Cringe ass Headcanons about the Don't Starve Together Gang's gender and sexuality
Tumblr media
Wilson - Aroace He cares more about science and being a smart ass than he does romance or sex.
Willow - Lesbian She seems like the type of girl that scares men away on purpose... Gremlin woman.
Wolfgang - Aroace He would rather settle down with a friend than a lover. The man also sees most of the people in the group as friends.
Wendy - Aroace She is a kid but even if she was an adult, her grief for her sister is stronger than any love for someone (be is romantic or what not)
WX-78 - Non-binary & Aroace They are canonically non-binary so the obvious is obvious. They don't feel romantic feelings but they can feel many other forms of love... they are not truly emotionless.
Wickerbottom - Asexual Biromantic She wouldn't mind a partner to help her at her library but she might not go with any of the people here... except maybe Wanda.
Woodie - Pansexual More like axe-sexual... Wait wouldn't that make every ship with him a polycule? He loves Lucy but if he was to love someone that wasn't a talking axe, he wouldn't care what gender they are.
Wes - Demiboy & Asexual Wes feels like the type to be referred to with he / them... Be it because of the character he plays or because that's what they refers to themself as.
Maxwell - Bisexual "I miss my wife, Wilson... I miss her a lot... I'll be back." he swings both ways but uh... who wants this pathetic man outside of Charlie?
Wigfrid - Demigirl & Bisexual This queen of theater (Sorry Charlie) uses she / them much the same way Wes does... that and she is just cool like that. Oh and she likes people.
Webber - Demiboy & Aroace His reasoning for being demiboy is because he is literally two beings and the spider is a they / it... also same thing as Wendy, his fixation on bugs and critters is stronger than dumb romantic love. (If he was like an adult)
Winona - Butch [Lesbian] Obvious thing is obvious, she has a girlfriend back on Earth that thinks she's dead. Also like look at her, she is straight up very butch leaning.
Warly - Gay The other side of the spectrum, Warly is probably gay... Totally not because Waokevale and another person influenced me with Warly x Woodie...
Wortox - Aroace Mortal concepts as "love" and "sex" doesn't interest this imp, he is only after chaos and fun.... Also Wortox gives zero DAMNs what pronouns you use on Wortox.
Wormwood - Non-Binary & Aroace The lad doesn't know or really feel that type of stuff [And it's not because he is a "kid", he is an adult.], Wormwood only uses he / him pronouns on himself because they sound nice but he doesn't mind any pronouns really.
Wurt - Aroace Wurt is a kid and she's more focus on creating a merm kingdom and learning to really care.
Walter - Aroace Kid doesn't care about romance but probably had a crush at some point.
Wanda - Asexual Lesbian Wanda doesn't have time to have sex with your mother, she is trying not to turn into dust.
Wonkey - Literally not even a real character.
If you scrolled down this far or read this, thanks! this is probably hell to read for people with like... reading issues (I have some form of it, don't worry)
I might do the DLC characters from Don't Starve next but uh... maybe never, just need to remember they exist.
ALSO!!!!!!! If none of the headcanons suit you then be happy knowing they are HEADcanons and are not real...
ALSO Also... sorry for no art bros, been doodling ocs shit for discord server and no one would be interested in that.

The other day I went in the DST files to go see all the lore “tips” that now show up during loading time (because the game usually loads so damn fast so I don’t get the chance to read it xD)  so I leave them here if it can interest someone:
TIP_TIME = "Time moves differently in the Constant. Instead of a monotonous forward march, seconds and eternities seem to throw caution to the wind and do-si-do backwards and forwards as they please.",
TIP_WILSON_UNI = "Wilson chose the path of an independent Gentleman Scientist after finding the university environment to be too stifling for a man of his ambitions. (The enormous bill the university sent him to pay for repairs to the chemistry lab had absolutely nothing to do with this.)",
TIP_WINONA_CHARLIE = "Growing up, Winona always looked out for her younger sister. Even now, she can't help but feel that one day she'll be able to reach out into the darkness and pull Charlie back.",
TIP_MAXWELL_SURVIVORS = "Once the King of the Nightmare Throne, Maxwell now finds himself surviving alongside the very people he once tormented. Needless to say, it makes for a bit of an... awkward atmosphere.",
TIP_MAXWELL_PAST = "Maxwell (né William Carter) was once nothing more than a humble stage magician, until the discovery of a mysterious tome changed the course of his life forever.",
TIP_DARKNESS_CHARLIE = "In the Constant, the darkness has a name. Have you met Charlie yet?",
TIP_WARNING = "\"Nothing here is what it seems. If you're reading this, keep an eye on the rabbits, don't trust the statues, and don't mistake that thing hanging in the night sky for the moon...\" -W",
TIP_WOODIE = "Even with all the steps Woodie has taken to control his were-curse, there's little that can be done on nights when the moon is at its fullest.",
TIP_WILLOW = "Nothing brings Willow more comfort than snuggling her faithful teddy bear Bernie, and committing a playful bit of arson.",
TIP_WICKERBOTTOM = "Wickerbottom is of the firm belief that the pen is mightier than the sword. Words hold great power when used correctly.",
TIP_WENDY = "Nothing could ever come between Wendy and her twin sister Abigail. Some bonds transcend even death.",
TIP_WEBBER = "Once upon a time, a little boy was swallowed up whole by a big hungry spider. Now they share everything; a body, a mind, and the name Webber.",
TIP_WALTER = "Walter's time in the Pinetree Pioneers has made him more prepared than most for surviving in the wilderness. Unfortunately, this is undermined somewhat by his blind fascination with monsters.",
TIP_THEM = "\"You can't run from Them forever. Take it from me, pal.\" -M",
TIP_PORTALS = "\"It seems that every time we discover a doorway out of this terrible place, it just leads to more strange worlds with new horrors to endure. Still, I can't give up hope that one day we'll find a doorway that will take us home...\" -W",

Epic dst age hcs and thoughts under the cut (skipping ppl with canon or basically canon ages (and also other ppl I don't feel like talking abt))
Maxwell: I'm starting with him since he's kind of my age compass so to speak, but of course he's on the older end of the cast. I imagine he's somewhere in his 60s, but he could also be in his mid to late fifties in my minds eye. I personally tend to lean towards early 60s though, like 62 probably?
Wolfgang: having been a full adult (hopefully anyways gmdjdnsh) during our pre Maxwell being Maxwell era, we can assume he's also on the older end of the cast, but perhaps not quite as old, or maybe even older if you believe in yourself. I tend to view him as like 58, but he could rly range anywhere from 40s-60s to me, but technically speaking he rly could be younger, especially taking into account that we don't know when he entered the constant, as that evidently can functionally pause a characters aging with the outside world as seen with Wendy. I definitely wouldn't go below 30 though, he ain't that young
Wx-78: this fucker. This fucker. It all felt so clean after their rework animation, but noooo we had to have a notably young Wagstaff at an event that fucks with the timeline of everything, so now I. Don't fucking know. I'm so scared klei please don't take early 60s Wx hc away from me Im begging y'all-
Wickerbottom: very clearly intended to be the eldest of the cast, I think it's safe to say she's like mid 60s at the absolute youngest. To me she's probably somewhere in her late 70s, but she could easily be much older. Tbh rn klei could pull anything out of their ass in regards to Wickerbottom they could say she's somehow 200 years old and we'd kind of just have to accept it as another unexplained fucked up Wickerbottom thing, they probably won't but itd be funny if they did. Just sequence of historical events with Wickerbottom standing in the background. She's like 79 idk.
Woodie: dude he could be like any age and I'd probably believe it. I personally tend to see him as late 30s, but I rly could see him ranging from late 20s to late 50s, and there's Nothing pointing in any specific age so idk. He can be 38 ig.
Wes: sigh. I don't fucking know. Somewhere in his 20s most likely. I don't like trying to pin down his age in my hcs nothing ever feels quite right to me </3
Wigfrid: this might be a bit older than most probably imagine her, but I've always seen her as a bit on the older end. Not like, Old old, but like somewhere in her late 30s to mid 40s probably? Mayyyybe early to mid 30s. Idk, I know she's an actress so having a successful career is more associated with younger age as opposed to older, but she's always given me big like. Star of a movie franchise that defines the first decade or so of her career in a way that sets her up for failure for the rest of it. Either way, I just cannot see her as being any younger than 30 personally.
Winona: now she's a bit of a tricky one. On the one hand, it should be easy to have a hc age for her since I have one for Charlie. On the other hand, I feel the need to think real hard abt what the age gap between the two is in my minds eye. It's hard because I can't in good faith go over 4 years, but I don't know how to narrow it from there. But with the 4 year limit, I think thatd put her in her late 30s early 40s ish in my hcs? I've been saying that a lot huh djdbrjdv
Warly: look me in my eyes. He's 50 at the youngest. He's like 65. Just trust me bro.
Wanda: nope
Wheeler: we have like no real info on her but she gives me early to mid 30s vibes? So like relatively young but still an established adult.
Walani: despite looking quite young, based on her dialogue it rly does sound like she's been around for longer than like freshly 20. I'm leaning towards early 30s, but I could also see her as late 20s or maybeeee mid 20s if we wanna stretch a lil bit.
Wagstaff: again, I genuinely don't fucking know how old hes supposed to be at this point and Im scared. But he's like 60 smth in my minds eye, around the same age as Wx
And it's 2 am so just imagine I said smth really insightful at the end here and now I shall pass the fuck out ✌

idk if you're still doing the character bingo (if you're not ignore this ask lol) but if you are i'd love to hear your takes on charlie and willow :3
Tumblr media
(I totally didn’t almost forget to do this idk what you’re talking about lol 😅)
Originally was gonna do two separate cards and then realized that there was only one square in the difference so I just combined them. The orange half square is for Willow.
By association to my fav character (we all know who that is lol) Charlie is a character I adore. I was a little on the fence in putting her down for the "The fandom is so mean smh" tile, but i honestly feel if anything that she's quite slept on. Maybe because I'm mainly a maxwil fic reader who's only been branching out a bit more now, but clearly unlike myself not many tend to bring up Maxlie or say anything about Charlie herself, if she is then it's Max feeling guilty the end. My fic Winter Complexities was heavily based on my want for a fic to show a parallel between the two ships, and now I often can't write any sort of ship fic with Maxwell if I don't bring up Charlie, it is simply against my nature lol I will continue to force past maxlie on everyone who opens up my ship fics. Maxlie is very precious to me and Charlie even more so, the woman has been through the wringer at this rate.
And next is Willow! Istg this fandom is wild with her, maybe I just haven't had to deal with a Willow main myself (my friend who got me into this game was a Webber main, and tested out Woodie, Wendy and Walter), I myself am a solid Wilson main (prev: Wendy main, trying out Winona and I've also tried WX, Max and Wanda(when I get a proper pc I'll hopefully play more of her)), but I've had my own Willow main moment (rip fire beefalo). It's only half cuz I think a lot of people write her pretty decently. In my own writing I have a lot of fun with her, she's one of those characters you can go wild with and I did that without even trying in my oc's fic, whole chapter was spotlight on her basically lol But yeah idk I suppose it's more an issue when people discuss her in game stuff, but it's more a running joke if anything it seems. Also as someone who is very much dying for the lore the Wickerbottom animatic took me out, holy shit I can't wait for when Klei gives us more, like the end of that animatic??? Working with Maxwell pre-constant??? I n e e d to know more!! I have so many thoughts after that and I'm positively screaming

Light in the night
Another fanfic of @quetzalcoatlzz ‘s western au comic, link here if you would rather read it on AO3, there is a link here
Charlie looked out her window from her bed. It was clear out, and she could see the moon. She sighed, rubbing her forehead. She could not sleep.
It was silent.
She closed her eyes. It had been a long day. One of her girls had gotten sick, and she had had to contact Maxwell’s new boytoy and have him take care of her. She would be fine, the doctor had assured, but Charlie couldn’t help worrying.
On top of that, a letter had come from her parents.
Charlie’s family was never rich, but she was still sheltered. Her older sister and her parents had worked extremely hard to help her become a proper lady. They had been thrilled she had secured such a wealthy man. After the... incident, she had promised her parents they would marry when they reached Constant, ignoring their protests that traveling with a man she was not married too would be scandalous. She felt terrible for deceiving them, but she could not tell them the truth- she was not a pampered mistress of the Carter ranch, but Madame of a whorehouse. This was not at all what they had wanted for her.
The only one who knew the truth- about her and Maxwell’s... preferences, about the broken off engagement, all of it- was her dear sister Winona. Winona understood everything- Charlie knew that the relationship with the female friend Winona was living with was not exactly chaste. Winona had urged her to tell their parents, at least about the broken off engagement, if nothing else, but Charlie still couldn’t work up the courage to tell them. In her (extremely rare) visits home, Maxwell would even come with her and lie. She was jealous of the close and open relationship he had with his family- they knew of their broken engagement, and the reasons, and had accepted it. Darling Wendy still called her Aunt, when she saw her, though.
She looked at the unopened letter on her nightstand. Every time she got one, she was terrified they had found out- if they heard about everything...
It would be better for her mental state to open it, but she found she could not. The letter opener lay on top of it, taunting her.
THONK
Charlie jumped wildly and yelped as someone banged into her window.
“CHARLIE!! YOU AWAKE?”
Charlie rolled her eyes as she calmed down. She opened the window. “How could I not be, after that racket?”
Willow grinned. “Can I come in?” Charlie nodded, and Willow began to try to get in through the window.
“Not through the window! Through the door! Honestly, Willow, it’s like you’re a secret lover trying to catch a moment alone with your beloved without alerting her parents.”
“I am,” Willow said cheerfully. “Except the parents part.”
“Exactly, which is why you can come through the door. This is my house.”
Willow grumbled, but went to the door to be let in. Charlie lit a candle, put on a robe, and walked through the rooms to get to the back door.
“Kiss?” Willow asked, taking off her hat. She helpfully pointed at her lips to indicate where they were.
“Very well,” Charlie said. She leaned over and pecked Willow on the lips, but before she could pull away, Willow deepened the kiss and put her hand on the back on Charlie’s head. Charlie relaxed into it. Being with Willow calmed her spirits.
Charlie pulled away when it became apparent Willow had no problem having sex right where they were. “Come along, dear.”
“It’s a bit chilly tonight,” Willow remarked, scampering after Charlie. “Just, incredibly cold. I’ve never seen it get this bad, really. You might freeze to death.”
Willow cut in front of Charlie to open her bedroom door for her. Charlie smiled. “If you’re asking if you can make a fire in my room, you may.”
“Yess,” Willow said, no regard for her noise level. She took Charlie’s candle and began fussing with the fireplace. It really had grown slightly chilly with the window open. Charlie closed it, as well as the curtains.
“Where is Bernie?” Charlie asked, taking off her robe and climbing back into bed.
“Maxwell has nice stables,” Willow said.
“You walked all the way here from Maxy’s stables?? Why Willow, you must be exhausted!”
“Any amount of exhaustion is worth it if I can inconvenience Maxwell,” Willow said. “Besides, he’s got great food for the horses. Bernie likes it there.”
“Do you need food? A drink?”
“I just need you,” Willow said, about to climb on Charlie’s bed.
“Absolutely not! No, Willow, if you want to get on my bed with my good linens, you’re going to take a bath first.”
Willow grimaced. “Really? Do I have to?”
“Yes! But here, don’t make that face. I’ll wash you myself.”
“...Fine.”
“Come, help me set up the tub.”
Having Willow to help lug around the heavy tub and buckets of water made the whole experience much faster. Willow was much stronger than Charlie, and had the added bonus of “liked to show off.”
“Alright,” Charlie said. “Get in.”
Willow seemed to have forgotten the bath was for her. She frowned. “What if I washed you instead?”
“You don’t have to sleep with me, you know,” Charlie teased. “You can sleep on my floor. I can find a blanket.”
Willow threw back her head and groaned. “FINE.” She threw off her clothes. Charlie watched appreciatively.
Willow was not what most people considered attractive for a woman, but Charlie didn’t hold much stock in their opinions. Willow was toned, from hours of manual labor and horseback riding. She wore no corset, but instead wore nothing but men’s clothes. Her breasts, unlike Charlie’s, were small enough to need no support. She was thin, but strong. Her beautiful black hair was thick and shiny, if you ignored the layers of soot and dirt.
“At least it’s hot,” Willow said, stepping in.
“Just below boiling, just how you like it,” Charlie said. She had a rag, and used a bit of her soap on it. Rose scented. Willow had admitted a while back that she liked smelling of Charlie’s soap.
Willow seemed to be enjoying the heat, now she was actually in it. Charlie smiled, and took her hand. The nails were cut short, but caked with dirt. She began scrubbing.
The water became murky as Charlie cleaned Willow.
“You must have half the dust in Texas on you,” Charlie said.
“Sometimes I roll in the dirt,” Willow said.
Willow was practically boneless from Charlie’s rhythmic, gentle and careful cleaning; she now looked like an entirely different person. It was almost done, all that was necessary now was to rinse Willow’s hair.
She unbraided the braids, running her fingers through it. The cloud of dust made her sneeze.
“My hair too? Really?”
“I’ll brush your hair after,” Charlie soothed. “Give you a nice scalp massage.”
Charlie had to rinse the hair five times before she was certain all the grime was out of the hair.
“Alright, all done,” Charlie said. Willow immediately bolted out of the tub, getting water everywhere.
Willow dried herself with a towel, then rummaged in Charlie’s drawers to find the clothes Charlie kept for her. She pulled out a nightgown and put it on.
“Sit on the floor in front of me,” Charlie instructed. Willow complied. Charlie began to brush the hair.
“You have beautiful hair,” Charlie said.
“It doesn’t really do anything I want it to,” Willow said. “Always slips out of the braids! So irritating. I don’t know how fancy ladies like you keep your hair in those crazy styles all the time.”
“Part of it is not rolling in dirt, dear.”
“Well, I guess I’m never going to be able to do a fancy smancy hairstyle then.”
“You never were going to in the first place.”
“Ah! True.”
Willow settled against Charlie’s legs. Charlie began to massage Willow’s scalp.
“That’s nice,” sighed Willow. “I haven’t seen you in ages. I missed you a lot.”
“It’s only been a few days.”
“AGES.” Willows groaned. “You know Wilson- that doctor- he’s living with Maxwell now? He only comes to town for work. Goes back at night.”
“Mr. Higgsbury is truly living with him? Maxy must be very fond of him.”
“Why can’t I live with you,” Willow complained. “Why does that awful man get nice things and I, objectively the best person ever, do not?”
“Am I not a nice thing?”
“You’re the BEST THING!”
Charlie chuckled. “You’re the best thing to me too.” She kissed her head. “I love you.”
“If I wasn’t a wanted criminal I would be... Your housewife.”
Charlie laughed. “You? A housewife? In what world?”
“Well, I suppose I could be your bodyguard and scare away men who bother your girls.”
“That would be nice.”
Willow pulled away and turned around.
“You’re nice. Want me to make you feel nice too?”
Charlie nodded. Willow beamed.
“Nothing too much tonight, though,” Charlie said. “I’m tired. We can do more tomorrow.”
“Alright!”
The sex was calm, and not rushed, but Charlie finished rather quickly.
She breathed heavily for a few moments before speaking.
“Honestly, you devious thing, where did you even learn that?”
“I like to put things in my mouth.” Willow was on top of her now, and Charlie kissed her. They kissed passionately for a moment, until Willow pulled back.
“Let’s go to sleep. Did you have a long day?”
“Yes,” Charlie sighed. “But I feel better with you here.”
They climbed until the covers. Charlie turned and saw the letter on the nightstand.
“What’s wrong?”
“A letter from my parents.”
“Want me to kill them for you?”
“No,” Charlie snorted. “You can’t kill all of my problems.”
“I can try.”
Charlie looked at it for a moment longer, before sitting back up and opening it. She smiled at Willow- her simply being there gave her enough courage to open the letter.
She hesitantly read it.
“Dearest Charlie,
We miss you terribly! Our neighbors have just had a baby girl, and she reminds us so much of you when you were her age. You were so small and perfect. We thought to ourselves, no matter what happens, we will love this child with all our hearts, and support her in all things.
We hope you and your husband create a little miracle of your own very soon.
All our love,
Mother and Father.”
Charlie set down the letter. Her anxiety was eased a bit, but she stared pensively into the fire.
“Willow, I think it may be time I told them the truth.”
Willow pulled her close, kissing her forehead.
“I’ll be with you whether they accept it or not. Don’t worry.”
“I love you,” said Charlie.
“I love you too.”
Charlie fell asleep quickly held in Willow’s arms.

How much do you think would the story change if Wilson and Charlie were the triplets' guardians instead of Maxwell?
Okay so it's probably gonna take me a while to answer this cause there's a lot to it and it's a really interesting question. Mostly because this is the version of the story that actually....hews a little closer to original Don't Starve canon.
So Wendy and Webber are picked up not by a washed up actor, but by a very normal seeming couple. Their aunt and uncle, who aren't well liked by the town, which is initially confusing because they seem like perfectly nice people. Wendy's initial investigations in town, instead of revealing a town that has a general kind of pity for the guy who lost his wife, reveals that instead the prevailing theory for the past several years has been that Charlie and Wilson killed Maxwell, or otherwise got rid of him, in order to remarry to each other. (These rumors tend to fall apart when you consider that Charlie and Wilson knew each other well before Charlie met Maxwell, but no one particularly cares enough to know that; they showed up all at once, weirdly close, and Maxwell disappeared mysteriously shortly after the grand opening of the house that he inherited, fixed up with his money, and left everything to Charlie and Wilson. It's suspicious, is what I'm saying.)
Webber doesn't believe this at all, but Wendy is a suspicious little sort, so a secondary plot thread starts in the first act regarding her trying to figure out where they hid the body. Wilson spends all his time in the basement, which everyone else is forbidden from entering, except Charlie (and on very rare occasions, Charlie's sister Winona, who came up to live with them shortly after Maxwell's disappearance to console her and just never left). Winona doesn't seem to like what they do down there much, but she never refuses to go down. Obviously Wilson is building the dimensional transporter.
It's much harder for them to get into the basement when they're being actively kept out by someone who's almost constantly down there, and they only manage, of course, the night that Wilson intends to turn on the machine for the first time and try to pull Maxwell back (well, not the first time; he's tried before, causing several all-town blackouts, but he's sure he's got it this time!) As a result, Abigail isn't there and Webber is still a human boy when Halloween rolls around and they realize Wilson's left the elevator unlocked in his excitement and roll on down.
The resulting backlash from the machine is a lot more violent than in Winona's short film; the relocation to the basement was what it needed to work, building it in the doorway that existed between worlds to stabilize the connection, and the kids end up pulled into the Constant with Wilson, which is where Wendy finds Abigail and Webber gets attacked by a spider, eaten, and subsequently becomes, well, Webber.
This section is where we pretty heavily diverge from the actual story itself, as I imagine this version of the Adventure Route would make up the bulk of acts 2 and 3, rather than simply pulling Maxwell back and having it done with; after all, Wilson's machine has created a stable portal, but it hasn't taken them directly to Maxwell. Charlie acts as mission control via radio and we swap between Wilson and the kids in the Constant, doing a weird version of Adventure Mode where Wilson is trying to figure out why his husband is acting like he has no idea who they are, and Charlie, Winona, and the rest of the house in the real world, trying to put the cops off their scent when they came around asking about the latest blackout and realized that Charlie's second husband and two children are missing.
They come across the mirror carnival in the Constant instead of the real world, who try to entice them Coraline-style into giving up the quest; Skits and the gang keep taunting them along the way and occasionally they'll 'accidentally' get a clue from Knight; Watcher and Rene inevitably show up to do some exposition dump, and the whole thing climaxes with the arrival in the throne room and whatever sacrifice ends up being necessary to defeat Them and return Maxwell. Maybe Wilson offers himself instead, despite Maxwell not remembering him, and that's what triggers Maxwell himself to start fighting back. Maybe Charlie catches up with them or is kidnapped from the real world by Them as a bargaining chip; or maybe something else entirely happens. There's unlikely to be a fully happy ending in this one without a fight, as meeting Them on their own ground is inherently different from meeting them in the more stable and grounded real world.

Tumblr media
ive been posting about my codex!wendy au on twitter for a couple days now but instead of just copy and pasting what i wrote on there ill actually expand upon it a little. also this post is gonna be really long but theres pictures so i hope that helps
if theres any moment where the timeline splits (not including moments before this that may have had a butterfly effect), it would be william carters train crash in 1904, which.... did not happen in this universe. he, with no small amount of shame, moves in with his rich and successful brother.
wendy and abigail grow up having, essentially, an extra parent, which thankfully means abigail didnt die. with their mother long gone, when jack dies in 1919 (not of magic-y reasons, just like... a heart attack or something), william is left to take care of the twins alone. he tries to find jobs so he could work himself to death and at least save his nieces, but due to his general lack of competence, he isnt finding much that can actually sustain them all.
wendy and abigail, who have noticed this despite williams protests that everything is fine, decide to do the smartest thing they can think of: run away from home so william only needs to take care of himself. im sure you can see why this is a bad idea, even in a universe without the codex umbra, but boy does it get significantly worse for them very quickly.
wendy gets hit by a car. abigail runs for help, but by the time she gets back, wendy is fine. and clutching a strange book.
over the course of the next few weeks, wendy and abigail manage to scrounge up a little money, and between this, wendy shows abigail some neat tricks the codex umbra taught her. abigail suggests, a bit jokingly, that maybe they could become magicians. the codex wendy thinks this is a great idea.
Tumblr media
[transcription of text: “THE AMAZING MARY, Performing feats to astound and mystify”]
at the codex umbras suggestion, wendy adopts a stage name, “mary,” and the twins perform their first show. it goes very well, and they make a lot of money, so they decide to keep doing this, and hopefully save enough to go back home and take care of their uncle.
mary and abigail perform many magic shows, and end up becoming beloved around the country. admittedly they do get a bit lost in the sauce, but theyre teenagers, wouldnt you? except, mary often times seems to forget they theyre doing this for their uncle at all. in fact, mary seems all-around real different these days.
mary becomes far colder, more secretive, and will lock herself in her study for days at a time. abigail notices her sisters change in personality, and attributes it to the fame going to her head. unlike charlie, abigail never realized quite how deep mary had gotten into the codex.
mary and abigails final act goes very similarly to maxwell and charlies. theyre going through the routine when something goes horribly wrong, and theyre grabbed by the codex and taken to the constant. mary becomes the queen, and abigail the night monster.
mary rules much like her uncle, and brings most of the same people into her world. the differences are as such:
maxwell is still william carter, who replaces wilson as the “all-around” type. if he was in the game, he would only have slightly lower hunger drain, and otherwise be identical to wilson without a beard
charlie has taken the role of wendy, so to speak... winona died in a factory accident (the very same one that would have taken her to the constant in another life), and charlie keeps her soul in a rose
webber becomes the “canonical” protagonist instead of wilson. i would have made it william, but it is ultimately important that the protagonist is someone uninvolved in the carter relationship chart
wilson is actually a half-decent scientist so he replaces winona, i guess
Tumblr media
adventure mode is the same but i wrote some quotes for funsies, here we go:
A Cold Reception
Looks like you found my portal.
Haven’t you learned “curiosity kills the cat?”
Let’s see if I can’t up the stakes a bit.
King of Winter
Oh, you survived, that’s fun.
Just remember, you need to be lucky four more times...
But I only need to be lucky once.
The Game is Afoot
Huh? You’re still alive?
That’s... impressive. I’m interested to see how this will go.
Break a leg out there.

How do you do?
This has been fun. You’re a good playmate.
But I think you should know I had a nasty habit of breaking my toys.
Two Worlds
How do you do?
I know you may not want to make another deal with me, but...
I’ll just give you all of this for free.
Food, gold, pigs, anything you want from this world.
All I want in return is for you to stay put, okay?

Go ahead.
Keep going.
I think we both know what will happen.

Epilogue
You found me.
Was it what you hoped for?
Forgive me for not giving you a curtsy.
For what it’s worth, you were a fun playmate.
To me, at least. Maybe not to Them.
Maybe They’ll find you more fun when you’re here.
They’ll show you beautiful, terrifying things.
It’d be best if you didn’t fight it.
I’ve worked so hard to make this world.
I’ve made it so pretty for Them.
I thought I was so smart. So needed.
But even Queens are bound to the board.
In the end, I can’t change the game.
I’m not quite sure what They want.
Perhaps we’re just performing for Them.
Though that may be my mind playing tricks on me.
Hm. What year is it? Time is weird here.
Go ahead, stay as long as you like.
It’s not like I can throw you out.
Or you could put the key in and get it over with.
It’s a lose-lose situation.
That’s life, though, isn’t it?
...I think I’m done for now.
i also drew some disconnected cyclum-ish comics:

Nightmare Headcanons by wrath-is-a-deadly-sin
I have a few headcanons for people’s nightmares and their reactions after - if I give you a few would you help me with some of the characters I’m less familiar with? Either way here is some of my headcanons (will be long, really long sorry, thought about this a lot) (not sure if this could be considered close to canon???)
Ey! These are really good! And more than happy to help with the ones you couldn’t figure out. =) And hey, since nightmares are a loose canon, anything kind of goes. (And honestly some of my own headcanons are like this too so no worries!) Alrighty, let’s get this headcanon show on the road!
Wilson - He’ll wake up and have a very violent reaction and will attack anyone who tries to calm him. It’s sometimes necessary to hold him still until he calms down and realizes where he is. His nightmares are often fights where he is surrounded by the others dead bodies
Willow - She will wake up with a gasp but quickly realizes it was a nightmare and likes fire and someone to talk to her so she doesn’t think about it. Often about being alone and in the dark being hunted by shadows
Wolfgang - Wakes up with a shout and will shake for a while. Finds it best if people talk to him, doesn’t like contact until he’s back in the present. Dreams of his time in service or violent battles in The Constant.
Wendy - Dreams of her sister’s death or trying to bring her back with the flower but it not working no matter what she does. Likes to see Abigail to remember her sister is by her side. Her reaction is often waking up with tears very quietly. Will accept hugs from those she trusts
WX-78 - WX-78 doesn’t really dream much. Though when they do it’s usually dreams of dominating the world. So, probably no nightmares save maybe frying their circuits in water. They just deal with their nightmares on their own because they don’t need help from any organic life forms. They just wake up quietly and go about their business.
Wickerbottom - Rarely dreams when she sleeps as she is usually too tired. After what few nightmares she has she will sit by the fire and try to read and drink a warm drink of some sort. Usually of losing everyone in fires or of bad situations in The Constant. Wakes up quickly but not violently
Woodie - Woodie has nightmares of losing Lucy. Both how she is now and before she got turned into an axe. He hates remembering how sick she was. Usually feels better by just talking with someone or Lucy herself about his nightmares. Also has nightmares of losing everyone. He tends to wake up shouting or gasping before composing himself.
Wes - Wakes up silent and with no visible reaction other than increases breathing, likes physical contact and quiet talking. Often dreams of when he was trapped in the throne room.
Maxwell - Nightmares of what happened to get him here and of Charlie, Charlie dying, killing him ect. And possibly PTSD of the train crash he’d rather just forget. There’s a lot of things he wish his nightmares wouldn’t remind him of. He tends to like coping on his own terms since as usual doesn’t want to show weakness. (Which hurts him in the long run with bottling things up.) He tries to keep his reactions as quiet as possible but he does tend to wake up screaming.  (William is about the same though he tends to be more open with talking if coaxed into doing so. Mainly by Wilson.)
Webber - Dreams of their friends and found family dying or getting hurt. Likes to find and hug whoever died and often wakes up crying and sobbing.
Wigfrid - Nightmares of when she or her friends have died. Failed battles are never fun to remember, especially with what happened. Tends to feel better by doing a patrol around the camp and doing some practice sparring. It gives her assurance that she cane protect her friends. Wakes up with a gasp and shaking like crazy.
Warly - Warly has nightmares of never seeing his maman ever again or They possibly doing something to her. Talking this out with someone usually helps or cooking a meal to get his nerves to calm down. He’s doing his best not to lose hope. His reactions are quiet but he does freeze up when he awakes.
Wormwood - Likes to watch everyone else in the camp to remind themself everyone is still ok, will often sit by a tree and just watch in silence, will accept and enjoy company but doesn’t like to talk until they feel better.
Winona - While she is stoic about it, she still does have nightmares about what happened at the factory, though its worse in the nightmare because she’ll see Genny and the rest of her co-workers dead and Nightmare Monsters everywhere. She tends to cope with building things to get her mind off it. She sits up quickly, gasping when she wakes up, her body trembling.
Wortox - He has nightmares of unintentionally killing everyone in the camp with his powers. He usually calms down after checking on everyone but it’s something he does worry about a lot. Usually doing some nice deeds around the camp can calm him down or playing with fireworks with Willow. He tends to wake up teary eyed and shaking.
Wurt - Wurt has nightmares of being turned on by the others. She needs assurance that this is not the case but it is something she still worries about. She feels better after Wickerbottom reads some stories to her. She’ll usually wake up crying and wanting a hug.
And that should do it. Thank you so much for the submission! Hope you all enjoy and much loves to wrath-is-a-deadly-sin for their submission!

Warning: this post is long. If you are interested on my theories on DST lore you can click on  “Keep reading” below. If you don’t you can skip it. This whole post is the ultimate evidence that studying Foreign Literature at university was a really bad idea as now I see hidden subtexts everywhere! And having had some years to work on this theory didn't help either... I will be happy to see it crushed by Klei guys themselves with the release of the actual lore in a few weeks, because they are up to something big and I'm ready to have my mind blown!
I think it's time for me to confess a little Don't Starve Together headcanon of mine I never really revealed to anyone until now: I seriously think that Wilson might be Charlie and Winona's younger brother, or at least a younger half-brother. I am not saying this just because their haircuts bear some similarities. There are some serious clues in game leading to that direction, and I found basically no counterarguments strong enough to deny the theory. I don’t know if these are funny coincidences or not, but they were enough to fill more than four Words pages and I am not one to believe in coincidences.
So the evidences I gathered could be summed up like this:
Charlie and Wilson act like they know each other in A New Reign Cinematic; she is the Night Monster, so of course they know each other! However, why did she choose to set him free revealing her true form despite her wanting to hide it and why did she let Wilson live to tell the tale?
It is confirmed that Charlie has one sister, but there might be other siblings or family members no one mentioned yet. And thanks to the information released by Klei it is possible to confirm that Wilson is young enough to possibly be Charlie and Winona's brother;
There are clues that Winona might be born into a rich family she estranged herself from because of her lifestyle (and possibly guilt for Charlie's supposed demise); the same applies to Wilson too, though the reasons of his estrangement are not clear;
We still have no way to know exactly where all these characters are from exactly, but it is implied that Winona traveled through all the USA and that Wilson at least completed his education in the USA.
It is confirmed that Wilson is a European immigrant; if we take Charlie’s Rose species name in account, her and Winona could possibly be of Anglo-Irish descent.
Wilson and Shadow Charlie share a similar haircut (and so does Winona to a lesser extend); Winona and Charlie's face structure is similar and it looks totally different from Wilson's, but there is an example in game that blood relatives could not look like each other at all (Maxwell and Wendy).
Wilson's new darkness quote is very similar to one of Maxwell's quotes about Abigail.
Wilson seems to have personality traits and interests in common with both Charlie and Winona;
We were told that Winona went to the Constant to save someone: despite their relationships being known, Charlie and Robert Wagstaff might not be the person she was looking for, at least according to her original character quotes.
The explanations and the results of some researches I made to confirm or deny my theory are better expressed below divided in four parts.
1) A New Reign Cinematic
This less than two minutes cinematic is mute like almost every Don't Starve related animation, but it's so full of emotion it's simply beautiful. And it is the only time we can see Charlie being herself before becoming the Shadow Queen, so I watched it again and again, even slowed down so I could fully enjoy every seconds of it (and a lot of DST fellow fans out there probably did too).
I have to admit that I always had the impression that Charlie booped Wilson's nose before setting him free, and that was for sure a factor in developing this theory as you boop your boyfriend or your little brother's nose, not a unknown person you just met. But Wilson being Charlie's brother would explain why she chose to set him free in the first place: before Wilson there was Maxwell, and despite all the powers he gained by being the Shadow King him being trapped on the Throne was still a torture. Wilson did not want to become the new King and so he was desperately fighting against Them and their corruption. Charlie hates to be seen, yet she chose to reveal herself to Wilson and she became the new Queen to prevent him to become like herself and Maxwell and this is a thing that every good big sister would do for their little brother. Furthermore, Charlie had to muster some serious self-control before doing that stunt because I am seriously convinced that any other character in Wilson's place would have died there and then. Charlie was smiling at the beginning of the cinematic, but her eyebrows betrayed her being extremely worried too. When Wilson is not in the Throne Room anymore she is much more relaxed, because she did what she came for and Wilson survived: it doesn't matter what will become of her from then on, and maybe that factor made the fusion with her Shadow self possible.
And about Maxwell, I think that dragging her theoretical little brother in that hellish world where Charlie herself could be the cause of his death would be a more than valid reason for Charlie to hate Maxwell's guts even more than she did before. That could be the reason why Maxwell’s death caused by Darkness is listed as "Charlie" instead. I checked it, despite Winona is canonically able to recognize Charlie as the Darkness like Maxwell, her death cause is still listed as "Darkness". But it is impossible to tell if it is a developers' oversight.
2) What we know about their backgrounds
Digging into the William Carter Puzzles Charlie's ad requisition caught my curiosity. It says "should have a curious demeanor and a keen interest in the mysteries of the universe." This description could fit Wilson too. We know next to nothing about who Charlie used to be before she became the Night Monster, aside that she was William Carter's assistant and she cared a lot about him. In her letters Charlie mentions only one sister, Winona, because she frequently visited her (or, more likely, they lived together when she was not working with Maxwell). But frequent visits to her sister don't exclude the possibility of other relatives or siblings existing somewhere else. This happened in 1905 and Charlie disappeared the following year, exactly fifteen years before the events of Don't Starve in 1921. Charlie and Winona were young adults and they probably moved away from their family. According to Charlie's last letter her family owned a cabin used as holiday house in BC, implying that Charlie and Winona's birth family was been rich enough to afford a holiday house in the first place.
BC commonly stands for "British Columbia" in Canada, a popular place for a family to have a holiday cabin nowadays. But it can also stand for Bay City, Michigan. Bay City is located near Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron, so it could be a possible place to locate a holiday cabin for the family. For some bonus points, Bay City merged with West Bay City in 1905; West Bay City was created in 1877 from the union of the villages of Banks, Salzburgh and Wenona. Wenona is an alternative spelling of the name "Winona": if the Bay City theory is correct she might have been born during a time where the old name of the area could have been still used by population and her parents might have liked it enough to name their first daughter like the old village. I wanted to see if BC could have another meaning and that was the result. But it might be just a funny coincidence.
Back to the job question, Charlie actually replied for an application that actually has not a great paycheck (during that time most performers were barely able to sustain themselves and Maxwell himself got some debts during his first years) and that required a cultured person who knew how to appear in front of an audience: during that time having an education was still a luxury for wealthy families and same goes with clothes dapper enough to look good by Maxwell's side. Her Shadow Queen's form fancy dress seems to confirm this theory. So the only real reason she could need to work is her living really far away from her family and that required her to look for any kind of job to be able to survive for the long run.
What do we know about Wilson? As he is in his 30s in 1921, he was a likely teenager in 1906, and as Klei recently said, "maybe a European USA Immigrant? We never really picked a home land for him." Thinking about this last statement, we can say that during that time that description could fit basically most of the American population back in the 1920s. They actually said nothing. BUT, in 2014, a fan posted on Tumblr another message from Klei that gives us some interesting information: these are the evidences that despite it all it might be legit:
I checked on DS and DST credits, there really is a Jan Hatchings.
The first thing Jan says is that Klei prefers to be the fan finding out about the past of the characters exploring the game: a nice way to say they are not allowed to spill too many beans. (I want the character updates and the new characters! I want to know what they are hiding!)
He confirmed some information we already knew (Wilson being in his 30s, the game being set in early 1920s) adding that he was living in New England at the time of the trailer: New England is the Northeastern area of the United States, it is bordered with Canada, three of the most important colleges of the United States are there (Yale, Harvard and the MIT) and there are a lot of woods. The perfect area for a lonesome scientist to live in.
He mentions his family not wanting to talk to him;
Jan invites the person who originally shared the message to join the official forum.
So Wilson most likely completed his instruction in the United States or he sought affiliation with American colleges, and that would be weird for a person who grew up in the United Kingdom, as he would be already close to some of the most prestigious and oldest colleges and academic associations in the world. That's why I think the "immigration" part might mean that he was born into a British family immigrated in the US and he actually grew up in the United States (and maybe not even Klei knows if Wilson's family moved in before or after he was born). As he had a nanny as a kid and, as already pointed out, college education was something that only wealthy families could afford back then, we can assume Wilson was born into a rich family that for some reason moved to America.
Like BC, New England area is pretty popular for its holiday cabins so it makes sense for Wilson to have lived into one of them. He was isolated, yet possibly close to a scientific center of interest like a university. Even if he bought the house or someone else did it for him, for sure Wilson needed some money to live in there and being a Gentleman Scientist is a risky profession for a safe paycheck. Quoting Wikipedia:
"An independent scientist (modern gender-neutral term historically also known as gentleman scientist) is a financially independent scientist who pursues scientific study without direct affiliation to a public institution such as a university or government-run research and development body. [...] Most independent scientists have at some point in their career been affiliated with some academic institution, such as Charles Darwin, who was affiliated with the Geological Society of London. [...] Self-funding has the disadvantage that funds may be more restricted; [...] It also permits the scientist to have greater control over research directions, as funding bodies direct grants towards interests that may not coincide with that of the scientist. [...] Scientists may choose to work on unusual projects with high risk of failure also when the grant system does not fund them. A scientist could be attributed the status of independent scientist if they work on such projects during a gap between two academic positions, for example."
So Wilson being a Gentleman Scientist means that he was the one and only person who worked on his own projects with no external funds from government and scientific institutions. If his research failed he could have ended in some serious economic trouble. He might have had some help from universities, but that could have not be enough. But it makes sense for Wilson being a Gentleman Scientist if his parents died and he inherited their money or a part of it. That would make him economically independent enough to perform his experiments with no considerable help.
But then, if his parents are presumably dead, who is the family who doesn't want to speak to him? It would be easy to say that his extended family thinks him to be a mad scientist and decided they don't want to have nothing to do with him. But this doesn't deny the theory "Wilson is Charlie's brother": if we take this theory in account, his only currently known immediate family members are Charlie and Winona. Charlie was presumed dead in 1906, while Winona probably got estranged from her parents because of her lifestyle and maybe even accused to have caused her sister's death. Even if their parents are dead, why Winona should think that her brother would be different? To her he is just a spoiled child who attended a fancy university and that probably spends all the day talking nonsense with other eggheads. Also her constant moving through the country will make keep contacts really difficult, so she simply didn't. Sadly a lot of people do it for even pettier reasons.
And, for some bonus point, Wickerbottom recognizes Charlie's Rose as a "Rosa Macdub", or a "Dublin Bay climbing rose". A rich Irish family immigrating from a country where uprisings were a Tuesday for at least one century would make sense. And it would not even directly conflict with the theory as the richest families residing in Ireland were of English descent and all Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom until 1919. So despite Wilson being a perfect "British gentleman" kind of character, the possibility of Charlie and Winona being Irish or Anglo-Irish descent doesn't deny the theory. But I don't know if this could count as a clue about Charlie's family origin as the Dublin Bay climbing rose was actually bred for the first time in 1975 in New Zealand, with peculiar characteristics and resistance that make me think that they might be the reason for it to be chosen as Charlie’s symbol despite its anachronism. And just because of this the thing that concerns me more about this rose is not the possible reference to Charlie's birthplace, but an explanation of how Wickerbottom is able to recognize a flower from 1975 without knowing what is a license plate!
3) The similarities between the characters in game
One of the things most evident in the cinematic was that Wilson and Charlie shared a similar haircut and hairline. Haircuts are not hereditary, but unmodified hairlines and hair textures are. Winona looks a lot like Charlie, but she doesn't resemble Wilson at all except their being two light skinned people with dark hair and solid black eyes in game. Also, Winona seems to have a different hairline than Wilson and Charlie when uncovered (except in the Gorge's vignette where she sports a small widow's peak), but the hairstyle is still similar to theirs, with only one "point" out of three. However, there are even deeper similarities between these characters: Charlie is the "bookworm" sister, interested in the "mysteries of the universe"; Winona hates books and prefers to work on her mechanical creations with a trial-and-error approach. And then there is Wilson, who sits perfectly in between these mindsets. That was one of the reasons why at first I was shocked by Winona when she was released: when I already suspected that Wilson and Charlie might be related it is revealed that Charlie's sister is a work-alcoholic engineer with a weird haircut and basically a female Wilson with a tape and the ability to dodge. (Piccolo approves.) Their similarities could be attributed to lazy developers, but what if that was actually a clue of them being actually related? Also, it is implied that Winona was grown up in a estranged wealthy family and it is confirmed that she dislikes fancy things and formalities: the same could be said about Wilson! Seriously, there are too many coincidences to be a random chance. (And that, ladies and gentlemen was the point where the theory became a full fledged headcanon. But I am not related to Klei in any way, so this is still the theory of a deluded fan that loves to make theories and Klei will destroy it in a few days with the new lore.)
And what about avoiding Charlie? Well, this could have a pretty simple explanation, reflected by their body shapes: Winona spent the last fifteen years of her life enduring all the kinds of manual jobs, so she actually gained some muscle mass and speed movement that she uses in game to avoid the attacks of her beloved sister. Not to mention that she seems to be closer to Charlie's age than Wilson is, so probably they spent some time playing together as kids (and probably back then Winona was the one winning the fight game). Wilson is more of a couch potato and according to the official timeline he is some years younger than Charlie and Winona. In case we take the theory "Wilson is Charlie's brother" in account, it means Wilson could not play with his older sisters like they used to do when they were younger and this causes him to be unable to dodge Charlie's attacks even if now he knows who is attacking him.
Another interesting possible clue is the new sentence Wilson says in DST when he is attacked by Charlie: "That presence... it's familiar! Hello?". Sure, he finally met her so he can recognize her presence... but the choice of words bears some uncanny resemblance to another quote from another character: "Hm? What a familiar presence." But maybe it's just another coincidence that this is almost the inversion of the words order of the sentence of a certain uncle recognizing the flower of his dead niece. Or I'm so into this theory that I'm seeing clues everywhere.
And for some more bonus point, look at Maxwell and Wendy in game: unless you know Don't Starve lore all you could say about them after looking at their designs and reading their quotes is "are these two guys in the same Shakespeare emo fanclub?" Their quotes have a similar dramatic tone, but there is almost nothing that suggests an actual family relationship between them. They don't even look anything alike!
4) The identity of the person Winona was trying to save
We were told from the beginning that Winona went into the Constant on her own because she wanted to save someone. We were also informed that she is Charlie's sister and she used to work for the Voxola Radio Company, so Charlie and Robert Wagstaff seem to be the only possible options as the person she was trying to save. Or aren't they?
As for Charlie, she disappeared in 1906 during a huge disaster that caused a lot of victims (the event overlaps with San Francisco's earthquake in 1906), and Winona came into the Constant fifteen years later. Probably on Earth Charlie was presumed dead and Winona went with it, as her quote of the Tragedy Marble Statue suggests ("We thought she was gone"). She grieved her but then she went on with her life. In 1919 she started to work for Wagstaff's Voxola until it burned down. However, unusually for a character who is supposed to be canonically playable only in the multiplayer version of the game, Winona has Adventure Mode related quotes that even got modified at some point. According to her original Adventure Mode quotes we can understand that she was actually shocked to find out that Maxwell's plots were behind Voxola's fire and Wagstaff's disappearance. Then Robert Wagstaff might not be the person Winona was looking for. Two years or more pass by and Winona joins the fun in the Constant, yet she never mentions her looking for someone, meaning that she already found the one person she was looking for. If this person is not Charlie or Wagstaff, who could they be? Wilson not only could be a valid answer, but if she knew where he lived and she found the Maxwell's Door inside his house she even had the mean to reach the Constant with no help at all!
But if they are estranged how did she know Wilson went missing? Well, some newspapers or radio transmissions might have announced his sudden disappearance, or the police went look for Winona because she might be the only family he has left. And the news did not leave her indifferent, so she went to his place looking for clues and found out about the Maxwell's Door. And for some bonus points, if Wilson left some notes behind (and he probably did as he used the typewriter when he was creating the portal during the cinematic!) she might have recognized something Charlie could have told her about fifteen years before that convinced her that Wilson was in trouble. So she activated the door. We know how it went.

let’s crack open everyone’s character examine strings
eta: okay, think i caught everything
several of other people’s lines for winona feel really.. unpolished, to me. i haven’t seen any that were straight lifted from the generic ‘player’ lines but i wouldn’t be surprised if they’ll eventually be tightened up? or maybe my expectations are too high
WILSON
GENERIC = "Hey [Wilson]! How ya doin'?" ATTACKER = "Hands to yourself, bucko!" MURDERER = "Mad scientist! Get'em!" REVIVER = "You're good people, scientist." GHOST = "Stop whinin', [Wilson], it's just a scratch!" FIRESTARTER = "You better not have singed any of my projects, scientist."
elsewhere winona refers to wilson as ‘that egghead’ but it doesn’t read with particular malice to me
GENERIC = "Good day to you, [Winona]!" ATTACKER = "[Winona] is a safety hazard." MURDERER = "It ends here, [Winona]!" REVIVER = "It's pretty handy having you around, [Winona]." GHOST = "That probably threw a wrench into her plans." FIRESTARTER = "Things are burning up at the factory today.”
whee, puns
also, welcome to the first of many references to factory fires
WOLFGANG
GENERIC = "How you doin', big guy?" ATTACKER = "I wouldn't wanna catch the business end of those mitts!" MURDERER = "Watch out! He's got a taste fer blood now!" REVIVER = "You're just a big softie, aintcha?" GHOST = "Walk it off, big guy!" FIRESTARTER = "Was that fire an accident, [Wolfgang]?"
‘walk it off’ He’s Dead Winona
GENERIC = "Is fixing lady, [Winona]! Hello!" ATTACKER = “[Winona] is breaking things!" MURDERER = “[Winona] broke our friend!" REVIVER = "[Winona] is kind lady." GHOST = "Wolfgang will fix [Winona] with heart." FIRESTARTER = "[Winona]'s fires is make Wolfgang nervous."
MAXWELL
GENERIC = "So... [Maxwell]." ATTACKER = "Don't make me noogie you, [Maxwell]." MURDERER = "How many lives you plannin' on ruinin', [Maxwell]?" REVIVER = "Nice job, ya big walnut." GHOST = "I could just leave you like this, hey?" FIRESTARTER = "Mysterious fires follow you like a plague, [Maxwell]."
not especially fond of maxwell.
RED_CAP = "Let Max try it first." MAXWELL = "Well, you're a tall piece of work." MAXWELLHEAD = "You don't scare me." SHADOWDIGGER = "Too lazy to do your own chores, Max?" BEEMINE_MAXWELL = "That guy's got no concern for others. Pfft." TWIGGY_OLD = "Looks like that two-bit magician."
STATUEMAXWELL = "So THIS is "Maxy"."
‘maxy’ is how charlie referred to him, in the william carter puzzles
GENERIC = "Greetings, Ms. [Winona].”, ATTACKER = "[Winona] has been roughhousing like a commoner.", MURDERER = "You've engineered your own demise!", REVIVER = "[Winona] expertly uses all tools at her disposal.", GHOST = "My, you're looking spirited today, [Winona].", FIRESTARTER = "It's not wise to start factory fires, [Winona]."
considering what she insinuates about you, it may not be wise to taunt her about factory fires, max!
WX78
GENERIC = "C'mon, [WX-78]! Justa [sic] tiny peek under the hood!" ATTACKER = "Yeesh. They're on the fritz again." MURDERER = "I'll reset you to factory standards, bot." REVIVER = "Ha! The bucket'o'bolts has feelings after all!" GHOST = "Incredible! You gotta tell me how that works, [WX-78]!" FIRESTARTER = "Your logic lets you set fires, [WX-78]? Why?”
(coughs, points at wx’s canon pronouns) anyway i love this interaction
TRINKET_11 [Lying Robot] = "Maybe this bot'll let me poke around its insides." BLOWDART_YELLOW = "I'm gonna shoot this at the bot's butt.”
GENERIC = "DETECTING... [WINONA]!" ATTACKER = "THAT [WINONA] IS A DISASSEMBLY WORKER" MURDERER = "NO CONSTRUCTION. ONLY DESTRUCTION" REVIVER = " [WINONA] IS A VALUABLE MINION" GHOST = "HOW WILL YOU FIX THIS, [WINONA]?" FIRESTARTER = "HAHA. THIS ORGANIC HAS BEEN BURNING THINGS"
WILLOW
GENERIC = "Good ta see ya, [Willow]!" ATTACKER = "Yer a workplace hazard, [Willow]." MURDERER = "She's mad! Get'er!" REVIVER = "Knew I could count on you, [Willow]." GHOST = "Ha! You're a disaster, [Willow]." FIRESTARTER = "Business as usual."
BERNIE_INACTIVE = BROKEN = "He's a bit of a fixer-upper." GENERIC = "This little guy's been well loved." BERNIE_ACTIVE = "Is he clockwork? Can I peek inside?"
LIGHTER  = "Neat little gizmo there."
GENERIC = "Hi [Winona]!" ATTACKER = "Too rough, [Winona]! Jeez!" MURDERER = "Murderer! Now you burn!" REVIVER = "[Winona] never gives up on anyone." GHOST = "A heart sure would come in handy!"  FIRESTARTER = "Nice fire, [Winona] !"
WENDY
GENERIC = "Hey there, [Wendy]." ATTACKER = "Woah there, slugger!" MURDERER = "She's not playin'! Murderer!" REVIVER = "You got a sharp mind in that noggin, [Wendy]." GHOST = "I hope you left the other guy lookin' worse." FIRESTARTER = "Anythin' you wanna tell me about that fire, kiddo?"
yall should know this by now but the fastest way to my heart for a DS character is to be cute with the kids
ABIGAIL = "How are you, boo?" ABIGAILHEART = "No one should ever lose a sister."
DDD:
GENERIC = "How do you do, [Winona]?" ATTACKER = "There is anger in [Winona]'s heart." MURDERER = "Abigail and I are going to have fun with you!" REVIVER = "Hi [Winona]. Abigail says "thank-you"." GHOST = "You can't escape that way, [Winona]. I've tried." FIRESTARTER = "Is fire important in your line of work...?"
meanwhile: terrifying as usual
WOODIE
GENERIC = "You down ta chop some trees for me later, [Woodie]?" ATTACKER = "Watch where you're swingin' that thing, [Woodie]!" MURDERER = "Yikes! Axe murderer!" REVIVER = "You're a good, honest guy, [Woodie]." GHOST = "You're fine, [Woodie], I've seen worse." BEAVER = "Well ain't that somethin'." BEAVERGHOST = "You're just a walkin' disaster, ain'tcha, [Woodie]?" FIRESTARTER = "You're gonna start a forest fire, [Woodie]!"
“i’ve seen worse” h e ‘ s  d e a d  w i n o n a
LUCY = "You're alright for an axe."
for an axe...
GENERIC = "[Winona]! Hey there bud!" ATTACKER = "[Winona] is getting too big for her britches." MURDERER = "You're on the chopping block now, [Winona]!" REVIVER = "I knew we were gonna get along." GHOST = "Yer looking a little pale, [Winona]." FIRESTARTER = “[Winona] betrays the forest!"
WICKERBOTTOM
GENERIC = "How's life treatin' ya, grams?" ATTACKER = "Yeesh, that ol' librarian packs a punch!" MURDERER = "Watch out! Grams is on a rampage!" REVIVER = "Don't worry grams, I won't read too much into it. Ha!" GHOST = "You're a tough one, [Wickerbottom], I'll give ya that." FIRESTARTER = "A fire? Here I thought you were responsible, grams."
grams..................
BOOK_BIRDS = "I was never much of a book learner." BOOK_TENTACLES = "I'm not really a "book smarts" kind of gal." BOOK_GARDENING = "I prefer to learn from experience." BOOK_SLEEP = "I already know how to sleep, thanks." BOOK_BRIMSTONE = "I prefer hands-on learning."
GENERIC = "Ah, greetings dear [Winona]!", ATTACKER = "Rather crass wouldn't you say, [Winona]?" MURDERER = "I'll not tolerate such behaviour!" REVIVER = "[Winona] is quite the Jane of all trades." GHOST = "Tsk. Were you wearing your hardhat, dear?" FIRESTARTER = "That was certainly not a regulation fire, dear."
tiny, tiny nitpick: ‘behaviour’ is the british/commonwealth spelling. i have no idea if it was on purpose - elsewhere she uses ‘color’, etc
also there’s no hardhat item, but they sure do keep referencing it around her.
WES
GENERIC = "Don't worry [Wes], I can talk enough for two. Ha!" ATTACKER = "Didn't know ya had it in ya, [Wes]!" MURDERER = "Killer mime! I'll have nightmares tonight!" REVIVER = "Thanks for the assist, [Wes]." GHOST = "Let's getcha back on your feet, [Wes]." FIRESTARTER = "You responsible for that fire there, [Wes]?"
killer.. mime....
BALLOONS_EMPTY = "No fun without Wes."
WEBBER
GENERIC = "How's life treating ya, kiddo?" ATTACKER = "Yeesh, kid, dial it back!" MURDERER = "Killer spider! Get it!" REVIVER = "You did good, kid." GHOST = "You'll be fine, kid, yer a boxer." FIRESTARTER = "Alright, [Webber]. Why'd ya set the fire?"
WEBBERSKULL = "I swear the kid'd lose his head if it weren't... wait."
again, really cute EXCEPT FOR ‘KILLER SPIDER’ WHICH KILLS THIS LIZ....
in general she doesn’t like spiders :< i don’t expect her to, they’re trying to eat her face, but it makes me sad anyway
GENERIC = "Hi [Winona]! Build anything neat today?" ATTACKER = "Don't do hits, [Winona]!" MURDERER = "We didn't wanna have to do this!" REVIVER = "[Winona] keeps us all together!" GHOST = "Aw, I'm sorry that happened to you, [Winona]." FIRESTARTER = "Don't light fires, [Winona]!"
such a sweet kid
WIGFRID
GENERIC = "Hey, [Wigfrid]! Arm wrestle rematch later?" ATTACKER = "Woah! Watch that right hook, [Wigfrid]!" MURDERER = "Takin' the warrior thing too far, [Wigfrid]!" REVIVER = "That was good work there, [Wigfrid]." GHOST = "Well that just won't do at all!" FIRESTARTER = "Quit startin' fires, [Wigfrid]!”
SPEAR_WATHGRITHR = "This would never pass inspection." WATHGRITHRHAT = "Surprisingly practical."
GENERIC = "Greetings, brave [Winona]!" ATTACKER = "Dost thou test me, [Winona]?" MURDERER = "I shall unleash Ragnarok upon thee!" REVIVER = "[Winona] is guided by Brokkr." GHOST = "[Winona] hath fallen in battle! A heart!" FIRESTARTER = "[Winona]'s flames could temper steel."
stealing from wikipedia: “In Norse mythology, Brokkr (Old Norse "the one who works with metal fragments; blacksmith",[1] anglicized Brokk) is a dwarf...”
to paraphrase the wiki, apologies if this is inaccurate, but brokkr bet against loki that his family could build more beautiful things than the dwarves loki favored, and he worked the bellows while his brother made several artifacts including Mjollnir, even when loki took the forms of various biting insects to try n distract him. and won the bet
WINONA
GENERIC = "That's a good lookin' gal!" ATTACKER = "Ooo, I'm gonna disassemble you." MURDERER = "Pfft! I'd never murder so openly!" REVIVER = "I owe ya one, [Winona]." GHOST = "That is not a good look on you, [Winona]." FIRESTARTER = "Haven't we lost enough to fires, [Winona]?"
Tumblr media
CHARLIE
ASSUMING THAT winona is indeed charlie’s sister. it seems likely to me. if absolutely nothing else, they know each other well.
ANNOUNCE_CHARLIE = "C-Charlie?", ANNOUNCE_CHARLIE_MISSED = "Ha! I know all your moves!", --Winona gets one free hit from Charlie ANNOUNCE_CHARLIE_ATTACK = "Yeow! Rude!" ROSE = "Not sure how to feel about that..."
marble ‘muse’ statues: TYPE2 = "We thought she was gone..." TYPE1 = "This is too strange."
MANDRAKE_ACTIVE = "This is exactly what having a little sister's like."
ABIGAILHEART = "No one should ever lose a sister."
(campfire/endothermic fire) OUT = "My sister was afraid of the dark."
WILDLY DISTRESSING
