Hello Anon! I absolutely have a few recs for you! I hope you don't mind venturing out of the Thai BL realm for a bit. These 3 are actually some of my faves. Top 10.

To My Star. TMS is a Korean BL. It's centered around famous actor Kang Seo Joon and local chef Han Ji Woo. Seo Joon gets caught in the middle of a scandal and has to lay low so his manager makes him move in with Ji Woo who coincidentally lives in the apartment building he owns and rents out. Seo Joon is very charismatic and outspoken and Ji Woo is very reserved and set in his ways. As they live together and work together, they get closer and closer to each other. There are 2 seasons of To My Star and s2 shows a lot more of Seo Joon's celebrity presence because he's not hiding out and waiting for the scandal to pass anymore. You can watch it on VIKI.

Utsukushii Kare aka My Beautiful Man. Utsukushii Kare is a Japanese BL. It doesn't quite start off as Celebrity x Regular Guy but it becomes that. Hira is a quiet anti-social guy who doesn't really have much interest in anything at all until he sees Kiyoi who is the most beautiful person he's ever seen in his life. Kiyoi is the school's most popular guy, people hang around him to gain something and he's fine with it because he likes the attention. Kiyoi has aspirations of being famous. He eventually becomes a model and then an actor while Hira goes to Uni. Kiyoi gets his big break as an actor and Hira is right by his side. The problem is Hira doesn't think enough of himself and Kiyoi thinks the entire world of him. There are 2 seasons and a movie for Utsukushii Kare. It's available on VIKI and Gagaoolala.

Lovely Writer. This one is a Thai BL. This series is about a up and coming, but low profile fantasy author Gene who got his start by writing a BL novel. That novel is being turned into a BL series. Enter our other main Nubsib who will be starring in the drama. They ask Gene to be on site while filming to offer character insight but he wants no parts of it and really is against his novel even being made into a series. He's not proud of his tropey and toxic novel. Anyways, Nubsib shows immediate interest in Gene who just wants to remain unseen and unheard. Nubsib wants to be everywhere Gene is. He's super taken with him and he thinks he's super cute and maybe he knows Gene better than he's letting on. They must juggle their growing feelings while also dealing with the media, Gene writing his new BL novel, and super fans who ship Nubsib with his onscreen partner Aoey.

In the need for a lovely meta deep dive.

Lovely Writer, it is. (Its a long one, sorry not sorry)

Gene and Nubsib are great but this show as a whole is an amazing pointed look at the problematic layers in the BL world and how different parties contribute to it.

Addressing the lack of consent, the use of coercion, and overall toxic masculine machismo used as a vehicle to get to NSFW scenes. It is refreshing that we see the managers who are notorious for being predatory in these shows actually be supportive and have dimension to their characters. And big ups to Nubsib for refusing to hook up with a drunk Gene.

As a demisexual, I appreciate the conversations around the egregious and gratuitous use of sex to cover for bad scripts and the trend of ignoring the plot for the sake of sex.

The fans' unhinged entitlement and commodification of an actor, the dehumanization and puppetry in fan service, and the hostile industry's romanticism of SA. Possessive parasocial relationships.

The show also does a great job of addressing the subversive caricature assumptions and stereotypes regarding the LGBT+ community within the script and in the shows IRL. The callouts to the hypocrisy and those disrespectful views towards the gay community while also marketing said gayness to straight women. Also, the pressure to come out or stay in the closet is based on how the news can be again commodified.

Oh the coming out scenes in the second half of the show had me clenching everything. It was very tense and you see the subtle hypocrisy in the parents who never consider the possibility of their children being anything but straight.

Homophobia vs Fear of Retaliation: Even though Gene's dad was in love with a man once, he is still not immediately accepting of his son's sexuality. I was cheering for the gumption and boldness when Gene's brother threw that back at his father and reminded him that he was bisexual. It was nice that the father was more supportive and opened up about the fact that his opposition came from fear of his son going through similar trials and pain. Its a nice change from the usual trope of a shitty and homophobic father and open minded.

The continued digs at optics and performativity. Acting, couples, products, fan service, stereotypes, gender norms, media, etc etc.

At its core we have Gene and Nubsib who are dealing with different aspects of all of these issues and the rapid nature of the media, from opposite sides of the lens. We see this a great deal in the Press Conference episode or as I call it, Ghost Ship v Show Ship.

The unreliable narrative across the board is done in a very tongue and cheek way which I appreciate. Even until the end, it's not even hiding what it's doing. Gene was literally the creator of this show that the fans supposedly loved but they were quick to hate him simply for being the person Nubsib actually want to be with.

Though, Aoey irks me and needs more therapy then there are days in the century. I did appreciate the continued dig at the obsessive nature of the fans and how we see that contribute to Aoey's declining mental state . But I refuse to feel more than the requisite level of sympathy for this bottle of chaos especially after the waterworks show on a Live he did to capitalize on the hate being thrown at Gene. Aoey is what I would describe as a wrecking ball. Not malicious, but destructive all the same. He doesn't spend much time thinking about the consequences of his actions and only focuses on the possibility for attention and love which he craves to the point of obsession. (Like I said, so much therapy). But the show illustrates that flawlessly and shows him alone at the end due to his actions, full of fame but it's hollow. Mhok was right there but some people craft these self-fulfilling prophecies and force the other shoe to drop instead of accepting love. I'm glad that the show allows Mhok to move on.

Especially at the end where we see Gene and Nubsib forced to lie about their relationship which predates their fame or the show because of how strangers on the internet feel, how it affects the show (within the show) actual ship, and the genuine obsession with the "ghost ship". Toxic behavior all around hurts everyone for the sake of coin. Nubsib was ready to just give up his career if it meant he could be with the one he loved but Gene, ever the practical one, wasn't willing to allow him to destroy his job. But they thankfully addressed that the temporary nature of putting out media fires was never ending because of the toxic expectations the industry and the fans had.

In short, Lovely Writer did an amazing job of addressing so many of the overarching issues that plague the industry by being a show within a show, a story within a story, and showing the facets of both. And the last scene was a great tie-in, continuing to hint that none and all of it was real at the same time.

I am all for appreciating and loving the acting in a show but I wish more people understood that the people doing the acting are not the characters. And I am not owed their time outside of that. And this show as well as the War of Y are doing good work by continuing to point out the trappings and pitfalls beneath the glitz, sheet masks, snack placements, and all the pretty people.

Playing Mind Games

Hey friends; it's 2:30 AM and I come to you with a new trope character list. Master Manipulative Mains. These men have orchestrated tactics and falsified scenarios to land themselves the men that they want.

This is a trope that I don't necessarily dislike because I do like these characters and the overall relationship dynamics are some of my faves. I'm not saying these characters are bad boyfriends, but the way they went about getting these boyfriends were a bit questionable.

If I was on the receiving end these mind games I would be throwing hands immediately. Anyway, enjoy this list of my fave Manipulative BL Protagonists.

Payu from Love in the Air

I love Payu, I really do, but the man preyed on Rain's ignorance of car maintenance and tampered with the boy's car because he knew Rain would turn to him for help, he was counting on it. He wanted Rain to owe him so he could take advantage of a non-existent debt he created. Like sir. You could've just asked him out, you saw the way he was ogling you at that dinner party. Then he made Rain jump through hoops to prove he was good enough for him and didn't tell him about the car tampering until after they were well established.

Nubsib from Lovely Writer

Nubsib auditioned for a series his longtime crush, Gene, was the source writer for in the hopes of running into this man again. And then took advantage of his manager's friendship with that same writer and had him lie so that he could live with Gene. He tricked Gene into running lines with him so he could kiss him and had no intention of telling him that they were childhood friends. He just decided to wait until Gene found out on his own. He said he didn't want Gene to look at him like a younger brother so that's why he didn't reveal his true identity. Yea no, that's not how this works.

Gao Shi De from We Best Love: No. 1 for You

In order to be a memorable presence in his long time crush's life, Shi De had taken it upon himself to become Shu Yi's sole rival from grade school through college. He one-upped his unsuspecting crush in sports, competitions, and academics. He also conned Shu Yi into being his errand boy so they could spend time together. And then when they finally got closer he convinced his cousin who just so happened to be the Uni's doctor to let him use his infirmary to set up a lock-in Halloween sleepover with Shu Yi. The manipulation Olympics Shi De put himself through was unmatched.

Theo from Enchante

This man deserves an award for the manipulation tactics he went through to get Akk to confess to him first. He created a whole secret admirer to try to make Akk jealous and admit he liked him. Then he accidentally got the Uni's 4 most popular students to pretend they were his Enchante which further fueled his convoluted plan. Like he knew they weren't his admirer but he said nothing, I think it's because he could tell that Akk was jealous which was what he wanted. And then when the truth was finally revealed Akk just accepted it?? I guess he was just happy to find out Theo liked him. Couldn't be me.

Kim Jun Ho from Kissable Lips

This vampire planned to use his supernatural charm to make an innocent Choi Min Hyun fall in love with him so he could drink all his blood and become human. He literally took advantage of every moment they had together to try to drink his blood. Jokes on him, his ass fell in love. SMH.

Honorable mentions to Nuea from Secret Crush on You, because that man was very aware of Toh's crush on him and managed to convince Toh he was gonna teach him how to kiss but really he just wanted to smooch his little stalker because he liked him too. Not to mention that man stripped in front of Toh every chance he got, but honestly Toh was so into it that I can't even be mad.

Beautiful

Despite being together for years, he still didn't understand what Nubsib saw in him.

Gene wasn't what people would call beautiful or handsome, with luck he would be told that he looks average.

So he didn't understand why Nubsib always called him the most beautiful person he had ever met.

No matter how much Gene tried to find what Nubsib found beautiful himself, he just couldn't.

Maybe it came from the years he spent all alone and how no one seemed interested in him which affected his self-esteem but Gene just didn't consider himself good looking.

But Nubsib seemed to have a sixth sense to know when Gene was thinking about this as he would force Gene to be in front of the mirror in just underwear as he told him every little thing he loved and considered beautiful on him.

Gene may never believe he was beautiful but Nubsib would always make him feel loved and feel beautiful in those moments and that was enough for Gene.
