.”
“Yeah, but...what if they turned me down?” He’s all wide eyed and nervous, like a little boy again. Now’s not the time for Robert to be bemoaning the passing of time and wondering where his cheeky little boy went.
“Well you won’t know until you open it. But...if they have, then they’re idiots.”
“Dad!” It makes him laugh, which was the whole point.
“If they have, then you have other options. We talked them all through remember? So...are you going to put me out of my misery?”
“Will you do it?” Robert takes the envelope back, sliding his thumb in the edge. “Wait! If it’s bad...don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.”
“Well you will won’t you? If I don’t say anything. Right, come on, let’s do this.” Before Seb can stop him he rips the envelope open and reads the letter. He doesn’t say anything, just turns the letter round so Seb can read it. It takes a few seconds but then Seb’s hugging him, letter forgotten, crushed between them. “I’m so proud of you mate.”
“Seb! Seb!” Ben’s shouts get closer and he rushes in before going back to knock like he’s been told. “Papa said I hafta say sorry.”
Robert turns to look and has to laugh, the little boy looks much like he did the day he tipped his bowl of food all over his head in his highchair. Wide eyed and innocent, blue eyes bright as he impatiently blew the dark curls out of his face.
“Come here squirt.” Robert gets up as Seb grabs his brother and drops him onto the bed giggling. Aaron’s in the doorway, smiling, looking a little confused. Robert just hands him Seb’s letter and watches as it registers. Aaron’s always worn his emotions on his sleeve but the past few years it’s even easier to tell what he’s thinking.
“Our little genius.” He’s called him that since the day he started walking, earlier than the books said.
“He’s all grown up. He’ll be moving away soon enough.” He wraps an arm around him, pulling him closer.
“Yeah, and he’ll always come home again.” He reaches up to kiss him before moving away to separate the two boys with promises of chips from Nana Chas and Robert just had to smile at just how perfect everything was.

In honor of the announcement that @woodenovercoats just wrapped recording on their fourth and final 😭😭 season, I give you my review/synopsis for Wooden Overcoats. You know, podcasts have brought me so much joy, entertainment, and information over time, but if I had to pick some desert island #pods , WO would definitely be on the list. It's got that slightly zany, dark humor, Britcom thing that I love. Like Red Dwarf or Faulty Towers. Rudyard and Antigone Funn live on Piffling, one of the smaller Channel islands. Their family's mortuary has been the only game in town going on centuries. Rudyard ostensibly runs the place, all be it *badly*, his twin sister, Antigone, is the slightly odd (Wednesday Adams meets Moaning Myrtle) embalmer, and their underpaid, yet fabulous, can-do-everything assistant, Georgie. Without competition, Rudyard has been severely lazy in his advertising and customer service. His one motto being, "We get the body in the coffin in the ground on time!" Until Eric Chapman arrives. He's a new charismatic undertaker that's just arrived in town and has setup a new, high end, full service mortuary *just across the street* from Funn's. The worst of it is, that he's *so* nice and friendly. Rudyard takes an instant dislike, Antigone develops a crush, and Georgie hardly notices him and just gets on with being awesome. And in Rudyard's pocket, his good friend and confidant, Madeleine the Mouse, is taking copious notes--and narrating--as research for her forthcoming tell all memoir, Memoirs of a Funeral House Mouse. From the agnostic Reverend to the Candy shop owner, every single character is a delight. And the cast is fabulous from Belinda Lang (2point4 children, Rosemary & Thyme) as Madeleine to Felix Trench (Doctors, Hollyoaks) to Beth Ayre (Noise: A Human History, Antigone) as Antigone, and other wonderful actors. It's just the best. If you enjoy well scripted, well produced, funny audio drama then this is for you. I'd say it's family friendly, so much as any other funny britcom with slightly misanthropic main characters, but of course still dealing with death. GO LISTEN! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! SEASON 4 IS ALMOST HERE!!
