The Greatest Critique of Higurashi: When They Cry Gou and Sotsu

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been gradually watching this incredible, affectionate takedown of Higurashi: When They Cry Gou and its immediate follow-up, Sotsu. This video... it’s really something special. 

PROS:

It honestly does so much to explain how badly this two-season “sequel” fucked everything up. I agree with almost everything she says. (I can think of like, maybe four exceptions?)

YouTuber “Bess” really takes the time to reference everything that made the original story (and its eventual epilogue!) so special when comparing it to why this purported sequel missed the mark.

Furthermore, Bess is not above giving the show credit where due when something actually goes pretty well. There are certainly memorable scenes or ideas sprinkled into Gou/Sotsu that aren’t just a clusterfuck, and she acknowledges that.

She even takes the time to compare the Higurashi Gou/Sotsu anime to the Higurashi Gou/Meguri manga (or at least the chapters of Meguri that were released when Bess was making this video), which illustrates how the manga has (so far) tried to improve on/fix the anime in almost every way.

CONS:

Uhhhh it’s SIX FUCKING HOURS.

Still, if you’re a hardcore enough Higurashi nut AND you’re still super-salty about what Gou/Sotsu did, this is definitely something I recommend watching! It’s rare to get someone doing such a lovingly detailed deep-dive on this classic story/franchise. 

On the other hand, if you’re a casual fan or actually didn’t feel that negatively towards the Gou and/or Sotsu animes, I really doubt this is going to be something you’ll want to put yourself through. So... maybe don’t.
