R.I.M. Job - Film Review: BlackBerry ★★★★
Tumblr media
Have you noticed the glut of films about innovators? Those real life dramas have met with varying degrees of success in recent years with such titles as Air, The Social Network, Tetris, The Big Short, and The Founder. We seem fascinated by the process when that spark of genius  ignites or when hubris takes over. Enter BlackBerry, the distinctly Canadian entry in this list of cautionary true stories, this time about a generation-defining invention told in a very smart, highly engaging way.
Think Silicon Valley meets The Office with harsher overhead lighting and you’ll get the picture. It’s 1996 in sleepy Waterloo, Ontario, where young Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) heads up a small software company called Research In Motion, abbreviated R.I.M., which deliciously never merits a single comment nor should it for the humor of that to pay dividends for the film’s entire running time. Mike, a quintessential tech nerd, has a terribly incompetent yet loyal right hand man Doug (Matt Johnson, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Miller based on the novel Losing The Signal), and together they are running their company into the ground due to their terrible business sense. Lucky for them, they have invented the world’s first smartphone and just need someone who can sell it.
Enter Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton), the meanest corporate raider you will ever encounter and just the man for the R.I.M. job, if only Mike can come up with a prototype in time. Little do they know that Jim was fired from his last gig, hasn’t met a phone he hasn’t smashed, and figuratively is the poster child for toxic masculinity years before that word was ever coined. It’s a business deal and a contract forged in hell, but as a piece of movie entertainment, it’s made in heaven.
Jim, all suits, gold watches, and expensive cars, strong-arms himself into a Co-C.E.O. position, bulldozes his way into Mike’s world of overgrown children who have grown accustomed to movie nights, toys and other childish ways and brings in people who can make their business work. Chief among them is Purdy, a gloriously intimidating Michael Ironside, as their new C.O.O., who can emasculate anyone before ever uttering a single word. Jim, however, doesn’t understand the tech of it all, leaving that up to Mike, but his failing is that he’s also not the most scrupulous of businessmen either, making less than legal decisions along the way as their BlackBerry starts to dominate the market.
It’s fun to revisit that time in the early 2000s when the world marveled at this phone with it’s clickety-clackety keyboard and small screen and thought that nothing could surpass it. It’s fun to watch Cary Elwes as a rival Palm Pilot executive attempt a hostile takeover, especially when we know the fates of both technologies. Remember those unwieldy stylos? You also never forget that the iPhone is just over the horizon waiting to tear this whole thing down.
Though it all, we get a trio of fantastic performances.  Baruchel finds a touching vulnerability in Mike, a genius with a great idea, a man obsessed with the details who lacks the confidence to communicate his vision. He has a heart and you feel his struggle when it comes time to make cutthroat decisions such as leaving his friend out of an important pitch meeting. It’s a stunning, humane performance.  Johnson, who with his cinematographer, Jared Saab, keep things loose and handheld, often adopting an observational stance. His performance, however, is of the comic powerhouse variety one typically associates with Seth Rogen. He’s the stooge who clearly will never outgrow his headband but will always, always, always have his pal’s best interests in mind. We all need a Doug in our lives, but sometimes the Mikes of the world just can’t or don’t see it.
Finally, Howerton, best known for It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, is the real revelation here. Almost unrecognizable with his shaved head and thousand yard stare, he gives a galvanizing performance as the kind of guy you you want in your corner as long as that corner is actually nowhere near your actual corner. He’s the scariest movie monster since Freddie Krueger yet doesn’t draw a drop of blood. He’s the type of character who’s scary because he simply lingers on in your imagination long after the memory of its title handheld device fades away. He, like BlackBerry itself, is, if I may invent a new word, funnerving.

Limousine Beach s/t LP (Tee Pee)
RECOMMENDED
Summer is near/here and what pushed it in was a high pressure system generated by this fucking record. Limousine Beach is a five-piece from Pittsburgh fronted by this guy Dave Wheeler, who cut his teeth in a meatier earlier project called Carousel, but this one is so well-considered and stylized that you can just skip right to the new. 100% whistle jams, 5 o’clock brewski for youski. Poppier hard rock that keeps big-uppin’ both the pop and the metallic aspects, to where this hits the sweet spots of Van Halen, Urge Overkill, Thin Lizzy, The Darkness, .38 Special and Enuff Z’Nuff all at once. They boast three lead guitarists, but it’s no Molly Hatchet job Romero – this is the band you showed up for that is also showing up for you. My Pittsburgh blue collar roots are forever soaked in this sort of Corrigan Drive muscle car/jacked up truck sort of low ceiling, workin’ for the weekend mentality, and when your worldview is steeped into this mild form of rebellion it’s easy to fetishize this sort of thing.
At the same time, Limousine Beach are like the best band to do this since The Darkness rolled around, but have a deeper bench of Electric Lunch style references, to where you can easily hear them breaking into an Allman Brothers reverie for like 10 seconds before hitting the Purdie Shuffle and a little “Fool in the Rain” lick, and it becomes PAINFULLY clear that to do this sort of thing right you need both the technical skill these dudes undoubtedly possess, and the back bench of musical knowledge, and how to transmit that through endless practice until it becomes part of you. New Orleans musicians seem to need some sort of catalogue of songs they can break into on their instrument at a moment’s notice, and I think it’s the same with these guys – they are deep and wise enough to get the feel of familiarity while still making it go on their own. I’m pulling for these guys and you should be too; this could melt a phone speaker playing Sheer Mag at ten paces. (https://limousinebeach.bandcamp.com/) (Doug Mosurock)

Y otra vez Ravens enfrentan a Bengals
Chargers y Jaguars: invitados inesperados
Conferencia Americana
Dolphins vs Bills
Ravens vs Bengals
Chargers vs Jaguars
Chiefs (Descansa)
Conferencia Nacional
Cowboys vs Buccanners
Giants vs Vikings
49ers vs Seattle
Eagles (Descansa)
(Agencia Reforma)

Leaked documents show Facebook leveraged user data to fight rivals and help friends - NBC News
NBC News is releasing almost 7,000 pages of leaked documents showing how Facebook treated user data as a bargaining chip with external app developers.
A cache of leaked Facebook documents shows how the company's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, oversaw plans to consolidate the social network's power and control competitors by treating its users' data as a bargaining chip. The documents were obtained and are being published by NBC News.
This trove comprises approximately 7,000 pages in total, of which about 4,000 are internal Facebook communications such as emails, web chats, notes, presentations and spreadsheets, primarily from 2011 to 2015. About 1,200 pages are marked as "highly confidential."
Taken together, they show how Zuckerberg, along with his board and management team, found ways to tap Facebook users' data — including information about friends, relationships and photos — as leverage over the companies it partnered with. In some cases, Facebook would reward partners by giving them preferential access to certain types of user data while denying the same access to rival companies.
For example, Facebook gave Amazon special access to user data because it was spending money on Facebook advertising. In another case the messaging app MessageMe was cut off from access to data because it had grown too popular and could compete with Facebook.
All the while, Facebook planned to publicly frame these moves as a way to protect user privacy, the documents show. (...)
Zuckerberg's strategy to exert control over the app market during the time period covered by the documents triggered one Facebook employee to compare the company to villains from "Game of Thrones" and another to describe the treatment of outside app developers as "sort of unethical." But Zuckerberg's approach also earned admiration: Doug Purdy, then Facebook's director of product, described the CEO as a "master of leverage," according to the documents. (...)

Hi there. I just have a question about bee keeping. My dad has started reading books on how to keep bees. We live in America (I know, groan.) What books should I get him to read?
I’m from Australia so all my personal beekeeping books are Australian-based, but here are some good American based ones (I haven’t personally read them however):
Backyard Bees: A Guide for the Beginning Beekeeperby Doug Purdie
Beginning Beekeeping: Everything You Need to Make your Hive Thrive by Tanya Philip
The Bee Book by DK (i’ve actually read this one and it’s illustrations are lovely)
Beekeeper’s Handbook (4th ed.) by Sammataro and Avitabile
The Good Living Guide to Beekeeping by Dede Cummings
Hopes this helps!

AND THEN THERE WAS EVE (2017)
Starring Tania Nolan, Rachel Crowl, Karan Soni, Mary Holland, Dominic Bogart, Anne Gee Byrd, Mike Erwin, John Kassir, Jenica Bergere, Crystal Marie Denha, Christine Weatherup, Jack Cullison, Conrad Roberts, Bianca Von Krieg, Alixzandra Dove, Isley Reust, Vanessa Waters, Doug Purdy and Colette Freedman.
Screenplay by Colette Freedman & Savannah Bloch.
Directed by Savannah Bloch.
Distributed by Metamorphic Productions. 96 minutes. Not Rated.
Screened at the 2018 Women’s Film Festival.
And Then There Was Eve is not afraid to take on some big issues in modern life – one issue in particular – and treat them seriously, not just as controversial subjects. It’s smart, and sometimes very funny, and for a while fairly mysterious, and at the same time I have to admit that in the long run I’m not sure I buy it.
It is too bad, because it has a pretty cool concept. Alyssa (Tania Nolan) is a successful photographer who is married to a respected jazz musician and theorist. One night, when she is expecting him home for dinner, he never shows up. She finally falls asleep on the couch, and when she wakes up the place has been ransacked and there is no sign of her husband.
She calls the police, but they seem to be convinced that he left on his own. She constantly texts his phone, and they are received and read, but no answers ever come. When she checks with friends and acquaintances, no one seems to know what Alyssa is talking about. Even his mother does not seem to be concerned that he is the victim of foul play.
And strangely, for some reason Alyssa cannot remember anything about what happened – even so far as being unable to come up with his face in her mind.
When going through some of the books that her husband has written over the years, she remembers the forewords were always written by a music friend of his, a pianist named Eve (Rachel Crowl). Though they never had met before, Alyssa reaches out to her to try to get help in finding out what happened. Eve is not interested in helping at first, but eventually befriends Alyssa and tries to help her work out her grief.
I won’t spill on the main plot twist about what happened to her husband in And Then There Was Eve, even though it is a vital aspect of the entire film. Truthfully, that surprise is the film’s real calling card, so I don’t want to give it away. Sadly, that’s sort of like trying to talk about Moby Dick without mentioning the whale.
That said, when the big reveal does hit, you can’t un-see it. (And honestly, the hints start to pile up about half-way through the movie, but I had a bit of an inkling from the beginning.) It skews how you see the rest of the story.
Once you do know the secret, it makes you more and more worried about the mental health of Alyssa. How does she not see what’s going on? It seems so obvious. The audience has figured everything out much earlier than she does. Also, the reveal makes several of the earlier plot points seem unlikely, and some rather mean, on the part of one of the characters, though later there is a rather rote explanation that supposedly explains some of the hurtfulness.
Still, you must give And Then There Was Eve credit for being willing to take on a hot-button issue. It’s an imperfect movie, but it has much going for it. The cinematography, art direction, dialogue writing and acting are first rate. Particularly New Zealand-born star Tania Nolan, who is best-known for TV roles on Spartacus and Home & Away, she carries this tricky role with confidence and class. First-time director Savannah Bloch (film director, she has done work on the stage) has put together an impressive debut. And the jazz soundtrack is amazing.
Yet, I must admit, but I just don’t quite buy into the main character’s completely neurotic state of denial. I’m no psychologist, but I found it hard to believe that someone could so fully block out a traumatic experience from their mind. Perhaps I’m the one who is wrong, and they could, but it felt a little bit like a screenwriting cheat to me.
And Then There Was Eve is a complex film. It starts off as a thriller but ends up as a psychological study of two damaged people. Personally, I enjoyed the mystery more than the later dramatic sections, but if you are willing to give in to the movie’s conceit, it is most certainly worth seeing.
