Character Actress

Gretchen Hoyt Corbett (born August 13, 1945)  Actress and theater director. She is primarily known for her roles in television, particularly as attorney Beth Davenport on the NBC series The Rockford Files, but has also had a prolific career as a stage actress on Broadway as well as in regional theater.

Corbett moved to Los Angeles under contract to Universal Studios, as one of the last contract players. Her first role under contract was in the pilot episode of Kojak (1973). Under her Universal contract, Corbett guest-starred in numerous network series in 1974, including Columbo, Gunsmoke, and Banacek

For the majority of the 1980s, Corbett appeared in guest-starring roles on numerous television series, including Cheers (1983) and Magnum, P.I. (1981–1983), and starred in the short-lived Otherworld (1985). Since the 2000s, Corbett has served as the artistic director of the Portland-based Haven Project, a theater project serving underprivileged children. She returned to television with a recurring character on the IFC series Portlandia in 2013, and had a guest-starring role on the Hulu series Shrill in 2019. (Wikipedia)

Mas series vintage para la colección.Y hoy presento una que no era básicamente una serie semanal, sino una que alternaba con otras en el mismo día y horario.Algunas tuvieron más éxito que otras.En este caso la serie en cuestión es 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗞 (𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟮), con dos temporadas entre 1972 y 1974 y con apenas 17 episodios de una duración de unos 90 min c/u.

Esta serie tuvo buena critica de la prensa especializada aunque no tuvo el favoritismo del público.Esto último estaba vinculado a su protagonista 𝗚𝗘𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗣𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗗 (𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗔), que estaba transitando por un difícil divorcio, lo cual hizo que se retirara de la serie y esto ocasiono el final de la misma.

Toda la historia se desarrollaba en la ciudad de Boston y 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗸 era un investigador privado experto en robos y defraudaciones a compañías de seguros.Era una especie de play boy trabajando a medio tiempo y su mas fiel compañero de aventuras era su chofer.Tiene una buena vida dado que resuelve casos multimillonarios y no por ejemplo como muchos investigadores de la época como 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗻, 𝗟𝗼𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗼 que persiguen al asesino de turno, sino que trata con ladrones de guante blanco.

En los Estados Unidos en los años sesenta, se produjo una corriente migratoria muy similar a la que se produjo en los años ochenta.La única diferencia entre una y otra es que en la primera los que llegaban venían de países que estaban detrás de la cortina de hierro y los de la segunda básicamente de países centroamericanos como ser Nicaragua y El Salvador.Sin olvidarme de la década de los setenta en la cual llegó una corriente migratoria de países del sudeste asiático (Vietnam y Camboya mayoritariamente).

Nuestro investigador era procedente de Polonia y rápidamente se adaptó al estilo y vida de los estadounidenses.Esto fue importante en la época, ya que de esta manera se estaba diciendo que en los Estados Unidos podías conseguir lo que querías, pero sin abandonar tus raíces.

La presencia de este gran actor que provenía del cine y de muchas películas importantes, fue un factor diferencial (𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗼 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼).Sin embargo puedo decir que lo mejor de su carrera se dio en los años sesenta, pero su alcoholismo, hizo declinar su (hasta ese momento) muy buena carrera.Una carrera que refloto con esta serie que comento y en la década del ochenta con 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗔 𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗲́𝗻 𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗶́𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗼𝘀.

Volviendo al tema de la serie en sí, el otro protagonista era su chofer 𝗝𝗮𝘆 𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗿𝘆 (𝗥𝗔𝗟𝗣𝗛 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗭𝗔) y también su confidente y con quien compartía una parte de la ganancia que le quedaba por recuperar el dinero perdido.Este personaje era un tanto escéptico, irónico, y veces medio gracioso, pero eso si era fiel hasta la medula a 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗸.

En la serie había otro personaje fijo y era el de 𝗙𝗲́𝗹𝗶𝘅 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, interpretado por 𝗠𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗢𝗡, que era partícipe necesario ya que era el que le conseguía a 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗸 información privilegiada, para sus trabajos de investigación.Además era dueño de una librería muy vieja, pero con mucho acceso a información, lo que diríamos en otras series, un informante.

Hacia la segunda temporada apareció una protagonista femenina, una becaria con la cual 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗸 coquetea y enseña los gajes del oficio. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗿𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 era su personaje y la interprete era la actriz 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗗, con quien 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗱 había trabajado en la película 𝗟𝗔𝗦 𝗗𝗢𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗦 𝗗𝗘𝗟 𝗠𝗜𝗘𝗗𝗢 (𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟮).

Desde luego la serie deja una perlita que es que el personaje que era polaco o de origen polaco (sorprendió hasta los mismos polacos esto), no ayuda a conocer Polonia ni la idiosincrasia polaca.El show sirve como la gran mayoría de las de ese tiempo para describir una época, es decir su estilo de vida, sus vehículos, su moda y decoración.

Para ir terminando la serie no supera el paso del tiempo, pues sus argumentos eran viéndolo hoy (50 años después), muy flojos. Quizás lo mejor sean los refranes absurdos y de origen polaco, que solía pronunciar 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗸.Uno de los puntales de la serie era el enganche que tenia el actor con el sexo opuesto, lo que le proporcionaba cierta audiencia.A veces el personaje principal tenía el chiste fácil para con el sexo opuesto y de eso también se aprovechaban los libretistas, cosa que con el rodaje se empezó a atenuar y que en pleno siglo XXI, es considerado muy fuera de lugar.Considero la serie como regular y mi puntaje es de 5.5/10.

If there’s one thing George Peppard does well, it’s play a smug, arrogant tough-guy hero. This episode is one of the best examples of that.

Christine Belford, last seen in the pilot, returns to the series as a co-star. She’ll make 4 more appearances. She and Peppard have fantastic chemistry. The character of Kirland adds a lot to the series.

Great guest cast in this one: Candy Clark, Scott Brady, Don Stroud, Gary Lockwood, Linden Chiles. And they all get something fun to do. Clark is particularly adorable.

The mystery is really compelling. The investigation is full of interesting developments. The explanation at the end is very satisfying. What more could you want?

In the episode The Real Deal Jim and Blair talk about their favourite old TV shows they watched as kids. Reason for this is the aging actor Vince Deal, who comes to visit. He is played by the iconic Robert Vaughn.

Here the dialoge between Jim and Blair (taken from Becky's trascripts)

Blair: Oh, come on. Didn't you ever watch Braddock's Way when you were a kid?

Jim: Braddock's Way! I watched Banacek.

Blair: Banacek? With George Peppard? Come on!

Jim: He was smooth, he was intelligent...

Blair: He was an insurance investigator. That hardly qualifies as a detective show.

Jim: Then I'd take Mannix. Good with his fists, dry sense of humor.

Blair: Granted, granted. I'll give you that. But Starsky and Hutch, they had the car, right? Mannix, I don't even know what he drove.

Jim: Starsky and Hutch were cops, not P.I.s.

Blair: So?

Jim: Although I can see how Huggy Bear inspired your kit here... (plays with Blair's dark blue plaid suit jacket)

Blair: Hey, hey, back off!

Simon walks by.

Blair: Simon! Simon! Come on. What was your favorite '70s detective show?

Simon: You're kidding me, right?

Jim and Blair: Shaft.

Simon: "That cat shaft with a bad mother..."

Jim: "Watch your mouth!"

Simon: "Talking 'bout Shaft."

Blair: (laughing) You know who we're forgetting here is Baretta.

As a fan favorite on The Rockford Files, it's easy to imagine that some girls in the television audience decided to become an attorney, thanks to Gretchen Corbett's portrayal of the level-headed, no-nonsense Beth Davenport, Jim Rockford's sometimes girlfriend and always put-upon lawyer. Corbett was a frequent presence on 1970s and 1980s TV, appearing on Ironside, Banacek, Columbo, Gunsmoke, 

Hawaii Five-O, Cheers and Magnum, P.I., among others.

Stella Stevens (born Estelle Eggleston; October 1, 1938 – February 17, 2023)  Film and television actress, film producer, director, and writer.

Primarily a film actress Stevens appeared in numerous television series, miniseries, and movies, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1960, 1988), Bonanza (1960), The Love Boat (1977, 1983), Hart to Hart (1979), Newhart (1983), Murder, She Wrote (1985), Magnum, P.I. (1986), Highlander: The Series (1995), and Twenty Good Years (2006).

Stevens appeared in several top television series in the 1960s, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1960), General Electric Theater (1960, 1961), and Ben Casey (1964). One of her earliest television appearances was in a critically acclaimed 1960 episode of Bonanza, "Silent Thunder", playing a deaf-mute.

In the early 1970s, she began working regularly on television series, miniseries, and movies. She appeared in episodes of such popular series as Banacek (1973) and Police Story (1975), as well as the pilot films for Wonder Woman (1975), The Love Boat (1977), and Hart to Hart (1979). In 1979, she appeared along with her son Andrew Stevens in The Oregon Trail (1977) episode "Hannah's Girl".

In the 1980s, she continued to work regularly on series such as Newhart (1983), The Love Boat (1983), Fantasy Island (1983), Highway to Heaven (1984), Night Court (1984), Murder, She Wrote (1985), Magnum, P.I. (1986), and Father Dowling Mysteries (1987). Stevens appears in 34 episodes of the primetime soap opera Flamingo Road (1981–82), as Lute-Mae Sanders, the former madam of a brothel.

From 1989 to 1990, she had a role on Santa Barbara as Phyllis Blake. Her string of appearances on popular television series continued into the 1990s with The Commish (1993), Burke's Law (1994), Highlander: The Series (1995), Silk Stalkings (1996), and General Hospital (1996, 1999). She also appeared in the critically acclaimed miniseries In Cold Blood (1996).
