since i've spent the past few days essentially staring at nothing but natsuyuu volume covers i thought it'd be so fun and silly to try and redraw them all from memory tee hee. all 30 (thirty) (三十) of them!!! wheee!!!!

i haven't actually looked at them next to the originals yet so guess what time it is!!!! LET'S COMPARE

starting with volume 1. iconic. show stopping. masterpiece. the mona lisa of natsuyuu SURELY i reproduced every single detail perfectly such that it kickstarts my career as a forgery artist RIGHT

as i was toying w the idea of doing this redraw thing i was still working on collecting my Images and Pictures so i kinda started taking note of a few small things here & there and one of them was just. the general gist of this cover SO LIKE that's why it's so good LOL

forgor the flowers tho. i literally forget everything that isn't a character like immediately BUT OK CUT ME SOME SLACK like after a point the covers start being whole ass scenes which are SO much easier to remember shit abt than the fuckin Green Void (p sure this is the last green void cover tho)

8/10 composition is gr8 but details like the shirt & the yellow flowers are wrong, also the stick is backwards. i literally looked up what that thing is called and forgot already tee hee

u know what the green void turned into bushes and i think that's beautiful.... like points for creativity on my part tbh. like to be completely honest. 3/10 i got the characters right

i remembered the BARE essentials of the composition but not much else... since i thought the green void was gone i put the green i remembered into natsume's yukata (and then put him in the school uniform again LOL) and went WELP. GUESS I'LL DIE NOW

OK THIS ONE.... i almost died irl trying to remember this shit, even before i started and i was still viewing the covers i was like there is no way in HELL im remembering this shit for vol 10. and i was right

like. Purple. White Mask. Antlers. WILD layered clothing. at first i drew the mask as an actual deer skull but later had a straight up epiphany and redrew it like that which... still not correct but I MEAN.... IT'S PRETTY GOOD

i cant believe most of the purple is the bg oughgh his clothes are WHITE..... this is fucked up. i DID remember the stick tho, bells and everything!! actually bells and nothing else!!!

obviously the most striking thing abt this cover is the bg w that deep burgundy & the circular window so that was the main thing i nailed down right away (my palette was more muted tho). also natsume sitting there w paper in his mouth but i thought he was mid return when rly hes playing like keep-the-balloon-off-the-floor or whatever the fuck he's doing. i love u natsume

I remember reading one of your asks on how you would like to do Batman and Wonder Woman's rouges right if you DID re-imagine them, so here are some recommendations.

For the Batman stuff, your best shots are looking at B:TAS/TNBA (A lot of the rouges were done wonderful there), The Arkham Games (Riddler, Bane, Catwoman, Scarecrow, and Penguin, but Joker is there too), and The Batman 2022 (Once again Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin, and if we want to get into it Gotham's corruption). The Non-B:TAS pieces of media are dark, but they're not edgy dark thankfully so you can pull some pieces from there for Inso.

Now for getting Wonder Woman's rouges right, the best recommendations I have is just reading up on greek mythology and picking up some of the old school, pre-52 Wonder Woman comics to see what elements of from those characters you can pick apart and remix into something faithful yet modern. I mean its what the B:TAS crew did, and one of the reasons why the show is still iconic.

You don't have to follow this advice, but just be aware that you have years of media to help you.

I've watched all of those Bat media already! I'm a big DCAU fan (finally finished re-watching Justice League Unlimited wahoo), I followed the Arkham games closely in college (where I really became a Bat-fan), and I re-watched The Batman 2022 recently! It's a delight. I tee-hee-d the whole time, what a treat. These adaptations just do such a good job that I don't know what else to add! Like what's there for me to change up? At most Scarecrow is definitely underdone in BTAS and the Arkham Games, so there's creatively wiggle room to reimagine him. But the others? Dunno yet until I look into them more.

Yeah that's honestly exactly my struggle with Wonder Woman, haha. You basically need a lot of homework before tackling adapting her (at least the way I do it)- not only does she have a ton of comics and re-imaginings, but Greek mythology on top of that? Woof I have not attended Wonder Woman university yet where I'd have to major in mythology and history, and minor in "what did this male writer do wrong this time" haha.

I'm so intimately familiar with Martian Manhunter's stories at this point (even without having read all of them, pre-Crisis and many Justice League comics are holes in my knowledge, still-) that I can spot character arc pitfalls and the weaknesses of an adaptation immediately. I know all the plots writers re-cycle with him at this point- so I know where to innovate and where I can pull a through line from. I don't know Diana well enough to do that yet.

So I was just wondering how you got so good at character design? I mean these have got to be the most iconic and recognizable DSAF design interpretations I’ve ever seen. What is your process when designing characters?

(sorry about the rant I love talking about character designs)

Ever since I was a small specimen, I was always interested in how to make a memorable design (meanly shapes) while also using color theory on how each color complements each other. so when I making these versions, I took into account the original designs while also using shapes such has I know I wanted Pen to be a kind and huggable kinda guy so I primarily used circles and thanks to his original design been orange, it helped with making him seem like a warm guy while making Dave, I wanted them to look scary and distain so I used sharp edges and again thanks to the original been purple, it adds a layer of mystery to it like "why do you do this". I can't really talk much on the phone guys since their designs are pretty concrete already but one thing I noticed is that both phone guys (from DSaf 1 and 2) have a red phone and usually red means danger so I made this version of Phone guy (Steven) a bit...suspicious. When it came to the puppet, I wanted to give him a dream like feel to the deign so I used the fnaf 6 puppet has a bases for the design along with using elements from NiGHTS to give that dream like feel. The uniforms they wear are a shade of light blue which brings a sense of calmness admits the chaos that is freddy fazbender pepperonerie. Also one thing I would also like to add are that Pen’s and Dave’s pants colors are switched to show that they have a different approach and mirror each other. Another thing I like to add with my character are cat-like and dog-like features like how when Dave gets spooked, their "back spikes" frizz's up and when you think of Pen, you think of a nice dog who is very protective of he's friends ya know? I've gone through many versions of these characters and the one thing I wanted to do is make them simple. I originally had some accessories on them but I wanted them to be simple at first and has time goes on, their designs well change, showing a since of growth in them. One last thing that I always done with all of my oc's is to show change through their hair but I can't get into that without spoilers so tee hee. Also the way I draw them is on purpose since it adds the simplicity to them and some may have noticed is that I never use black or white with expectations for the eyes.

Again sorry for the rant, i cut out most of what was ramblings and I hope this gives you a new look on how to make your own OC's :)

explaining my gifts a bit! i know you love aesthetics and stims and i was going for those primarily but you know how i feel about my aesthetics and stims .... i think youre so much better at them god honestly so im like nervous making them wondering if you'll like fhdhshhddh which is pretty ridiculous since i know you'll love anything but :pweading: . i did my best and i put love into all of these so i truly hope it is okay. i made almost everything the same day except for the poem and gfx so like the soyoanon board was something i came up with the day after we were talking about bandori and you told me abt mygo and ave mujica and im like ! i can make something up from that yes i do love bandori art. but i don't actually know anything about soyoanon so i only went by vibes which is like... sharing tea after school in the evening vibes, and after school vibes in general because anon reminds me of cherry blossoms and soyo reminds me of a nice warm evening so thats what i came up with, again im not very confident with my aes but i hope i got it . cry. and then hikawa sisters of course because you are sayo and i know you love hina-chan and i chose that card in particular bc i always associate you with stars! and i don't know i think it's tender. and i love you both ofc omg my hina-chan as aya and you as tsugu you're so so cute and i hope this brings you happiness! :^}

the icons came as a "i'll throw this in" gift but its also bc you told me that you felt insecure (??) about having so many bandori kins but like . don't be i love you so much :} I went back and forth a lot on the style until i eventually settled on the star design with an alternate normal ver. the colouring is slightly diff bc i made them on separate instances and i didnt save the psd but we'll pretend like they're the same ajdjsjs

finally my abundance of furinas..... this goes without saying but i love my furi so much partly because of my inherent genshin spin but i actually Understand now and i love you... the stim board is bc i thought it would be fun to make one for her and it was ! she is so you like the teatime aesthetic and her love of cakes and i incorporated both so i hope you likeys.... even though im not good with stims i think it looks okay and i gave a bonus neuvi as well. tee hee. talking about the poem a bit i wrote that like the same day oz assigned me to you because i was so excited and that morning i listened to la vaguelette for the first time and i came up with that. because you said i can gift whatever else and i was thinking the only other thing in my arsenal is writing (art too but i have been terribly unmotivated on that end ....) i have not yet properly gone through fontaine or her story and of course it is Your feelings but i tried to put that into pretty words as well, plus i made my qpp and my best friend read through it first and they both liked it so i hope you will too... smile. the gfx set i was gonna make from the start but it took a couple days of inspiration-gathering, and i was thinking how we talked about like. how you like working with colours but struggle with like creating a design like making from a blank canvas but i do love making designs so i put my whole mind into the set and i really like what came out of it !! these are just tumblr gfxs that you just stare at and not use but regardless i really hope you enjoysies everything, i love you so much!!!

lee aaron aaron !! our dad of the year sobs. of course, my favorite thing about aaron is how nurturing he is ! he has no problem taking care of others, and i think that although it’s easy for younger / less experienced trainees to be intimidated by those above them, aaron removes that stigma completely ! truly a gentle soul. my only complaint about aaron is that he’s so selfless that i feel he sometimes forget about himself, so aaron please eat more and take care of your health oijoijoioij !!

lee youngmin the way i love youngmin !! i was so touched by his patience when he helped my baby nari get herself together when it came to learning lines for cram school ! it proved to me that he’s a v caring person, and even if acting was sort of a sore subject for him, he still went through with helping her ! and that brings me to my next point - congrats for joining the actors youngmin !! i admire him for giving something he’s apprehensive about another shot, and i’m so incredibly excited to see how it goes for him !

song yifei ok even though i don’t know yifei too well yet seeing her intro did help me see why i’m going to love her so much !! i appreciate her adaptation to such an unusual environment like korea, and although i’m sure she’s homesick and a little lost she’s already doing her part to adjust to life in korea ! starting so young, i have to admire her work ethic and her strength by not giving up ! i’m excited to see what she can offer us all !

hwang minsik ok so !! even though minsik is quite the introvert, i think it’s v cool that he has worked past that, and although it may have been uncomfortable, got more comfortable performing in front of others ! i think that being in his head for the majority of the time will actually prove to work in his favor, as it’ll be easier to transfer all the emotions he’s feeling into his music when he locks down and pursues his dream of being a producer !

tsuchiya mitsuki from what i’ve seen, mitsuki seems to be very considerate of others, and i like that she celebrates other’s accomplishments outside of just her own ! the entertainment career can be a very risky and sometimes scary one, but i think that she’s doing a great job at rolling with it and putting her all into forming it into a serious career path for herself !

yamashita ichika i think she put it best - she’s new to korea, but not this world !! i love love LOVE how sure of herself ichika is, and though it may come off as blunt, maybe y’all aren’t just ready to accept the truth she’s spilling ... 👀 lMAO no but for real !! she’s a woman who knows what she wants and i never will be mad at that ! you can never say that ichika doesn’t keep it real and i think that’s something we need to learn from her !

hwang subin i think subin is incredibly self-aware, which really is such a super important trait to have ?? he’s had a lot of conflicts over his training period, but he’s overcame them, and to me he holds a lot of grace even in those scenarios he has this sort of ... calmness to him ? idk maybe that’s subjective but that’s how i feel ! i think in the end he’s going to turn the pain into power, and he’ll be one of the people really idolized for their resilience !

kim minjee i feel like along her path to fame, she’s learning all sorts of new things about herself in the industry, and that feeling of self-discovery is awesome ! i think she’s a really good example of the changes people go through throughout their path toward stardom ! i think she does her best to embrace both the highs and lows life brings her, which i think is preparing her to be a really steady person when it comes to being famous !

seo yumi though yumi did go through a lot of hardship with her first debut, i really respect her for fighting to prove she deserves a spot in a group for a second time, even if the first time wasn’t even her fault ! i think because of it, even if her light’s dimmed a little, her enhanced discipline will work in her favor, as well as her prior experience, and potentially give her a step up among others ! which, hopefully, will make the hardships she went through not to be in vein !

han insoo insoo’s gone through quite a bit, and though i’d imagine that to be incredibly tough on him, he hasn’t lost his shine ! he still has a brightness to him when interacting around the people he loves, and i think that’s what it takes to be in a band ! i wish nothing but the best for him, because honestly, i think he’s just trying to get by and have a good time, and i really have to respect it !

choi jongsuk okay so from what i see jongsuk is a tad manipulative in the way he interacts with people ... and yet ... i stan ? obviously this isn’t a very good trait, but it is entertaining, especially for a messy mun like me haha !! i think, if he wants to, he can actually use his particularly good social skills to his advantage, and become a charmer among his fans !

choi daehyun omg prince daehyun rise !!! i always love the spoiled rich boy types, because to me, they have the most room for growth ! if i’m being honest with you as ... awful as he might be i think he’s one of those trainees who would 100% give everyone a run for their money ? because if he doesn’t have anything ( beside money ofc ) he has confidence, and well .... confidence is a dangerous thing !! i’m really really anticipating seeing how he’ll get along with the other trainees, and his journey in legacy !!

chwe hunji phew .... my adoptive son !! i admit i am slightly biased to hunji i am i am what about it !!! 😌💖 i gush about him all the time so i’ll keep it ( relatively ) short - i don’t think hunji realizes, but given the whirlwind of events that’s happened in less than a year, he’s doing a fantastic job of both grieving and growing !! he’s been able to look out for those who need him most even in his darkest times, put up with max’s shenanigans even amongst trying to decipher his feelings for him, and adapted to a ever-changing climate that comes with being a trainee in his hardest year ! not to mention how much he’s grown since his arrival !! his development ?? chef’s kiss !

kang dongwon first of all already massive respect to dongwon for doing school and training at the same time ?? that’s already difficult in itself ! but i think he’s taken a lot of risks despite not necessarily wanting to, like expanding outside of activities he’d expected that he would do ! it’s good for him to dip his toe into numerous places, and he’ll be less thrown off if he’s asked to do something unexpected in the future. also him & his relationship w his siblings is the best haha !!

park sarang first off seojin and sarang together are such a cool duo !! the concept of siblings in the industry is honestly so cool ?? but anywho ! but i soso admire sarang !! even though she was initially was following her brother’s dream, it’s gradually morphed into her own, and she really has developed an individual name for herself, which shows her passion and determinism ! i also love how they have a healthy relationship, even with normal sibling fights, without getting into super super competitive territory ?? that just shows her capability to love & that’s great !

kim jinseo first off !! his familial relationship w shinha ? we love to see it ! cutest cousins on the block ! but what i admire about jinseo is how stable he is ! i think he can help people and handle his own problems without getting too stressed, he’s a good problem solver and i think he can calm down and figure out the best way to approach a situation ? also once again him & tee ? cute, we ship it 😊

kim ara first off, friend of the year award goes to ara for helping hanbyul through her breakup and working around processing her emotions ! and also that she’s pretty mature in handling her own breakup w / nathan ! that brings me to the point that i feel ara is a thoughtful person, who definitely sees the good even in bad scenarios and tries to think of the positives that come out of her life, even if it can be difficult to do so !

jin eunji now we know that’s my queen !!!!! i honestly love seeing eunji’s development, and she’s much more of a deep character than she shows on the outside ?? and there’s even more left for others to discover about her ! she’s trying to work through her shit but I like her because she’s the realest depiction of someone who’s growing - because it’s not particularly nice or cute ?? it’s rough but it’s real, she’s struggling to grow and move through her emotions but she’s growing nonetheless and i love that for her !!!

park seon seon is def the type of girl who is just sort of taking it day by day, and i respect it so much !! she has a lot to discover of herself and what she wants to do, but quite honestly i like that about her !! i think that she’s still young and def doesn’t need to stress about it, and i like that she’s just sort of flowing in whichever direction that life wants to take her ! i can only imagine how far she’ll go when she discovers her true potential !

lim sanghyun i feel like sanghyun really is prepared for any situation that’s thrown at him, even if he feels like he can’t do it !! i mean, since birth he’s had tons of bad cards thrown at him, and yet he always manages to turn them into something good ? although it may seem like he doesn’t have good fortune, to me, it seems he has the opposite, because he always finds a way out the trenches !! i think sanghyun’s legacy’s phoenix !

choi daehyung omg daehyung has been a favorite of mine since he came !! i love peeking at the many relationships he has bc they’re tbh so interesting !! he's honestly fit to be a main character in a show ? and i think, despite what daehyung thinks, he’s grown a lot in the time he’s been here ! to me, he’s more aware of his emotions, and more reflective of the choices he makes ! sure he’s got some things to work on but let’s be real .... don’t we all ?

lau mike mike is such a breath of fresh air !! def a roll with the punches kind of guy - reminds me of those popular kids where it’s just like ... dang, things always seem to be go well for them ?? i’m jealous ?? but i think more of that has to do with mike rather than him just having good luck ! he does good at adapting & working hard, from moving to korea, to changing careers, to now training ! he seems to excel and everything he does and i have no doubt that will help him out in the long run !

li zimeng meng is so pretty !! but she’s also SO much more !! this whole thing of her feeling average, and like she didn’t really stand out in comparison to the other trainees .... it’s so real !! and honestly, so good for her ! even though she doesn’t feel special always, i KNOW she is, but i think it’s also great she has this good foundation ? because rather than being good at only 1 thing and realizing in the long run she hates it, zimeng has the potential to be super well-versed and i think she’ll be more aware of what she needs to work on to improve !

tsai king truly our king ... and i don’t mean that ironically !! i looove king’s development, i truly love to see it !! though he’s still got his pride, i think he’s transformed his confidence from blind cockiness to a reason for him to want to work hard and succeed ?? king definitely had things to work on, but he has worked on them, and i think he’s truly proved his place in legacy in the long time he’s been here !! also thoroughly impressed w how much he’s done !

bae doha i think that if I had to describe doha, it would be “ proceed with caution ” !! he’s a cautious person, i feel, who wants the balance between having a good life and keeping himself grounded ? which is a really good type of personality, and I think it would make him a leader for those around him ! he’s also very observant, and i think that will make him much more meticulous of a person as an actor !

song shaun first of all i gotta still thank shaun for doing tiktok dances with max back in the day !!!! that was iconic and i will never forget it lol !! and i'm so glad he’s back. anyways, i think shaun is definitely the type of person that’ll stay true to himself even after becoming famous, he seems v carefree, but also w/o not losing that ambition to work hard ??

pongsak arinya arin is so freaking adorable !!! i think she’s like a puppy and I love it !! she’s so curious about the way around her, i think she just loves what life has to offer her and in turn life loves her ?? she has such a playful and optimistic light about her and to me, it’s impossible not to want to be her friend !! her fans will easily love her <33

jeon haru to me, haru seems like a team player !! he listens to the input of other’s, and i think before rushing to do what he wants to do, it’s in his spirit to think of how his actions affect other people ! and i think that’s shown in how he’s babysitting on the show, even though he’s a little panicked ! i also think he’s a good self-soother, he’s good at helping calm himself down and make himself feel better, and to me that’s so great !!

liu jiao I think she’s doing a great job at making her reality one she enjoys ! she’s struggling to find the differences between her dreams and her moms, what she wants and what she doesn’t ! and still, i believe that she’s doing well and spreading love to those around her despite ! i hope she finds full inner peace and that she can live a life of happiness ( and a little wrecklessness tbh ) without any worries !!

This is such a predictable basic answer but I really love the main characters. No surprise picks here lol. first year trio my beloved...

I’ll start with Yuuji because he’s the protagonist. The best boy. First in my heart. The reasons I love him can be neatly summarized in this lil amv which is basically a compilation of all his best and cutest expressions. Look me in the eyes after watching that and tell me he’s not the most lovable thing about this whole series. You can’t do it. He’s literally so lovable what the hell

Jokes aside, the thing that draws me to Yuuji is just how unshakably kind he is. It’s in the name, Yuuji means unwavering humanity. Like Panda said during the goodwill arc, he inspires everyone around him by being this one bright point in what is established in canon as a pretty miserable way of life. He has this sensitivity and selflessness and emotional intelligence about him that is pretty rare among male protagonists imo, and he’s always trying so hard to do the right thing and do right by others even when it comes to combat and death. When he gets hurt and endures suffering (eg when he failed to save Junpei), he still does his best to keep his heart open and stay true to his principles, I find that really admirable. Also the fact that his execution is set out as a real possibility at the start of the story makes everything about him more dear to me... characters who are living on borrowed time mess me up. Not to use a meme from 2014 but Yuuji is honestly a cinnamon roll too good to pure for the jujutsu world and I love him.

Megumi!! I know I said Yuuji was best boy, but Megumi is also best boy first in my heart. They’re both best boys. Best boys together. Best boyfriends, if you will

It’s hard to put my finger on exactly why I adore him to such a degree, especially in a non spoilery way. He seems kind of gruff and standoffish but he gets embarrassed super easily... he considers himself to be sensible and serious but he shares one braincell with the rest of the trio... he looks like a standard emo shonen rival but he turns out to be so supportive and such a genuine good friend. He’s got depth, he’s got layers. Like an onion. I do think he shines brightest when he’s acting as a foil to Yuuji. It’s so fascinating to me how they seek the same goals but they learn different lessons and take different roads to get there, and how even with their differing outlooks they still hold a deep respect for each other’s approaches. All the time I think about that one interview calling him the heroine of the story, I’m just gonna link it because I won’t be able to summarize it succinctly. Megumi steals the show for me every scene he’s in, particularly during the Origin of Obedience arc, and my affection for him knows no bounds.

And of course I must express my undying and eternal love for Nobara. I know this is breaking the rules again but Nobara is ALSO first in my heart... the undisputed best girl of the series. “I love myself when I’m all dressed up and pretty and I love myself when I’m strong, I’m Kugisaki Nobara” hello??? “You’re a bad match for me” HELLO??? She’s so iconic, and as much as I like softer feminine female characters with inner strength, I lose my mind whenever Nobara gets the chance to be snappy and aggressive and totally unhinged. I love it when shonens let their female characters be actual people.

But also underneath all that Nobara is still really caring and so ride or die for her friends, and it honestly melts my heart. Her little speech to Yuuji about how she only has so many seats free in her heart but that some people like him just bring their own chair and sit down... there’s a post saying this is maybe the sweetest way op has ever heard someone say ‘I care about you’ and I agree. It’s such a wonderful little moment that says so much about her character and her friendship with the boys. I love it when shonens let their main trio be actual friends. Anyway words cannot describe the depth of my love for best girl Nobara, Queen Of Shonen Jump (she shares the crown with Power from chainsaw man tee hee).

Gojou and Getou are definitely on my list of top faves too, but literally every single thing that really sells me on both their characters is a massive manga spoiler so I won’t elaborate there. Just know that I love them.

He slowly falls in love with Amy and is really confused with how he's feeling so he talks with Amy about it. I need me some awkward wholesome SonAmy >A

THIS IS AN AU, lol

Prompt:

“It’s sort of weird you would ask me here, Sonic. Usually, we hang outside of movies and try to zip in free or dart if we get caught trying!” Amy, much older and much more matured now, giggled with a slight snort that caught her off guard as she held her hand up over her mouth.

It had been a while… a long while… since we’d taken a break from each other.

Amy swapped her iconic red and white dress for something more form-fitting. For some reason, she dressed like a punky rebel now, making me think I influenced her a little too much with those ‘daring movie dates’ of the past.

Those were meant to just be fun. Over time, it started confusing me. Amy, of course, saw them as officials dates until one day… she chilled out.

It’s like she had given up on thinking romantically about me, and after she did, I started hanging out with her more.

Who knew girls could be so… so…

Awesome?

We started doing a lot of derring-dos like jumping off skyscrapers, me grabbing her and scaling down the side. The city became more alive with random karaoke with the gang to sudden—competitive—miniature golf tourneys… just us two.

Amy never reached out to me anymore. She didn’t follow. She only ran towards the hottest sales and latest fashion. I would have hated it if she became some sort of a diva, but instead, she turned into a ‘do or die’ kind of girl… and honestly?

I’ve been feeling up for a ride.

“You used to like it here.” I lifted a leg up to the raised, concrete wall that cut off the city from the park. I wanted to take her away from the city’s air… I wanted to bring her back to her roots.

Nature…-Ish, I guess.

“Every time I brought you here,… you’d try and kiss me.” I thought that was a bit blunt, but she seemed to roll her eyes to me and lower them as if sensing a joke.

Which, it half was…

She laughed again, but this time, sticking her mouth straight up to the sky to really exaggerate the bounce her chin made at the ridiculous gesture. “Hahaha! Anytime I got with you seemed like a treat! I couldn’t help but think it a fantastic opportunity… A date…” she looked off into the park, and just as I planned, she looked to a couple who were sitting close to each other.

The girl’s legs were flopped over the dudes. His hand was resting on them while he flipped through his book, and she, her own.

“…Couples are so…” Amy started, which perked me up because I haven’t heard her speak about ‘couple’ topics in a few years now… “…Annoyingly sweet.” She looked away and suddenly started digging like a meerkat into the purse.

I frowned. My sudden enthusiasm at seeing the little 12-year-old girl again was diminished at her immediate side-swiping of the thought all together.

My eyes lowered, showing more of my dislike in these results. “What? You don’t want annoyingly cute anymore? I thought you were the master of that!” I laughed, again, trying to be slick about my approach with this.

Eggman had attacked just a few weeks ago. He was getting up there in age… then again, he always was. But for some reason, this old man dipped his toe into Ponce de León’s Fountain of Youth and has been his giddy, world-conquering self ever since…

Though, his latest scheme harkened back to my glory days. I thought it a nice touch, almost as if Eggman was giving me a birthday present or something. In a… murdering love… kind of way.

But Amy didn’t get me anything for my birthday.

That’s when I noticed she hadn’t hugged or doted on me in a long time.

I guess I never noticed after all the times we’ve casually hung out together, but Amy was starting to attract a lot of attention from other men.

I would occasionally see her flirting, which itched me the wrong way, to be honest, but turn any offers down when it came to making something serious.

I didn’t watch her or anything…

It’s called guarding your friends wisely.

Good friends do that.

Well, anyway… I started thinking maybe it was time to actually THINK about Amy Rose.

Ah… The rose that blew away from the wind… I definitely wasn’t expecting that.

It’s almost like she willingly did anything I dared and then suggested reckless—admittedly fun—activities just cause she knew I would do it instead of asking for my hand in marriage or dating schedules.

I honestly… missed those dating schedules.

Usually, on my birthday, she’d insist on treating me to something and then a movie.

That ‘something’ is what I dreaded most. It was THE most boringest activity any young girl could put upon an adventurous boy’s heart!

But I digress… This time, when she just said ‘Happy Birthday!’ and walked on like I meant nothing to her… I really was concerned.

The boys didn’t bother me. I knew nothing would really happen anyway.

Her not chasing after me during adventures wasn’t a big deal. I knew I could always swing by the apartment sometime and grab a bite to eat with her.

No homemade meals especially for Sonic The Hedgehog was a change, but I got used to snacks.

No marriage proposals were especially nice.

But the day she didn’t seem to even care I existed… that struck me the most and caused some sort of… lasting, depressing impression on me.

That’s why I asked her to the park today.

And… that’s admittedly why I planted our bums right in front of the adorable and openly visible couple.

“Oh, that?” She tilted her hair back to me, some earrings clanging along with the smooth movement. “Ha..ha..ha.” she wiggled her head to me, again the clanging jingled as if mocking me as well. “We both know I’ve grown out of that. Besides, I’m far too clever to waste my time on men.” She pulled out the desired object she was looking for in her purse.

A mirror.

As she pulled out some lipstick and started applying it, I couldn’t help but ball up my hand for a second, death-glaring that cherry-flavored lip gloss and look away with a scowl spreading across my face.

How could she torture me like that!?

“You don’t… feel anything towards men anymore?” I decided, heck! If she thinks I’m just teasing her, then I will.

It’s getting me somewhere. And I honestly can’t explain everything I’m feeling. Maybe if she talks more, I can better identify why her ‘self-absorbed’ attitude was getting to me lately…

I bit my thumb to hold in my anger. That stupid mirror. She used to look into my eyes to see herself. She never said it, but I knew that’s what she was doing.

I knew if I ever asked, she’d say something crazy like- I want to see myself as you see me, Sonic! And tee-hee like the innocent but lovestruck girl she was back then.

I looked back into her eyes.

The deep mascara-soaked eyelashes made it impossible to see through to her eyes. I couldn’t even see a reflection in them from this angle. The lashes draped over like shredded black curtains that bounced as she blinked gently.

I would have stared longer to describe them a bit better to you, but sadly, she looked up at me and winked, smiling.

I turned away with a flinch. I hated when she did that!

“Woah! For a second there, I could have sworn you blushed!”

Now I grinded my teeth together, “I was just embarrassed… is all.” I ruffled some of my quills up with my hand and then shook my head to drop them back down in place.

“You’re so funny, Sonic. You always were, but now… especially so!” she clicked her feet together and let them sway a moment as her shoulders bounced, letting her head duck down between them before she held it high and pompously again.

It’s like she knew she was pretty and didn’t care.

Like I wanted to stare and she wouldn’t let me.

Not like I cared what she would have wanted me to do…

“Nah… Men are just… men now.” She looked away again, but I could tell by her tone that something was off with that.

“…You giving up?” I asked and suddenly realized how awful that sounded.

I was about to try and make a quick save by forming a ‘joke’ out of it but she tilted her head and I grew silent.

“…I mean… haven’t you?” she turned her head to me. “About girls. You’ve never really been interested in anyone. I guess after some time, I just accepted that.” She nodded and I felt like every jump of her head was another stab in my back.

I twitched painfully at her nodding and turned away, darting my eyes a bit before looking back to the couple.

“…I didn’t give up.” I stated, a bit shallowly. “I just… never started.” I looked down to my hand, seeing it flex out as it tried to remain ‘cool’.

Why was this so awkward? Why did I feel sweaty and out of my element..? All of a sudden, she had made me tense and wary of her. What was this!?

“…Oh.” Amy looked forward again, and for once, I actually saw her a bit shaken up about me again.

“I just… always assumed you… you never liked… certain girls.” She suddenly started tugging on her hair, moving her fingers through it and quickly brushing it out. I slowly turned back, fascinated by the nervous movement and seeing some real flustered pink trace against her cheeks for the first time in a millennia of hanging out with her.

I was… kinda awestruck at it.

“I mean… you just were a … you know… womanizer or something.” She cleared her throat as if that was hard to say, and honestly, I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Why would I be a womanizer if I never flirted with anyone!?” I laughed, but she seemed spooked about that reaction too.

“But you-! You were always..!” she cut herself off, leaning forward to me before pulling herself back.

I hid my face behind my hand as I laughed, peeking through to hope she didn’t notice I was trying to lure out more of a confession in her.

If I knew how she felt… maybe… then I could understand what I was feeling…

She seemed really shaken up now, her head shifting about and her eyes looking at different specks on the ground.

She blushed, and I suddenly felt my heart soar as though racing up a loop-de-loop of the past.

“Amy…”

“I-it’s nothing! You just… always smiled at them and-!” she grew incredibly…

Adorable.

Her hands raced to the sides of her cheeks, “I thought you liked those wild women…” she seemed to be panicking, and quickly tugged her purse closer to her and started rampaging around in it.

“Woah, woah..! Hey! Calm down…” I couldn’t help it, I was smiling!

This girl didn’t really… transform herself to be what she thought I would like… did she?

Amy quickly took out a makeup remover wipe from her purse and held it for a moment… she shoved it back into her purse and shoved the entire thing away.

“It’s fine. Honestly, I like myself and I like our new dynamic.”

“Dynamic?” Our relationship was anything BUT dynamic…

She was a cheerful and always encouraging girl from the sidelines. Recently, she had become the fun girl cheerfully encouraging mischief from the sidelines.

Both were fine. But only one of them was Amy to me. The other was a girl I knew a long time ago… she was cute, made me a little apprehensive, but was kind and loyal in her faith that I could save the world.

Then there was Amy. The same girl, but much more interesting!

I could relax now, but she was still feisty! Just in… eh… another kind of way.

She was loud and didn’t care. Wild, always wanting a good time. Never a dull moment…

The two just… mixed. After the old Amy faded from memory, I hadn’t noticed how much I-

That’s it.

My eyes widened when I realized what I was feeling.

“Amy… I missed you!”

Her face froze and she studied something intensely in her mind, before turning back to me again. “What?”

“Do you still like me?” I jumped both my feet up to the wall now, making sure to balance myself and stay crouched by her side. “I mean… like me enough to want to… sit all cute and affectionally like those two, over there?” I moved my head in the direction of the couple but only moved my gaze from her for a second.

She was considerably flustered now.

I knew without a doubt she still had feelings for me, and it gave me courage and a thrill I hadn’t felt in an awfully long time.

“Why not?” I shrugged, “Your cute, I’m handsome. We’re especially good at thrill rides and don’t care what mischief we get into! The only requirement is that you stay the girl you want to be. How ‘bout it?” I gave her my best ‘fantasy dream boy’ look and waited—expecting everything to go my way and have her squeal in delight at my offer.

But… she remained silent and spooked… and my confidence was all but destroyed in a matter of two, long eyelash blinks.

“…No.” Amy breathed out.

It was like the sound of death, lingering on her recently moistened-up lips and trailing into my soul to gently pull my spirit away and send me packing.

“…No?” I felt my entire body grow heavy, moving back down to the wall. “No..?” I felt my voice soften, a crack was placed in the spaces of my pride and I couldn’t see clearly for a moment.

Her eyes watered up, “No.” she stated again.

This time, it was like she hesitated on the gunshot.

“Because I do care.” She looked away, down at the ground. “I do care what kind of mischief we get ourselves into.” She grabbed her purse and jumped down from the wall.

I didn’t even notice how fast my body was moving on its own. I was following her for a change… unable to rip myself away from her.

“And I do care what girl I want to be. What girl I thought I could never be. And what girl I thought you’d drop to a knee and marry! But I’m done thinking about you all the time!” she turned swiftly around, like a tornado cut short in it’s spin. But I was still knocked over, I stopped so quickly at the whiplash of her spiraling fury of wind that I got my breath shoved right back down my throat.

When had she become so…

Powerful?

“If you want me, Sonic The Hedgehog. I expect you to fight for me like every other man in this world!” she hit me with her purse, and I stumbled back, as she advanced forward. “I expect you to think about me every day!” she swung another go at me, and this time I instinctively put up my arm to try and block it. “I want you to change yourself into a better man that I would admire and appreciate! That I could have fun with and emotionally invest my time and energy into! I want you to invest in me!” She kept swinging, and I was thankful it was the purse and not the toned, ripped as a muscular body-builder hammer that’s ridiculous name only disguised how formidable it was.

“Ames…” I stopped moving backwards. I had gained the insight I wanted. But it was a little hard to swallow.

“I want you to be committed to me like you are right now!” she swung one last shot, letting it slide and dangle off after its strike landed. She breathed heavily now, her back hunched and her anger subsiding.

“I want… I want you to say it first.”

I didn’t move.

“…I want you to move first!” she looked up with a look I had only wished I never saw before.

I had hurt her.

She had felt played and cheated.

Her passion was overlooked as a game and she wanted nothing more than to keep going with it. Because she saw I enjoyed it. And she’d rather have that over heartbreak.

But now I was asking for heartbreak. I was asking her to go right back into that endless chase with me and she wouldn’t put up with it anymore.

She had grown so strong and independent. She must still care about me… but she wouldn’t allow herself to fall into that trap again.

I hadn’t realized… how much suffering I must have put her through after all these years.

It pained my heart to think about it, but I was a total butt to her when she was young and in love.

I should have been more thoughtful. Less careless about how I reacted to her praises and affections.

How could I have asked her to do all that again? Go through all that without first proving I would commit to do the same?

“…Alright, Amy. I get it. You win.”

She let out an emote that I couldn’t quite answer back with. It was as though she had cut off an intense cry and only let the first syllable of the terrible whine out.

“You idiot!” she cried out, her body sinking down as she swayed in her emotional outburst. “You never let me win!”

It was like she flicked a switch.

Behind my eyes, there was something triggered.

I bolted towards her, grabbing her and pulling her as tightly close to me at supersonic speeds.

I hadn’t moved that fast in a long time. It was a quick action. I just responded immediately to it. As though it was a cry for help.

I held her then… just held her.

She felt hot and panicked at my sudden touch.

How long has it been..? Since we’ve last been this close..? Since we’ve really, truly embraced without a shred of holding back before?

She didn’t cry, she didn’t fight me, she just…

Went limp a moment.

When she finally spoke, I could tell she was exhausted from having felt so many things and not being ready for it. It had probably been so long since she had felt these feelings for me again… and honestly…

I was just starting to understand how powerful this thing was…

If this was what Amy had felt… back when she was just 12…

“I never meant hurt you, Ames.” I pulled her closer, not daring to let her go now. Not when I knew what was going on inside my heart now. It wasn’t awkward for no reason… it was because I missed her. I missed her so much. I had recognized the resistance and lack of love and I wanted it back. I wanted to stop the game. I wanted to quit the endless chase, turn around, and actually make her smile for good this time.

I wanted to reward her.

I never knew this was what she had felt.

For so long, I had denied her any chance of an actual victory over me. Over my stupid pride. My teases. My constant ‘mirror’ that didn’t want me to see her for what she truly was.

Love.

She was Amy.

“I think I finally get it, Amy.” I felt my mouth grow dry, my throat get slightly sore as she lightly gasped and turned to look up and to the side at me.

Her hand suddenly gripped, ever so more into my chest, below my shoulder…

“Understand… what?” she inquired as if holding everything in.

I sighed, dipping into her more. “How truly hard it must feel… to be in love with me.”

She remained silent.

“Because I can honestly say now-“ I pulled her just inches away from me, looking into those eyes that finally reflected an image of me. The me I now wanted to be. “That loving you is no easy feat either.”

Her eyes glossed over, widening.

Which reminded me of those lips…

I angled my head down, staring at those moistened tempters…

“I never realized how powerful love could draw you in…”

Did she notice?

I looked back up at her, my mouth agape as her’s hung a bit too.

It would be so simple…

To just lean in and-

“But I have something to prove to you now.” I stepped away, using every amount of self-control I had to do so.

I stood tall and proud, “I have to win your heart this time around, right?” I cocked my head and smirked. This time, I was actually attempting to flirt with a girl.

She still looked awestruck, and so I continued.

“8 o’clock. Park. Bring a book.” I bolted away, “A good one!” I called out, cupping a hand over near my mouth to let the sound travel as I raced by.

I was determined to succeed!

This Amy needed confirmation that I was serious! This Amy had my heart leaping over bounds and wanting to tear itself from my chest and bound right after her.

But I had to play the charming hero now.

I had to play the game this time.

She was the object of my affections! I had to win her over!

It was… absolutely thrilling!

Once again, Amy was pulling me into her mischief and ‘ride or die’ activities again.

But this time-

I was tugging right back!

I heard something in the distance just then and skidded to a halt to turn my ear towards the sound.

“SOOOONNNIIICCC!!!” it sounded just like it did all those years ago. “YOU BETTER MEAN IT, OR DIE TRYING!”

I chuckled.

“I WON’T FORGIVE YOU THIS TIME!”

She probably would kill me if I didn’t mean every word.

I put my hands to my hips, lowering my head to hear any further messages scaling across the breeze.

“AND ONE MORE THING-!”

I smirked, knew it.

“I LOVE YOU TOO!!!”

Sweden Simulator 2017

A while ago, I mentioned picking up Profound Red, an adventure game whose title was clearly taken from Dario Argento's giallo meditation on gender constraints, Profondo Rosso, and whose launch icon was pulled from James Sunderland's mental depths. Unfortunately, the promises of these references did not deliver, but the game is such an unusual production that I thought I'd take an extended look at it.

The driving concept behind Profound Red seems to be: "hey, gang, we know code, we have a camera - let's get together and put on an adventure game!" The game environments consist of photographs of real locations from around the designers' hometown of Norrköping, Sweden; characters are acted out and voiced by apparent friends of the designers. The homemade approach continues right down to the method of sale: I purchased Profound Red not by visiting Steam or another storefront but by PayPaling the designers $12 and receiving a download link in my inbox several hours later.

While the prospect of Argento parallels pushed me into a purchase, it was actually this make-do, will-do attitude that drew me to this studio's work in the first place (first gleaned from a screenshot from a review of one of the developer's earlier titles, featuring an actress portraying a bedridden hospital patient but wearing full makeup: OK, I'll be in your computer game, but I'm not taking off my face for you). I unreservedly admire the gumption behind this production; the designers found a way to use the resources they had at hand to work in a field they apparently love. They've found success, too, as Profound Red is the 12th in its series. "Homemade" here doesn't denote jank, either; the photos are professionally composed and shot, and the technical side of the game runs quite smoothly.

Profound Red stars Sweden-dwelling English expat (and major classic adventure game enthusiast, judging from her bookshelves) Carol Reed, who here is summoned by her hotel-manager friend to investigate a suspicious suicide-note text from a recently-deceased guest. The trail leads to the dead woman's isolated country cabin, a derelict housing development abandoned after a rash of apparent poisonings, a downtown "motorbike basement" (that seems to house primarily non-motorized bikes), and other locations around Norrköping and its outskirts - but it focuses on the city's local swingers' club, where the woman was a frequent patron. Further investigation reveals that the owner was perhaps not privy to the complete range of activities taking place in his establishment.

As one might surmise, the club is where the "Profound Red" of the title is most prominently manifested. I was extremely disappointed, though, that the game takes nothing but one salient plot element from its Argento inspiration. Gialli deal in over-the-top visuals and lurid emotions, neither of which are really present in Profound Red; the designers apparently figured, "well, the plot centers around a sex club," and left it at that. The fan base seems sufficiently scandalized by finding enema bulbs and stim cream in examining the environment, with no deeper meditation on sexuality needed or sought. However, if your game invokes the name of Deep Red, a movie that's really invested in examining gender roles and sexuality, you have somewhat of a responsibility to take your treatment of this material beyond the tee-hee level.

We're left with what the developers wanted to accomplish via their strengths: photography and knowledge of their hometown. All the sets in Profound Red, of course, are real locations in Sweden, and the developers take care to include a few regional landmarks in each of their titles (here, a local museum, a city garden; even the sex club is an actual business). Some of the sights are photographed in close-up seemingly just because the photographer found them visually interesting and wanted to share them, be they local fixtures or happy, fleeting accidents - a friend's rabbit, sleeping it its little house-shaped hutch; a spiderweb artistically spun between the rails of a bridge, glistening in the sun; a trio of decorative boulders covered in an Argus's worth of hand-painted eyes. It seems as if the developers are in part using the adventure-game medium to document and share the history and sights of their hometown, which is an admirable goal and a truly unique use of gaming. It is this decidedly personal portrait that is the most striking aspect of Profound Red.

That touch permeates how the designers present their actors and the private residences they used for shooting. While the photos are clean & well-composed, it's also clear that the devs are working with friends, their homes, and the detritus of said friends' daily lives. The creators handle this, though, by letting the player in on the production to an extent. Click on the right places, and you can peek into closets to see the flotsam that had to be corraled to get the location into shooting condition. One of the developers apparently plays a role in each of the games as a running joke, as does a biker-like man in glasses known only as "Bigge," who has, based on forum reactions, evidently become a fan favorite. Series fans are revisiting not only characters, but actors, and Profound Red, to an extent, is about the process of making an adventure game. Given this candor, even the awkwardness many of the actors evince comes off as charmingly authentic, in a way, instead of off-putting - the product of friends' efforts rather than professional entertainers. The end product can at times be weird, but it's a forgivable, earnest-people-trying-their-best weird. Overall, it's instructive how Profound Red's producers have used familiarity and friendliness to turn weaknesses - a limited budget, amateur actors, a shooting location that triple-A gaming would dismiss as unglamorous - into strengths.

I'm coming off as more positive about Profound Red than I feel, though. The game has decided problems with puzzle design. The designers attempt to head off any gameplay trouble by including an in-game hint system that reveals the very next step in your investigation (but no more) with a couple clicks in the inventory menu. In theory, making direct help safely hidden but easily-accessible should work quite well: it caters to folks who might not be HARDCORE ADVENTURE GAMERS and are more invested in advancing the story, but it frees the designers to work out more involved riddles for those who do want a challenge. In practice, though, the presence of ready help is often taken as a license to play fast & loose with solid puzzlemaking: I frequently found myself stumped because I wasn't clicking in exactly the right place, and the use of certain items, such as the window cleaner, hems too close to cat-hair moustache territory. It's not across-the-board questionable by any means, but there were enough frustrating parts for me eventually to stop engaging with the puzzles and lean full-on into the hint system to get through the experience.

The other big mechanical sticking point is movement. The basic system is fine: locations are selected from a map and navigated via Myst-like clicking through a series of still images. There's only one entrance/exit per venue, though, and the game design frequently requires you to trek deep in and out of locations to pick up or use a single item, which weighs down Profound Red's pacing considerably. (A big long fetch-quest puzzle chain near the end of the title contributes mightily in this regard.) A "leave location instantly" option would help the tempo immensely here.

I'd like to talk about the story in-depth for a bit, particularly as it compares to Deep Red. Spoilers for both the game and movie lurk below the dark mirror of the soul below. You're safe when the comforting visage of Bigge appears!

OK, **SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS** ahead: When the mom appeared, I was dearly hoping that she would turn out to be the killer, and I was not disappointed in that regard. You even get the side bit about the son appearing for a short while to be the killer but in fact acting only to protect her. (Upon seeing that she was wearing a gold necklace, I was also hoping that that would be the method of her demise, but I suppose decapitations are a bridge too far for this series.)

As mentioned, though, that is the limit of the game's Argento influences; for all its invocation of deeper material, the game seems studiously to avoid any closer reflection on its own story. For example: how does Sven, the club owner, feel about everything that's happened? He and Louise, the victim, seemed to be close; Louise seemed genuinely to love him; she was, however, sabotaging his business for self-enrichment via a blackmail scheme. And how did Louise feel about that? Her history of confidence schemes speaks to an ingrained sociopathy, but we never address this contradiction in her character. Then there's the thread about criminal behavior running in the family, which seems to be a major part of the story but is left undeveloped. Yeah, I get the sense that the folks who follow this series aren't looking for deep introspection - but, well, the story elements are there. The designers had an opportunity to go psychological with their inspirations and explore the plotlines they set up, and it would have cost nothing but text...they just chose not to do so.

Profound Red leans hard and somewhat unwittingly into the adventure genre's underobserved wackiness, such as the plotline (played completely straight) revolving around hardcore skateboard forgery, or the blackmail note demanding Bitcoin as payment, or how, at one point, my inventory consisted of a ten-foot-tall ladder, a trampoline, and a packet of lube. What I remember more, though, are the actors, and the sights of Norrköping, and all the photos of soda bottles in closets. I connected with this setting and could relate it to my own everyday experiences and environment (hey, Swedes have those dumb signs about the lake, too!); the game gets its primary focus right. It's an interesting artifact - though your interest may be limited if you're looking for something beyond interesting.

Been eating real good the last few days.

4 days until i head home. I no longer have a scale (it got sent back with my other stuff) but i have lost at least 5kg up here.

When i step on the scale i hope ive broken into the 50kg bracket!!! Im looking forward to seeing all my friends and coworkers again and the warmer weather means i won't be hiding in a coat the whole time :)

Captain Britain Joining The MCU. Give Me Fucking Strength - Quill’s Scribbles

You know there are some points in my life where a person or a movie studio does something so stupid and moronic that my only response is... what the fuck are you doing?

DC, what the fuck are you doing?

Marvel, what the fuck are you doing?

Kevin Feige... what the fuck are you doing?!

Yes, apparently Marvel Studios are considering putting Captain Britain into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Something I’m sure every comic book fan in the land has been crying out for. Now I’m sure you’re wondering what I, a British person, may think of this. Do I feel patriotic? Proud that such a ‘beloved’ British icon is going to be part of the MCU?

Yeah, I can’t say I’m excited about the prospect and the reason is because... um... how do I put this?... Captain Britain is quite possibly the dumbest thing to ever come out of Marvel (and I’m including Howard The Duck).

Captain Britain was created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe to be the British equivalent of Captain America. But whereas Captain America took off and became a relatively integral part of the American comics industry, Captain Britain never had quite the same impact with us Brits. In fact in contrast with Captain America, he’s actually a very obscure character. While he does have his fans (very few fans), most people have either never heard of him or, like me, can’t stand the fucking sight of him, finding the character to be more patronising than patriotic.

There’s a number of reasons why Captain Britain never took off, but first let’s quickly sum up his backstory. Brian Braddock (smirk) was born into an aristocratic family in Essex and educated at Fettes College In Edinburgh. Because his family were no longer rich enough to fraternise with their academic peers, Brian was a quiet and lonely child because he was too proud to fraternise with the lower classes (and I’m sure we in the lower classes were eternally grateful for that, you stuck up git). After his parents, Sir James and Lady Elizabeth (oh I do beg your pardon) die in a laboratory accident, Brian gets a job at a nuclear facility at Darkmoor. When this facility is attacked by a terrorist, Brian gets on his motorcycle (a motorcycle? Oh come now! Surely that’s far too lower class for him. Shouldn’t he be riding a horse and cart? Pip, pip! Tally ho chaps! We’ll give the ruffians what for!) and goes looking for help only to then crash and get seriously injured (you had one job! That’s you off the Queen’s Christmas card list). He is then saved by Merlyn (yes, that Merlin) and is offered the chance to become Captain Britain. He’s asked to choose between the Amulet of Right (pffft) and the Sword of Might (tee hee). Brian chooses the amulet and he transforms into the champion of Great Britain, fighting for Queen and country and all that is pre-shrunk and cottony... Oh no, wait. That’s from Captain Underpants. Have you ever read Captain Underpants? It’s a brilliant series of books. Very funny. Did you know that DreamWorks are doing a movie adaptation? I’m very excited! :D

Now you may have noticed that I wasn’t really taking this seriously. And really, how could I? It sounds more like a parody of Captain America. But no. Apparently we’re supposed to be taking this very seriously. So come on. Let’s be serious about this for a moment. No! Stop sniggering! Control yourselves, please! This could very well be the next big thing in the MCU.

As I said, there are many reasons why Captain Britain never really took off. The most glaring example being how stereotypical it is. He comes from an aristocratic family. He went to a boarding school. It’s incredibly painful. He’s one step away from spending Sunday afternoons playing croquet in the grounds and sipping tea in the gazebo before retiring to his four poster bedroom where his butler will give him a glass of port as a nightcap and remind him to get up early in the morning so he won’t be late for a spot of fox hunting with the chaps from Grantham House. I mean Jesus Christ!

Another big reason why Captain Britain doesn’t work is because we don’t really have the same relationship to our flag and our country as the Americans do. Oh sure we can be patriotic on occasion, such as on remembrance days or royal events, but America takes it to a whole other level. Americans love their country. They love their flag. They’re proud to be Americans. To the point where they even have laws dictating how you should take care of your flag. You can actually get punished for not cleaning your flag properly. In some states it’s illegal to wash your flag in a washing machine because it’s disrespectful. That’s insane! Like... it’s just a piece of cloth! Calm down! Brits, generally speaking, don’t have that kind of relationship. In fact kind of the opposite. We often mock our country and view it with a certain amount of disdain. The only people who feel truly patriotic about Britain are the royalists and other such nutters. People who passionately believe that Britain is the best country in the world, who love the Royal family and harken back to the UK’s glorious yesteryears (which never actually existed). While both Captain America and Captain Britain are both equally dumb ideas, I can see why Americans would be drawn to Captain America. An American patriot who stands for American ideals and wears the American flag across his chest with pride. Captain Britain on the other hand, with his Union Jack and his Amulet of Right, is more likely to produce snorts of laughter from us Brits.

But I’ll say one thing for Captain America. It may be a stupid idea and he may talk as though he has the Declaration of Independence shoved firmly up his arse, but at least he doesn’t act all high and mighty or try to lord it over everyone else. No. He fights for the common man and that’s largely because he was a common man himself. A wimpy kid off the streets of Brooklyn determined to become a soldier and fight the Nazis, wanting to protect his country from injustice. His inner strength, good will and patriotism is what made him a prime candidate for the Vita-Ray experiment and he represents an aspirational figure that kids can look up to. Captain Britain is precisely not that. In fact he represents what the majority of Brits actually hate. An overly privileged, upper class prick who has great power bestowed onto him despite the fact that he’s done very little to actually deserve it.

And that’s by far the biggest problem with Captain Britain. As a character, he just doesn’t appeal to us Brits. He’s above us and he sees himself as above us. We don’t want to see that. If we wanted to see that, we’d just watch BBC Parliament. Let me give you an idea of the kind of characters we in the UK love:

Derek Trotter, more commonly known as Del Boy, was the main protagonist of the hugely successful sitcom Only Fools & Horses and is arguably one of the most beloved characters in British culture today. A market trader and con man who sells hooky gear on the streets of Peckham and often gets into trouble due to his get rich quick schemes.

Dave Lister, a vending machine repair man from the sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf. This lager drinking, curry loving slob ends up becoming the last surviving member of the human race and a Godlike figure to a new race of people that evolved from his pet cat. As the series progressed, he helped his robot Kryten break his programming and become fully independent, and it’s this that helps him to grow and mature to become the space hero he is now in the current series.

Victor Meldrew, from the sitcom One Foot In The Grave. A middle aged man forced into early retirement and having to find ways to pass the time, be it through peculiar hobbies or shouting at the weird events happening around him, much to the dismay of his wife Margaret.

Basil Fawlty, from the beloved sitcom Fawlty Towers, has become one of the most iconic characters in British culture. A traditionalist, right wing hotelier desperately seeking to raise his social status and to become successful, but is forced to work with people he absolutely despises, including his incompetent Spanish waiter Manuel.

Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet) is the main character of the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. Housewife to her eternally suffering husband Richard, she’s a pompous snob desperately seeking to maintain the illusion that she’s wealthier and more socially important than she actually is. However her attempts to climb the social ladder are often ruined by her working class sisters or her senile father.

And finally, just to bring this back into the realm of comic books there’s:

John Constantine. The chain smoking, working class magician from Liverpool who fights dark supernatural forces on a regular basis and frequently has to make morally dubious choices, often resulting in the deaths of his friends and loved ones.

Now what do all of these characters have in common? They’re all underdogs. Working class. Losers. Idiots. Failures. Those are the types of characters we’re drawn to as a culture. The reason why I included so many sitcom characters is because I feel they perfectly demonstrate the difference between British and American culture. America is brimming with idealism and aspiration. The idea that anyone can become greater than their humble origins, and this is reflected in their culture. In most American movies and TV shows and comic books, the main character is often smarter, wittier, tougher and/or funnier than the audience, representing someone they can aspire to be like. Here in Britain, where our rigid class system is permanently ingrained into us at an early age, we mostly accept the fact we’re likely going to stay where we’re at for the rest of our lives and so our media reflects that by giving us characters that are in similar situations to us. The reason we identify with the likes of Constantine and Lister and Del Boy is because they operate on our level and share our problems and worries. They’re one of us. When Basil Fawlty and Hyacinth Bucket arrogantly disregard their working class roots and try to raise their social status, it’s funny when they fail because serve them right for looking down on us. But when Del Boy eventually becomes a millionaire at the end, we’re legitimately happy for him because we like the character, we want to see him succeed and we’re glad he managed to succeed without compromising who he is. And that’s why Captain Britain will never be accepted by us. He is above us and has power over us and we don’t like that. People with power and authority are to be mocked and shamed, not to be celebrated or aspired to be like.

The idea that Kevin Feige is even considering putting Captain Britain into the MCU for me proves what I’ve been saying about Marvel all along. That they don’t care about creating a coherent or entertaining universe, that they’re adding characters and storylines just for the sake of adding characters and storylines, and that Kevin Feige clearly doesn’t have the slightest fucking idea of what he’s doing. If he did, he honestly wouldn’t think Captain Britain would be a profitable or worthwhile project to pursue. I also feel extremely annoyed by all of this. Remember when Feige said we were definitely going to see an LGBT+ superhero appear in the MCU at some point in the next ten years? Or just recently when he said we were totes going to see Miles Morales’ Spider-Man show up in the MCU at some point in the future? All of these vague half-promises constantly pushed back to make way for more ‘important’ projects like an Ant-Man sequel, an Inhumans TV series or Captain fucking Britain.

Regardless of what your thoughts are on the state of the MCU right now, I think we can all agree that when you get to the stage when you’re seriously considering Captain Britain as a legitimately good idea... maybe it’s time to take a break and reevaluate just what the fuck it is you’re actually doing.
