I've been thinking about what car I'd want to build next once the #Nozarashi86 is done, and I keep toying with this idea of building a full-blown IMSA Toyota TRD tribute build: a white ZN6 with the @thespeedhunters KM4SH wide body kit, @wedswheels RM05Ns nice and beefy, and with an all-out @hks_usa_inc / @hks_japan 2.1L stroker build with their new turbo system to fully honor Dan Gurney's 2.1L boosted Celica motor used for this GTO racecar. I'd also use the rest of HKS's catalogue along with their suspension etc. While this has sort of been done already for a SEMA build, it'd be fun to do one that is very performance driven, but still comfortable on the street for the driver & passenger. And more importantly, she'd be all mine to enjoy, being a nice contrast to my #NaturallyAspirated ZN6. It will be 50 years since the original Holden Monaro was released come this Sunday.

To honour the occasion we’ve decided to declare Sunday National Monaro Day and we’ll be sharing memories of what is arguably Australia most iconic car.

As a young teenager I remember going to one of our town’s Holden dealers on a weekday evening just after their allocations of Monaros had arrived.

The showroom was crowded with people.

Salesmen, and they were all men back then, strutted around with obvious pride.

“I can’t believe this is a Holden,” was a commonly heard statement as people wandered among the cars in the showroom.

Early design idea for the HK Monaro

What potential buyers saw was not really a car, but the promise of a lifestyle and personal statement that very few Australians had ever dreamed was within their financial reach.

Not anymore.

Right in front of them was a roomy, drop-dead stylish, two-door hardtop coupe which had all the glamour and sex appeal of an imported Pontiac GTO, E-Type Jaguar or Chevrolet Camaro — at one quarter of the price (or $35 more than a Cortina GT).

The TV advertisement rammed the message home that “life was suddenly very Monaro”.

The advertisement depicted the car’s intended target market: a young family, an affluent-looking well dressed woman out shopping and a youngish guy with his girlfriend in a V8 GTS.

Right at the end of advertisement the price was revealed: Just $2575. “You can afford one” the voiceover guy said. Great style at a modest price! Australia’s first sports machine!

And just four months later it won at Bathurst, and scored the 1968 Wheels Car of the year Award.

Another early Monaro design

What the public did not know was that the Monaro’s development was never guaranteed. Our small market made a low volume coupe a marginal business case at best.

Back in late 1963 Holden stylists Alf Payze and David Veltman, created renderings of a HD and HR coupe and convertible, if only to see what they would look like.

Things got more serious when work in the 1968 HK ranged commence in January 1964.

An American, Ed Taylor, was given initial responsibility for leading the HK program.

The first proposal for the HK coupe (it had no name in 1964/65) was essentially a smaller version of the Chevrolet Impala coupe.

Taylor returned to the USA in July 1965 and was replaced by John Schinella. At 26 John was already on the fast track in GM design.

It was Schinella who moved the entire HK program toward what became the final design.

His philosophy was to borrow surface design ideas from all of GM’s future and current designs and blend them into the HK range where they made the most visual impact.

For the coupe styling he encouraged the design team to adopt the smooth flowing roof line and “monocoque” rear quarter panel similar to the Oldsmobile Toronado and upcoming (1968) Pontiac GTO.

It was an inspired idea because it meant when the Monaro was released it would be totally aligned with two of GM’s “hero” cars, which was no bad thing.

Yet all through the development process, the bean counters were questioning if it would make any money.

An advertisement for the HK Monaro

John Schinella, recalls that “the original idea was that the Monaro was planned to only match the Falcon GT, and offer a small number of GTS-style models. But the range was broadened to include the basic models in order to make the business case. We also had to share the front end design with the sedans in order to make the coupe cost effective.”

It is now Australian automotive legend that the coupe was given its Monaro name at the suggestion of interior designer Noel Bradford.

The GTS label is attributed to Schinella.

過激なターボより操る楽しさ!! 湾岸チューナの作ったハイレスポンスNA仕様スモーキー永田の遊びグルマ！ 1970年(昭和45年)にデビューしたのがギャランGTO。その形状から「ヒップアップクーペ」というキャッチコピーで人気の高かったクルマだ。デビュー時のトップグレードは1600ccのツインカム、ソレックス4連キャブのMR、当時としてはトップレベルの俊足ぶりを発揮した。その後、排ガス規制が導入されたことによる出力低下を補う目的や、競合車種とのパワー競争もあって、1973年のマイナーチェンジで2000ccエンジンを搭載するモデルが追加される。 2000ccモデルのトップグレード、GS-Rはビス止めのオーバーフェンダーを装備、いち早く扁平タイヤが導入されるなど“走り屋”イメージの強いクルマとなっていった。この車両はそんな2000ccのGS-Rをベースとしたチューニングカーだ。ベース車が解体寸前のところでトップシークレット代表のスモーキー永田の目にとまり、チューニングを受けることに。心臓部には、ランサーエボリューションの4G63はGT-R用ピストンなどでハイコンプ化し、4連スロットルやエキマニをワンオフ装着、気持ちよく走れる程度のファインチューンがなされて搭載されている。エンジンスワップといっても、もともと搭載されていたエンジンも4G53という同設計エンジンのため、搭載にあたってはオイルパンの形状加工など最低限の作業で進めることができたそうだ。こうして完成した車両は、エアコンも装備され、乗り味は当時のまま街乗りから高速クルージングまで快適にこなせるもの。普段はショップ内に保管され、代表のスモーキー永田が気分転換したい時などに使っているとのことだ。このクルマに乗ると、クルマのことばかり考えていた少年時代のことを思い出し、初心に戻ることができるそうだ。 PHOTO：Katsuyoshi Kobayashi 搭載されているエンジンはランサーエボリューションIのもの。スロットルはワンオフのインマニにGT-R用の多連スロットルを加工して装着。GT-R用ピストンで圧縮比を調整し、ハイコンプ仕様に仕上げられている。エキマニもトップシークレットでワンオフされたもの。HKSのハイカムを使い高回転までハイレスポンスなエンジンに仕上げられている。同系統のエンジンのため、搭載に大きな苦労はなかったといいながらも、オイルパンはGTO用とランエボ用を2コイチ加工。ほぼノーマルのインテリアだが、センターコンソールにはF-CONプロがさりげなく埋め込まれる。プロジェクトμの他車種用ストロークアップアッパーマウントを使って、ストロークアップされたサスペンション。ノーマルのシェルケースにダウンサスと強化ショックアブソーバーが組みこまれている。装着されているオーバーフェンダーはじつは純正。道路交通法の改正によりGS-R発売当初のモデルにしか装備されなかったものだ。装着されているホイールはRSワタナベのRS-8。（web option編集部）あわせて読みたい * 【東京BURNOUT図鑑〜白煙とともに名所を巡る〜】AKB劇場［東京都千代田区］×クレスタ［GX100］ * レクサスRC FはチューニングでGT-Rを超えられるのか？ツインスーパーチャージャー化で800psのRC F * 【WEB OPTION流「ふるさと納税」利用術 -番外編-】お礼品にワタナベ8スポークがある!? 読者様から有益な情報をゲット！ * 【菅原政広×シルビア 2016spec】冬のリメイク期間に年々進化するS13激低モンスタ * 【直撃!! 噂の真走】愛知県知事が自動車税の廃止に向けて立ち上がった!? http://dlvr.it/QsJ3ql

当時の国内最速記録を更新したなにわの男、「トライアル・牧原道夫」のチューニング人生とは【OPTION　1985年4月号より】

光永パンテーラが、国内初300km/hオーバーとなる307.69km/hを記録したのが1981年11月。その後2年以上の時を経て、ようやく国産車初300km/hオーバー、301.25km/hがHKSセリカXX・M300にて記録されました（1983年12月）。それから1年後、1984年12～1985年1月にかけRSヤマモトZ（300.75km/h）、トラスト・大川ソアラ（300.50km/h）、RE雨宮RX-7（307.42km/h）により続々と国産車による300km/hオーバーが記録されました。言葉通り「続々と」記録された中、それまでの最高記録を出し一気に最高速ランキング1位をゲットしたのが、前々回にプレイバックした「トライアルZ」の307.95km/h（1984年12月）です。ではここで、その最速記録更新を果たしたトライアル代表・牧原道夫の「人」をクローズアップした記事をプレイバックしてみましょう！・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・新・必殺改造人　トライアル社長　牧原道夫昭和29年1月生まれ　血液型A　鹿児島県出身「大阪、義理、人情」トライアルのS130Zがチューンドカー最高速の新記録307.95km/hを出した。これはあの光永パンテーラを凌ぐ快挙だ。関係者は当然、クルマに注目した。エンジンは？　タービンは？　足まわりは？･･･と。しかし、一番気になったのは、いったいどんな人がそのクルマを作ったのか、なぜ人よりも速いクルマを作る気になったのかということ。はっきりいって、最高速を出すことが即、商売に結び付くとは思えない。それなのにどうしてチャレンジし、レコードを出したのか、ということだ。スピードには言葉で表現できん何かがある東大阪にあるトライアルに足を運んだ、「ああ、どうも」と少し高い声で挨拶してくれた牧原さんは、真っ赤なツナギを着て両手をポケットに入れている。イメージはちばてつやのコミックに出てくる鉄兵、もしくは国松クンといった感じだが、彼の目はネコ科のそれと同じくらい鋭い。 OPT：いつ頃からチューニングするようになったのですか。牧原：いつやったかな、もう忘れてもうたで、そうやな、アルバイトの頃入れてもう12年くらいになるかな（85年当時）。実の兄がカーショップ・チャレンジのオーナーでな、そこでアルバイトしよった。18歳で免許取ってすぐやったな。 OPT：最初のクルマはなんでしたか？牧原：免許は一発試験のほうやった。3回目で受かった。初めに買うたんはRX-3、当時はサバンナがムチャクチャ流行っとったからね。新車で確か79万円やったと思うわ。まだ10Aしかない時でGS-Ⅱというヤツやった。それ買うて、真っ赤なヤツをすぐドアミラーにしてレーシングタイヤ履かせとったな。フロントもリヤもスポイラー付けとった。 OPT：当時それだけやってたら結構、目立ってたんじゃないですか。牧原：目立った。S30よりもカッコイイ言われた時もあった。しかしオレの周りはみんなそんなヤツらばっかやったからな。ノーマルなんかで乗っとったらその方がかえって目立っとった。まだ暴走族ゆう言葉もなかったけど、よう7～8台で走り回っとったわ。今でいう走り屋ともちょっと違うとったな。 OPT：族でも走り屋でもないというと、何だったんでしょうね。牧原：どっちも違うな。とにかく走り回っちゃあみんなでダベっとった。それもクルマと女の話だけな。そのまま今でも気持ちは年取ってないつもりやけどな(笑)。 OPT：RX-3の後はどんなクルマに乗られてたんですか？牧原：ようけい乗ったな。RX-3の後はZだけで5台は乗っとるし、トヨタ、三菱、三菱はGTOとかセレステも乗ったな。外車はシロッコぐらいやな。とにかく数多く乗った。RX-3は3ヵ月で飽きた。なんでやろ。 OPT：それだけ乗ると、いろんなクルマの特徴みたいなものが分かったでしょうね。牧原：結果的にクルマよりもメーカーの特性みたいなものが分かったな。メーカーごとに何考えとんのかを知ることができた。これは今でも役立っとんで。 OPT：そのころからやっぱりスピードには興味があった･･･のは当然ですよね。牧原：スピードには魅せられとったな。言葉で表現できん何かがあるやろう、スピードには。あの頃はムチャクチャしよったな。外で走り回って家に帰ってから布団の中で思い出すと、恐怖でガタガタ震えたことがようあった。今考えても恐ろしいわ。 OPT：さて、いよいよ307.95km/hの話なんですが、技術的な面からお話してもらえますか？牧原：ツインターボ＋キャブゆうんはあれがデビュー作やったんや。理論上ではシングルでタービンを大きくするよりも、ツインにしたほうがより多くの混合気を送れるのは分かっとった。でも手元にあるのはシングルターボのセッティングデータだけやろ、ゆうてみればテストケースになるわけや。でもデビュー作やから全力を注いで作った。どこが違うかいわれたら、予想できるトラブルは全て読んですぐに対処できるように、いやその前にトラブらんようにひとつひとつのパーツをシビアに見ていったな。 OPT：トラブルに関してはまぁ、どこのショップさんもそうみたいですね。牧原：ウチトコはそれ以上にシビアに見たんや。なんでか分かる？　谷田部でなにかあったらウチはそれで終いや。ちょっと持って帰ってすぐ直すゆうわけにはいかんやろ。大阪と東京ゆう距離がそうさせたんや。そやからコースに入って1周目、第1バンクにクルマが消えたら第2バンクから出てくるまではハラハラしっ放しや。まるでデキの悪い子を見とんのと一緒や。燃え尽きて、燃え尽きて、真白くなりたい OPT：なるほど。では一番聞きたいこと、なぜ最高速を狙ったのか聞かせてください。牧原：う～ん。まず、今やから、やってみよう思うた。これを2年後に出しても意味のないもんや思う。時代が変わっとるやろうからね。逆にあと何年かすれば、あぁ85年は307km/h出た年やったなぁゆうことになる思うわ。その時には皆レベルアップしとるやろうしな。技術の差ゆうんは見えんもんや。それと、目標があった。チューンドカーのトップでありたい。これは逆にウチとこのクルマがいつ抜かれるか分からんゆうことや。 OPT：同じZということでRSヤマモトさんのクルマはやっぱり意識されたんですか？牧原：ヤマモトさんところはストリート仕様を強調してはるやろ。ウチとこと同じやしな。ウチもあくまでもストリート仕様で、ゆう気持ちがあったから、そりゃ意識するわ。彼んとこは298km/hも出してたしな。でもいってみればヤマモトZはツインターボL型の1号車やろ。ウチんとこは2号車。1号より2号のほうが速うないと意味ないんや。男ならやってみよ思うわ。 OPT：今の気持ちはやっぱり最高ですか？牧原：記録は破られるためにあるんやろうから、受け身の今はあんまり面白うない。トップであるゆうことは、いつかトップでなくなるかもしれんゆうことや。 OPT：じゃあ今の記録はいつまで持っていられると考えてますか？牧原：ヤなこと聞くなぁ。市販車ベースやったら315～316km/hが限界やろな。いくら足まわりやるゆうても市販車ベースやったら限界ゆうもんがあるし。そやけど、ただエンジンだけやってもダメや。足まわりや空力はもちろんやけど、結局アクセル踏むんはテストドライバーやろ。これからはエンジン、足まわり、ボディ、プラス、ドライバーの気持ちを考えて、心理的なセッティングも必要になってくる。そのこと考えたらエンジンのパワー上げるほうがよっぽど簡単や。ドライバーも人間や、恐怖感のあるクルマで踏まんのは当たり前や思う。 OPT：記録を出した時にダークホース的に書かれた記事がありましたよね。あれを見てどのように思われましたか？牧原：･･･見とったれ･･･ゆう気になったな。やっぱ東京と大阪ゆうたら違うで。大阪は商人の街ゆうけど、逆や思う。東京は何でも商売に結び付けるのが上手い。ショップを見ててもそう思うわ。雑誌の広告ひとつ見ても商売上手なんは東京や。オレなんかそういうカケヒキみたいなもんが全く下手やから、それでダークホースになったんやろ。大阪は義理と人情の街や思う。これはホンマにそう思う。大阪のほうが正直な人間が多いんちゃうか。牧原は東京と大阪という間に大きなギャップがあることをしきりに強調する。なぜ最高速を狙ったか、ということに対しても、東京には負けたくない、東京だけには絶対に負けたくなかったとしきりに語った。また、彼の話には男という言葉が実に多く入っていた。男なら、あるいは男だからといった具合に、男性が物心ついてから常に自分を自分と戦わせるような、バンカラチックな感情を男という言葉でヒシヒシと伝えてくる。なんとなく東京の下町の人情と似ているような感じがフッとしてきた。昔はダートラのレースでもクソ根性だけで勝てたけど、今はクルマを完全に仕上げないと勝てない、とちょっと淋しそうに話してくれた。 OPT：牧原さんは最終的にどんな夢を持っているんでしょうか。牧原：夢ゆうか･･･ウーン、何というか最終的に真白くなりたい。燃え尽きて燃え尽きてあしたのジョーみたいに真白くなれたらいいな思います。クルマゆうワクの中で幸せになれたらいい。でも今は目の前のことをひとつひとつ片づけることで精一杯や。今ブームになってるチューンドカーゆうのは、ボクらの年代からスタートしたんやないか思う。戦後10年くらい経って生まれて、ほっとかれた世代やから自由奔放にやってきた。でもボクらの世代はみんな頑張ってるし、オレも負けんようにせなあかんなと思うてる。北の海が引退した時も同じ世代やから悔しかった。歌い手さんでもどうしても同世代の人を応援しとうなるし、オレらの年代は連帯感が強い思う。 OPT：では最後に、これからの動きみたいなものを教えてください。牧原：今、トライアル・レーシングという名でJAFの加盟クラブがあるんやけど、結構速いドライバーもいるし、7～8年もせんうちにF2に参戦したい思うとる。それと。チューナーゆうたらカッコええけど、これからはただの技術者ではアカンわ。ただターボ付けて速いクルマ作れるだけやったらいっぱい出てきよる思うし、そんな中で生きていこう思うたら、少しは営業的なセンスも必要になってくると思う。さっきもいうたけど、大阪人にとってはちょっと難しいことかもわからんけど、これからはもう職人気質の時代やない。何の世界にしろ、トップに立った人というのは何か、言葉では表せないエネルギッシュなものを全身から発散させている。先に席を立った彼の後ろ姿に、それを再確認する思いだった。・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・大阪人の心意気、気合、意地？？？　牧原さんの言葉、「スピードには言葉で表現できん何かがある･･･」響きます！　そして何より、トライアル・牧原さんが最高速をはじめ、長くチューニングカーに関われているのは、テストドライバーのことをも気遣ったクルマ作りができているから･･･なんだなぁと、あらためてこの記事を読み、感じました。東京オートサロン2018でお会いした牧原さんは、歳なりにオッチャンになられましたが、相変わらず熱い心意気も持っていらっしゃいましたヨ！（↓画像は東京オートサロン2018でお会いした現トライアルスタッフさんたちと）［OPTION
