fanmade 4k remaster of the wire prequel "webisodes" originally released in 2007. HUGE credit to jeremy hinen for the work that went into this remastering!
full text from OP's reddit post under the cut:
This was a project I'd been meaning to get to for a while! Hopefully you enjoy. Here's the background info I posted with the video on Youtube:
Originally aired as webisodes on HBO.com in 2007, these three prequel vignettes offer the only canonical flashbacks to several characters on HBO's "The Wire". They are some of the earliest period piece attempts by the show's braintrust, before they would eventually work on projects like Show Me a Hero or The Deuce. Prior to now, fans of the show have only ever been able to view the prequels online in 360p (and one bizarrely resized 480p clip). They're hard to look at, especially compared to the updated remaster.
With the re-release of The Wire following HBO's HD remaster in 2014, consumers who purchased the complete edition of the show finally had access to a higher bit-rate, 16:9 version of the prequels. To my knowledge, this version has never been shared online, and retains color/contrast closer to the 4:3 releases. While the 16:9 version displays far fewer bitrate issues than its original online release, there are still shots that suffer from compression artifacts and minor aliasing.
I split all the individual shots into Topaz, and used several Artemis AI models to repair the footage before upscaling to 4K.Using Davinci Resolve, I then recolored the prequels shot-by-shot to match the look and feel of the HD Remasters. The compression on the 16:9 version also resulted in a loss of the film texture very visible in the Remasters, so I finished by overlaying a scan of Kodak Vision 200T 5274 film grain – matching the film used by the show.
My hope is that these changes look subtle enough to remain indistinguishable from the main episodes, although this remaster does expose some production details the original crew never anticipated being seen; like the fact that Young Omar's scar is drawn on with marker. I've done my best to keep it from looking too glaring.
These prequels are now preserved here for any ardent fans of the The Wire to enjoy.

i genuinely love when you can tell an older show was Not made with high quality video viewing in mind. i am watching knight rider and constantly seeing all the little mistakes they surely brushed under the rug thinking nobody would see them on their crunchy little CRTs back in the 80s, that are huge attention grabbers now in HD fullscreen on my 3 foot computer monitor
the biggest one of course is all the drivers/controllers for the (in-universe) self driving car, kitt. there's guys tucked down in the footwells who can't always stay out of the shot. there's a guy who has a Car Seat Suit to blend in and look like the drivers seat from a distance, but you can always tell when that's the method they're using for a particular shot because its so much thicker than the passenger seat next to it and the headrest is missing it's cutout section. in at least one instance he starts taking the suit off too early, on a focus shot of the damn car, so its REAL visible.
all the extremely obvious stunt drivers or performers who look nothing like the character they're supposed to be
props, such as animals, vanishing from the car interior for stunt/race sequences.
the production crew (or their shadows) being visible in the background. only at a glance, but its especially hilarious in shots where nobody else is supposed to be around
the camera panning out from a sound stage set far enough that you can actually see over the edges of the set and into the stage they were filming in. mostly this happens with their truck trailer mobile unit thing.
this one isn't a mistake but every time the car "turbo jumps" they CLEARLY hide the ramp behind another car, a prop, the environment, and its just. so charming. sometimes its blatantly on screen just for a moment. like... of Course in real life this car isn't magically leaping 20 feet, of course its a ramp, but it's still so silly and fun to be reminded of how they were doing those stunts to begin with.
also not really a mistake but related, the bracket they keep on the front of the car for stunt work.... is just left on half the time. cuz it's a pain to take on and off.
and there are more examples that are more unique that haven't cemented themselves in my head well yet, but these are the more notable or common things i see and it's really charming. if i'm not giggling to myself noticing the "seams" and flaws and so human imperfections of your show or movie what EVEN is the point. hollywood is too flashy these days i think!

I just found something very important.
You know Shock Spears? The things that Irkens use as weapons.
Tumblr media
These things.
We’ve never seen a really detailed look at them because they’re always in the background or not in proper focus in the scenes they’re in.
And that’s a real shame because not only are they cool, going by the pictures above they all seem slightly unique compared to one another.
EXCEPT I KNOW WHERE A HIGH DEFINITION HD QUALITY SHOCK SPEAR CAN BE FOUND!
Tumblr media
NICKELODEON ALL STAR FUCKING BRAWL. ZIM USES HIS OWN SHOCK SPEAR AS PART OF HIS MOVESET!
That means that if someone just looked into the files of NASB, they’re be able to find the model of Zim’s spear and we’d have the best look at a Shock Spear we’ve ever seen. And on top of that it’s ZIM’S shock spear, and from what we’ve seen so far all shock spears are at least slightly unique, AND from the picture here of Zim using his shock spear it looks like it has some sort of unique design on it with some blue parts visible on the spear.
PLEASE TELL ME THAT SOMEONE KNOWS HOW TO NAVIGATE CODE FOR THIS. I WILL LEARN CODE AND DO IT MYSELF IF I HAVE TO.

Heathers (1988) is a masterclass in costuming and color usage
Red is both Heather Chandler's (HC) color and one of the school colors, if someone is wearing it they're either popular or powerful at that moment, often both.
Green is Heather Duke's (HD) color, background characters wearing it are often mousy or nerds with zero power, it's the color of the trodden on.
Yellow is Heather McNamara's (HM) color, the color of kindness but also a desire to fit in. She's not perfect, but she's better than the others.
Blue is Veronica's color symbolizing friendship and loyalty.
Black is JD's symbolizing dark intent and guilt.
Neutrals belong to all but often show a meaninglessness or loss of identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Veronica and JD meet she's wearing more black than blue, only her tights show her identity and she finds him threatening jocks fun. At the minimart before the party she'd again wearing a fair amount of black but also a grey sweater with a blue undertone, she's identity-less because the party is Heather's idea. And the party is lit in red to symbolize the popularity potential to be found at it.
Tumblr media
Again in neutral grey blues with black when she and JD kill Heather. The darkness creeps up on her in the form of her tights.
Tumblr media
When news is spreading through the school about HC's death HM is wearing a blue top over the yellow bottoms, she's the one loyal to HC in the moment while Veronica is in black because she feels guilty. HD is in a green corset, which I'll come back to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The navy of Veronica's tights is more clear as she sits with JD at his house but the main thing here is they are visibly a matched set, which is again the case at the funeral as Veronica wears a boxy jacket that sits similarly to JD's duster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the double date HM is in greys, she's not excited about how it's going, she's very much an afterthought here to her date and it's shown. Veronica wears a bright blue shirt because she agreed to come out of friendship and loyalty to Heather.
At school the next day Veronica wears a full blue outfit, she's free of HC's influence and is herself except for the black hat symbolizing JD's influence in her head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Veronica and JD plot the deaths of Kurt and Ram JD is free of his jacket for the first time, he's fairly vulnerable with her here and has adopted her blues over the greys of his pants and undershirt. Veronica is still in her blue school outfit but the shadows show the darkness of JD's influence. This is again shown in the clearing as she wears her blues in her skirt but has a black shirt showing JD's influence in her heart.
Tumblr media
After the death of Kurt and Ram Veronica wears purple, she's gained power over the school and of people in general as she shapes things with death bringing her blue more red. JD wears a red shirt with his blacks, he's aware of the power he's gained both over the school and over Veronica.
Tumblr media
HD's shirt under her greens is pinkish when JD gives her HC's old bow, showing her power emerging since HC isn't there to push her down anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Betty Veronica is in blue again under the same neutrals Betty wears as a nobody. She's reconnecting with her past friendships and pushing aside her popularity.
HD and HM show up, HM in all yellow, but HD is in red clothing for the first time. And in this she's wearing a corset very similar to the one immediately post HC's death. She's taken her own power from that day and changed it to the kind HC wielded over the school.
Tumblr media
As HD and JD begin to work together she adopts black to her image, the red is nestled inside of it similar to his look post the deaths of Kurt and Ram.
Tumblr media
As JD preps the bombs to take to school we see him at his most vulnerable, he believes Veronica dead and has stripped just to a black T-shirt. The blue background envelopes him as he works.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Veronica's outfit when she goes to confront and stop JD at school includes the same grey cardigan she wore to kill Kurt and Ram but this time her shirt is blue. She knows who she is and what she wants again and JD's influence is reduced.
After the showdown with JD Veronica is left with blood on her face that leads the eye to HC's now further stolen hair bow. Veronica has taken that piece of power from HD and is using it to extend her friendship to Martha whom they'd bullied in the beginning showing she's ditched the Heathers for good.

Nyx's Cork Board, pt II
Tumblr media
Moving on to the left side of the board!
Here's the link to part I, if you missed it.
Nyx has several interesting pictures. The first is a family portrait with Nyx’s mother and presumably father (based on the rather extreme resemblance to Nyx), the kids, and an older man. Who is the older man? An uncle? A grandfather? Another father?
Young Nyx apparently has already found his signature hairstyle, with his sides shaved. Based on their relative sizes and face shapes, I’d guess Nyx is around nine to eleven here, and Selena around seven, but it’s hard to tell at this age and level of details. Your thoughts?
Tumblr media
It’s so nice to actually see not only these important ladies, but some examples of female Galahdan fashion. Both have long hair, though Mama for sure has hers pulled up, and both are wearing these chain-like hairpieces. Many cultures have unbound hair as a sign of an unmarried or younger woman, perhaps that’s the case here. Selena’s jewelry goes over her hair, and Mama’s under, which could be another indicator of maturity. Selena has two braids visible, one under each ear, though the details of them are not very clear between the damage and the darkness of the picture.
Neither woman has visible tattoos in this shot, though that doesn’t mean they don’t have them. Both appear to be slightly made up, with Mama wearing foundation and possibly lipstick and both women with eyeshadow or liner. Though that could just be the Standard Female Eyeliner that is just how movies imagine all women look constantly.
Mama is wearing black with a high collar and long, fitted sleeves – fashion choice, women’s wear or widow’s wear? Selena has a lighter, looser shirt with a pattern on it, with a v neck that might possibly imply overlapping panels like a kimono and a polka-dotted scarf tied around her neck.
The heavy candlestick or lamp in the back of this photo (seen more easily in zoomed-out pictures) and the tiles on the wall (or square, glazed windows?) next to a possible incense burner, vase, or statue, might indicate this is at home, or perhaps a shrine? Either way, the photo, despite being crisp, is badly damaged and hard to make out.
Map of Galahd
Star Junco has convincingly argued that this is a map of Galahd underneath all the other items here. In addition to her excellent map analysis, I want to talk about the “x” on one of the islands. Nyx’s hometown, perhaps? Or one of his parents’? Or something else?
Tumblr media
In the cluster of artwork at the bottom, two of the pictures appear to be less formal, shall we say. The lower watercolor-like shows two black-haired figures with wide open mouths – one with a ponytail and pink patterned dress, one with shorter hair in a blue shirt with a red cape – either swimming or flying on a blue background above green plants. I think this was definitely done by a kid – one of Axis or Pelna’s theorized kids, maybe? Or someone Nyx helped? Or perhaps, judging by the bangs and relative size of the images, a drawing of Selena and Nyx by a young Selena? It looks rather like Superman, which makes us wonder about Lucis’s comic book scene.
The next image is a painting of a malboro holding an orange sphere and is labeled Nyx very neatly. While this could be another kid drawing, I’m inclined to say this was painted by a glaive or adult – it’s not super stylized, and while not sophisticated, seems to have a fair amount of control. Perhaps someone mad at Nyx for stealing their orange? Whatever it shows, there’s definitely a story here.
Under the more home-made art, there appears to be a woodblock-style print or perhaps detailed drawing of an almost meso-american type figure surrounded by a border of possibly hearts. It might possibly represent Quetzalcoatl based on some of what it is holding – a snake and a scepter or weapon – as well as the spines and feathers on the back and the spirals on its chest and ear like a shell or comma. See:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(images courtesy of the wikipedia article on Quetzalcoatl)
The other item the drawing holds could be the fire serpent of Huitzilopochtli, a deity associated with war and the sun, and the weapon itself has interesting lightning/war associations. Is this a Galahdan depiction of Ramuh? Bahamut? Someone else? Or perhaps a dawn/sun mythos, as Quetzalcoatl is associated with the formation of the fifth sun? Some more mythology and archaeology information on some of the symbols and Quetzalcoatl can be found here and here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As best I can decipher, the certificate says “Nyx Ulric: XXXXX to the XXX XXX lands beyond the wall. ??? V 744” and is signed Regis Lucis Caelum in cursive, the only instance of cursive in the series I know of. Interestingly, it doesn’t have any titles for Regis, nor any ornaments on the paper itself, which is very crisp still. It looks almost like Nyx printed this off himself, as a matter of fact, and Regis’ signature is so regular it’s either a stamp or a font. Hmmm…
Tumblr media
Selena’s letter is also so crisp it looks like a photocopy. The limits of CGI, probably. It’s much more legible: “Dear Nyx, Happy 20th Birthday! It’s weird to write a letter when we live in the same house, but you’ve been working (I think?) so late that we never get to talk, so you’ll just have to read this in my voice. I made you a good luck charm to commemorate the occasion, pretty sweet, right? I put my … it, so hold onto it, will ya?”
T_T What is the good-luck charm? It could be the Lil Malbuddy charm, but that looks too manufactured. Part of his uniform, maybe? The Malboro!Nyx drawing?
The “(I think)?” is often construed to mean Nyx is doing resistance work, but as discussed above that’s slightly confusing timeline-wise. One of Nyx’s bios says he is a "Native son of Galahd who fought alongside the local Resistance before arriving in Insomnia to serve Regis in the Kingsglaive." Does that suggest Niflheim was there before the attack, or that he participated in it for a very short time between the attack and going to Insomnia? Maybe Selena died in a later raid? Perhaps when they say 'resistance' they really mean something more like 'militia' and they were going outside of Galahd to help. Or perhaps it was just laziness and the rule of making it relate to the protagonist as much as possible >.>
Tumblr media
Finally, let’s look at the board as a whole, all these memories topped by a cluster of plants and stiff ribbons of red, green, white, and yellow. The bouquet appears to mainly be green leaves, perhaps with some flowers hanging down. If these are artificial, could this be Selena’s charm? It doesn’t quite look like either sasaki or shikimi, the two plants most associated with Japanese shrines from my quick research. I wonder what they are?
Propped up like this with the incense burner and candle, plus the bouquet at the top, it definitely seems to have spiritual significance. A memorial seems the most common guess, but there are definitely living people on it as well – the picture of young Nyx and Libertus in uniform plus the letter from Regis seem to apply to more than just the dead or lost. And the haphazard organization – overlapping images, unused pins at the top – seems to imply something more casual. What are your thoughts?
Thanks again for sticking with us through this whole thing! Again, if you haven't yet done so, please fill out our survey for our next event!

Tolkien (books) have canonical trans characters if you're deep enough in to know some trivia about in-universe languages (which isn't great representation to have confirmation of it buried a couple layers deep, but it's about as much as you could expect from the 1930/40s).
Whereas the movies completely ignores anything about this so there's no representation in the movies at all.
And Alexander Seddig wanted to be an elf in the movies and they literally told him they didn't want any actors of colour to be elves, so...yeah i'm not sure why your friend would think the movies were somehow more diverse.
(I haven't seen the hobbit movies, it's possible they're slightly better. but Martin Freeman did make jokes about how it didn't matter he was tiny and ugly, he'd just roofie his female costars and date-rape them if they turned him down).
I'd be interested to know what characters you're calling canonically trans- there are plenty of characters who are implied to be some flavor of LGBT if you use certain contextual readings but none stated outright, which is what I'm using as "canonical" since JRRT and his son are no longer alive to tell us.
My [former] friend did not believe the movies were much better in that regard, in fact somehow they were worse with racial representation as every actor of color was part of a Bad Guys Only race or used in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it background shot (there's a Maori ranger in a scene in Gondor, for instance, if you look over Faramir's shoulder to see him- he's on screen for roughly 2.5 seconds and only visible in HD). The Hobbit was better in regards to Laketown having some amount of racial variety (which fanboys screeched about btw) but all of the talking characters were, once again, white. Of course the Hobbit also gave us multiple transmisogynistic jokes, multiple fat jokes, multiple ableist jokes, starred human shitstains in large speaking roles, and broke verbal agreement with an actress who signed on with the contingency that she WOULDN'T be reduced to a stupid invented romance, so that [former] friend didn't really love those movies either.
Man. You've just reminded me WHY I changed my main blog's url once I learned about what type of person Cumberbatch really is.

Meynnart Wewyck’s workshop-part 4: Henry VII
One again, these are merely my suggestions of which paintings I’d like experts to exhamine in order to determine if they are by Wewyck’s workshop.
This time we are focusing on Henry VII and in part 5 also, because there is damn so many portraits of him! I keep finding more even while searching for portraits of other people!
Straight away we have two very good candidates. Another versions of portrait already proven to be Henry(in the middle) by Wewyck.
Tumblr media
Both of them deserve to be tested imo. Because one might be original from life and remaining posthumous copies. Maybe during thorough exhamination they’d figure out which one. So far most paintings experts identified as Meynnart Wewyck’s workshop are from 1510s. And 1520s style is very different, and it is possible that 1500s style would be also very different. But as i said in part 1, you need to compare a lot of paintings to figure that out and it is entirely possible workshop had 3 or even more stages! Not just 2 we know abbout now.
I.)Henry VII, Anglessey Abbey:
Tumblr media
Link:https://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/515569
Anglessey Abbey says diptych’s dendrology came with result of 1512-1520, so this should be posthumous painting! But they don’t say if they tested both paintings in the diptych(and each could have been done at different times.) and those two paintings don’t match each other, the other is horribly altered.
This painting was once in different frame and sides and bit under hands is still not cleaned off properly(maybe it is not possible to clean it idk, sometimes it is unsafe to do without damage to the painting.
Imo at least inch or two are missing in lower part of painting.
You can barely spot it but his hands rest of the grey ledge(here looking black) and actually on golden orb just as Elizabeth’s were.
Tumblr media
Receuil d’Arras shows Henry VII with golden orb too, though in different hand. I am not sure what is the significance of this gesture, but Henry VIII is depicted like this too(see part 1).
You have to look in different angle to spot that there was once rounded decorative top-matching proven version.
Tumblr media
The background gives us the same green damask pattern as in some other paintings, including proven Wewyck’s work:
Tumblr media
Though emphasise once again, that this was very popular pattern and was used in many paintings outside of England.
Tumblr media
But I’d like to point out few easily overlooked similiarities and differences between this painting and version of it already proven to be by Wewyck.
Tumblr media
Aside from ledge and orb being missing on proven version, there are:
Pearls and heart shaped pendant on carcanet missing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brooch with 3 pearls(on hat)
Tumblr media
-with or without ruby. I found many depictions of hat brooch with 3 pearls with ruby and only one other without. So I am not sure if it was gilded over on proven version, or if he had two similiar brooches.
Shape of hat and texture of hair and slightly different shape of nose.
Tumblr media
Proven version has much roundish shape and that slight pointy end on  forehead is barely there. Hair is of different exture, but still has slight wave to it, in both time is gray going to dark(one more than other), not even close to white hair Virgil described. (Though imo it probably wasn’t white but light grey hair.)
Hands
Tumblr media
In Anglesey Abbey’s version his thumb is freekishly long and thin, and his index finger bends slightly differently. Rings are also much larger.
Slight differences in his robes, how fabric twists. But actually that pattern of cloth of gold is on proven version too, just way less visible.
Also both have red velvet trim on egde of their fur, which you can barely spot in both:
Tumblr media
And that is important detail, because next version doesn’t have it(maybe due to alterations).
II.) Portrait of Henry VII Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands Art Collection
Tumblr media
Link to wikipedia where it is in HD:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portrait_of_Henry_VII,_King_of_England_Cultural_Heritage_Agency_of_the_Netherlands_Art_Collection_NK1426.jpg
It’s dated as c.1530 but imo it’s older than that.(i can be wrong.)
The I. and II. way more similar to each other than to proven version. The hair is between dark brown and grey(which could be darkening of pigments), pattern of cloth of gold is more visible, hats are more alike(brooches are same), both have heart-shaped pendants on their carcanets and at least 1 pearl on its end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pearl hiding away(overpainted when background was done or redone).
Tumblr media
There are but few differences. Netherlandish is  showing of more of cuts on sleeves and clearly has fur lining on those cuts and around wrist(which Anglessey doesn’t have), proven version has mere hint of it.
Rose is different and hands though more shaped as proven version, have thumb of his left hand(on right) showing. That is very odd actually.
Tumblr media
No way his hand merely rests on ledge, the thumb wouldn’t be under rest of the fingers!  Those four fingers aren’t so straight either. Try it yourself, but when i twist my hand to such position, it seems to me either as evil witch claw or as if i was grasping something roundish. Perhaps golden orb.
And yet despite all above, the face matches more the proven painting(on right):
Tumblr media
I don’t know what to make of it. Perhaps experts can get us some clarity.
Tbh, i just love details of the hat brooch in II.
Tumblr media
There is actually 4th version of this painting. But beware the face is horrendous!
III.)Henry VII (1457-1509), Victoria and Albert Museum:
Tumblr media
Link: https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O128343/henry-vii-1457-1509-oil-painting-unknown/
Those floral decorations on top were also found on portrait of Richard III from National Portrait Gallery(said to be late 16th century work). Idk if these were originally on our Henry too, or if it is later alteration.
VAM’s description simply states this painting is 16th century work-translation:we didn’t test it and don’t know.
You’d think these two are pair,  but when you check the dimensions of both, H of hers is just 70% and width just 60% of his, so hers is smaller and narrower!
Tumblr media
But they probably are at least altered by same painter.
By the way I., II. and III. are only paintings of Henry VII in existence(that I know of) which also have that heart-shaped pendant.
I won’t point out all the similiarities/ differences with the others again, as you already know what to look at and that ledge is pretty much unmistakable.
But few more differences, which are hard to spot:
Cloth of gold bending up vs down:
Tumblr media
In III. the ring is on his middle finger instead of on his ring finger(which can be simply honest mistake by painter, even on original):
Tumblr media
The middle of the rose has gilded pattern:
Tumblr media
And last thing I am not sure about. It’s the velvet, his shading, how it is painted.
Tumblr media
To me it looks very alike as velvet in proven paintings. I can be mistaken though, and even if it is by Wewyck it can also be posthumous.
Problem with it is, that Henry VIII is never painted with grey ledge during his reign. Is it the case his got cut off or there never was any? Does it mean we are looking at copies after his reign? Or the style was prefered prior to his reign?
Could it be the earliest style of Wewyck’s workshop? I wondered. But then the trail went cold and I found nothing similiar for long while and instead focused on gathering versions of well-known paintings of Henry VII(and plenty there are!)
It bothered me, just as Virgil’s description bothered me and fact that somebody overpainted some of these paintings so heavily! Why?!
Perhaps this painting holds answer to that:
IV) Henry VII (Masters) (1457-1509), Society of Antiquaries of London, Burlighton House:
Tumblr media
Link to Society of Antiquaries:
https://www.sal.org.uk/collections/explore-our-collections/collections-highlights/henry-vii-masters-1457-1509/
According to Society of Antiquaries it is ‘Likely painted before 1540′
So they don’t know.
But the painting is the worst case of pigment instability I’ve seen.
(Darkening of pigments is also example of pigment instability-at least I call it pigment instability, experts probably use some other term.)
Only the rose is not washed out(and I cannot rule out it is altered). Crimson velvet turned to orange! Light peach colour at some places!
If this happened to other paintings, it might explain the heavy overpainting.
I’ve seen MANY paintings of Henry VII and indeed it is similiar to many of them and could be altered version of some of them.
But what if it isn’t? There is 2nd version of this painting.
Tumblr media
Both have cloth of gold lined with fur, different edges of the gown over it, rose with pattern in middle:
Tumblr media
Bends on fabric of the sleeves and hand twisting same way(ring missing):
Tumblr media
And lighter grey hair:
Tumblr media
V: Henry VII in Christ Church, University of Oxford:
Tumblr media
Link: https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/henry-vii-14571509-229296/search/keyword:henry-vii--referrer:global-search/page/2
(Don’t ask me why some univerities put their art collection on Art Uk instead of their webpage. IDK! But gives very few information about the painting.)
Obviously the painting is very dark, but perhaps it was its saving grace, grime protecting the pigments from becoming unstable.
Virgil described Henry VII thus:
His body was slender, but well built and strong; his height above the average. His appearance was remarkably attractive and his face was cheerful, especially when speaking; his eyes were small and blue, his teeth few, poor and blackish; his hair was thin and white; his complexion sallow.
And this is the only painting which fits the description. He is slim, seems to be tall and yet as no weakling/doesn’t look very ill. His hair is lighter grey(with small wave to it), his eyes are small, probably blue and look warm. Not as ice-berg in other versions.
When I say he doesn’t look ill i mean it in terms of his overall figure, his body is still strong despite him going grey. Virgil says Henry is strong but he also says he is sallow.  You might think of sallow complexion as of yellowish or dark. But sallow can also mean unhealthy pale. Not everybody has that glow to the skin, we associate with health. Especially people with very pale skin, often can seem to bit sick of us.
Imo this is the difference between having fair white skin-very pale with that healthy glow and sallow white skin-white pale without healthy glow.
(Are you listening Anne Boleyn fans? Your lady probably wasn’t troubled by jaundice nor was dark-skinned/olive-skinned. She just looked bit sick. Which I’d be too if Henry VIII kept persuing me. I’d feel vomit raise up constantly. Ok maybe not early on in his reign, but later yep. I’m preparing entire post decidated to how many people he had killed.)
But you might disagree and think the painting doesn’t show Henry VII’s real features, you’ve seen his paintings and you’ve seen photos of his tomb and it is not him!
Tumblr media
But isn’t genetics wonderful thing?

Even if it fools you sometimes.
VI) Henry VII, Hardwick Hall, National Trust Collection:

https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/henry-vii-14571509-172314/search/keyword:henry-vii-117090/page/8
Often this painting is thought of as young Henry VII.
I’ve seen it years prior and  thought that yellow varnish played trick on portrait of Henry VII with light grey hair and created ilusion of blond hair and of much younger Henry VII-which then somebody copied into separate painting.
Problem is, now I’ve seen yellow varnish on light grey hair, and it doesn’t create such ilussion! My assumption was wrong!
So is it truly young Henry VII? Dressed and posed in same style as when he is grey? Not one wrinkle? It’s possible it is copy made to look him this young.
But what if the identity of the sitter is wrong? Remember, there is often great resemblence between family members and often their portraits are mislabelled, mistaken for their relative!
Tumblr media
Imo, this is father and son(V and VI), painted at same time. I can’t tell you if VI is young Harry or Arthur. I don’t know. Siblings can be hard to tell apart. Darkening of pigments might have turned Arthur’s hair in known portrait to brown and Henry’s red hair could in childhood be more to golden strawberry blond.
By the way the boy’s hand rest on dark ledge, yet again, and these last 3 paintings are aproximately same size(H 35.5-36.8 cm and W 25.5-27.5 cm, max 2 cm difference). With IV(which doesn’t have ledge and misses few fingertips) being the shortest.
The details in IV, V and IV suggests they are work of same painter. That painter could be Meynnart Wewyck. The differences between these paintings and those already proven to be by his workshop, could simply be that these belong into other stage than the two stages we already knew about.
Hence these could be the oldest paintings by Wewyck, thus oldest Tudor paintings. And if that is not worthy of investigation, idk what is.
I hope you’ve enjoyed it and no, part 5 won’t be arriving as quickly as part 4.

[ID: The painting, "Who Knoweth the Spirit of Man..." by Byram Shaw, depicting the legend of Gelert, a wolfhound who killed a wolf to protect his master's infant son, only for his owner to kill him, thinking the blood on his mouth was from killing the child. The painting shows the knight, with long blonde hair and white and red robes, holding his happy, golden-haired child in one arm, and his bloody sword in the other, kneeling before the slain wolfhound, who has his head on his master's knee, looking up at him, his muzzle and side flecked with blood. In the background can be seen the dead body of a wolf, with only two of its legs visible as it lies on its back, the rest of it, and the room, hidden behind torn and dissarayed tapestries and curtains that have been pulled down. The monitor operates on a 2nd-generation FHSS frequency in a closed-loop system, eliminating the need for internet connectivity and reducing the risk of potential hackers gaining access to the camera. This added layer of security provides me with peace of mind, knowing that only I can see and hear my baby. Durable Design and Portability The DXR-8 PRO features a sturdy and durable design, which has been a great asset in my day-to-day use. The monitor's kickstand provides stability, preventing it from tipping over on my nightstand. Additionally, the kickstand doubles as a handle, allowing for easy portability as I move from room to room. The labeling of the charging cables, indicating whether they are for the monitor or the camera, showcases the attention to detail in the design, simplifying the setup process. Long Battery Life and Additional Battery Options While the battery life of the monitor may be limited, requiring occasional charging or keeping it plugged in overnight, it is worth noting that the DXR-8 PRO offers additional battery options.
