i’m actually so mad that i didn’t pick up this collection of essays earlier when i had to write about the role of literature-in-english in formerly colonised societies. so so interesting and good. also highlighted the last portion because funnily enough just yesterday evening i was reading an essay about manto and legacy of urdu lit in india and aatish taseer makes such a similar point using the same example. except twenty years latter and about india

"No man dipping his satay in peanut sauce in Bangkok, or woman eating chicken paprikash in Budapest, or any number of families consuming potatoes across the breadth of Russia, stops for one moment to consider how relatively recently these seminal ingredients have been added to their national cuisines,
We apply the terms “invasive” and “native” to the vegetable kingdom. They are full of resonance for us, but every day, at our dining tables, we set aside our obsession with origins — what is ours, what has come from outside — nourishing ourselves on an endlessly fertile encounter with the other."-tracing Mexico’s Complicated Relationship With Rice, Aatish Taseer, New york times

ayan mukherji dated aatish taseer (as claimed by him) who was rejoicing over what happened to nupur sharma. i don't get why some people are spending so much money to watch brahmastra considering the kind of people involved with it.
it would be hypocritical if i come down to agree with you anon, considering how much i was looking forward to the movie. but alas, didn't get to see it because my family members kinda sorta hate these actors associated with the project.
i've laid down my take on this during lal singh chaddha also and i still stand by what i said. criticizing or even bashing a movie should only be done with respect to its plot, screenplay, acting, dialogues- you know the drill. if the movie IS as bad as certain reviewers are pointing it out to be, then by all means- roast it, boycott it- you have the right!
through my lenses; whatever history/ideology the people associated with the film ecosystem have, shouldn't affect the output project (unless of course it's too disturbing, portrays a negative stance on our national integrity etc.) and audience as well should judge the movie solely on the basis of what is shown in the scenes, not behind them.

" I’d learned the day before, the preconquest past, in areas such as language (Nahuatl), religion (an earth religion where the obsidian knife was routinely used in human sacrifice), dress (“the upper class,” writes Thomas in “Conquest,” wore robes of long quetzal feathers, and very elaborate cloaks of white duck feathers, embroidered skirts and necklaces with radiating pendants) and architecture (great stepped pyramids rising out of a lake encircled by volcanoes), has all but gone under in Mexico. But if there is one point of contact, one aperture through which the Mexico of today can reach out its fingers and touch the Aztec past, it is food. And that past, here at the Mercado de Abastos, through the prevalence of corn, cacao and chiles — and the absence of rice — could still feel very present."
