30 Days of W.i.t.c.h.versary

Prompt 17: Artistic

I don’t know if I’d be able to create something with the time I have today, but for this prompt, I almost immediately thought of Hay Lin. She’s definitely the most obviously artistically inclined of the group, since she’s always drawing or painting, her Halloween costume was homemade (if by her grandmother rather than herself) and she has a habit of writing on her hand in the moment. Her artistic inclinations also seem to make up a decent portion of her personality in other ways as well, since it appears to influence her clothing choices, her habit of making up words, and arguably even some of her uses of her powers once she becomes a Guardian. Her attacks often have a kind of stylized artsy quality to them.

But to a lesser extent, we also see some artistic inclination in Taranee as well. I feel like it’s more pronounced in the comics than the animated series, as many panels in the comics will depict her photographing things, seemingly as a hobby rather than for a class, and in the later arcs of the series, she becomes interested in dancing, possibly as something she would like to do with her life. I think it can be easy to overlook at first, since Taranee seems to be the brainy one of the group, and for whatever reason, sometimes people have a hard time seeing those qualities together. But I think that’s also part of Taranee’s character and the way she progresses through the series, having a certain way she’s perceived, and trying to break away from that or push back against the parts that are in error. Taranee’s preferred art forms may not be the ones you would immediately expect, but her artistic tendencies are still there.

Lastly, we have Elyon, whose artistic tendencies largely show up in the form of drawing and sketching. In her case, her hobby is largely used to showcase her connection to the world around her, with her sketching up the boy from Cornelia’s dream in “Someday You Will Meet Him,” arguably as a narrative shorthand for her closeness with Cornelia, and a few issues later, drawing the rain from Heatherfield as a means of signifying her homesickness for her former life as she has grown increasingly conflicted about her life in Meridian. Interestingly enough, between her switching to the dark side and then beginning to reconcile with Cornelia, she isn’t shown sketching or drawing, which makes me wonder if her beginning to do so again could be taken to imply that she had lost or abandoned a part of herself, and has begun to regain it.

1. Beginning

I began my WITCH journey when I was still a grade schooler. I chose Hay Lin as my favorite since she was an artist like me, but no matter how I tried I could never relate to her.

My love for Orube began even back then. She was just so funny and adorable and unique; she often fought with the guardians and yet she was considered an ally. I liked that.
