shirahama-sensei reminded me she has a thing for the teacher from pokemon s/v so i randomly went off on an au where qifrey is the professor. etc
#witch hat tag#orufrey#the first image is qifrey dressed as that guy. i'm glad she has an inexplicable attachment to some dorky pokemon man like i do#someone was like 'wouldn't it make more sense for deanreldea to be the champion' .... well no. not in my world .#it maps onto magic skill. champions aren't like the Rulers of the land they're just the most skilled at this thing#oru as a burnt out champion who's gently encouraging a kid like coco to reach him one day means a lot to me. i like pokemon narratives#agott went shiny hunting for the same thing coco had but cooler - just to impress her. she really is a pokemon rival type girl#pushing myself to the limit to prove my worth to you - to get to the summit first so i'm waiting for you..#and then realising it wasn't just to be strong - i realised i started wanting to see your smile. i wanted you to have fun.#i think coco would defeat agott at the end of victory road and then defeat oru & i'll probably draw one last thing abt that at least..#the image is very cinematic..the dialogue and music in my mind..I WANT TO FACE ORU!!!!!!!!!!#the super cool insanely powerful awesome champion is the spouse of my professor and he gave me advice at the beginning...no way....#btw the elite four would be the sages which is perfect (and maybe easthies as the first guy?) evil Team Brimhats#coustas as their renegade gladion-type figure. the gym leaders would be like sun/moon and s/v combined#travelling around facing the best students from different classes - so jujy and eunie etc.#i've barely thought about 'teams' or anything bc i care amore about the narrative side of things always lol#but idk. tetia with a swirlix - eunie would be ghost type boy - riche with small things but also a ceruledge or a steelix something massiv#and brushbug would have a final form which is really long like an eastern dragon- fluffy and with wings like a fairy. It's beautiful to me#well anyway *tries to move on to the rest of life now the brief obsession has passed*#obviously oru would be fire-type tho and qifrey would be water-type and they set off together and traded their starters etc.....it goes on

false i would also love it if you made Pokémon teams for the cast of wha. I can show them to my baby bro and get him more interested at the thing I like (wha) thru the thing he likes (Pokémon)
a worthy cause! i’m on it🫡
pokemon teams for the cast of witch hat atelier
tetia: swablu, togepi, ralts
i really wanted a pokemon to represent her cloud magic and swablu was just perfect. the entire togepi evolution line screams tetia to me (togetic is the “happiness pokemon” and tetia likes magic that makes people happy... it just works <3) and i think she would absolutely be drawn to a cute little togepi. also, i just think fairy types seem very her? same reason for ralts!! one of it’s pokedex entries says that it’s drawn to people with a cheery disposition.
richeh: amaura, hatenna, rockruff
amaura is pretty so i think she would like it for the reason. it’s also kind of my way of replicating the crystal magic she likes. rockruff because it’s evolution (midday lycanroc) reminds me of a scalewolf. i would have just given her a lycanroc but i like the idea of all the girls having basic pokemon.
agott: noctowl, meowth, shuppet
i did give agott one (1) evolved pokemon. i actually had a little trouble with it but i do like the ones i decided on for her!! shuppet especially seems really fitting. i did specifically pick noctowl and meowth because of that one cute art of her with with an owlcat <3 (meowth specifically because i can see her family having lots of persians too)
coco: furret, eevee, buneary
i really like her having normal type pokemon seeing as how her magic style is very simple and i think it goes really well with how she used to be an unknowing. furret is an evolved pokemon but she actually found and befriended it out in the wild. it kinda reminds me of brushbug so i think it's perfect for coco.
olruggio: chandelure, emboar, vulpix, magmar, torkoal, stoutland
he specializes in fire magic so it’s mostly fire pokemon! i had fun picking these out but i didn’t necessarily put as much thought into it as i did the girls.
i like vulpix because one of it’s pokedex entires says that it feels slightly warm when held which reminds me of the snugstone. (also just love the idea of olruggio with a vulpix... very cute) chandelure seems especially fitting because he’s known as the light witch. stoutland is his only non-fire type pokemon, i think it works well since he's the watchful eye. a nice protective pokemon to help him look over qifrey and the girls. he's had it since it was a lillipup.
qifrey: slowking, milotic, dragonite, chansey, decidueye, espeon
okay so... this was actually kind of hard because i was going back and forth on whether to give him water types. his specialty is water magic but he doesn't like water either. then i figured that his reasoning for having some water pokemon could be the same reasoning he had for specializing in water magic.
i actually don't know how happy i am with his which is why i'm not going to go more in detail about my choices. even if i do rework his team, i'll probably keep milotic. it reminds me of him.

WHA’s worldbuilding : a society in which magic exists can still be flawed
Sexual predators, social inequalities, corruption, poverty, war, famine... “magic can erase those... right?”
I gotta say I am loving so much that Shirahama-sensei chose to depict in her story the point of view that, no, the existence of magic in a universe doesn’t magically make everything perfect, because only people can work to make society better.
As such, the current arc of WHA that is starting to culminate is extremely dark on several aspects. In itself, this arc gathers the many proofs in the story so far that the witches’ system is quite flawed and that the ones who suffer the most from it are the children, be they witches or not. Yet, it seems we’re slowly starting to see some changes that could imply a rather positive ending to this arc.
For example, the new Sage of Friendship who spoke up, because the old one was corrupt...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or Lulucy’s backstory and her finding a place amongst a group of witches who fight against what she, amongst others, had to live through.
Same about Ririfin, who’s now an aide to Beldarut: it seems Riché’s demise eventually opened his eyes and he testified against his previous master.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These examples make me think that, even with such system, maybe not all is lost for Coustas, a normal boy with next to nothing, whose path recently took a dark turn super fast.
Truly, he’s the unfortunate embodiment of all the examples in which magic can never become a definite solution tohis issues (because witches don’t act on man-made problems such as poverty and bandit attacks, like the ones who attacked him and Dagda recently + medicine and magic are, by law, inconciliable), even though he needs its help the most.
Therefore his anger at the system in place is quite understandable...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as is his decision to change his fate with the power of forbidden magic:
Tumblr media
However, as I said, no matter how dark the predicament, I want to believe that he’ll eventually manage to be saved from forbidden magic and become another exception of the magic community, just like Coco?
After all, it’s a good lesson to promote through this arc that victims of forbidden magic should be protected instead of punished for being victims, especially children.
So Coustas eventually being protected by the magic community would imply that other children who are (or will be) victims of forbidden magic (such as Eunie++ and, who knows, maybe Ininia) could also still have a place to come back to, instead of having to run away to save themselves.
Additionally, erasing Coustas’ memories would have a really negative impact on Coco’s and Tartar’s personal paths, since they too question the strict laws around the Secret...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...And we know Coco was already extremely close in the last arc from choosing a different path, had Qifrey’s answer to her fear been different, so it makes sense that adult witches would better try to help Coustas, otherwise Coco will keep on spiralling down until she probably chooses Iguin’s side.
Honestly, I don’t know what you guys think but Beldarut seems like a good candidate for eventually taking Coustas under his wing?
I mean, the guy taught Qifrey who was a child experimented on by the Brim Hats and he recently asked Coco to become his apprentice so that he could protect her. Besides, he’s a disabled but extremely powerful witch, so it would make for a nice imagery, since Coustas is also a broken and disabled young boy who really had no real chance in life so far.
Tumblr media
Oh and I’m thinking that, since Tartar is also looking for a master and has an eye affliction, he could study along with Coustas under someone who would understand in what way they are different and thus what they need. We’re not there yet at all obviously, but I’m trying to think positive otherwise this arc will destroy me with feels.
Lastly, I wonder about the young prince’s recent involvement in this arc. It’s not clear yet whether he’s the current king’s son or younger brother, but since he’s got a brushbug with him (a black one, how cute), I wonder exactly how much he knows about magic (since brushbugs are attracted to magic ink)?
Tumblr media
So what is it gonna be? If he already found out that magic can actually be drawn by anyone, does this mean that the magic community will have to carefully weigh the pros and cons of erasing the kingdom prince’s memories? Not sure this would bode well, politically speaking. So this could force witches to carefully examine which cases need their memory erased vs who needs protection and magic education from now on.
Or maybe the prince is just supposed to be a witness in the king’s stead, though? Because, as we can see, clearly magic on its own cannot solve everything and it’s also up to monarchs and kings to protect and improve life in the Zoza Peninsula.
That’s about it. Amazing chapters and I can’t wait for more!
Don’t hesitate to let me know what you think!
It’s an amazing manga, please give it a try!

How far are you in Witch Hat Atelier? who's your favourite?
I’ve read as many chapters as have been translated! (31 I believe?) I adore it and really hope that they adapt it into an anime--it’d be perfect for that medium, I feel, even though I’m glad it’s a manga because I prefer manga as a medium. It’s whimsical and fun, thought-provoking (I’m surprised to learn it’s seinen, but then again maybe I shouldn’t be that surprised), has great themes and a hopeful view of the world despite some very dark events. The characters are wonderful, and I’m loving that the main characters are mostly women and an important character thus far (and I think she will continue to be important) is a black woman. I don’t often see that in manga.
My favorite is the brushbug.
Tumblr media
Ahem. My favorite real character is Agata/Agott/however her name is translated. I like how much she foils Coco, who’s a good lead, and how she is developing from minor antagonist to deuteragonist in her own right. She’s kind of the yin to Coco’s yang in a lot of ways.
Tumblr media
I can’t wait to see more of her and how her foiling with Coco will be explored more. I also think their teacher potentially foils both her and Coco, and I want to see where that’s going to go as well. All three of them (plus the other two girls) are outcasts in a sense, and one of my favorite themes of the manga is its treatment of the “othering” of people so. I’m intrigued.
