Diligence when due diligence is due ...
In keeping with the origin of the fantum, and the continuing search for career extension activities, the search parameter is "announcer."
The return includes "Baseball PA Announcer (Seasonal)"
"Individual must have a good speaking voice and must be able to work all 70+ home games. Pay Rate: $50-75 per game based on experience.
"This is a seasonal position. Person needed to announce sponsored promotions and home and visitor players, etc. during all Durham Bulls home games."
Stadium (and promotional) Announcer for the honest-to-gosh, Bull Durham, Durham Bulls.
A $3500 paycheck for a memorable summer in North Carolina. A stretch of three months or so, to obtain a priceless memory, a story for the great grandkids, a "truth" to tell over beers with friends for many summers to come.
Living in a boarding house, surviving on stadium hot dogs, and Diet Pepsi. Rubbing elbows with the play-by-play and color announcers. Singing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game," played each evening and afternoon by the in-house organist. Watching in amazement as the next Ebby Calvin LaLoosh takes the mound, and throws a heater to Crash Davis behind the plate.
Hey! Imagine the job, imagine the play.

I believe in the church of baseball. I’ve tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones. I’ve worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there’s one hundred and eight beads in a Catholic rosary and there’s one hundred and eight stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn’t work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there’s no guilt in baseball, and it’s never boring, which makes it like sex. There’s never been a ballplayer slept with me who didn’t have the best year of his career. Making love is like hitting a baseball. You just got to relax and concentrate. Besides, I’d never sleep with a player hitting under .250. Not unless he had a lot of RBIs and was a great glove man up the middle. You see, there’s a certain amount of life wisdom I give these boys. I can expand their minds. Sometimes when I get a ballplayer alone, I’ll just read Emily Dickenson or Walt Whitman to him. And the guys are so sweet, they always stay and listen. Of course, a guy will listen to anything if he thinks it’s foreplay. I make them feel confident and they make me feel safe and pretty. ‘Course what I give them lasts a lifetime. What they give me lasts a hundred and forty two games. Sometimes it seems like a bad trade. But bad trades are part of baseball. Who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for God’s sake! It’s a long season, and you got to trust it. I’ve tried them all, I really have. And the only church that feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the church of baseball. - Annie Savoy, Bull Durham

Major League Baseball continues extorting taxpayer money out of numerous cities
Several years ago, Major League Baseball decided to eliminate numerous minor league baseball teams. They also updated the ballpark facility standards for minor league baseball teams. What does that mean exactly? What things must be upgraded or built? As Baseball America wrote when this update was announced, it is now mandatory for a ballpark to have “larger clubhouses, brighter stadium lights,…

The Bull
I know that many of us, me included, assumed the bull was the trademark of the American Tobacco Company. But for those who think this way, they are as far from the truth as you can get. James Buchanan Duke, the president of the W. Duke Sons and Company, (later to become the American Tobacco Company) detested the bull. When the Dukes were beginning to build a strong tobacco company, their…

Former Duke pitcher using NIL, mental health journey to help
Former Duke pitcher using NIL, mental health journey to help
Peyton St. George’s battle with her mental health during her sophomore season at Duke, at one point, made her want to pack her bags and leave Durham. The first player to commit to the Blue Devils’ softball program, started in 2018, St. George struggled to meet the high standards she had set for her career. In 2019, during her sophomore season, that snowballed into a loss of identity. Though her…
