Elisabeth was born 24 December 1837 into the royal house of Wittlesbach. She enjoyed a relaxed childhood where she would often go out riding or hunting.

In 1854 she married her first cousin emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The couple had four children Sophia, who died at the age of two, Gisela, Rudolf and Marie Valerie. Elisabeth’s health would often suffer while she was in Austria and she would often travel to Hungary.

In 1889 her only son Rudolf committed murder-suicide with his mistress Mary Vetsera. She never fully recovered from the loss of her son and wore black from then on. After this she rarely returned to court and traveled widely.

Throughout her whole life she had an obsession with her looks and staying youthful and beautiful. She had a strict beauty and workout regime that she stuck to for her whole life.

In September 1898 she was traveling in Geneva when she on 10 September was killed by Luigi Lucheni. He wanted to kill the Duke of Orleans but he had already left. Instead he went for Elisabeth. He walked up to the empress and her lady in waiting, Countess Irma Sztáray de Sztára et Nagymihály, and pretended to stumble. He pushed a sharpened needle file into her body. After being stabbed Elisabeth collapsed and died on a boat a while later.

Engagement of Duchess Sophie Adelheid in Bavaria and Count Hans Veit of Toerring-Jettenbach. 1898.

Her parents were Karl Theodor,Duke in Bavaria , head of a cadet branch of the Bavarian Royal Family, and an ophthalmologist of recognized reputation, and his second wife, the Infanta Maria José of Braganza, third daughter of King Miguel I, exiled monarch of Portugal. Her paternal aunt was Empress Elisabeth of Austria  (Sissi). She was also the sister of Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians, consort of Albert I and of Marie Gabrielle, wife of the last crown prince of Bavaria, Rupprecht, later the head of the House of Wittlesbach.

She was named after her father's first wife, Princess Sophie of Saxony, the mother of her half-sister Amalie.

Did Napoleon II have any friends?

He did.

He was friends with Anton von Prokesch-Osten, who was an Austrian diplomat and general. He was also very close to Sophie, Princess of Bavaria from the House of Wittlesbach. She was married to Franz Karl but had little in common with him and there circulated rumors that she and Napoleon II had a romantic affair and her son Maximilian I of Mexico was her son with Napoleon II. However, there has never been any serious proof that this is true and historians believe that he just had a very close friendship with Sophie.

Amalie Auguste (Munich, 13 November 1801 – Dresden, 8 November 1877) was a Princess of Bavaria and Queen of Saxony.

Amalie was the fourth child of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria and his second wife Caroline of Baden. She was the identical twin sister of Elisabeth Louise, later Queen of Prussia as wife of Frederick William IV of Prussia. Three other sisters married King Frederick Augustus II of Saxony, Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and Maximilian Joseph, Duke in Bavaria.

In 1851 Amalie Auguste became chairwoman of Women's Association of Dresden (Frauenverein zu Dresden), an organisation founded by her sister, the then queen. Three years later, her husband inherited the throne and she became queen. In 1859 she reorganized the association as the Zentralausschuß obererzgebirgischen und der vogtländischen Frauenvereine and established a legal basis for it, under which the organisation continued until 1932.

A firm believer in divine-right absolute monarchy, the queen despised representative government and liberalism. Although she was an ultraconservative Catholic, it is unclear to what extent she was involved in the government's harsh persecution of Saxon Protestants in the 1860s, which included torture and long periods of incarceration. But later arrested by Wilhelm I who saw what she did in person for those crimes and tried and convicted by a jury for those crimes and Wilhelm acting as prosecutor and Bismarck as judge and she was sentenced life in prison and she died in a custom jail in Dresden after a long illness from tuberculosis in Dresden.

Empress Elisabeth of Austria (24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898) was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary by marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I. She was born into the royal Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. Nicknamed Sisi (also Sissi), she enjoyed an informal upbringing before marrying Emperor Franz Joseph I at the age of sixteen. The marriage thrust her into the much more formal Habsburg court life, for which she was unprepared and which she found uncongenial. Early in the marriage she was at odds with her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, who took over the rearing of Elisabeth's daughters, one of whom, Sophie, died in infancy. The birth of the heir apparent, Crown Prince Rudolf, improved her standing at court, but her health suffered under the strain, and she would often visit Hungary for its more relaxed environment. She came to develop a deep kinship with Hungary, and helped to bring about the dual monarchy of Austria–Hungary in 1867.

The death of her only son and his mistress Mary Vetsera in a murder–suicide at his hunting lodge at Mayerling in 1889 was a blow from which Elisabeth never recovered. She withdrew from court duties and travelled widely, unaccompanied by her family. In 1890, she had a palace built on the Greek Island of Corfu that she visited often. The palace, Achilleion, featuring an elaborate mythological motif, served as a refuge. She was obsessively concerned with maintaining her youthful figure and beauty, which were already legendary during her lifetime. In 1897, her sister, Duchess Sophie in Bavaria, died in an accidental fire at the "Bazar de la Charité" in Paris. While travelling in Geneva in 1898, she was mortally wounded by an Italian anarchist named Luigi Lucheni. Elisabeth was the longest reigning Empress of Austria at 44 years.

Princess Isabella of Bavaria (31 August 1863 – 26 February 1924) was the third child and eldest daughter of Prince Adalbert of Bavaria and his wife Infanta Amalia of Spain. By her marriage to Prince Thomas, Duke of Genoa, she became referred to as the Duchess of Genoa.

Maria Anna of Neuburg (28 October 1667 – 16 July 1740), was Queen of Spain from 1689 to 1700 as the second wife of Charles II, last Habsburg King of Spain.

Her marriage was dominated by the political struggle between French and Austrian factions over the Spanish throne, which resulted in the 1701 to 1714 War of the Spanish Succession. When Charles died in 1700, he was succeeded by the French candidate, Philip V and Maria Anna was exiled. She lived largely forgotten until her death in 1740.

Jacqueline (15 July 1401 – 8 October 1436), of the House of Wittelsbach, was a noblewoman who ruled the counties of Holland, Zeeland and Hainaut in the Low Countries from 1417 to 1433. She was also Dauphine of France for a short time between 1415 and 1417 and Duchess of Gloucester in the 1420s, if her marriage to Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, is accepted as valid.

Jacqueline was born in Le Quesnoy and from her birth she was referred to as "of Holland", indicating that she was the heiress of her father's estates.

Jacqueline was the last Wittelsbach ruler of Hainaut and Holland. Following her death, her estates passed into the inheritance of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy.
