You like Sondheim? His early work was a little too Rodgers and Hammerstein for my taste. But when Sweeney Todd came out in '79, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a boost. He's been compared to Andrew Lloyd Webber, but I think Stephen has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '23, Thomas Kail released this; Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a full scale revival of the original text and score, complete with a 26-piece orchestra for the first time since 1982. I think the undisputed masterpiece is "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about Sweeney's personal reputation! It's also a Shakespearean chorus and a warning in the form of a prologue about the story, the tragedy even that's about to unfold before our eyes. Hey Paul!

A lot of the more 'drastic' effects that I got within the first few months of HRT have mostly subsided.

But one thing that seems to be 'staying' is that I can giggle myself into a laughing-fit the likes of which I and my friends have never seen. "Are you laughing or crying?" is a phrase I hear at least once a week, and which goes unanswered for a good several minutes before I'm able to regain my composure (the answer typically being 'both' by that point).

Being happy is cool :>

every time i see a narrator interact with another narrator i give them different voices in my head. As opposed to giving the same cannon narrator voice. Because i can't imagine them all with the same voice.

AS SOMEONE WHO DOES THE SAME THING, i often have to reel myself back & acknowledge that ALL of these fuckers ( assumedly ) sound like the exact same man - so it's just kevan brighting on loop for 10+ hours cursing himself out,

BUT I AM CURIOUS. if so you have any voices you associate with any narrators in particular; GENERALLY SPEAKING, but also... mmine...

Anne Rice on writing TVL:

A teacher in college had once said about a short story she [Anne] had written that it was a failure but more interesting than most successes. "That's the way I feel about Lestat. I think it's a very interesting failure, and it's more valuable than many successes - I hope. I'm proud of the book. What makes it succeed is his personality and his character."

She was talking about TVL being, in her opinion, "a very badly structured book" with a flawed ending. Which I think is so interesting! Especially bearing in mind how TVL is generally regarded as an all-time fandom favorite nowadays -- I've seen many people say it's her best VC novel (it's hard to measure this one objectively because at least for myself, I know I tend to conflate 'best' with 'my personal favorite').

There's a lot that I take from Anne on writing and I just love the idea of still celebrating an "interesting failure." And I think it's something we can apply to our own creative pursuits and still be proud of our work and find the successes in it, even if it's not "perfect"!

Steelheart Redux hits like all my favorite buttons. Dragons, mental/physical connection between human and dragon, kinda dystopian from what I’ve read, and potentially some god fuckery. (Also sorry for the ask-spam, let me know if it’s too much!)

1: you do NOT need to apologize oh my god. please. people asking me abt these ocs is like catnip i literally never do not want to talk about them

2: IM GLAD!! and honestly yeah same LOL. tbh the dystopia is... kind of understated. like it's not... super overt most of the time, at least outside of a certain setting, but that's kind of the point? it's hard to explain without spoiling a lot. i really need to finish plotting it so i can start the god damn comic, jesus....

(and side note: unfortunately god fuckery got smooshed down for story simplicity, but it is still EXTREMELY apparent in a certain character who still kind of fills the same role he did when he was a god slash ambiguously powerful supernatural entity.)

i haven't abandoned this blog or anything, sorry for the unannounced disappearance!

lately i was struggling to really find the energy to sit down and write, && decided since i couldn't, i'd just throw my attention into other things and take a lil break. so i've been playing video games, hanging out with friends, and focusing writing the smaller, less stressful stuff on discord && it helped a lot.

plus, i picked back up learning Japanese & Chinese, as well i'm learning how to draw like i've always wanted. i'm also putting a lot of energy into my waning health; it finally feels like i'm getting somewhere with it too.

basically i've just been focusing on other stuff, doing things that make me happy and it's slowly brought me out of that weird, creative rut i was in.

i should be back to writing starting next week!

&& if anyone's curious, i've further upgraded my gamer room and i'm healing my inner child. when i tell you the amount of sheer joy i've had since acquiring all this stuff, and how much happier it's made me....

got my taxes back yesterday and added the ps2 to my collection. i now have two devices that are backwards compatible w/ playing ps1 games hehe. yes i did buy a bunch of crash bandicoot games bc inner kid me missed those terrible ps2 & ps1 graphics LMAO
