Plettenberg & Grabouw
In September, we went for a week to Plettenberg Bay. We had a relaxed time, going to the beach several times. The food highlight was definitely Barrington’s, a local brewery with tasty meals. Our usual visit to Île de Païn in Knysna was also on the schedule. On the way back, we stopped in Grabouw for a few days as well at Houw Hoek Inn, the place where we got married almost 10 years ago. We…

Those Who Wander (Repost)
Theme - Equals: I want to stand beside you, not behind you. Rating - G Warnings - None :D Notes - Reader’s gender is not defined as this story is designed to be applied to anyone.
-
The first thing someone usually said about you was that you knew how to handle yourself. Which was entirely true as you were the type of person who had wanted to not only to be able to protect yourself but also those too weak to fight for themselves. Due to this normally when you found yourself in some sort of trouble or had sought out the trouble yourself, you where left to deal with it on your own. You had, by now, become used to this and now found yourself in a strange and even interesting situation.
You had been riding your horse through the plains of Hyrule with no real destination in mind when a group of Moblins had rushed out of a small grove of trees straight at you. A single Moblin was annoying a group of them could get tedious and even dangerous under the right circumstances. They caused your horse to rear up in surprise and you jumped out of the saddle to deal with them before they could surround you. You were up to your elbows in Moblins when you heard the sound of a galloping horse.
Since you figured whoever it was would just take advantage of you distracting the Moblins to ride pass you ignored it. That is until the horse ran past you and the blond haired young man riding it took a swipe at one of the Moblins as he rode past. You could not help but stare in surprise as he reigned his horse and jumped out of the saddle fully intending to help you. You continued to stare at him until a Moblin tried to detach your head from your shoulders with the rusty blade it was carrying.
With a yell, you refocused on the ensuing battle and blocked the Moblins attack with your short sword while you dispatched it with your other sword. With the help of the stranger, the two of you were able to make quick work of the Moblins a task that would have taken three times as long on your own. As you cleaned your weapons, something that was like second nature to you now, you glanced around to make sure they were no more. Then you turned your focus on your new ally a smile on your face. “Thank you for the help!”
The young man seemed a bit more surprised then you had been by his sudden appearance probably because he had not realized that you could actually hold your own. Most people found out and about on the plains where traveling merchants, farmers, ranchers, the rare sheep herder, or people just trying to get from point A to B. While some of them could at least defend themselves, very few of them could stand against a group of Moblins. Still, as far as you were concerned, his help was more than welcome as he not only saved you time but helped keep you from being injured. Like you, he was wearing light armor though he seemed to favor a sword and shield as his weapons.
He recovered from his surprise quickly enough and returned your smile with one of his own that seemed so natural for him. “I am glad that I was able to help,” he told you and you nodded. Then he glanced at your horse, who had not wandered far once it realized the Moblins were ignoring it, which was as sturdy as the one he rode. Yet you noticed that while yours was burdened with various travel gear his was not. He then turned his attention back to you and asked, “Where are you headed, if you do not mind me asking?” He was not trying to be rude you noticed he was just genuinely curious.
You walked over to your horse to retrieve its reigns. “I do not mind you asking. Honestly, I do not know where I am going yet,” you answered him truthfully. You had nothing to hide. When you turned to him you noticed that his smile had been replaced with a troubled expression. “Why?” you asked him as you pet your horse on its nose. “Is something wrong?”
“Ah,” he started as he seemed to become a bit nervous as if he was unsure of what to say, “It's just that things have become… Dangerous.” To you it seemed dangerous was not quite the word he wanted to say yet he must not have had a better explanation for what he meant.
You blinked and had to wonder just what he had wanted to say and what he meant by dangerous. Hyrule had never been a safe country to travel through. One could be attacked by Moblins at any time and traveling by night could be downright deadly. Yet, now that you thought about it, you realized that the number of Moblins recently had increased. It was also rare for them to have rushed you like they had when you had not stepped foot into their territory. Also, the number of people you had seen traveling had decreased lately, but until now you really had not been paying all that much attention to it. What else could you have missed?
“Is there someplace in particular that I should perhaps avoid?” you asked him as you watched him retrieve his horse’s reigns as she had begun to wander off to graze. He leads her back over to you while he clearly thought over your question carefully. It seemed to you he was becoming a bit more guarded and if you had to guess it was not a natural thing for him to do. He seemed more of the type to be open and forthcoming. As you waited for his answer you continued to pet your horse’s nose.
“It would be best to avoid Castle Town,” he finally said after a few moments of silence as he looks downward. You could not help it when your eyes widened a bit. Castle Town was obviously the very heart of Hyrule with its vasts markets and various services it offered. It was commonplace for most travelers to stop at the city to take advantage of what it had to offer. Not one for crowds or narrow streets you actually preferred the much quieter and more open Kakariko Village where the villagers were friendlier to travelers than most in the city. You would have no qualms following his advice.
“Alright then,” you told him and he lifted his head to look at you. “I will make sure to avoid Castle Town if I happen to find myself in the area,” you said much to his immense relief. For someone, you had just met he seemed to be overly concerned for your safety. It was clear that he had a big heart if nothing else.
“Good,” he said as his smile made a reappearance. He then glanced around the field. “I am sorry to leave so soon but I have to go now,” he stated as he climbed up into the mare’s saddle.
“Wait!” you called before he could urge the mare onward and he looked at you. “What is your name?”
“Link and yours?”
“I’m _____.”
“It was nice to meet you, _____,” he told you a bright smile on his face. Then he urged his mare into a full gallop continuing in the direction he must have been going before he had come to your aid. You watched him go until you could no longer see him than continued on your way as well. Maybe if you were lucky you would run into him again sometime on your travels.

A/N - I really enjoy reading Reader x Character stories practically ones that feature Link as he is the type of character that can be written so many different ways depending on how the writer pictures him. However, most of the stories I have read always have him playing the Hero while the Reader is protected by him. I wanted a story where the Reader could stand by Link’s side and not be a burden for him (If anyone knows a story like this feel free to let me know!). So I wrote one XP. There will probably be more to this later, but for now, this is it.

Tiny Starbucks coming to Dilworth Park
A second Starbucks is coming to Dilworth Park this spring.
“From the time we opened Dilworth in 2014, we watched how people used it, we looked at things we wanted to add, and every single year since it's been opened we’ve been adding things,” said Paul Levy, executive director of Center City District, the nonprofit entity that manages the popular public space along the west side of City Hall.
The new coffee shop will be smaller than the Dilworth Park Cafe-branded Starbucks that operates on the City Hall plaza’s northern end, and won’t include seating. Like the larger cafe, it will be run by Brûlée Catering, a local company.
The tiny caffeine dispensary will be branded as a Starbucks. Probably not coincidentally, it will sit directly across the street from La Colombe, providing a visible alternative to the homegrown rival, which has recently gone national and begun selling its drinks on convenience store shelves alongside beverages made by the Seattle giant.  On any given day, a stream of caffeinated customers cross from La Colombe’s South Penn Square location into Dilworth.
The new shop will sit 446 feet from  Brûlée's other Starbucks — roughly the length of two city blocks.
“All of us are lazy,” said Levy.  “Walking two blocks to a cafe for a drink is not human nature these days.”
Freshly planted trees and shrubberies will surround the new shop. A “green screen” of trestles running up the sides, and a green roof, will add to the sylvan effect, planners said on Tuesday at a meeting of the Philadelphia Historical Commission’s Architectural Committee.
When Dilworth Park debuted, critics described its minimal design as barren and pined for more vegetation.
Since then, trees and shrubbery have grown up in the plaza and the Center City District added an ice rink, a winter garden, and holiday markets to give the area more life, even in the gray months. Some 87 planters are tended year-round, many of them concentrated on the southern corner where the plaza meets at street level with the snarl of traffic moving around Penn Square.
The new cafe will be designed to blend in with that greenery — and potentially, provide another shield against traffic.
“It's not that we are looking to hide the building but we are trying to make it part of the green screen, the green landscaping on the southern end,” Levy said.
The coffee shop got a recommendation from the Architectural Committee on Tuesday and will go before the full Historical Commission in January. Assuming it gets the final approval then, construction will start in February and is expected to wrap by April.
But while the committee was overwhelmingly supportive of the commercial addition to the city-owned plaza, they expressed concerns about the building's back exterior. That wall will be the thing that greets pedestrians walking by on the sidewalk. It is adorned with a green trestle, but critics said it lacked any way of engaging with the thousands of people who will bustle past every day.
“It's kind of abrupt, you’re basically putting a blank facade on a main city sidewalk,” said John H. Cluver, a partner with Voith & Mactavish Architects and a member of the committee. “It is treating itself as a wall to the public and not a public amenity.”
The new cafe will join another relatively recent addition to South Penn Square — Parliament Coffee, owned by Starr Catering, which opened in 2017.

First Step Forward
Theme - Introduction
A boy gulped as he tightened his hold on the letter of introduction his father had given him not even a candle mark ago. His brown wide eyes focused on the intimidating building he currently stood in front of. The building itself was several stories tall made out of dark gray stones with several glass windows that overlooked the courtyard in front of the building. If he wanted to be technical he actually stood outside the wrought iron fence that separated the street from the building. Not that it mattered much at the moment as the large gates were almost never closed from what he had been told.
This building, which was almost located at the heart of the city, was the top magic school in the city of Annaliya. The city itself was considered the most knowledgeable when it came to magic and had originally been founded by Mages who had wished to study and practice their magic in peace in a time when people, mainly humans, with magic where looked down upon. Over the hundreds of years since it had been established it had grown into one of the largest cities currently known that garnered much respect.
The boy, whose name was Thomas, was here in an attempt to gain entrance to this school. From what he knew of the entrance process, while it was strict, it was fair and fairly simple as the school had to weed out those who simply did not have enough talent to reach the higher level classes the school offered. They did not wish to put the effort into a student who could not graduate. Of course, they have made mistakes in the past and those students had ended up being sent to other schools in the city that were more suited for those with less talent. So even if the boy was somehow denied he would still have options within the city.
However, what frightened Thomas the most, was that he would not qualify for this school, known as Firelight due to what Thomas had been told was some type of inside joke. More than anything Thomas wanted to become a Magic Enforcer like his father and to have any chance of that happening he needed the magical energies Firelight students where required to have. If Firelight turned him down simply because he did not have the magical capacity they required he would never make it as a Magic Enforcer. One had to be strong in magic in order to over power those that abused magic after all and ones magic pools developed the most as a child.
Of course, power wasn’t all that was required to be a Magic Enforcer. One had to be good at casting spells as well. Just because one had the power did not mean they had the capacity to wield it. It would be a few years before Thomas would learn whether he could fully wield his power so for the moment he focused on the problem at hand. Whether or not he actually had the power within him.
With a deep breath, Thomas relaxed his hold on the letter so as not to rip it and began his way across the courtyard along the main path. On either side of it where two prism-shaped crystals a lot taller than Thomas, which wasn’t saying much since he was a bit on the short side. The two crystals floated in the air a bit off the ground suspended only by the spells that had been cast upon them. Floating around them slowly and in no real pattern where smaller prism crystals about the size of Thomas’s head.
The closer Thomas go to the crystals the more the hair on the back of his arms began to stand up. It was because of this he realized great amounts of magic where contained within those crystals. This did not surprise him too greatly because when his parents and he had passed Firelight the other night on their way to the inn they were staying at the crystals had lit up the entire courtyard and parts of the street itself. In the daytime, the light was less intense so Thomas could actually look at them.
The boy paused between the crystals to gaze up at them feeling his short hair under his cap standing up as well. The crystals thrummed in a beat that almost matched his own heartbeat with a rainbow of colors at the heart of each crystal. It was a bit disorienting being near the two of them and Thomas quickly made his way towards the double doors made out of some type of dark wood. Like the gates both doors where wide opened as Firelight had nothing to hide nor fear. He stopped just short of entering the doorway spotting a slight shimmer going across it and he soon realized why.
Thomas’s father had told him that several cities and even buildings themselves had begun to use barriers made out of Light magic that would stop Demons from easily being able to enter the place or city. It made him a bit curious as to why the school would have one since the boy knew that, much to his dislike, Dark magic was taught in this school and not just in theory or how to protect oneself from it. Dark magic was always somehow associated with Demons no matter what the person using it would claim. Firelight got away with teaching it because they claimed it was for the purpose of studying and learning which was what Annaliya had been founded on after all. No student was allowed to use it and ones who did have been expelled in the past. The barrier most likely proved that to be true as anyone who had practiced Dark magic would be stopped by the barrier just as any Demon would because they would be tainted by the magic.
With a shrug, Thomas easily stepped through the doorway and glanced around him. Thomas now stood in a rather large room, going up at least two stories with a railed walkway on the second floor, with several people of varying ages, races, and species walking around it headed to their various destinations. He carefully made his way towards the large desk in the center of the room where three people of various ages, a woman and two men only one of which appeared fully human, to wait in the line that had formed there for his turn.
“C’mon kid your turn,” one of the males called to him. Thomas looked at him then nodded as he made his way over to the older male. This man’s age was actually hard to tell and had in part to do with what he was. His very dark colored skin was beautifully accented by the thin silver marks all over his skin that glowed faintly. His ears were slightly pointed and his eyes matched the marks on his skin though they did not glow as well. His long black hair was in several small braids kept in a messy bun at the back of his head. The clothes he wore were meant to draw peoples attention to the marks on his skin since the long sleeves of the shirt he wore were, in fact, see through. The marks where all Thomas really needed to see to know he was half-human, half-De, or half-elemental in the common tongue. Thomas had heard of them before but this was the first time he had seen one in person. The marks most likely meant he specialized in metal magic if Thomas’s books had any truth to them. “Here to take the entrance test?” he asked Thomas.
“Yes, sir,” Thomas answered him and the man nodded. He leaned back slightly in the chair he was sitting in as he pulled open a drawer and took out a crystal that would easily fit in Thomas' hand. He then held it out to the boy.
“This will show you the way to the examiner’s room. You are a bit late or very early depending on how you look at it compared to most so you shouldn’t have to wait too long,” the man informed him as Thomas carefully took the crystal. They may be magic, but dropping them broke them just as easy as any regular crystal. As for what the man meant most people came to apply at the schools during the summer when more roads were open since Annaliya was near a mountainous region but Thomas had arrived late winter since it was one of the few times his father was free to take the trip. “You know how the crystal works?” Thomas nodded as he had watched his father use such crystals before. “Good then off you go kid and good luck.”
“Thank you,” Thomas told him a grin on his face then he took a few steps away from the desk. Once he was out of the way he took hold of his magic, a dark blue in color, and willed a tiny bit of it into the crystal. Almost instantly it jumped out of his hand taking on the same color of his magic and began floating away from him. Thomas quickly followed after it staying close to it as there where other crystals floating around. The crystal lead him deeper into Firelight until it had stopped in front of a door. Thomas took hold of the crystal cutting off his magic from it then knocked on the door. When there was no response of any kind he carefully opened it and walked inside.
The room was empty except for a small desk and chair that Thomas had a feeling was meant for the test giver. He set the crystal down on top of it then walked over to the far wall and put his back against it so he could slide down into a sitting position to wait for whoever was going to give him the test. It was not a long wait for soon after he had sat down an older man, whose hair had already turned white, walked into the room. He walked over to the desk and sat down pulling a few papers out of one of the drawers. Once he was settled he motioned Thomas over.
“State your name, please,” the man told him as he dipped his quill into ink when Thomas had walked over.
“Its Thomas, sir, Thomas Merrick,” he answered and the man nodded writing his name down.
“Age?” he asked him.
“I’m eight, sir.”
“Have you ever taken magic classes before Thomas?” the man asked as he looked up at Thomas. The boy nodded and handed the letter of introduction to him. The man took it and after unrolling it carefully read over it. “I see you have your basics down. Good, I’ll make a note of that in your file and include the letter as well. It also says here your father is a Magic Enforcer?”
“Yes, he is sir. I want to become one like him one day,” Thomas answered him and the man nodded as he wrote several things down on his papers.
“Just for record purposes can you please state your bloodline?” the man asked him as he looked up at Thomas. It wasn’t unusual to ask such things. As blood of some of the more magical races got diluted they appeared more and more human so Thomas was not at all surprised by such a question. Different races had different illnesses that could crop up so he understood the purpose of the question. For example, he knew the man that had given him the crystal would probably have regular yearly checks with healers as mental illnesses were known to crop up with half-elementals. As for Thomas himself, who was mixed blood, diseases that would attack his magic producing ability where known.
“I am mostly human through my grandmother on my father's side of the family was from the People of the Forest,” Thomas answered and the man looked up at him again. Thomas wasn’t surprised by this, most humans who had People of the Forest blood in them were tall and here he was shorter then full-blooded human boys his age. Of course, the People of the Forest had another name they where referred to but his Grandmother had told him they preferred to be called by this name over the others when speaking to someone in the common tongue so that was how Thomas addressed that part of his bloodline.
“Remove your cap please,” the man told him and Thomas was not at all surprised by this and blamed his shortness for the request. Thomas reached up and removed his cap revealing much like the man he had spoken to earlier his ears were slightly pointed as well but not as much as that mans had been. His blood was more diluted from his pointed ear relatives then him. Once the man had nodded Thomas replaced his cap. The man wrote a few more things on his papers then stood up.
“Alright, then Thomas the test we perform is quite simple. Do you know about mental barriers?” he asked him and Thomas nodded. Anyone who had enough magic to make something move was taught how to create barriers within their own mind. This prevented people from being able to use magic on someone without their knowledge unless they could somehow circumvent the barrier. Healing magic, benign healing magic that is, was somehow exempt from this though it was a mystery how.
Mental barriers where a form of protection and something that grew in power more as one got older and became more familiar with themselves as a person. Those who had troubles knowing just who or what they where could be known to have weak ones. “I will need you to lower them or a least let my magic through. That way I will be able to determine the strength and potential you have.”
“Alright, sir,” Thomas told him and closed his eyes as he was not yet at a point to do this with them open. When his father had taught him how to create the mental barriers he had told Thomas to imagine something between his mind and the outside world. For Thomas, it was an endless chasm, something he picked up when he was really little, and when he felt the older mans magic he pictured a bridge forming over the chasm to let it in. Then all he had to do was wait. When he felt the magic leave he opened his eyes to see the old man smiling at him.
“Welcome to Firelight Thomas.”
