Back back back again, and I don't know guys, I think we should all just totally stab Caesar! Welcome back to a new fortnight of fics that I’ve read and loved recently.

Are You Writing From the Heart? by @luckshiptoshore is now complete!! Congrats Luck! Full disclosure, Luck is one of my very best friends, but that just means I know not only how much of a talented fic writer she is, but also how much of her heart and soul she poured into writing this love letter to queer storytelling, season 4 Destiel as a romcom, meta text (and subtext), and finding out who you really are when society and your upbringing is fighting against you. Castiel is a ghostwriter for L.S. Shore's Supernatural novels about Neal and his brother. Caught in a storytelling rut, Cas finds himself adding the fallen angel character of Bel...what could possible go wrong? Meanwhile at his local writing coffee shop spot, he meets the handsome stranger Dean who is an up and coming standup comedian and Supernatural fanboy. They because firm friends, but that's definitely it because Cas is straight....right?! Following these two dummies as they FAIL TO USE THEIR WORDS is a total joy, as Luck's humorous and emotional writing paired with her eye for detail is so very on point, and I'm so excited more people will finally get to read this story in full.

I cannot tell you how goddamn excited I was to get this email notification and finally be back in 91w world, and to witness these early stages of Dean and Cas' relationship through Dean's eyes at last. This barely needs a rec because it's THEE 91w Dean, but komodobits hasn't missed a beat in getting back inside their heads and I was once again swept away by this iconic love story against the odds. Head the trigger warnings as always, this is truly on the front lines as a medic in a war zone. Truth & despair by @shallowseeker was a recent discovery and such a fascinating read! It's set in a post-15x18 verse, but importantly it features a fun Sam narrative perspective that delights in his lens by...being a bit of an unsympathetic oblivious dummy (affectionate). I really appreciate a crunchy Sam characterisation and oooboy does this pay off. Dean is steeped in his grief for Cas, and Sam is oh so concerned. He reaches out to Mia Vallens to understand his own grieving, and that leads to him making a discovery...Dean's memories of Cas' death aren't what he claims happened. With the unwelcome reappearance of Chuck (he lost...didn't he?) and LITERAL sinkholes appearing in the fabric of the universe, can they figure out what's happening to save Cas and save the world? This wip plays with physics, theology and narrative fuckery in such intriguing ways. I can't wait to see how it wraps up in the next two chapters.
The Leap by @friendofcarlotta started reading this one when Tina reshared it on Leap Day...because of course. I'd actually read it before but it more than lived up to the reread. 'Castiel Krushnic is a police officer in Soviet-occupied East Berlin. He is also gay, in a city where that’s a dangerous thing to be. One night, he meets Dean Winchester, a mechanic from the American sector. Their mutual attraction is instant, and a convenient hookup quickly turns into a passionate love affair that defies all rules and expectations.' Meticulously researched, emotional, heartrending and thought provoking. I highly recommend taking the leap on this fic!

Hey, sorry us anons have turned you into some sort of unofficial spokesperson for the 91w fic 😅, but I think in your last ask about this fic you mentioned the characters are left with permanent injuries? I’m interested in reading the fic, but ngl that left me a bit scared. Can you tell me what those injuries are? Thanks!
that's totally fine anon! i will put the details behind the cut.
i'm going to keep it as spoiler free as i possibly can in terms of the actual specific details on the events of the story. however, essentially, i'll tell you where the characters end up - emotionally and physically - so you'll basically know more or less what happens in the story and where it ends. so obviously: SPOILER WARNING.
the positives are: cas and dean work out the mental issues of being closeted queer men in the 1940s - they go through a period of extremely toxic and horrible behaviour (cas far more than dean) - but it this is all worked out and resolved. they are constantly in danger of being found out about their relationship in the military, but never caught. they both survive the war and end up with a very healthy, mutually loving relationship, and they are accepted as they are by sam and his family. they are super in love and sweet and endearing with one another.
the negatives are: cas and dean both sustain considerable physical and mental traumas. at the very end, cas becomes partly disfigured in his face, and loses part of his sight and hearing. dean loses a leg. cas is also suicidal at some points during the story. they both deal with a good deal of mental trauma from the war many years later. they also need to stay closeted in public spaces (and this is one of the reasons i rarely consume any stories about vintage gays.)
overall, being unprepared for the last part was what was the most difficult for me, but i think if i had known beforehand what was coming, i may have handled it a bit better.
as a full story, it is fantastically written - the sexual tension starts up STRAIGHT away, and that in particular is incredibly well built up. the battles are genuinely well written and interesting to read, but very violent. the way they resolve their toxic issues are also very well done - the behaviours are not forgiven, but worked on and become part of important character and relationship development.
overall, if you find the above things triggering, i would give this story a pass. personally, i wish that the ending had been on the rosier side, because they go through so many awful things during the war. i would have liked to see them deal with less of the physical traumas. but the author was trying to stay as realistic as possible, and it's consistent with the tone of the story overall.
if this is something you can stomach, i would still recommend the story. it's really beautifully written and i'm glad i read it. in terms of a re-read, i'm not sure i would be able to handle it, but i'm still happy i gave it a shot.

So Many Fanfics So Little Time
This is just my list, I have seen so many (but if you want to use it it’s all yours too!). I’m not a writer. But I am a hell of a reader. Voracious one might argue. I just wanted to track my progress through the weeds of the absolutely never ending supply of Destiel and Cockles fanfic.
Read on if you want to see what I’ve read, and what I’ve thought. I am but one person with opinions - some of them may be unpopular - some of them you might agree with, but if you find something you haven’t read here, I encourage you to do so.
Honestly, this is just so I can track what I have read already, and when my friends ask, I can reference something easily. I have found some different fics on all kinds of ‘best of’ lists all over the interwebs. And I love recs - so rec away friends.
As someone who reads a solid 40 novels a year typically, I don’t come by the “I read a lot” innocently. I do actually read a LOT. When not reading fanfic (a new obsession, all things being fair), I usually read a lot of Fantasy/high fantasy, romance/erotica, and or YA (yeah, that was a bit of a ride no?). So from this one might digress that I like fluffy, cute stories, complicated and supernatural/paranormal type stories, and I sure do not shy away from violence or smut (or maybe violence with smut? *smirk*).
I have read all of these in the last 2-3 months (I will continue to add as I go). I had never read a fanfic until 2-3 months ago. A lot of these wonderful people are on here, and I mean you no offence by not directly tagging you - I’m still learning how to actually properly use this site. Links to AO3 are included (and I love you all).
These aren’t necessarily in any real order - I did read T&S first, followed by 91W, and 4LW...after that it’s just a shit show of Long or Short, Destiel or Cockles - smorgasbord. Some of these are the most popular Fics out there, and others I’ve never seen recc’d anywhere (just sort of accidentally happened upon them). So let’s get to it, shall we?
Twist and Shout - ok look. I understand the stigma associated with this one, but it was the FIRST one I read. It was the ball that shot me down the hill, and I haven’t stopped since. So. I loved it. I CRIED like a baby. SOBBED. It was not the quality of the writing but the way the story was developed and delivered. I have Never Cried Like This Reading a Story IN MY LIFE. It’s a rite of passage. Read It and have an opinion - it doesn’t need to be mine.

Ninety-One Whiskey - aka 91W, it is mentioned so much, and is SO worth the read. I continued my dive into the war fics (not typically my bag really and here I was reading 2 in a row). There are a couple of followup stories as well to this series (and yes, I’ve read them all). Although I’ll say that the original is my favourite. I often got lost in a bit of the War/Tactical descriptions, but would recommend it to anyone anyway. Ugh...the “stolen moments”...they were at the same time tragic and the most amazing things ever. You feel me? no? go read it.

Four Letter Word for Intercourse - aka 4LW. OMG just, OMG. I loved this story. I loved it so much. I think I read it in a day. Devoured it. It’s so HOT. Just read it. If you haven’t you’re missing out. LEMME AT IT. I loved “knowing the secret”, and had some major anxiety about that realization dawning (I had to take a breath, and be like, no, no, this is gonna be a mess, but it’s gonna be SO GOOD - I was not disappointed). There’s more than one work here too - read them all. PLEASE.

Memories Bring Back Memories (Bring Back You) - This was the first Sobs one I read, but it sent me on a spree. this is the Memory Loss one. I have one piece of advice here - read everything by Sobsicles. You can thank me later...just go to her page, and fucking sort to supernatural (or not, read it all!) I’d list them but I’d fucking seriously be here all day. Also, her tags make me laugh so hard.

Orpheus - I love this one too, Tattooed!Cas, my LOVE. paired with Mechanic!Dean, my HEART, #help. Read this one in one evening as well. (I was on a roll). It’s a one night stand that turns into more (much like my last relationship)....hmm...maybe this is why I was pulled in - although to be fair that is the last similarity to my shitty love life! I do not remember how I stumbled onto this one (tattooed Cas may have been the draw...tbh). Read the warnings though, there is some triggering stuff in this one - but if you can handle it, it’s definitely worth the read.

Ad Astra - This is another short(ish) one, just one chapter. And by that I mean that this is written like a very long poem. Cas as a star who has visited Dean many times over the years of his life, that culminates in 4x01 barn scene. It’s ‘awe’ sad. ‘puppy dog eyes’ sad. The writing format took me a bit to understand what was happening - it’s my lack of poetry knowledge, not the writing.

hello! this is so incredibly out-of-the-blue, I'm sorry, but here goes: so I know 91 Whiskey is like, one of THE defining deancas fics of this modern era, and i have been tempted many a time to read it... but I'm also Jewish and have learned to be very, very wary of WWII fics, particularly vis-a-vis how they deal with the Holocaust. I decided a while back not to read 91w if I didn't know how it was gonna go, but your liveblogging (?) while reading and amazing final review is honestly the first thing to have me re-considering. Since it seems to be 91w book club hours on your blog, i figured i'd shoot my shot! haha. no pressure at all, but would you mind if i ask you (or your 91 Whiskey-reading followers) a couple of questions about the content and vibe of the fic?
If it helps, I'm not worried about brief mentions or looking for detailed trigger warnings - heck, I'm doing a college thesis on antisemitic violence right now. It's more about how the topic is handled on the whole - does the Holocaust or Jewishness play a role in the plot? Do real-life sites of genocide feature in the fictional narrative? etc. I'm not saying it's necessarily bad if 'yes,' but I've spent too much time intensely studying (and in some ways, living with) that history not to be picky af about how it's used. 🤷🏽♀️ then again, this sounds like a really exceptional piece of literature in a lot of ways and i would also figuratively die for legend and hero komodobits. since (for better or for worse) I don't mind anywhere near as much when people fictionalize WWII on the whole, it seemed like it was worth asking about to see if it's something I might want to read after all. :) thanks so much for your time, and again, no pressure at all!

To answer both of your questions I’d say no and no? Idk maybe my followers have something to add, but I haven’t noticed any anticemitic violence while reading. I mean, it’s overall heavy on violence, but not this kind. Tbh I was truly impressed with detailed description of military operations... So, it’s your choice, to read or not! But if there’s anything else you need to ask - you’re welcome!

hey! i was introduced to 91w thru ur blog and i was just wondering if u knew where i could find the in-depth trigger warnings?? the link on the ao3 fic doesn't appear to work and i can't find the author's blog (if they even have one at this point in time) if not, no worries!!
unfortunately I can’t find an in-depth list :( the author’s blog is up but they left the fandom and deleted their posts, including that one (which is unfortunate). i would err on the side of caution though and say that if there’s anything you’re triggered by, you may want to avoid the fic. it has a lot of troubling elements.
i will say though that the author has put trigger warnings at the beginning of some particularly difficult chapters, so you wouldn’t be reading completely ignorant of what’s going to happen

idk if its precisely depressing but it can be a bit triggering :( the author has trigger warnings for every chapter tho so if you can pass that i promise you its worth it.

Yeah unfortunately I’m not sure where to find the content warning list. But (though it’s probably because I’m desensitized lol) so far I haven’t found 91w particularly upsetting. Umm I can give you some, but also remember I haven’t finished so it’s not comprehensive
Significant deaths and explicit description of those deaths
Blood and gore
PTSD/grief
Homophobia (and plenty of homophobic slurs)
Dubcon (they both want it but some specific lines might be triggering to people with a history of SA)
Explicit sexual language and imagery
Racism (specifically anti-black racism)
Smoking and drinking
