pet peeve: when people call octavio a king or noble of any kind. because there is zero evidence he's anything of the sort.
his jpn title explicitly calls him shogun general, and this isn't hidden information, it's right out there in splat1. while you CAN be nobility and a shogun, typically these two things are explicitly separate people. the shogun holds genuine power as military leader and the emperor is more of a figurehead for the people.
"but he has a crown--" it's a decorated samurai helmet. and arguably there's that kinda golden sheen to elite takozones so gold could be a status symbol like kelp is. but it's definitely not a crown.
he's the acting military leader and de facto head honcho of the octarian faction. but as far as we know, there's no nobility at all. it's just nice to dig into the historical context and meaning of terms used in the game-- it adds a lot more flavor to those things.

Ink!Sans Cultural Character Coding
Tumblr media
art by @/sakuramochi64 on twitter
Disclaimer!
This post is meant to present and analyse obvious and obscure East Asian (Jpn-Chi) ethnic and cultural influences on Ink!Sans character. If any of the material in this essay is incorrect and/or considered morally offensive, please contact me!
Ink!Sans by @comyet
↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓
/Despite the fact that Ink is a non-human monster skeleton character, he is often portrayed with human-like traits and characteristics that range between a bunch of topics. One of them that's portrayed as very predominat to his character is his etchnic cultural background/inspiration. Again, this post is meant to analyse and to discuss such inspirations and how it affects his character./
.
.
.
INSPIRATIONS
According to Ink's creator, Comyet, the concept of Ink!Sans was conceived by a Japanese and Chinese ink calligraphy brush. These are known as Fude brushes (筆) and Xuan brushes (宣笔 Xuān bǐ) respectively. This ultimately inspired his ink abilities and powers, just like his concept of being an 'artist' (In simple words, it inspired Ink as a whole).
'The history of ink brushes and the ink material is a long and complicated journey to cover, but it's important to know that these were invented in ancient China around 300 B.C (traditional Chinese: 毛筆; simplified Chinese: 毛笔; pinyin: máo bǐ) and are used in a vast variety of East and Southeast Asian countries, like Korea; Vietnam and Japan.
Tumblr media
example of the brush Ink!Sans was inspired by.
At glance, ink (the material) is an enduring medium that still surrounds society till this day and it's used in multiple cultures across the world.
Writing with ink calligraphy brushes are common in the Europe and the Middle East as well, but the material was crafted of iron salt and oak galls. When written, ink is often a dark color but fades to brown tones of rust'. Such phenomenon was detectable in the Middle Eastern Bible manuscripts and even ancient European literature as an example.
Ink!Sans was based of the ink material created in East Asia, most commonly made with carbon-base black substance, which preserverd the dark coloration even after hundred of years.
Tumblr media
↑ Example of an ancient Japanese painting, such arts are called 'Sumi-e' (Japanese, 墨絵) or ' Shuimohua' (traditional Chinese,水墨畫).
Unlike iron gall ink, carbon based inks are still very common to this day.
'Throughout the long history of East Asia, writing with ink was a very important ability to have. The Materials were made with precision, long traditions of training in calligraphic skills were developed, and writing and literacy were often wrapped up in questions of social status and class.
Although the development of major Chinese calligraphic scripts was completed by the fourth century, the art of calligraphy continued to evolve over the millennia. Master calligraphers with years of training and dedicated practice were recognized for their personal styles, and later generations of artists often adapted brushstrokes and designs to their own style. This stylistic evolution of scripts continues to enliven Chinese calligraphy to the present day.
Calligraphy was an important mark of personal learning and aesthetic sensibility in Japan. Portable, lacquered wood boxes were designed to hold an inkstone and water dropper in the base, with trays to hold writing brushes and solid ink sticks. Inkstone boxes (硯箱,suzuribako 'ink stone box' ) could be easily carried to a pleasant location, even outdoors in fine weather, to write correspondence, diary entries, or poetry.'
Fun fact: Ink's font 'Note This' is inspired by such ancient writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Example of Ink's canon speaking font and Japanese calligraphy (書道, calligraphy)
'However, when it comes to the subject of painting with the material, different schools of painting existed in China, the scholar-painters of Song-dynasty China generally preferred ink-based paintings over the more colorful, pigment-filled paintings produced historically and at the painting academy. Chinese painting manuals and commentaries from the Song (Sung) and Yuan dynasties (rarely mention pigments, possibly because it was assumed a painter’s skill shouldn’t depend on the use of colors.
Japanese artists are known for using media appropriate for the subject matter. Images depicting traditional Japanese narrative tales were typically rendered in opaque colors with outlines created in ink and later obscured by color overlay. Ink monochrome was closely associated with Chinese styles, particularly those transported to Japan via Zen Buddhism. Ink-based forms created with modulated strokes and layered washes suggested introspection and spiritual exploration.'

DESIGN
Also clarified in an ask on her main blog, Comyet describes that traditional Japanese clothing inspired Ink's 2020 outift redesing, such inspirations are very obvious in first and second analysis.
Tumblr media
Ink!sans reference sheets for the 2020 design, which can be found in Ink's official F.A.Q
Starting off, the pants.
Ink's pants were inspired by Hakama pants (袴), a traditional Japanese garment designed as a skirt-like pants often worn over any type of kimono. His pants seems to be inspired by umanori (馬乗り)Hakamas, whose had a division in the middle and often used in horse-riding activities.
Tumblr media
Example of a Hakama.
The Hakama is a wide pleated pants (seven pleats, five in front and two behind), with a rigid backrest (腰 板,koshi ita) placed at the level of the lumbar region. It is tightened with four straps, on the left and on the right, as well in front as behind.
Historically, the origins of the Hakama dates back to the Sui and Tan dynasty were this garment was worn by the Chinese imperial court. Later, the Hakama exported itself to Japan during the Kamakura period (1185 to 1332) and became a traditional garment for the upper classes of Japanese society as well as for samurai warriors who wore it over a kimono (Hakama-shita).
During the history of Japan, the Hakama took on different styles and was mainly made for men, although in the beginning it was a unisex garment. During the Asuka and Nara era (6th to 8th century), the Hakama came in two versions. The first one was open on the front and was tied on each side of the waist with two straps. The second one was open on the left side and closed on one side only.
During the Edo period, the Hakama was worn by the nobles as a complement to the outfits of the time such as the noshi and the kariginu (狩衣; a sleeveless jacket with very pronounced shoulders). Very functional, these pants were also adopted by samurai warriors who usually wore them as Kamishimo (上下/裃). It is a combination of kimono, Hakama and kataginu. When the warrior visited the shōgun, he wore a Hakama called naga-bakama which greatly restricted his movements.
Edit:Currently, hakamas are both worn by men and women.
However, under the scarft, Ink also seems to use a jacket that features a collar that has striking similarities to a Mandarin collar (or Mao collar)
Tumblr media
Ink!sans reference sheets for the 2020 design, which can be found in Ink's official F.A.Q
Mandarin collars originated in ancient China and were worn  by Qing-era bureaucrats.
Tumblr media
Picture of a Chinese man in a traditional Mandarin collar (early 1900's)
These are short, stand-up collars and sometimes fasten in the center with a small hook. Such collars are still used today for both fashionable and practical reasons. One example of modern usaged of the clothing is seen in the U.S Amry combat uniform, that features a stand-up collar of Chinese origin.
Tumblr media

Regarding of color palette, Ink!Sans redesign uses soft but dull colors and a sinple silhouette and fabric for the outift, such design choises are similar to male kimono's dressing codes which uses dull colors (like dark blue, grey, green and occasionaly brown). Male kimonos are always more simple in design compared to female kimonos.
Tumblr media
Photo that shows the difference of kimonos used by men and women
Although not specified, Ink seems to wear brown thigh-high socks, also known as 'tights' under the outfit. Japan has a long-standing cultural tradition of wearing such piece of clothing, this trend is particularly popular among young people and is often associated with the "gyaru" subculture, which emphasizes fashion, beauty, and individuality. Additionally, thigh-high socks are often worn with school uniforms, and are considered a symbol of youth and innocence. Additionally, it is also considered fashionable and trendy in Japan, and you can see many young people wearing them.
In regards of physical appearance, Ink also seems to follow ancient Japanese and Chinese beauty standarts, specially one's targeted towards women.
In ancient japan, specially towards the Nara (奈良時代, Nara jidai), Heian (平安時代, Heian jidai) and Edo period (江戸時代, Edo jidai) the beauty standarts for Japanese women were of those with slim eyebrowns, flat oval face shape and narrowed eyes.
Such attributes can be observed on Ink!Sans apperance.

/Keep in mind that some of such standarts presented are now out of fashion due to the westernization of asian countries. Specially regarding eye shape/

MUSICAL THEMES
Ink!Sans has a long history of being associated with East Asian music, specially those of Japanese origin.
Themes that comyet associated with him includes, 'Code Wu- Asia River Album 江水/Asia River' ( post can be found here), 'Dullahan under the willows' and 'Futatsuiwa from Sado (二ツ岩で佐渡) both from the japanese game 'Touhou'. (post can also be found here.
He's also associated with East Asian musical instruments, something quite noticeable in Ink!Sans theme for the the web-series 'Underverse'. Such theme is called 'Brushwork'.
The theme starts with an instrument similar to a Shamisen (Japanese-三味線) and a Guzhen (Chinese-古筝) and also uses a traditional flute.

TRIVIA
On Underverse's opening for season 2, Ink!Sans can be seem between a field of Sakura trees or Cherry Blossoms (桜).
Cherry blossom trees are an icon of Japan. Some people even call the cherry blossom Japan’s informal national flower. The Japanese school year starts in April, during cherry blossom season. The flowers symbolize good luck, love, and springtime. Since they bloom for such a short time, cherry blossom trees also represent human mortality. They remind us how short and precious life is.
In the same series, Ink is also drawn in a Sumi-e inspired style for the 'Soulless Heart Instrumental' video. Such artwork features Japanese writing in black ink.
Ink's canon instrument is the flute. Although invented in ancient germany, the flute is highly associated with East Asian cultures and it's music, chinese and japanese culture are the main ones . Other than that, Comyet already made a connection to Ink's asian influence and the instrument itself.
According to research made by the University Microfilms International (UMI) affirms that the moderny performance and melody of the instruments has clear East Asian roots, mainly from Chinese and Japanese style of music.
'The flute is a particularly appropriate instrument for such a study because of its versatility of pitch and timbre, the latter being one of the most important elements in Eastern music; it is capable of 'pitch-bending' and infinite changes in tone quality which are impossible to achieve on instruments of set pitch.
The flute music selected for stud/ shows varying degrees of Eastern influence. Depending on the nature of the composition, the Eastern elements may be extremely subtle and difficult for the untrained to decipher; in other instances the composer makes clear those sounds or concepts with Eastern roots, either through accompanying explanation or within the context of the music.'

Why Does Megan Thee Stallion LOVE Japan? An Astrological Analysis ❤️
Tumblr media
I've seen two or three posts like this or more and it makes perfect sense because through Astrocartography, we can see that she's got her Jupiter line (while its at home in Sag btw) going STRAIGHT through the country itself sitting on top of her Ascendant. So, not only does she feel SUPER lucky but her energy feels EXPANSIVE and UNTHREATENED. Like, she actually feels SEEN AND APPRECIATED and she has 0 need to prove herself, fight for her life, or be anything she's not. She can focus on feeling the vibes and being happy and abundant. Jupiter can also be associated with 'foreign' things so it being in her first in her relocated chart for Japan (I used Tokyo bc JPN has one time zone) makes sense. It's taking a special interest in what's outside of your comfort zone.
Tumblr media
Because she has a natal Jupiter-Saturn square between her 8H speaking to her 11H, it means that she's used to compromising her boundaries for other people's sake who want to benefit her. Like, her abundance seems to always come at the expense of others being in their feelings or that she has to sacrifice (Pisces) parts of herself around others. Like, she's always felt restricted in some way by her environment. Surrounded by people who never wanted to see her win because they felt threatened or intimidated by it. There's usually someone around her playing a victim. Her history's echoed this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Hollywood, her relocated chart elevates her in the public eye at a cost. With an Aries Rising, it puts her chart ruler under duress in her 5H across from her 11H--Meaning that she's popular but her artistry (5H) is weirdly hated and seen as polarizing. That Sun-Mars Opposition also feels rather violent tbh and we've ALSO seen her history with that. A Sun-Moon and Sun-Mars opposition between Leo and Aquarius with her 10th and 11th in Saturn ruled signs answering to a 12H Saturn reads to me like male figures/patriarchs or industry 'old heads' having an issue with her sexuality being so vibrant and liberating (5H) that they actively suppress and punish her (Saturn joys in the 12th in trad astro and equals isolation and Saturn can equal male figures in power). But even with Chiron in Virgo in her 6H trining her elevated 10H planets, including her Venus, it creates a story of constantly feeling burdened to prove herself to the point where she's taught that numbers and figures determine her self worth, making her ultimately doubt herself. That's exhausting!
But in Tokyo and Japan overall, that Chiron is placed ON her MC at 29 degrees (a fame degree in degree astro) and safely trines those Cap planets that have shifted to her 2H. This means that she literally not only makes money there for simply EXISTING exponentially but she feels more natural in her resourcefulness and sense of self value and worth here with the emphasis placed on the 2H opposed to feeling 'over exposed' by it being in the 10H in the other chart because it means that SHE determines how she's moving opposed to feeling the pressures of it being the other way around. Ultimately, the 2nd, 6th, and 10th are all houses we look to as money potential centers but an emphasis with planets in any of those houses is going to paint a different picture. 2H emphasis will feel more independent and the pressure will come from within, 6H will feel more like a cog in a wheel in trying to find its place but will be very successful at it but potentially overworked/overlooked, and 10H emphasis puts someone on the fast track to success but can become overburdened with always needing to prove or outdo its previous successes.
As someone who has so much Saturn in her (Aqua and Cap), she's used to working everything out on her own so the best thing for her, imo, is for her to be in an environment where people just leave her THE FUCK ALONE and let her do what she wants to do and how she wants to do it. The Sun and the Moon here are in the opposite houses of the houses they find joy in in trad astro (sun likes being in the 9th and moon likes being in the 3rd). From being someone (me) who has their moon in the 9th in whole sign, I can say from experience that it creates a pure joy and love in the unknown and in foreign places. It means you have an insatiable desire to educate yourself about your surroundings and you feel the safest around people who are very different from you bc you feel/experience that they judge you significantly less. Bc she has a natal 4H Moon opposing her Sun in the 10th, that sense of safety is vital and it means she's actually always struggled with that. With having a burning need TO put herself in the public eye and be very visible but weirdly feel attacked and unsafe the longer she's in view. It exacerbates deeper issues, imo, around fearing being vulnerable and may make a person create an outward persona as an armor they can wear to protect themselves.
So when her Moon is in a place that's opposite where it normally feels comfortable but she's USED to feeling uncomfortable, it kind of creates a sense of balance where she finds peace and freedom in what's foreign to her bc she's used to what's familiar hurting her. Then with the Sun being opposite of its joy, she's able to explore her inner child (Leo's ruled by the Sun and = children/joy), and find places that connect her to her early childhood interests (3H = early childhood education/experiences). And for her, that was always anime, among other things. So in this country, honestly, she feels the safest, on every fathomable level, esp on an inner child level, that she's ever been.
She might deadass get an apartment or property in Japan. And she SHOULD. They'll love her and she'll return it 10x over ❤️
For those curious, I offer Astrocartography readings here in my Expanded Services section.

The Ice casting decision reeks of misogyny. It's doubly disappointing as a Japanese ice show considering just how good/deep their women's field is. Kaori not only being reigning world champion, but having made history with it just so recently, rubs salt even further into the wound. Makes me wonder if they're falling into the same thing I keep seeing posted on various platforms of the women's field being "not interesting" anymore - various arguments around this statement.
No matter the reasoning, it's extremely disappointing. Especially with just how they openly stated it to, though I guess it doesn't leave anyone wondering just how intentional it was to have them all left out.
Thank you for your thoughts! This probably serves as an answer for my poll. I am still using this to comment on some of your thoughts under the cut and share some additional points from my view.
The decision of an all male cast is strange and uncalled for especially considering their deep field of women. I really wonder what lead to that final decision. I totally get the disappointment and anger even if I like most skaters that are announced for the show. But tbh from my point of view Japan has a lot of mysoginistics way of thinking instilled in their culture, so internalized mysoginy may have played a part, even if probably or hopefully nobody went like "we hate women, so we don't want them". From the reaction by Japanese fans I came across the criticism wasn't as negative as the reaction from the English fandom. In the end the Japanese fans buy the tickets.
We can't tell if the producers buy into the "women skating is not interesting anymore" or if they have other reasons. There is not any justifiable reasons to exclude women single skaters imo! One thought appeared on my mind though: from my outside observation the Japanese single women skaters do not have the same "superstar" status as the male skaters in Japan and maybe that plays a part why they are deemed by producers as "not a selling point"???After Mao Asada no other female Japanese skater got as much attention. It's a shame especially as Kaori has three world titles now! She deserves so much better. All of the Japanese ladies deserve better in general! (Though the women discipline is popular with tv ratings in Japan yet I don't see the same hype around the women skaters as male skaters in the fandom and fans will attend shows not casual tv watchers. Again just an outsiders observation of the Japanese fandom, so by no means any sort of factbased.)
I also think it's maybe in Japan but to me it doesn't feel like a Japanese ice show, bc besides Kao and Shoma and Satoko if you can even count her as she isn't perfoming apparently (that's the wildest point imo to have Satoko and not have her skate 💀) there are not many Japanese skaters announced and I mean the men field in Japan is deep too. So when all male, where are they? Where is Sota, Yuma, Kazuki, Koshiro??? I mean Nika Egadze a stronger selling point than any of them? 🙃
Many things are worth criticizing but the transparancy of the "concept" is not a negative point for me. Transparancy is always good, even if it's not transparent about the reasons for an all male cast. It's better to sell tickets when ppl know what to expect than to let ppl buy tickets blindly expecting certain skaters that then would not fit their concept. They did try to sell tickets last year before anyone was announced and that seemed to have sparked criticism inside Japan, maybe a reason why there is a complete annoucement about their casting decisions, even if it wasn't a decision anyone asked for.
Maybe this decision for an all male cast is also just a promotion stunt. Whether we like it or not, it was a "hot topic" today in the fandom and trended on Jpn Twt.
Whatever lead to that decision I feel like one thing is clear looking at SOI (a show that has the same producer) that new concepts for ice shows are needed. As much as I hate the "empty seats" discussion, shows don't sell as strongly as they used to, not even in Japan (unless it's Yuzu's show but then it's also focused on a male skater and on one skater only). They need new concepts and I am not against having a new concept, but the big question is whether that new concept had to EXCLUDE women single skaters performing???? Absolutely not.
Only time will tell if their "concept" will get ppl interested to buy tickets or turned off. We'll find out in July. And frankly in the end our view doesn't matter much as the majority of us won't be the target audience for this show.

this is not a take technically this is an advertisement for my favorite fe pairing but hello i think everyone should consider lon’qu/tharja. they’re very sweet. their chain is one of lon’qu’s few backstory/lore-involved supports and unlike the other one that gets heavy into it (cherche, also a good chain but we’re not talking abt that right now) where she already knows his history, he willingly tells tharja what’s haunting him and she’s sympathetic to his struggles and kind in tone as she responds to him. she wants to help him and works on devising a memory wipe for him. when he decides to not erase his memories of ke’ri because he doesn’t want to forget her even if his trauma is related to his memories of her she accepts it (although in en she does grumble a bit about it bc it was a lot of effort to prepare what she needed, in jpn the tone is a lot softer and she accepts right away and doesn’t press it.)
their s support is also very sweet. tharja is the one who proposes to lon’qu, saying she wants to be there for him and support him as he works through his traumas. robin does come up, as they do in almost all of her supports bar donnel & kellam :(, but she brings them up solely so she can bait him into giving her an answer because he’s like What at first and it’s funny to me. she’s like tch… whatever…. if you don’t respond i don’t care… i’ll dedicate the rest of my life to MU…. 🙄 and then lon’qu responds. LOL. and his jpn dialogue for this reply includes, and i quote: “I...want to be near you. You understand about me and women... I want to touch you...and I want to respond to that. I'll show you that I can overcome this flaw...” (TL: Miscellany on SerenesForest’s Awakening TL thread). like that’s such good dialogue. and his EN dialogue is also really good i just like that JPN bit. the EN is: “However, there is a strength and grace about you that I find appealing. You are the first to look so deep into my heart and accept what you saw there. With you at my side, I might finally free myself of this painful past.” still very good.
they just want to be with and support each other. he’s afraid he’ll put her in danger by them being together and she’s swift to say she can take care of herself. and then says (this one’s jpn dialogue again bc i love comparing en/jp dialogue it’s fascinating to see the differences) that she wants to get closer to him and asks him to promise that he’ll work to overcome his fears with her. and then he gives her a ring as proof of his dedication to her, showcasing he wanted to propose to Her and that she just beat him to it.
it’s sweet. they’re sweet. lon’qu’s future past conversation with noire mentions that being with tharja does in fact help him out a lot. they’re a pairing and a family that work together sosososo well. please consider them (i have pictures of their dialogues but i cannot attach them bc i’m anonymous so just take my descriptions of everything and handful of quotes sorry). lontharja the world 4ever
im convinced 👀

I recently found out that “weekend Susie” is a mistranslation and it’s actually called “susie on vacation” in jpn. I’m pretty sure she’s supposed to be Susie in the future like Manager Magolor..any ideas on why shes missing her hairclip and the “Secretary” title she always has in jpn? Susie is so hard to figure out..like how she only smiles three times in the entirety of robobot (once when she takes the program controller and twice when singing the noble haltmann but ONLY when saying the words father in jpn) so I’m curious on what your thoughts are on her (and unfortunately has the worst localization ever…i had to look at the robobot translations from @/kaialone on tumblr) sorry for rambling but shes so interesting to me and it’s a bit sad seeing how a lot of the details she has in characterization never get talked about
Anon...Did you somehow know I've been replaying Robobot in Japanese?! And it's basically strengthened my confirmation that some people - though less than before - are a bit too harsh and/or restrictive in their takes on both Susie and her father.
That said, I do I try to give people room to "safely hate" these fictional characters as, for a lot of people, it may be one of their only ways of processing a gross problem that affects the real world/so much of history that they can't do much about.
But I love the silly/tragic Haltmann family. I'm sympathetic and even semi-defensive towards 'em. Which is why I'm happy to answer any good faith Haltmann asks.
Ahem! Also, before I get into it, I wanted to say that technically "Weekend Susie" vs "Susie on Vacation" is not a mistranslation per se.
What it IS is a localization.
休日 can mean "vacation," yes. When you break down the kanji, literally it is made up of the words "rest day." So it can also be just about any day when you're not working/not at school/not busy.
For most of western civilization (not me because I'm a contractor XD ) the weekends are people's "rest days." To read 休日 as "weekend" might not even be that much of a stretch/localization!
Probably explains the lack of "secretary" title. She's literally not on the clock! As for the hairclip, who can say...? Similar reasons? I know in Susie's case, it's sentimental, though hairpins in Japan often have this association with studiousness/"time to get serious" so removing it is an easy indicator "She's allowing herself time to be silly!"
I do like to imagine that this is a post-canon Susie though. That girl deserves something nice after her trauma...
Anyway, reminder that post-FL, the localizers have been working more closely with the Japanese team to create a more accurate translation for us. I know the wounds from PR's rough translation (and SA's fast-and-loose in weird places one) still hurt, oof, but the Kirby series is getting better about its translations!!
Actually... you know... there's not THAT many cutscenes...
Maybe I will make my own "If they'd hired Dess to translate Planet Robobot" translation of the game? I've already threatened several times to do a full translation of "The Noble Haltmann" with all references/metaphors intact...
But yes! Speaking of how Susie uses her emotions, I was so moved by something in her first meeting with Kirby, I actually wrote about it! And I'm going to share it here, because you might find it interesting~
-
So, I had my eyes peeled for any interesting bits of characterization left behind on the cutting room floor. Immediately, I was amused by how politely Susie talks to Kirby in the beginning. She doesn't really "talk down to him" or insult his intelligence in the slightest. (One could argue that it's a false business politeness, of course. Although she only breaks that in like, the second to last cutscene) Any dismissal of him feels very "company-mandated." (And the company is run by a murderous computer but leaving that aside...)
She gently praises how beautiful the water and the air on this planet is and that's when something... starts to change in her...
Susie gets impossibly sad. And her attitude changes COMPLETELY.
I stopped for a second reading this. "Hold on. What? Why does she lose her cool HERE? Is this some indication that the place she and her dad used to live on was a really poor planet without clean air and drinking water?" And heck, maybe that is the case!
But something else struck me about her line:
"...You don't even know the value of what you have..."
It's not the snooty we-know-better-than-you "misappropriation of resources" that is triggering her. It is having something precious right next to you and you don't even recognize it.
It's about her dad. Right from the beginning.
She can't NOT talk about it. It affects all her actions. Maybe another reason while I feel like it's better to judge Susie on a whole than any one individual action she takes, because (like Magolor, oops oops oops) she is masking her intentions alllll the time.
Also, omg, I know some people are still sensitive about the Mechaknight thing but that is PEAK grim humor in Japanese! It is treated way too cold and business-like in English, imo.
In Japanese, she starts to describe him exactly like she's telling her bestie that she just met the man of her dreams and then the WHAM line: "So, I gave him a full-body modification!"
Yes, it's unhinged. But it's also wonderful. (She's so Eggman-core.)

now that i've seen more info on the stuff with bosch thanks to the jpn side of the fandom on twitter, i place a new theory on the table
the guy that's apparently bosch in the final main story cutscene? short red hair and missing the purple scars completely somehow. the cardboard combatant in the post-game tournaments you can do, however, still has the long black hair he had and also obviously the scars. big differences.
bosch was experimented on by shadaloo remnants. you know what shadaloo has a history of? making clones.
either short haired bosch is the clone, or the cardboard combatant is the clone. and no one's realized it, not even themselves.

Omg they blocked me 😢😢😢😢
Im so hurt 😢😢😢😢
Now how will they learn that japan is not the criticism-free weaboo paradise they expect it to be 😢😢😢😢
And that its a real country with real problems 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Yeah anyways guys remember that just because twst is a game it does not mean that it exists in a vacuum and that the relationships and hierarchies we see in there are also reflective of jpn and jpn's perceptions of other cultures— And be ESPECIALLY critical of characters like Ortho since Yana Toboso has a history of sexualizing her underage characters ex. Kuroshitsuji and Ciel

Lilia Fact Sheet
Tumblr media
(Voted 8th-most-popular-character (tied with Jamil) on the jpn server in a combination of seven different character-ranking surveys held throughout 2021)
Tumblr media
Art by Toboso Yana: "Diasomnia Dorm goes to see a movie after school." Lilia: "It's great that students get to see movies at a discount!" - Malleus: "Is it really all right for you and I to be paying the student price?" Silver: "Malleus-sama, Father, do you prefer salted popcorn or caramel popcorn?" Sebek: "Why do you get the seat next to Malleus-sama!! Swap with me immediately, Silver!!!"
Lilia does not actually remember his own birthdate, putting down January 1st when he applied to enroll at Night Raven College, but the date does not seem to have any particular significance to him.
Lilia looks like a young boy but speaks in a somewhat old-fashioned way, using the pronoun “washi”. His actual age is unknown and he refuses to reveal it, even to his own adopted son, Silver.
In history class Malleus says he sees a picture of Lilia in their Magical History textbooks, Lilia has said himself that he has “witnessed the past 500 years of history firsthand”, and remembers most of it. In conversation he will reference ancient historical events as if they were incidents he saw for himself only recently.
Tumblr media
It is probably safe to assume that he is several years older than Malleus, as he references having met him when “he (Malleus) still had eggshell on his head”, and how child-Malleus used to cry when he couldn’t figure out how to dress himself.
Lilia appears in several vignettes for other characters, and seems both sociable and to enjoy lending a hand in his own way.
Like Malleus he does not require a broom to levitate, and will often insert himself into conversations by suddenly appearing upside down in front of people. He boasts that he has healthy skin and top grades despite his habit of staying up all night playing video games.
Tumblr media
Lilia is, infamously, a terrible cook. Malleus has said he never wants to eat anything Lilia cooks ever again in life, and Silver’s disliked food consists only of anything made by Lilia. Silver tells us that Lilia refuses to follow the order in which recipes are written, ignores the recommended quantity of ingredients and introduces entirely new ingredients that were never a part of the original recipe.
We learn that the reason for this is that Lilia only formed an interest in cooking once he had a family to look after. He was determined to focus upon nutritional meals for them, and when a recipe did not have enough healthy ingredients for his liking, he would introduce new ingredients so as to increase the meal’s nutritiousness. As a result, he now ignores the instructions of recipes that do not sound healthy enough.
Tumblr media
According to Sebek, Lilia either does not care about unpleasant tasting food or does not notice it, as he can consume foul-tasting potions with enjoyment and once ate an entire pot-au-feu dish that a young Silver had attempted to cook and accidentally burnt, without complaint.
Lilia’s poor cooking ability seems to be gaining notoriety throughout the school because of how he enjoys attempting to share his home cooked meals with others, and how he passes on his unfortunate cooking tips and tricks to his fellow students. In one of Jamil’s vignettes, Jamil firmly refuses Lilia’s offer of assistance with readying a meal for Kalim, reflecting on a rumor he heard that Lilia is not to be trusted with food preparation.
Lilia receives a book of recipes from Trey on his birthday and comments that “the ingredients listed here will never be enough—I will work something out”. We learn that he participates in the school’s “Master Chef” curriculum every year, and always fails the course.
Tumblr media
While we know from Book 5 that Lilia is wholly capable of singing normally when he chooses to, he does not always do so. His personal preference is for heavy music and screaming, and he will shout even when singing lullabies.
During a recruitment event for the Pop Music Club, Lilia attempted to stage dive into a crowd of gathered first years, and fell to the floor when no one caught him. The recruitment event resulted in a single new member for the club: Kalim.
Lilia enjoys music because it brings people together, regardless of age or place of birth.
Tumblr media
Lilia seems to be acting as a chaperone for Malleus at the school, always watching over his interactions with other students with pleasure.
Rook calls him “Monsieur Curiosité”, while Floyd refers to him as Mendako-chan (eng: flapjack octopus)
He enjoys black licorice immensely, and his dislike of marshmallows seems to come from the fact that he simply finds them unsatisfying.
Lilia does not enjoy being in the sun, preferring cloudy weather, and wears a sun visor during his PE classes. He is often joined during battles and his flying lessons by clouds of bats, while a single bat will often fly down from the rafters of the lecture hall to visit with him during magical history lessons, his favorite subject.
Tumblr media
Lilia wears an oversized lab coat during alchemy lessons intentionally, in order to promote his “cute” appeal, of which he is very much aware and seems to be going out of his way to emphasize. He says that, while the sleeves get in his way, he puts up with it because of how cute they make him look. His school uniform jacket is also overly large, and is the same size as the one worn by Malleus.
In vignettes we have learned that Lilia is a former king’s guard for the Lord of Briar Valley, was highly trusted by the Queen at the time and earned medals of bravery for his courage in battle. Though he has since retired from the front lines, he is still a very formidable opponent both physically and magically, defeating multiple third-year students who had been bullying Epel in his lab wear vignette and holding his own against Malleus in Beansfest (until the latter ran out of beans, resulting in Lilia’s victory).
Tumblr media
Contrary to his violent past, Lilia’s wish in the Wish Upon a Star event is for peace between the different races of Twisted Wonderland, and we learn that he has taught Silver that war should never be an option.
Lilia became interested in traveling alone only recently, after things became “peaceful”, and he is extremely well-traveled. He enjoys solo-trips to foreign countries and often brings back souvenirs for both himself and others. Lilia as said that he particularly enjoys interacting with people from other countries.
Tumblr media
He was initially a very strict educator while raising Silver and Sebek, but after seeing them struggle with their training, he realized that it was wrong to raise children in the same way he had treated his subordinates on the front lines. He has been raising them in a laissez-faire manner ever since. (Sebek has parents and siblings of his own, but it seems that Lilia has been overseeing Sebek’s tutelage alongside Silver from when they were both very young.)
Silver has shared that he is in extremely good physical shape, often doing situps while hanging upside down from the canopy of his bed. This scene has been animated by a fan at the link below.
Lilia’s hair is naturally black. He dyes the under part different colors depending on his mood.
At NRC Lilia enjoys online games and magi-cam, the twst-equivalent of instagram. He is an accomplished gamer, and has expressed that he enjoys multi-player games as people from all over the world are able to gather to enjoy themselves together without the boundaries of physical borders.
Lilia seems to be familiar with Sam’s family, saying that he was acquainted with Sam’s great-great-great-grandfather.

Voice Lilia is voiced by Midorikawa Hikaru (緑川 光), one of the most accomplished voice actors of his generation. His performance as Heero Yuy in New Mobile Suit Gundam W was what inspired Silver’s seiyuu to pursue voice acting. He has also had leading roles in SLAM DUNK, Fushigi Yugi, GTO, DIABOLIK LOVERS, Persona 3, Fate/Zero, Granblue Fantasy and more, having been active in the voice acting industry since 1988.

2023 GPF Thoughts - Sr Men
ilia malinin (usa) made history. first 4a in a short program. highest tech ever in a short program. first person to land all six quads in a competition. however. he NEEDS to work on his components. he needs better choreo. he needs more engagement with the music. he needs to work on the ease and flow of his edges and extensions. his component scores should not have been what they were. i will say that they're markedly better than last year. but they are nowhere near his top competitors (shoma, yuma, kevin on his best days). and if he wants to truly be a force in men's figure skating, they need to be. 1 SP / 1 FS / 1
shoma uno (jpn) is honestly that bitch. his EASE. his EDGES. the HEIGHT he manages on his jumps. the way he threw in a 3a+eu+3f at the end of his free skate after popping the second 3a. absolute insanity. his components are off the charts. he deserves 10s. the musicality, the nuances, the outstanding choreo in both programs... give shoma the 10. he deserves it. (tbqh. he deserves to win. shoma is what figure skating is supposed to be - the combination of technical ability and performance. not just one.) 2 SP / 2 FS / 2
yuma kagiyama (jpn) has gotten So Much Better in just one season. carolina has worked absolute WONDERS with his presentation and skating skills, and while he does still have a couple areas to improve (posture and facial engagement are the two i noted on first watch) he's shaping up to be absolutely incredible. gorgeous air positions, great choreo, deep flowing edges. i didn't 100% love his short but his free skate was beautiful. 3 SP / 4 FS / 3
adam siao him fa (fra) is on the rise, and i'm so excited for him to keep growing. the tech is there, and his grit to fight for those quad landings is so good. he needs work on the flow and expression that others like kevin and shoma have, because he's not there yet, but i can see glimpses of it. can't wait to see how he does at euros. can we get a repeat???? 6 SP / 3 FS / 4
kao miura (jpn) is my son. that's my son. my beloved chaos nerd. his attack on titan free skate is so nerdy and so him it hurts. and the way he threw in the 4t+3t after fumbling the first combo attempt at the end of his short... an icon. hope he recovers from his illness quickly, i love watching him skate and want him to be at his best for jpn nationals, 4c, and hopefully worlds. he fought SO HARD through his free skate, he gets all my respect. 4 SP / 5 FS / 5
kevin aymoz (fra) is one of my favorite male skaters of all time. the only worthy successor to javier fernandez's program component scores. so sad he didn't have good skates, his programs are absolutely jaw dropping when done well. his expression and musicality are unmatched. i hope he and silvia have a chat and that he does better at euros. 5 SP / 6 FS / 6
