"Good Cop Parent vs. Bad Cop Parent"
11.7K Words; Rated: Teen and Up Audiences
_________
Here's a snippet from a conversation Buck overhears between Eddie and Chris.
_________
As soon as Buck opens the door, at the sound of his husband’s and son’s voices, he tilts his head to the side because he can hear them and it sounds like they’re having a heated discussion about something. Even though they’re not yelling, it’s the tone in the words being spoken that causes him to pause and listen.
“I’m not going to sign the permission slip yet because I’m still debating if we should let you go to San Francisco.”
He sighs, then replies, “But dad… Buck already signed it and we talked about it during the summer, so I don’t understand”.
“You’re right we did but… that was months ago and I’m not sure if you going that far away from home is a good idea.”
Buck’s sure they haven’t realized he’s at home yet, so he quietly sits his bag in their laundry/mudroom, then he closes the door, walks through the hallway that leads to the kitchen and that’s where he sees his husband in his uniform standing on one side of their round wooden kitchen table and Chris sitting on the other side with a frustrated look on his face.
He wasn’t expecting to walk in and find them in a heated discussion and since Eddie mentioned the permission slip, he’s positive they’re talking about the trip to San Francisco that’s scheduled for early next month.
“Dad?!” Chris shakes his head in disbelief then continues. “Did something happen to make you change your mind?”
“No. I’ve just been thinking about whether it’s a good idea for you to go on an overnight school trip that lasts for two nights.”
“Huh? Dad? I mean we’ve talked about this and I need to go. I’m one of the captains on the team and if I don’t go then…” He trails off because he’s getting upset and he doesn’t want to be disrespectful.
Buck’s standing there moving his head from side to side like a ping pong ball as he watches his husband and son go back and forth in their discussion. After hearing the exasperation and frustration in Chris’ voice, he figures now’s the time to intervene before one of his boys says something they’ll regret.
He walks over and stands on the side of the table and says, “Good evening family. What did I miss?”
What did Buck miss? 🙃
Also, why is Eddie reconsidering their joint decision to let Chris go on a school field trip to San Francisco? 👀

Both Being Bad Cop Parents

___________
Here’s a snippet of a conversation between Buck, Eddie and Chris while they're eating breakfast.
____________
Eddie says, “No Chris, you can’t go so let’s change the subject.”
Chris pushes his chair back, grabs his crutches, stands then leaves the table.  While he’s exiting the kitchen, he loudly says, “I can’t do anything in this house!”
Eddie looks at Buck and says, “Did he…?”  He trails off then he turns his head to face the direction Chris is walking in and says, “Christopher Michael Buckley-Diaz, come back in here now!”
Chris stops in his tracks and Buck and Liz stop moving.
A loud silence fills the kitchen and other than the sound of freshly frozen ice cubes dropping into the ice dispenser on the refrigerator, the only sounds that can be heard are the birds chirping while they splash and play in the water inside of the bird bath that’s in the backyard.
After a few seconds, Liz asks, “Chris gone?”
Buck uses his hand to move the curls that have fallen onto her forehead and replies, “No baby, your brother is still here… he just left the room but he’s coming back.”
When Chris reenters the kitchen and sits down at the table, Eddie looks at him and says, “Chris… you leaving the table during a discussion and saying you can’t do anything in this house is not how we do things in this family and I know you’re aware of that.  You will not disrespect us!  We talk things out and we allowed you the opportunity to tell us about the party.  You did and both of our answers were no.”
Chris huffs and snaps back, “NO!  You said no… but Buck didn’t.”
Eddie thinks they must have stepped into the Twilight Zone, an Alternate Universe or something because Chris has only been disrespectful once in his 17 years and that was when he was a pre-teen.  He’s not naïve and he fully understands Chris is growing up but him being older doesn’t give him the right to be disrespectful.
“You’re right, Buck didn’t verbally say no but we’re in agreement with each other so when I say no, he agrees with me.  Now please apologize.”
“I apologize.”  Chris responds as he looks at both of them then he asks, “May I be excused?”
Eddie’s eyes widen but Buck responds, “Yes and I’ll be in there in a few minutes to talk to you.  I’m just going to talk to dad for a few minutes.”
Chris nods, he stands and leaves the table again.

_________
Here's a snippet from one of Eddie's and Buck's conversations about parenting.
_________
Buck lowers his head as he thinks about everything that’s happened. A few seconds later he meets his husband’s eyes and asks, “Do you think we’re good parents? I—I mean are we better to our children than they were to us?”
Without hesitation Eddie replies, “Absolutely because we’re not like them now and we never will be.” He laces their fingers together and continues. “We’re good parents, we’re not perfect but we’re better than our parents were to us while we were growing up. Before we got married, we talked about how we didn’t want to raise our kids like they raised us and we try to be the best parents we can be. I know we play the roles of bad cop and good cop parents when different situations deem it necessary but we do that to set boundaries for our children while we continue to show them how much we love them. Doing that doesn’t make us bad parents… actually it makes us good parents because we make sure we teach our children how to be morally responsible and how to have a moral compass. We take care of them; we sacrifice everything for them and most importantly we love them.”
Buck nods as he allows Eddie’s words to settle around them. If he’s honest, he’s always wondered if he would be a good dad and once he became one the day they got married, he’s always hoped he was. He just knew he didn’t want to end up like his own parents mainly because he remembers how bad it hurt to feel neglected and abandoned. He knows he’s not perfect and he still has a lot to learn but he believes they're doing their best with both of their children.
Eddie rubs his free hand through his hair and says, “Also, we’re not like our parents because we’re available and everything we do… we do it for Chris and Liz. The hair care products business we started is for them. We’re going to retire early because we want to be there for every one of their milestones. When Chris graduates high school next year, we’re going to be there cheering for him on the front row when he gets his diploma. When he goes to MIT next year, we’ve already planned to be off work for two weeks so we can help him move in and get settled. After we get back, when Liz starts Pre-K, we’re going to be there with her too. And when Chris gets married, we’re going to be right there by his side as his best men…” He pauses then says, “Well if he lets us. And when Liz goes to her senior prom and when she gets married, we’re going to be there for her.”
Buck gently squeezes Eddie’s hand and says, “Thanks babe.”

This is part 2 in a new series titled "Good Cop vs. Bad Cop Parents". Part 1 is "Becoming the Bad Cop Parent" and it was posted on AO3 earlier this year.
___________
Here’s a snippet of Buck and Chris' conversation.
____________
“Uh… Chris, how was the arcade?”
“It was great.”  Chris responds as he keeps looking at his notebook.
Buck tries again by asking Chris a question that requires him to use more than two or three words to answer.
“What did you guys do while you were there?”
“Nothing much...  we played skee-ball and some of the driving games.”
He’s still waiting on Chris to look at him but since he hasn’t, Buck realizes he needs to be more direct. He wants to give Chris the opportunity to tell him what happened because he doesn’t want to assume anything and he wants Chris to understand he can always come talk to him.
He gently asks, “Chris, could you look at me please?”
Chris finally looks up and meets his eyes.
“Thank you.  Now… before I say what I’m about to say, I want you to know that I’m not accusing you of anything because in this family we talk first.  So, is there anything you’d like to talk about because… when you walked past me after Ms. Parker dropped you off, I—I thought I smelled cigarette smoke.”  He maintains eye contact with Chris and asks, “Was someone at the arcade smoking cigarettes?”

_________
Here's a snippet of Eddie discovering Buck's been injured at work.
_________
Eddie's almost finished and he’s in the process of putting the steaks into the freezer when he hears Chris scream, “DAD!”
The sound he hears in Chris’ voice causes him to immediately abandon what he’s doing and he runs towards the scream he heard while leaving the freezer door open.  His breath hitches in his throat as he continues to search every room for their two children.
Chris screams again, “DAD!  COME QUICK!”
Eddie’s eyes are frantically searching every room for them.  He feels like he’s running a marathon and even though he’s run longer distances in the past, he’s almost completely out of breath.  His lungs feel like they’re on fire as he tries to get to their son and daughter.  He checks the living room first but when he doesn’t see them, he heads down the hall towards the family room.  He’s sure it’s the only place Chris’ blood curdling screams could be coming from because it’s where the largest TV in the house is located and the kids prefer to spend time in that room instead of the living room because the sectional couch is in it.
Once he enters the room, both Chris and Liz are staring at the TV and he notices Liz is still holding a half-eaten chocolate chip cookie.  They’re both motionless and their eyes are glued to something they’re watching on the TV screen.  When he turns his head to face the direction they’re looking in, he sees the words “Breaking News” at the top of the screen and underneath them, there’s a Los Angeles ladder truck in flames.
His eyes move to the right so he can look at the captain’s seat and that’s when he sees it’s completely engulfed.  The truck is burning so badly only two of the firehouse’s identifying numbers can be read on it and they’re ‘18’.
He can’t tell if it belongs to the 18, 118, 218, 318, or 1118 firehouse because they’re all active stations located in Los Angeles County.
His phone starts ringing and it’s like everything starts happening in slow motion.  His head feels like ginger ale is rolling around in it and even though he can see Chris and Liz are ok, everything else in the room looks completely fuzzy.  He doesn’t have to look at the caller ID to know someone from the LAFD is calling and his suspicions are confirmed when he looks down and reads, “LAFD Headquarters” on the display of his cellphone.
It's the telephone number the department uses to contact spouses whenever there’s an emergency.
Everything after that happens fast.  It’s the Assistant Chief calling and he’s familiar with him because he just so happens to be his brother-in-law, Chimney Han.  He was promoted at the beginning of the year from Battalion Chief and now he works directly with Chief Alonzo who will be retiring in a few months and after he does, Chimney will be promoted and will become the new Fire Chief.
In this moment, flashbacks of the last time Buck was sitting in the captain’s seat of a burning firetruck flood to the front of his mind like raging waters in an ocean during high tide.  His voice becomes strangled as he prepares to answer the phone but he doesn’t have a chance to say anything before Chimney starts talking.
When he lifts it to his ear, he hears Chimney call, “Eddie?”
His eyes widen and he inhales as he meets his son’s eyes and motions for Chris to change the channel and keep an eye on Liz so he can take the call in another room.
He’s trying not to panic but he’s having a difficult time of it and once he steps into their bedroom, he closes the door and asks, “Where's my husband?”  He heaves a deep breath and continues.  “Chim… I—I need you to tell me the truth!  How—how bad is it?”
