Athena Ryan, from Sonoma Academy, and Lorelei Barrett of Sherman Oaks Buckley, (both transgender) opted not to participate in the scheduled girl’s 1,600-meter run at Buchanan High in Clovis, Calif.” And last week I posted a story about the women boycotting because men were allowed to participate in the women’s division. The only way both sides can be happy is to have the mens division be open and the women division be just for women. That way men taking hormones and women taking testosterone can still compete…..they just aren’t going to be happy with the results.
Two transgender female high school athletes were no-shows for their race at the California State preliminary Track and Field Championship on Friday — a week after they clinched a spot in the elite race.
Athena Ryan, from Sonoma Academy, and Lorelei Barrett of Sherman Oaks Buckley, opted not to participate in the scheduled girl’s 1,600-meter run at Buchanan High in Clovis, Calif., according to The Los Angeles Times.
“The CIF is disappointed for two of our student-athletes and their families because due to the actions of others, they found it necessary to withdraw from the State Track and Field Championships out of concern for the student’s well being,” the California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for high school sports in California, wrote in a statement to the outlet.
The CIF expressed that the organization “strongly denounces discriminatory or harassing behaviors” the student-athletes have been subjected to and are disappointed the runners have chosen not to compete.
Last week, Ryan and Barrett qualified to compete for a chance of winning states after placing in the top three of the girls’ 1,600-meter races at their respective sectional meets.
Ryan, a junior, finished in second place as protests formed, calling her participation in the competition unfair to the other girls.
She also came under fire after a runner who placed fourth was seen on video waving to the crowd before appearing to give a thumbs-down — a gesture taken entirely out of context, the school told The Post.
Barrett, who won third at the Southern Section Masters event last Saturday, was also subjected to similar pressure from the crowd, with a spectator allegedly yelling to “Trip her” repeatedly while she ran her 1,600-meter race, which can be heard on a video.
The Post reached out to Sonoma Academy and Sherman Oaks Buckley.
The outlet asked five local coaches of runners who were in line to compete in Friday’s 1,600-meter heat were asked they felt about transgender females being allegeable.
Three coaches said they would support any athlete who shows up to compete, regardless of how they identify.
The two other coaches shared that they believed transgender girls should run in their own separate races, the outlet reported.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Adults have created this problem,” said Oaks Christian coach Wesley Smith. “Adults need to fix this problem.”
The California Interscholastic Federation enacted its “Gender Identity Participation” rules in 2013, stating, “All students should have the opportunity to participate in CIF athletics and/or activities in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity.”
“All of our athletes, all the eligible athletes, are afforded the opportunity to compete with the gender they feel most comfortable with,” Brian Seymour, the CIF’s associate executive director, told The Los Angeles Times.
College swimming star Riley Gaines slammed the two runners for not competing saying,: “Did they realize they clearly possess an unfair advantage?”
Tumblr media
The University of Kentucky swimmer has gained notoriety for vocalizing her displeasure with transgender females competing in female biological sports since facing Penn swimmer Lia Thomas — a transgender female.
Gaines tied with Thomas for fifth place in the 200-meter freestyle NCAA championships in March and has loudly criticized Thomas since then.
“Women are brave people, but it shouldn’t take bravery to demand equal treatment. And if our leaders cannot deliver fairness to sports and athletics, then we need different leaders. Our next generation of girls deserves to see themselves as champions – not “oppressors” – and we all deserve a clear voice in this debate,” Gaines wrote in an op-ed for The Post.

A SO CAL SPORTS CHRONICLES EDITORIAL: Why I Don't Have Any Basketball Posts (as of yet)
Looks like it rained on this outdoor basketball court… THE REASONS FOR NOT HAVING BASKETBALL POSTS ON THIS BLOG AS OF THIS MOMENT ARE FAIRLY SIMPLE ONES, THAT ARE TWOFOLD: I feel that November is too early to focus on basketball, both the pro and the college kind, right now as I’ve always felt that November – and especially October in the NBA’s case – is too early to start the basketball…

Mock ‘slave auction’ prompts high school to forfeit football season
A California high school will forfeit the rest of its varsity football season after some players were captured on video appearing to act out a “slave auction” of their Black teammates.
The Yuba City Unified School District first forfeited last Friday’s game after administrators became aware of the video Thursday, Superintendent Doreen Osumi said in a statement. The district later said it would forfeit the rest of the season after banning the involved team members from playing.
The mock auction at River Valley High School appeared organized, Osumi said, suggesting that the students planned the situation without considering that it was “disgraceful.”
“Reenacting a slave sale as a prank tells us that we have a great deal of work to do with our students so they can distinguish between intent and impact,” Osumi said. “They may have thought this skit was funny, but it is not; it is unacceptable and requires us to look honestly and deeply at issues of systemic racism.”
District administrators did not answer questions about how many students were involved, what specifically the video showed and where the recording was shared. The incident, which took place roughly 38 miles north of Sacramento, was previously reported by Sacramento-based television station KCRA and other local news outlets.
Mock slave auctions in schools — some sanctioned by officials and others not — have come under increased scrutiny in recent years as the United States struggles to respond to its history of racism and fractures over how much its past sins still shape it. Schools have been particularly heated settings for those arguments as politicians in Republican-led states seek to ban lessons that suggest that racism is systemic in the United States.
For the Yuba City district, the loss of the players means the team does not have enough members to complete the season. Sophomores and juniors on the varsity team, which was 0-5 before its first forfeit last week, can choose to play on the junior varsity team.
Some students may be further disciplined, Osumi said, and the district is working to develop programs about racism to help students learn from the situation. Administrators are also developing training for the football team “to act with character and dignity at all times,” she said.
“When students find humor in something that is so deeply offensive,” Osumi said, “it tells me that we have an opportunity to help them expand their mind-set to be more aware, thoughtful and considerate of others.”
The California Interscholastic Federation, which oversees high school sports in California, said it supports administrators’ decision “to promptly address the misconduct of their students.”
“Discrimination in any form or any acts that are disrespectful or demeaning are unacceptable and are not consistent with the principles of the CIF,” the group said in a statement.
Like the incident in Yuba City, some mock slave auctions have been instigated by students. In April 2021, a video shared on Snapchat showed students in Traverse City, Mich., “trading” their Black classmates. The district’s response, which included fast-tracking a resolution to better teach students how to live in a diverse country, roiled the community.
Other times, teachers have guided their students to act out an auction as a history lesson — often prompting outrage. That’s what happened in Maplewood, N.J., in 2017, when a substitute teacher orchestrated and filmed a mock auction as a lesson about Colonial history. Two years later, a teacher in Bronxville, N.Y., allegedly let White students “bid on” Black students. And in March, a North Carolina superintendent apologized after White middle-schoolers pretended to “sell” their Black classmates.

California Makes Flag Football a Girls' High School Sport
California approved a plan Friday to make flag football a girls’ high school sport amid soaring popularity of the game and a push to get more female athletes on the field.
The move by the California Interscholastic Federation — the statewide body that governs high school athletics — makes flag football an official sport for girls in the nation’s most populous state for the upcoming 2023-24 year. The plan was approved unanimously by the organization’s federated council in Long Beach, said Rebecca Brutlag, an agency spokesperson.
Paula Hart Rodas, president-elect of the CIF Southern Section’s council, said the goal is to get more girls involved in high school sports and tap into a widespread love of football by many who are loath to play tackle. Southern California schools spanning from Long Beach to Corona are hoping to start teams in the fall and the approval allows districts to add the sport to their budgets, Hart Rodas said.
“You can love the game of football and not love getting tackled but still want to participate,” Hart Rodas said. "Flag right now is aimed directly at getting more girls involved in athletics by adding a different sport that we know girls across the country are interested in, but not willing to play tackle for a variety of reasons.”
The move adds California to a growing list of states that have included girls' flag football in high school athletic programs, such as Alabama and Nevada. New York state's public high school athletic association took a similar step this week and expects to host the first state championship for girls flag football in the spring of 2024.
The vote in California comes amid a surge in interest in flag football among younger players in recreational leagues and burgeoning support from the NFL and teams such as the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, which have been running a pilot high school league for girls in Southern California.
Scores of schools signed up to participate in the pilot and those selected to do so — and the eager young players who played in it — have widely been seen as pioneers in the sport.
Paul Schmidt said being part of a start-up has been exciting for his 14-year-old daughter, who had never played flag football before she tried out for the team at Redondo Union High School, one of the schools participating in the league. Making the sport official should make it easier to secure field time, he said, and gives a boost to a tight-knit team of girls that has bonded around starting something new.
“She loves it, loves it. It’s exciting to be in a new sport,” he said.
Rising interest in flag football — in which no one gets tackled and a play ends when an opposing player pulls a flag from a belt around the ball-carrier's waist — comes amid concern about the risk of concussions and other injuries from tackle football.
In the decade leading up to 2018-19, the number of girls playing flag football in U.S. high schools doubled to 11,000, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Without the CIF's approval, California high schools could organize flag football clubs. But coaches said allowing official interscholastic competition will likely drive more schools to start teams and develop a pipeline of players.
Troy Vincent Sr., the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, wrote in the Sacramento Bee that times have changed since he played professional football, which back then was “broadly seen as a man’s game." He said high school players might be able to play into college and beyond as universities have also ramped up the sport.
Vincent is also pushing to get flag football added to 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
“This is no longer just a backyard sport for girls’ pickup games during family holiday gatherings,” he said. *Reposted article from NBC 7 by Amy Taxin on February 3, 2023

The girls team with the boy was going to compete against girls who could not interact with him for religious reasons without any prior communication.
By Anna Slatz January 8, 2024
A girls basketball team from a Muslim high school in California may have canceled a game after the school’s board was made aware that the opposing team had a trans-identified male player.
On Thursday, January 4, Averroes High School was set to compete against San Francisco Waldorf in a girls varsity basketball event, but the event was abruptly canceled. While the school has not provided comment on the reason why the sudden forfeiture took place, the decision was reportedly the result of the institution being made aware that a male player was participating on the Waldorf girls’ team.
Averroes is an Islamic school in the Bay Area, and sources close to the matter speculate that the hesitancy to compete against Waldorf was due to religious objections regarding the Muslim girls risking physical contact with the male player.
While the name of the male student will not be released at the request of sources, Reduxx has reviewed past game footage featuring the boy on the Waldorf team. He is seen towering above his female counterparts, boasting an obvious height and limb length advantage. According to team rosters, the male student has also retained his “masculine” name.
Tumblr media
SF Waldorf playing a match against another California high school in November.
Speaking to Reduxx, Julie Lane of Women Are Real, an independent, California-based women’s advocacy group, revealed that information on the Waldorf player was first brought to their attention by a concerned father in November of 2023. His daughter had played a game against Waldorf, and had been left “traumatized” by the experience. Following the tip, Lane scouted out a Waldorf event to see for herself.
“The boy had an obvious advantage,” she says. “[The girls] didn’t necessarily run their offense through him, probably because they didn’t want to be targeted. But he got most rebounds and was able to jump much higher than the girls.”
She continued by noting that the male player “was not particularly skilled,” but that he had a longer range of arm reach and could jump significantly higher.
“They were at a complete disadvantage,” Lane says. “I caught one scramble for the ball with another player and my heart stopped. She was more than a foot shorter than him and could have been seriously injured.”
According to the statistics tracked by MaxPreps, the Waldorf Wolverines Girls Varsity team has won all but one game it has participated in over the past year.
Determined to raise awareness of the Waldorf player, the team at Women Are Real looked into the school’s upcoming games. Learning about their scheduled appearance against Averroes, a religious school focused on Muslim youth, the group then contacted the school’s board to alert them to the presence of a male on the opposing team.
“I was hopeful and thought there was no way this board would let their female athletes participate with a boy,” Lane said, noting that she never received a response from Averroes.
On January 4, Lane and some members from the Women Are Real team arranged to attend the match between the Waldorf and Averroes teams. But upon arriving, Lane was unable to locate the girls’ event. Confused, Lane approached some parents for answers, and was directed to speak to a female Waldorf student who had been sitting on the bleachers watching the boys’ game.
Tumblr media
But Averroes has avoided providing a concrete, official answer about their motivation for abruptly canceling the match, and did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Jean Berns, another representative with Women Are Real, believes the confusion and silence surrounding the cancelation suggests Waldorf’s male player was the cause.
“As the school hasn’t made an official statement we can’t say for sure why the game was canceled. However, none of the multiple reasons we have heard from various sources make sense. We heard from the school director that there were not enough athletes to field a team, yet they played a game two days later with more than enough players. We heard from others that the coach was ill, yet he was able to coach the boys team the same evening of the cancelation. All this mystery and secrecy leads me to believe that the true reason for the cancelation most likely involves the male athlete,” she said, adding that she was “relieved” when she learned the game had been called off.
“On one hand, I feel strongly that no girl’s safety should ever be compromised and that no girl should be competing against a boy unawares. On the other hand, I’m saddened that the result is girls quietly self-selecting out of sports,” she continued.
“Will girls’ sport die a silent death here in California? Seeing that the boys game went on made me angry. Nothing has happened to them. What message are we sending these young girls?”
Speaking with Reduxx, Marshi Smith of the Independent Council on Women’s Sports speculates that the confusion surrounding Averroes’ forfeiture may be the result of concerns about potential penalization from the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
“The CIF falsely claims that boys who say their ‘gender identity’ is ‘female’ have legal entitlements to girls’ opportunities and access to girls’ teams, dorms, locker rooms, scholarships, titles and records,” she explains. “Families and schools like Averroes are wrongly told they’ll be in violation of federal law if they don’t force their daughters to compete against or with males. Tragically, feeling powerless, teams will quietly forfeit more and more.”
But Smith says CIF’s threats are “false and unethical,” and calls on schools and families to push back against gender ideology-based policies.
“Families must boldly oppose this injustice against women and girls now. There are millions of Americans ready to champion them.”
UPDATE: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that SF Waldorf had won “every single” game it had competed in over the past year. This has been updated to reflect a single loss.

River Valley Excessive College soccer staff acted out slave public sale
YUBA CITY, Calif. (KTXL) — Members of a Yuba Metropolis highschool acted out a slave public sale, the superintendent of the Yuba Metropolis Unified College District mentioned. Superintendent Doreen Osumi mentioned the district acquired a video Thursday of the River Valley Excessive College soccer staff members appearing out a slave motion. The superintendent mentioned mentioned it was a “reprehensible act” and that the soccer staff has forfeited this week’s recreation. Yesterday, District and website administration acquired a duplicate of a recording of River Valley Excessive College soccer staff members appearing out a reprehensible act of a slave public sale.  The recording clearly demonstrates that this case was orchestrated and arranged, which underscores my concern that college students hung out considering this horrible act with out the slightest regard that this motion is hateful and hurtful.  They might argue that it was a joke, they usually supposed no hurt, however the truth is that this isn’t solely dangerous, it’s disgraceful.  At the moment, we’re investigating the state of affairs to find out which gamers have been concerned and to supply our help and honest regard for the humiliation and anger that this have to be inflicting.  This week’s recreation towards Woodcreek has been forfeited, and we will likely be working with our directors and coaches to handle the coaching that our athletic staff requires to be able to act with character and dignity always.
