"Padayon Dean’s List Awardees!"
Issue #13 by Precious Fernandez
Tumblr media
The College of Education, Arts, and Sciences Student Council of National University recently hosted the Dean’s List award held last May 13, 2023.  The awarding ceremony was organized to celebrate the academic excellence of the Dean’s List achievers of the 3rd semester of the school year 2021-2022 and the 1st semester of the school year 2022-2023.  Due to the high number of achievers, the awards were divided into eight batches in accordance with their program. Although the program met an unforeseen circumstance causing a short delay nonetheless, the ceremony went on as planned.
Dr. Leo S. Del Rosario gave a cordial introductory remark to formally begin the recognition. Following the ceremony, the program chairs of the various courses, including Professor Denson R. Acomular for the Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Ma'am Domelyn Adolfo for the Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies, as well as officers of the Psychology Society, Miss Maria Luciel Ann Cornejo, Yna Cerbo Bato-Ampo and Hannah Cabral, sincerely congratulated the awardees on their accomplishments.  The Chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group and the Founding Dean of the De La Salle College of Law, Attorney Jose Manuel Tadeo “Chel” Diokno, offered his heartfelt congratulations. “Your achievements are the fruit of all the hard work and devotion that you have given to your studies. I hope you continue to excel in your respective courses as you pursue your dream of a better life not just for yourself but [for] your loved ones as well”, he urged.
Tumblr media
The recipients of the Dean's List honor are subsequently given certificates as part of the award ceremony. The College of Education, Arts, and Sciences Student Council President, Feejay Nario, presented a motivational speech to the awardees to conclude the ceremony. The officials and committees of CEASSC did their utmost to make the awards happen and for the achievers to be recognized for their work despite the lack of financial support. The ceremony was fulfilling and a proud moment for students, staff, and the entire academic community, despite the delay.
The CEAS student council once again would like to extend sincere congratulations to all the students who made it to the Dean's List this semester, and keep up the excellent work! Padayon!

Sunggod kunta ako. Pero anyway.

History writing is on the bottom of the list in this irrelevant town. But what follows, in the spirit of immortalization, is the vagueness of Maharlika Tribe's history.
This is not an attempt to change what's written. While I am sitting alone in this coffee shop, I will try to record what were heard from who are still living, in between bottles of Tanduay. Most of them are old, and exact dates are not very important to them. What matters to them is, Maharlika is still standing, older than me - even after years of trials.
In Dumga, it was said by Nong Rodel Taladro (Sitio Ilaya) that in around 1975 or 1976, Mr. Gil "Tay Junior" Casimero (Sitio Centro) and Mr. Eli Fradejas (+) (Sitio Ilawod) decided to start an ati-atihan tribe following their AWOL from the army. The name they chose was Vikings.
Previously, it was an affairs of the sitios in Dumga - between Centro and Tabok. In Tabok, there was a tribe called something like Red-whatever. It was then that they involved Punong Barangay Manuel "Tay Maning" Tamayo (+) (Sitio Centro) and others.
In a post of Ms. Anna Tamayo (Sitio Centro) in Facebook in January 21, 2023, the officers of Vikings were:
Founder & Manager: MANUEL TAMAYO
President: GIL CASIMERO
Vice President: MARVEL MABINI
Secretary: MAGDALENA SANTIA
Tresurer: ROSARIO TAMAYO
Auditor: IMELDA TOCOL
Designers: ELI FRADEJAS (1975-1977) & MASINITO TESORERO
Sgt. at Arms: JUANITO CASIMERO, JOVILO TOCOL, GORGONIO TOCOL, JUANITO BAYLON & LEODEGARIO ESCALONA
Adviser: PIOLOGO TABERNILLA
I grew up knowing that Maharlika used to be called Vikings. My mother said that because they were undefeated, they had to change the name to Maharlika. But in Anna's post, she said that, Vikings was changed to Maharlika in 1981 because Makato Parish Council (which no longer exists) banned foreign-sounding names. Also, she said that it was Mr. Piologo Tabernilla (+) (Poblacion) who gave the name Maharlika.
But according to Nong Rodel, Piologo chose the name The Living Skull. It didn't sound right so they sought the help of Mrs. Tarciana "Tati" Mationg (+) (Sitio Centro). He said that, in one of the books of Mr. Jesus "Tay Odoy" Raval (+) (Sitio Centro), Tati found the prescious word, Maharlika - a noble warrior, in our own Filipino language. Thus, who we became and who we remained to be.
That was the past. Several things happened. I remember Maharlika was never defeated except for that one time. I was in elementary. It was Tribu Timawa, in my memory. But to Nong Rodel and the rest, it was blurry, whom Maharlika lost. That was the time I remembered they stopped joining ati-atihan. Talk about panaad. But there probably was more to the story.
In 1999, I was in my freshman year in Science. I remember Mr. Hark Tesorero (Sitio Centro) talking to my mother, Mrs. Adelia Taluyo (+) (Sitio Centro) in our living room. He talked about reviving Maharlika. My mother would manage, he would design. Other Dumgahanons joined the cause. Nearing Christmas, they performed daigon for fund-raising. Other members and leaders returned, including the Casimero brothers. Tay Junior and Mr. Efren "Tay Ely" Casimero (Sitio Ilawod) led and danced, and Mr. Jose "Nong Joe" Casimero (+) (Sitio Ilaya), joined in the design. By 2000, Maharlika was back.
Why Hark chose my mother, I do not know. But it was a short-lived friendship. You see, Dumga used to be a relatively peaceful community. But in 2002, Hark's brother ran for Sangguniang Kabataan under the banner of then Mayor Wayne Malilay. My mother made the mistake of making me run for the same position, in the other party. Hence the start of a chaotic society - street lights and other projects were damaged, our house was battered with rocks (no TP or eggs). I got to say, the resentment and strong brotherhood of Tesorero brothers is admirable - the whole Tocol family, in fact.
The banner we design every year was from years back. It was made of plywood and wood, stronger now from layers of paint. It probably weighs fifty kilograms with all the added decorations. I was not exactly sure when it was made but my mother said, it was from way before 2000. It was probably really old. I remember Hark asking my mother if he could get the banner and handle Maharlika. By this time, Tay Maning was old and fragile and Maharlika remained in my mother's leadership. Further adding to injury, she would not concede. Nong Joe Casimero remained the sole designer of Maharlika until his death in 2019.
In 2004, Mrs. Vide Pamatian (Poblacion) asked my mother to sponsor Maharlika under Chowking Kalibo. This was the first serious chance of Maharlika to join Kalibo Ati-atihan - full expenses paid, including cycling shorts, would you belive? They all have said, Maharlika had a chance in winning in Kalibo but it was never attempted.
Maharlika became the first tribe to defeat Kabog and the first non-local to win the competition. Kabog never recovered since. Maharlika never won again, too.
Following the death of my mother, Nong Joe handled Maharlika. As of this writing, Mrs. Luchi "Nene" Torneo (Sitio Ilawod) handles the finances and her husband and banner-bearer, Mr. Ruben Torneo (Sitio Ilawod) officially handles the tribe. He attends meetings and other related activities.
Mr. Armando Taladro (Sitio Ilaya) handles the drums. The households of Nong Rodel, Mrs. Mila Bumagat and Torneo compound could only make 80 costumes per year which was a minimum really. They could probably finish 150 and the dancers just keep on coming, from all over Aklan - in Numancia, Tangalan and Nabas. The drummers are 50.
It is no longer between sitios Centro and Tabok. Even if I talk about panaad, every competition is always just about between Vikings and Maharlika. Of course we would have wanted that million bucks. But even if we didn't, we are not bitter, and we would join again. The feud would continue for generations and I would love to see it through, but nothing is forever.
Still, this banner will stand.

Living to Write their Stories
Living to Write their Stories - What Lin-Manuel Miranda and other Hamilton cast members got up to after the big gig #fromtheblog
Tumblr media
By now, Hamilton’s meteoric rise from Broadway musical to cultural phenomenon fills many-a-page from magazine articles to blog posts to Instagram accounts. Its singular effect was solidified last year as the Kennedy Center decided to award the musical an unheard-of special Honors for being such a groundbreaking work of art.
What remains unfathomable – even more unfathomable than the runaway…

recommendations for filipino books? classics and more contemporary ones
Ah, the dreaded question. I am hesitant to recommend books that I haven't personally read yet, and to be honest I have read so few. Most of what I read are from anthologies and Internet scavenging.
For "classic" books, I've only really read
Noli Me Tangere, and
El Filibusterismo by Jose Rizal
So that's all I can recommend. Much of my country's pre-colonial everything Literature were destroyed or just in the recent years being rediscovered thanks to colonialism (and tbh are pretty hard to have access to especially if you're not in the academia).
For 20th Century to contemporary ones, not everything are books per se, and these are all random, but works on top of my head are:
Dead Stars by Paz Marquez Benitez (short story)
May Day Eve by Nick Joaquin (short story)
Midsummer by Manuel Arguilla (short story)
Tinubuang Lupa by Narciso Reyes (short story)
Walang Panginoon by Deogracias Rosario (short story)
Loverboy by Lilia Pablo Amansec (short story) also cw for necrophilia
The Bread Of Salt by NVM Gonzalez (short story)
The Complete Poems of Angela Manalang-Gloria*
Ladlad: An Anthology of Philippine Gay Writing*
Gapo by Lualhati Bautista*
Killing Time in A Warm Place by Jose Dalisay Jr.*
Hush Harbor: Poems by Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta*
Legend of the Seafoam by J. Neil C. Garcia (poetry) also, fave
The World is An Apple by Alberto Florentino (drama)
Ang Bayan Sa Labas ng Maynila by Rosario Cruz-Lucero*
Accidents Of Composition by Merlinda Bobis*
Dark Hours and elsewhere held and lingered by Conchitina Cruz*
A Question of Heroes and Culture and History by Nick Joaquin
Viajero and Ermita by F. Sionil Jose
Any and all Likhaan Anthology you can find (because that's where I start myself)
Some books that I haven't read yet but are on my reading list therefore I can recommend them:
Luha ng Buwaya by Amado V. Hernandez*
Smaller and Smaller Circles by FH Batacan*
Alitaptap sa Gabing Madilim by Lualhati Bautista*
Also, everything on the blog under #books I can recommend.
I hope this helps. And please add your recommendations, too! Would love to see it!

Clubcamping | The legend of Pedro Rodríguez | Director's Cut from Clubcamping on Vimeo.
Racing driver Pedro Rodríguez was one of a kind, a legend in Latin America, and an idol to Porsche fans all over the world. And not only because he was a crazy skilled driver: he made history driving the iconic Porsche 917k, which we can only assume was based on a discarded Batmobile design deemed too unrealistic.
Fifty years after his tragic demise while racing in Germany, we teamed up with The Community and Porsche to honor some of his feats.
Crank up the volume and get ready for a 60-second trip at 300 km/h.
This is our director's cut version for: The Legend of Pedro Rodríguez!
Let’s start by saying we were granted unprecedented creative freedom in this project by both the agency and the client.
But even before the slightest idea came to our minds, we knew one thing for sure: we needed the car to look perfect in 2D. Animating the Porsche 917k frame by frame, without a reference, sounded like the premise of the next Saw movie, so we decided that a 3D model of the car to produce some sweet 3D layouts was a fundamental asset to get our hands on.
To build Pedro’s world we thought about ‘60s and early ‘70s graphic design, movies, cartoons and tv shows, and discussed with Juan what pop culture and art milestones had left a mark on our styles. We agreed we wanted an overall vintage vibe but with modern visuals and animation ideas that would challenge our craft.
“Speed Racer meets Akira” was our pitch.
In a process we like to call “blind parkour design”, we started importing materials into After Effects and mixing it to see what happy accidents we encountered.
Jumping from After, to Animate, to Photoshop, to C4D, trying things out, not thinking whether something might work or not but simply doing it. Letting our subconscious sublimate. An intense animatic process ensued, where tons of new ideas and references kept flowing and popping up spontaneously.
We wanted the animation timing to feel a little limited, but with lots of super-sharp poses and eases. We chose to work at 24fps and its multiples, focusing mainly on animating in 3s, with 4s and 1s as extremes.
The comp was going to be extra heavy—we knew it and wanted it to be that way. Lots of glows, defocus, and grain. But the hardest comp ever was the one with the oil monster. It required a tremendous amount of coordination, organization and patience, constantly going back and forth between layout, animation, cleanup and comp. That shot alone took about a whole month to produce.
We promise you everything was under painful control.
One last thing you might be wondering: what about the square format, with rounded edges? We worked in a 2202 x 2202 1:1 format so as to easily come up with different versions later. The idea all along was to deliver a 16:9 format. As we went on, new details and compositions increasingly made sense when displayed in 1:1. We sat on it a little, and then El Señor Rodriguez himself inspired the final touch: what if we added a nice frame with rounded corners, giving it a lovely super-8 vibe like the footage of Pedro we were already showing at the end?
That was the last touch. The vintage vibe was exactly what we needed to close the circle.
We raise our cups to Pedro and what his star at 300km/h might bring us.

Riddle me this, if Lin manuel miranda is such a big LGBTQ+ ally, then how come he never puts queer characters in his works? The first queer character he made (as of my knowledge) was Lincoln Rosario. Originally, lincoln was supposed to be Nina's older gay brother who was an aspiring young musician. He just so happened to have a crush on benny. There was gonna be a love triangle and all the jazz. Then, lin saw Avenue Q and decided to get rid of Lincoln because, "it was too similar of a story to a story in Avenue Q." So naturally, i looked this shit up. Now I've never seen/listened to Avenue Q so take this with a grain of salt. But according to Wikipedia there is one gay character in Avenue Q. He works at Wall Street, is closeted, and has a crush on his roommate. Now, idk bout you, but that sounds nothing like lincoln. The next gay relationship that lin passed on was Sonny and Pete. Sonny, is Usnavi's younger cousin who's "best friends" with the neighborhoods very own delinquent. Not only are these 2 boys very intimate, but in the "original" script Lin said that the 2 boys were ment to kiss. He ultimately decided that this wasn't the way to go. In the end, the only gay representation we got in in the heights was
"he's in bed with Jose, from the liquor store."
"No me diga!"
(also note that the actor who played sonny in the obc was an out gay man. So was "the condom guy")
There was no gay rep in 21 chump street.
There was no gay rep hamilton.
So now we've circled back to in the heights. Lin confirmed that Dani and Carla would be a gay couple in the movie. I love a good lesbian relationship but I can't help but wonder why he chose these two to be gay instead of Sonny and Pete, who already had a following. If it was because the age of the characters, he could have easily made Pete younger or Sonny older to make it work. But what did he do? he made sure that Sonny was casted as a 14 year old boy and the graffiti Pete was casted out of 25 year old man. Therefore, we can no longer ship Sonny and Pete when it comes to the movie because now it's pedophilia. Again, i can't help but wonder why he made this decision when he had once tweeted out a link to a fanfiction for this couple. If you ship them like you claim lin, they why are they not cannon in the movie?
Am i saying LMM is Homophobic? Nope.
Am i saying what he('s) did/does/doing is bad? Nope.
What I'm saying is don't claim to be a huge Ally when you haven't done shit. Tbh, I don't even think he's donated money to queer causes.
Please stop saying people are allies because they're not homophobic. Please stop claiming to be an ally just because you're not homophobic. The only thing that this man has ever done for our community it say "love is love is love" and write a song with Jeniffer López about pride. Can we stop praising people for doing the bare minium? ESPECIALLY CISHET MEN??

"Chel Diokno on Leadership Webinar: Get Justice for Everyone!"
Issue #04 by Precious Fernandez
A 2-day leadership webinar on Justice System and the Filipinos and Transformational Leadership amidst the Attacks on Activism was organized by the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences (CEAS) Student Council of National University last October 11 and October 12. Attorney Jose Manuel "Chel" Diokno, a former senatorial candidate, human rights lawyer, and chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group, was invited to speak on the first day of the leadership training.
Tumblr media
To officially start the program,  Dean Leo S. Del Rosario of the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences extended warm greetings to the audience and offered inspirational remarks. Dean Leo also left behind words that encapsulate a true leader. "Overcoming the crisis makes one a leader", he emphasized. Following that, Ulyson Buere, President of the CEAS Student Council, introduced the event's speaker, Attorney Chel Diokno.
With the theme "The Filipino and the Criminal Justice System: Injustices among the Poor and Marginalized," Atty. Chel discussed the problems with the justice system and what should be done to fix them. The length of time it takes to resolve cases in our nation is the first problem with the justice system, according to Atty. Chel. Further, this occurs because there is a lack of judges that will preside over the court and not everyone is aware of this situation. Furthermore, he mentioned the Philippines' low conviction rate that contributes to the issues of the justice system. With a conviction rate of 25%, only one offender is convicted out of four injustice offenses. “It is not the severity of the punishment but the certainty of it”, he added. Last but not least, the closed system is one of the problems with the judicial system, where ordinary people have no understanding of how the law works, and only lawyers, legal professionals, and law students understand the law. Chel advocates legal education for everyone to give knowledge about the law.
Tumblr media
Atty. Chel Diokno discussed the problems with the legal system in a simple and concise manner. Everyone was able to understand what he said when he presented the facts, views, and ideas surrounding these subjects. In order to address these issues, he urged everyone to bring up the justice system on various platforms and make it a priority at the federal level. He urged the audience to force leaders to be part of the national agenda in order for them to hold accountable for these issues.
Afterward, he ended the discussion with these words, “We all should have the right to reach our full potential and we can only do that if there is accountability and empowerment in our country.” In addition, he answered the questions of the audience and defined the great attribute of a true prosecutor by achieving justice for all and who deserves it.

Bulacan
Bulacan is known as the city of heroes, why? Because most of the heroes lived there and approximately worked there. The early people of Bulacan, had also risen in revolt as in other parts of the country. Bulacan was one of the eight provinces, which rallied behind the Katipunan's call for an all-out insurrection against the Spanish occupation in the late 19th century. Marcelo H. Del Pilar (Kupang, San Nicolas, Bulakan), the "Great Propagandist" of the Philippine Propaganda Movement. General Gregorio del Pilar (San Jose, Bulakan), Marcelo H. del Pilar's nephew, one of the youngest revolutionary generals during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine–American War, died at the Battle of Tirad Pass. Mariano Ponce (Baliuag), physician, Propagandist Pío Valenzuela (Polo), physician, Katipunan leader, established Katipunan branches in Morong and Bulacan; co-founded "Kalayaan", the Katipunan newsletter; emissary of Andrés Bonifacio to José Rizal. Trinidad Tecson (San Miguel de Mayumo), female Katipunan revolutionary. Felipe Buencamino, Sr. (San Miguel de Mayumo),revolutionary, co-writer of the Constitution of the Philippine Republic at Malolos. Commodore Ramon A. Alcaraz (Plaridel), World War II veteran - Captain of Q-boat 112 ABRA Shot down 3 Japanese Zero fighters Gat Ciriaco Contreras (Meycauayan). Defended the Barrio of Langka and commanded the katipuneros of year 1898 against the spaniards, one of the foundations of Bulacan alongside the Supremo Gat Andres Bonifacio. Also one of the Commanding Officers of the Supremo.
The office of the heroes are indigenously made which are made by rocks and it is known and called "Biak na Bato" , During the Philippine Revolution in 1897, newly appointed Governor-General Fernando Primo de Rivera decided to crush Emilio Aguinaldo and his troops in Cavite, but Aguinaldo fled to Batangas and joined forces with Gen. Miguel Malvar. The Spaniards continue their pursuit but the troops outwitted them by going to the province of Morong (now Rizal) and finally to Biak-na-Bato in San Miguel, Bulacan. Aguinaldo made the mountain caves into his headquarters. Biak-na-Bato (21.17 km² in the villages of Kalawakan and Talbak in Doña Remedios Trinidad town and the villages of Biak-na-Bato and Sibul) served as one of the camps of the revolutionary Katipunan forces during the Philippine Revolution. It was declared a national park by Manuel L. Quezon on Nov. 16, 1937 through Proclamation No. 223. Since I lived there for years, I've discovered tons of beauty in that city including "Banal na Bundok" where saints and spiritual beings are adequately explained omnipotently where lots of people visits there for a peaceful life and an astounding future. Hundreds of rivers are abundant of clean water and forest that can make you chill by the fresh air that the trees are giving into. According to the leaders of the city, The municipality of San Miguel de Mayumo was established in 1763 by Carlos Agustin Maniquiz, Maria Juana Puno - wife of Carlos Agustin Maniquiz and Miguel Pineda, with Pineda as the first town mayor of San Miguel. Miguel Pineda was a native of Angat, Bulacan who decided to settle permanently in the barrio of San Bartolome (now named Barangay Tartaro). He found the place ideal for hunting and was later chosen as the leader of other settlers. He formed an alliance with Mariano Puno, the recognized leader of the adjacent prosperous village called Santo Rosario (now named Barangay Mandile). The town was previously part of Pampanga, hence San Miguel’s culture having Kapampangan influence. In 1848, the town and the neighbouring barrios, which were then part of Pampanga, were added to the territory of the Province of Bulacan.
