Achtung: das ist kein gewöhnlicher Artdump, sondern ein illustrierter Ausflug in meine zeichnerische Vergangenheit - zumindest jenen Teil davon, der dokumentiert ist. Mir war danach, darüber zu erzählen, und es ist ziemlich lang geworden, das Weiterlesen besteht also auf eigene Gefahr ;)

Begonnen hat eigentlich alles im Schuljahr 1999-2000, dem Jahr, in dem ich die Volksschule hinter mir ließ und in die große, weite Welt des “collège” (so die Bezeichnung der Franzosen für die AHS-Unterstufe) entlassen wurde. Auf einmal war alles irgendwie anders, angefangen damit, dass man für jede Unterrichtsstunde den Saal wechseln musste, und die Lehrer strenger waren, und selber fühlte man sich auf einmal auch ganz komisch, konnte aber nicht erklären, weshalb, weil man das Konzept der Pubertät noch nicht richtig begriffen hatte..

Das Schuljahr hatte noch kaum richtig begonnen, als auch schon Pokémon „passierte“. Besser lässt es sich nicht formulieren … gerade eben noch war es diffus ab und an irgendwo wahrgenommen worden, hier ein Bild in einer Zeitschrift, dort ein Hinweis in einer Fernsehwerbung, wenig mehr als Hintergrundrauschen dem man keine richtige Beachtung schenkt, und dann, ganz plötzlich, war es DA, und dann war es überall, und schließlich war es Teil jeden Gedankens, den ich zu fassen imstande war. Über Pokémon kam ich auch zu meinen damals drei besten Freundinnen, mit denen ich mich über kaum etwas anderes unterhielt. Ich erinnere mich bis heute an die Mittwoch-Nachmittage (die einzigen Schultage, an denen wir bereits zu Mittag aus dem Unterricht entlassen wurden), die wir damit verbrachten, bei Jill – die praktischerweise gleich neben der Schule wohnte – Pokémon zu schauen, respektive den ganzen Zeichentrickblock von RTL2; und ich weiß noch, als wäre es erst gestern gewesen, wie wir gemeinsam den allerersten Pokémon-Film angesehen haben.

Natürlich hatten wir im Unterricht nichts Besseres zu tun, als uns mit unseren Lieblingspokemon zu zeichnen. Um ein Haar bin ich damals der Schmach entgangen, das Schuljahr wiederholen zu müssen.

Im Jahr darauf waren wir auf nur noch drei beste Freundinnen heruntergeschrumpft, was uns allerdings nur darin bestärkte, die Köpfe noch tiefer zusammenzustecken. Sailor Moon war irgendwie wieder ein Thema geworden, und Rayman auch, und Tomb Raider, und das beflügelte uns dazu, eine Geschichte zu erfinden, in der wir ein Super Badass Geheimagentinnentrio waren. Unser Codename war (nachdem wir lange darüber geknobelt hatten) „MSJ“, nach den ersten Buchstaben unserer Vornamen, der Zeichenstil war angelehnt an Rayman (allerdings nur insofern, als dass wir nur Köpfe, Torsi, Hände und Füße zeichneten und den Rest wegließen). Überhaupt hielten wir zusammen wie Pech und Schwefel und lebten vorwiegend in unserer eigenen Welt, in der profane Dinge wie etwa unsere schulischen Leistungen keinen Platz fanden.

Entsprechend mies waren unsere Noten auch in diesem Jahr.

Entsprechend logisch ist es retrospektiv betrachtet, dass wir im folgenden Schuljahr jeweils in unterschiedliche Klassen gesteckt wurden.

Über die Sommerferien 2001 hatte ich wohl endgültig begriffen, dass Zeichentrickserien wie „Pokémon“ japanischen Ursprungs waren, und dass man japanischen Zeichentrick „Anime“ nannte. Dass japanische Comics „Manga“ hießen. Dass Manga und Anime das Allercoolste überhaupt war und dass ich lernen wollte, so zu zeichnen. Ich erinnere mich noch, wie ich in der Buchhandlung ums Eck die ersten drei Bände „Manga zeichnen: leicht gemacht“ bestellte, und wie ich sie abholte, den ersten Band durchblätterte und mir mit einem Mal war, als hätte sich mir eine ganz neue Welt offenbart – vielleicht, weil genau das der Fall war. Diese Bücher waren wie meine Bibel damals, alles, was darin geschrieben stand oder aufgezeichnet war, habe ich gierig inhaliert und nachzueifern versucht. Imzugedessen entstand auch die „Urform“ jenes Geschöpfs, um das es in diesem Post EIGENTLICH geht:

Neofeli, den ersten dokumentierten Fan Character (oder, um‘s ehrlicher auszudrücken: „self insert“), den ich erschaffen habe.

In ihrer Erstiteration hieß sie Zenya, oder Zarya, oder wie auch immer man die Schmiererei, die ich damals für „erwachsene Handschrift“ gehalten habe, dechiffrieren mag. Wunderbar, dass ich ausgerechnet damals herausfinden musste, wie ich möglichst unleserlich schreiben kann … facepalm

Was mir durch den Kopf ging als ich sie zeichnete oder was ihre Hintergrundgeschichte war, weiß nur mein 13-jähriges Ich (das 29-jährige Ich hat die Erinnerung daran leider irgendwann mal abgegeben), und ebenso, ob das hier lediglich die einzige verbliebene Zeichnung von ihr ist und ich den Rest verschlampt habe, oder ich sie überhaupt nur ein einziges Mal gezeichnet habe. Jedenfalls: das ist der Prototyp, und gleichzeitig die erste Zeichnung, die in meine erste (von sehr vielen) Manga-Mappen gewandert ist.

Hihi, der viel zu kurze Fischschwanz! Haha, der Dreizack! Hähä, die Schuppen! Es ist furchtbar, wirklich, aber ich finde es großartig.

Hashtag: „ein Gesicht, das nur eine Mutter lieben kann“.

Fast forward zum Beginn des Schuljahres 2001-2002. Ich war, wie gesagt, „auf mich allein gestellt“, zumindest vorerst, weil irgendwie, ich kann echt nicht sagen wie es eigentlich dazu kam, fanden eine meiner mir entrissenen Freundinnen - Jill - und ich wieder zueinander. Und ich, über sie, zu Dragon Ball Z:

Manga und Anime waren mittlerweile in der Mitte der (jugendlichen) Gesellschaft angekommen, und RTL2s Nachmittagsprogramm wurde dominiert von Digimon („wäh, ein ekliger Pokémonklon“, wie die 13-jährige Stef gesagt hätte), Monster Rancher („wäh, noch so ein Pokémonklon“, hätte Stef gequietscht), und eben Dragon Ball Z („Öha, das ist kein Pokémonklon“, hätte sie gemurmelt und sich nachdenklich über‘s Kinn gestrichen). Wenn man ein aufmüpfiger Teen war, der seinen Eltern nicht gehorchte, konnte man außerdem nachts die Glotze andrehen und auf MTV „The Vision of Escaflowne“, „Golden Boy“ und ich glaube auch „Cowboy Bebop“ schauen, aber das sei nur so nebenbei erwähnt.

Dragon Ball Z war DAS BESTE ÜBERHAUPT und ich hatte regelrechte Entzugserscheinungen, wenn ich mir nicht meine tägliche Episode zuführen konnte. Ich wünschte, ich würde übertreiben. Amüsanterweise erinnere ich mich vage daran, dass Jahre zuvor bereits Dragon Ball (ohne Z) auf RTL2 gelaufen war und mich völlig kalt gelassen hatte. Vielleicht, weil Son Goku da noch nicht erwachsen war und ich außerdem noch nicht unter dem Bann meiner Hormone gestanden hatte ;)

Es blieb aber nicht nur beim Anime: von unserem mageren Taschengeld kauften wir uns – beim Hutterer auf der Rotenturmstraße – den einen oder anderen Dragon Ball Manga (der erste den wir gelesen haben war glaub ich Band 24?), lernten, wie man Manga „richtig“ von hinten nach vorne liest, und tauschten die einzelnen Bände untereinander aus. Und wenn wir nicht den Anime schauten oder in den Manga versunken waren, zeichneten wir unsere Self-Inserts oder schrieben peinliche Fanfiction.

Tatsächlicherweise waren wir zu jenem Zeitpunkt sogar ein Dreiergespann und ich “die hinzugekommene Dritte aus der Parallelklasse”. Das Gleiche galt auch für meinen Self-insert, den ich irgendwie in die bereits existierende „Geschichte“ hineinquetschen musste. Irgendwie kam ich wohl wieder zu meinem Prototypen zurück, und dann beschlossen Jill und ich, dass unsere Charaktere Schwestern sein sollten, und leiteten ein großes „Redesign“ ein. Die Geschichte lautete wohl so, dass mein Charakter zunächst eine von „den Bösen“ war, gekommen, um den Planeten zu unterjochen – aber in Echt war sie „natürlich“ eine von den Guten, nur hirngewaschen, aber dank ihrer Schwester und deren bester Freundin konnte sie sich schließlich von ihrer HIrnwäsche befreien und rettete mit ihren neuen Freunden die Welt. Sowas, oder sowas Ähnliches, jedenfalls genau die Art bescheuerter und durchschaubarer Geschichten, die man mit Dreizehn eben so ersinnt.

Und dann war da die Sache mit dem Namen.

Jills Charakter hieß „Neori“, und da ihr Charakter zuerst da war, und unsere Charaktere wie gesagt Schwestern waren (wenn auch verschollene. Ich weiß leider nicht mehr ob sie nicht sogar womöglich Zwillingsschwestern waren…), gab es zwei „unausgesprochene Regeln“, nichts, worauf man pochte oder das man überhaupt jemals über die Lippen gebracht hatte, aber so eine Art selbstverständlicher Regeln, an die man sich einfach hielt - oder die ich mir auferlegt hatte, weil ich womöglich bereits damals eine pedantische Neurotikerin war, beides liegt im Rahmen des Möglichen.

Erstens: wir mussten ähnlich klingende Namen haben.

Zweitens: weil ich die Hinzugekommene war, musste ich einen angepassten Namen für meinen Charakter aussuchen.

Wie man anhand der Protagonistin™ unschwer erkennen kann, sind Namen eher nicht so mein Ding ;) Eine Weile saß ich also nasebohrend herum und überlegte erfolglos vor mich hin. Eine Weile später war ich mit meiner Familie im Zoo, stand vor dem Gehege mit den Tigern und las auf der Plakette vor dem Gehege oder weiß der Teufel von welchem Ort auch immer deren wissenschaftlichen Namen ab: „neofelis tigris“ - was seltsam ist, weil Tiger laut google eigentlich zur Gattung „panthera“, nicht „neofelis“ gehören. Google Nachforschungen haben allerdings ergeben, dass ich nicht die Einzige bin, die darauf schwört, dass es “neofelis tigris” heißt, und nachdem ich meine Deckblätter von anno dazumal mit einem wunderbaren ClipArt-Tiger (lol) versehen habe, kann ich zumindest ausschließen, dass ich mich falsch erinnere. Will sagen: keine Ahnung, woher die Missinformation stammt, aber ich bin da ganz ohne Schuld :)

Es ist aber auch völlig egal, wichtig ist nur meine damalige Erkenntnis, dass „Neofelis“ und „Neori“ schon mal drei Buchstaben miteinander gemein haben, also praktisch miteinander ident waren. Insofern: Bingo! Das „s“ am Ende hab ich gestrichen und Ta-daa: Neofeli war offiziell geboren.

Abseits von der eher schwachen und praktisch vergessenen Hintergrundgeschichte die ich bereits vorhin so weit erzählt habe wie ich mich erinnere weiß ich nur noch so viel:

Neori und Neofeli waren beide ursprünglich vom Planeten Neptun, also „Neptunierinnen“. Neptunier, das hatten wir beschlossen, waren wohl exzellente Krieger – evtl vergleichbar mit Klingonen, wobei der Vergleich damals explizit nicht aufgestellt wurde, der Gedanke kam mir erst im Moment des Schreibens -, die sowohl im Wasser als auch zu Land leben konnten.

Wir hatten irgendwelche superbesonderen Mary Sue Kräfte, und die Edelsteine an unserem Arm- und Schwanzschmuck sowie das BlingBling auf der Stirn (Sailor Moon lässt grüßen) hatten was damit zu tun, ich hab nur keine Ahnung mehr, was.

Neori war soweit ich mich erinnere die Femininere von uns beiden, immer gut gelaunt, fast ein bisschen naiv, und kokett , wohingegen Neofeli tendenziell eher no-nonsense war und in ihrer Grundeinstellung ernst bis übellaunig, Hashtag: „erstschießendannfragen“.

Ich, ähm, ich meine natürlich Neofeli (;)) war in Piccolo verliebt, und entweder Neori oder der dritte Character (von dem ich nicht mehr weiß wie sie hieß, bloß, dass sie wohl der „freche Tomboy“ des Trios war) in Trunks, und die jeweils andere eventuell in Son Gohan? Auf jeden Fall war jeder in jemanden verliebt, weil wir waren Dreizehn und da ist das nun mal so!

Und ja, es ist nur logisch, dass ich ausgerechnet den grünen, semi-unsterblichen Weirdo-Alien “daten” wollte. Meine Vorliebe für … äh … unkonventionelle männliche Figuren ist, wie man sieht, alles andere als neu :D

Damit hat sich die Geschichte dann eigentlich auch schon erledigt. Eine Weile lang zeichneten wir also fröhlich unsere Self-Inserts. Dann kamen neue Anime und Manga des Weges (Banzai!, das monatliche Magazin von Carlsen Comics zB, war ein Quell nicht enden wollender Inspiration), also zeichneten wir die, und so weiter, und so weiter. Ab uns an gab‘s auch Neuiterationen von alten Charakteren (siehe den „draw me like one of your french girls“-Verschnitt von 2002), aber rückblickend hatten Neori und Neofeli in DBZ-Land eigentlich keine besonders lange Lebensdauer.

Sie sind aber, und das ist das eigentlich Wichtige, “die ersten ihrer Art”. Die ersten Fan Charaktere. Die ersten Geschöpfe, die man wenigstens so weit externalisiert dass man ihnen einen eigenen Namen gibt, denen man eine Vergangenheit schenkt, und Wünsche, und Ängste, und Weltansichten; die man in ein Abenteuer entlässt, die man kämpfen und leiden und verlieren lässt, aber auch gewinnen und lieben und lernen. Kurzum: die ersten, denen man Leben einhaucht. Und DAS ist es, was dieses blaue Alien mit way too much edge und dem geschmacklosesten Fummel überhaupt so bedeutsam für mich macht.

Der Themenaufgriff geht nebenbei bemerkt nicht auf meine Kappe, sondern ist, wenn man so will, by-proxy entstanden:

Ich habe unlängst Jills „Online-Präsenz“ (was für ein merkwürdig klingender Begriff) gefunden - ich hab sie leider mit dem Schulabschluss aus den Augen verloren (was nicht ganz stimmt: wir haben uns eine Weile lang wieder so semi-regelmäßig getroffen, aber das hat sich dann auch wieder verlaufen. Zuletzt face-to-face gesehen hab ich sie glaub ich Anfang 2014 ...). Jedenfalls sind wir auf Facebook befreundet, und wenn ich ab und an auf Facebook bin (was selten der Fall ist) stolpere ich über ein Posting von ihr, und einmal war’s, wie der Zufall so wollte, ein Link zu besagter Onlinepräsenz, wo sie ihre Zeichnungen etc postet. Seitdem schau ich dort immer mal wieder vorbei, freu mich, überlege dann ewig ob ich mich mal bei ihr melde, trau mich dann aber nie.

Jedenfalls hat sie vor ein paar Tagen im Zuge einer „Draw it again“-Challenge (wo man eine Zeichnung aus der Vergangenheit nimmt und neu zeichnet, um zu sehen, inwieweit man sich verbessert hat) eben Neori und Neofeli ausgekramt und redesignt, inklusive jenem Teil der Hintergrundgeschichte, an die sie sich noch erinnern kann, und nachzulesen hier.

Die nostalgischen Gefühle haben mich beim Lesen fast umgebracht, aber eben nur fast, losgelassen jedenfalls hat es mich nicht, im Gegenteil hab ich sogar meine alten Zeichenordner ausgepackt (das hab ich sicher seit über fünf Jahren nicht mehr getan!), durchgeblättert, und mit Erschrecken festgestellt, dass ich bei vielen Zeichnungen noch weiß, wann und wo sie entstanden sind. Das ist alles schon so lange her, und fühlt sich trotzdem so an, als läge es nicht länger als eine Woche zurück. Komisches Gefühl.

Am Ende war mir danach, ein Echo auszusenden, meinerseits ein Denkmal zu setzen für unsere blauen Amazonen, und es ist außerdem ewig her, seit ich zuletzt einen Charakter aus Uraltzeiten gezeichnet habe.

Schwieriger als alles andere war die Kleidung. Man würde annehmen, dass die potthäßlichen Fummel, in die ich Neofeli früher eingekleidet habe, leicht zu übertrumpfen wären, aber das Problem ist, dass sie eigentlich nie ein richtiges Outfit hatte, oder vielmehr keine erkennbare „klare Linie“. Nachdem sie eine Kriegerin sein soll, hab ich versucht, ihr was aufzupinseln, das man als „Uniform“ lesen würde, aber trotzdem etwas von der ehemaligen Freizügigkeit in sich trägt (aber ohne Cameltoe! Meine Güte, diese Cameltoe!!! Ich krieg wirklich jedes Mal Lachanfälle, wenn ich sie sehe). Diesen komischen Stofffetzen vorm Schritt (im Bild ganz oben rechts) hab ich auch beizubehalten versucht, weil der so schön semi-asiatisch daherkommt, dafür sind die Armreifen jetzt am Ende nicht mehr spitz, weil spitz zulaufendes Metall an den Handgelenken vermutlich die dämlichste Idee ist, die man haben kann (oida das muss weh tun wenn du dir das reinrammst versehentlich …).

Und ein „Familienbild“ musste es natürlich auch geben ;)

Last but not least noch eine Zeichnung, die mir beim Durchblättern ins Auge gesprungen ist, und die ich neu zeichnen wollte. Damals hab ich wahrscheinlich eine Stunde dran gesessen … und die Neuversion hat keine zehn Minuten gebraucht, haha. Außerdem: Neofelis alter Fetzen in nicht ganz so abartig schirch, dafür inklusive des Gürtels, der keinerlei wie auch immer gearteten Nutzen erfüllt :]

"Best Anime 100" Results Revealed for NHK's "Nippon Anime 100"

The results have been released for the "Best Anime 100" online poll, part of NHK's "Nippon Anime 100" project, which celebrates a century of the art of Japanese animation. The rankings were determined through popular vote via a poll that ran online from January 08 - March 31, 2017, and featured some 10,000 entries spanning the whole history of anime.

Meet The Staff: Aya

Aya (short for “Ayase”) is one of the staff writers for The Other Side of Tomorrow. She has a history of writing that extends all the way back into her high school career and opened her first website on Yahoo!’s now-defunct GeoCities service, alongside her first LiveJournal account (seriously, who didn’t try any of this stuff if they were around back then?) in 2004, which--of course--are long gone. Her writing and other activity has made the rounds in various small, grass-roots efforts, including a handful of old, now-defunct projects such as Gaming Unleashed and The Tails Realm. She has also maintained a number of personal blogs and projects over the years (almost all of which are now gone); her current blog, “Ayase Leilani’s Blog,” remains active. Alongside Cammie, she is now beginning her next endeavour: The Other Side of Tomorrow.

WHY DOES SHE WRITE: In Grade Eight, I could barely string together a sentence. I had an English teacher who constantly pushed me to write more and more and more for his class. I adored this teacher, who had served in the American Military during World War II and had amazing stories to tell; I would spend much of my free time talking with him. At the end of my Grade Eight year, I turned in my final project and found out that I had barely improved at all with my writing all year. I broke down in sobs and told him I’d never be able to write at this rate. He calmly handed me a box of tissues and waited for me to calm down. And then he said the words I would remember the rest of my life: “Never stop writing. Because one day you will be able to write very well and then you will be able to tell the world your story.” This has stuck with me my entire life and is now why I am able to write the way that I do.

Novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa, 1905.

Life Story of a Woman who gets abducted a child as an act of revenge, and sold to a brothel, where she moves on to become a famous courtesan, due to her outstanding intellect, personality and taste.

Time of the Gypsies

Film by Emir Kusturica, 1988.

Le Dernier Chant des Malaterre

Graphic Novel by Francois Bourgeon.

The Pillow Boy of the Lady Onogoro

Novel by Alice Fell.

Quote from Goodreads:

“This “exquisite, exuberant, X-rated” novel (Mirabella), set in feudal Japan, tells the story of a concubine who hires a stable boy to whisper erotic stories from behind a screen while she entertains her master, a samurai general.”

Even if the basic premise of this book doesn’t really work, I still love it so much that I had to include it here.

Definitely in the soulfood department.

Dangerous Liaisons

Les Liaisons dangereuses is a French epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, first published in four volumes by Durand Neveu from March 23, 1782.

It is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction as a weapon to socially control and exploit others, all the while enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. It has been claimed to depict the decadence of the French aristocracy shortly before the French Revolution, thereby exposing the perversions of the so-called Ancien Régime. However, it has also been described as an amoral story.

As an epistolary novel, the book is composed entirely of letters written by the various characters to each other. In particular, the letters between Valmont and the Marquise drive the plot, with those of their victims and other characters serving as contrasting figures to give the story its depth.

The Wire

TV series, 2002 - 2008, on black street gangs in Baltimore, cross cut with some police procedural of the cops pursuing them.

May be about to reach its shelf life for being too famous to need introduction.

Les Valseuses

Going Places is a 1974 French erotic comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Bertrand Blier, and based on his own novel. Its original title is Les Valseuses, which translates into English as "the waltzers"[citation needed], a vulgar French slang term for "the testicles".[2] It stars Miou-Miou, Gérard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere.

It is widely considered one of the most controversial movies in French cinema history due to its vulgarity, depiction of sexual acts, nudity, and moral ambiguity; however, Blier's later acclaim for the rest of his filmography made it a cult film for modern critics.

Jean-Claude and Pierrot are young men who travel around France, committing petty crimes and running from the law. After they get in trouble with a hairdresser in Valence for stealing his car, they grab his pistol and kidnap his assistant Marie-Ange, an apathetic girl. When they are bored with unorgasmic Marie-Ange, they decide to find a passionate woman and meet Jeanne Pirolle, a woman in her forties who is just released from prison and had spent ten years in a cell. After a threesome, Jeanne commits suicide and the men return to Marie-Ange. They find Jeanne's son Jacques who had been incarcerated as well. Then, the four consider founding a crime family but at their first crime, an attempted robbery, Jacques commits a revenge killing and the others flee. While on the run, they meet a family having a picnic near Col d'Izoard and the delinquent teenage daughter Jacqueline wants to join them. They take Jacqueline and on learning that she is still a virgin, they decide to deflower her. After dropping Jacqueline, the three ride away aimlessly.

Breaking Bad

Der Seewolf

One of the classic 4 part adventure series, that would traditionally be broadcast in Germany around Christmas time. First broadcast in 1971, and then literally for decades after that.

Based on a number of different Jack London novels and short stories, that originally had no connection with each other.

Story of a young man from a well off family, who gets shiprecked, and then taken on board by a whaler ship, ruled by a ruthless, self made captain, who refuses to get him to land, and kind of treats him at his whim, sometimes tormenting him, sometimes using him to have conversations with.

Spirited Away

Too famous to need introduction for the next 10 years or so.

Lolita

Too famous to need introduction for the next 100 years or so, but, just in case:

Bad Company

German language children’s tv series, animated in Japan, first broadcast in 1976, and then contiuously broadcast for many years after, due to its huge popularity.

Based on the original Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, while introducing considerable changes.

For some reason or other, I only ever watched this when I was already in my 20s. Still loved it.

Riget

TV series by Lars von Trier.

Kind of his version of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”, if you will.

Set in a hospital, and combining elements of atmospheric eerie / spooky story, comedy, and soap opera.

The Kingdom (Danish title: Riget) is an eight-episode Danish television mini-series, created by Lars von Trier in 1994, and co-directed by Lars von Trier and Morten Arnfred.

The series is set in the neurosurgical ward of Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet, the city and country's main hospital, nicknamed "Riget". "Riget" means "the realm" or "the kingdom", and leads one to think of "dødsriget", the realm of the dead. The show follows a number of characters, both staff and patients, as they encounter bizarre phenomena, both human and supernatural. The show is notable for its wry humor, its muted sepia colour scheme, and the appearance of a chorus of dishwashers with Down Syndrome who discuss in intimate detail the strange occurrences in the hospital.

Cowboy Bebop

Probably too famous to need introduction for the next 10 years or so; but just in case:

Atmospheric film about those long summer days. The one example that I can think of, where I find the portrait of family life --- well actually more mother and her sister, with the father only visiting once --- enjoyable to watch.

Sort of a “The perfect bourgois childhood” soulfood kind film. (With a fair bit of erotic slapstic thrown in, but oh well.)

5 volume graphic novel series by Conrad and Yann

Les Innommables ("The Unnameables") is a Franco-Belgian comic series written by Yann le Pennetier and drawn by Didier Conrad. It began publication in serialized form in 1980 in Spirou magazine and was eventually published in album form by Dargaud.[1]

The series recounts the adventures of three U.S. Army deserters – Mac, Tony and Tim – in 1949, as they trek across Asia and search for Alix, who is Mac's lover and a Chinese communist spy. Les Innommables is characterized by its black humor as well as frequent displays of nudity and violence – which eventually ended the series' run in Spirou.

The teenage rebel Johnny Mad Dog leads the small group of younger boys commanded by the older General Never Die, who feeds them cocaine.[1] The film follows the group's march towards the capital Monrovia, and follows them in a gritty realistic manner as they move through a series of towns and villages, where they terrify and often execute the population. The soldiers are depicted as almost feral, committing acts of pillage and rape, with scant regard for even their own lives. I left out most of the light stuff that I love to watch, and tried to only include stuff that kind of works as inspiration for what I would write about myself.

I enjoy rewatching scenes from The Wire, Rome, The Soparnos and Game of Thrones on youtube, typically many many times over. In the very unlikely case I should ever take part of creating a tv series, it would definitely have to be one that produces scenes that people get addicted to rewatching.

So … bin ich nun auch endlich damit fertig geworden. Da hat man eine ganze Woche um halb 3 Feierabend und kommt zu nichts, weil man einem Termin nach dem anderen hinterher jagen muss und sich dann auch noch irgendwie danach scheiße fühlt. Jetzt gibt es endlich auch meine 5 BESTEN am DONNERSTAG und nicht zu vergessen die honourable mentions.

La semana pasada , la cadena de televisión japonesa NHK, posteó los resultados de su encuesta, los 100 Mejores Anime.

La encuesta recolectó votos de Enero 8 a Marzo 31 para celebrar el aniversario número 100 del anime. Los votantes podrían escoger de aproximadamente 10, 000 anime y elegir 3 anime al día. Con un total de 600, 000 participaciones, estos son los resultados ( y vaya que son diferentes a lo que votaríamos en este continente, IDOLS y MOE ganaron ) .

The show started with a bang as the Hollywood-based band Alice Underground covered Cowboy Bebop's iconic opening "Tank!" Our hosts Anthony Carboni and Erika Ishii took to the stage and gave a funny and moving monolog about the power of fandom and how it's shaped the anime industry.
